Redefining Honor to Fight Honor Killings | Khalida Brohi | TEDxBoulder

- For centuries women have been killed in the name of honor, a custom that Khalida Brohi refers to as "ego killings," a way of preserving mens' egos by controlling the women around them. In her powerful talk, Brohi examines the relation of honor to tradition and religion and shares about her experience of fighting this crime by claiming honor for herself and redefining it to empower women. Brohi believes that honor, which has been misused in tribal areas of Pakistan, is actually essential to a growing and healthy society. By redefining and reclaiming honor, we can find ways to fight the crimes that use it. Brohi was the first girl in her village, located in the province of Balochistan, to go to school. She attended school in Karachi. In 2004, when Brohi was 16, a close friend became a victim of an honor killing. Her friend was killed because she wanted to marry a person she loved instead of someone her family chose. Brohi began to protest honor killings while she was in Karachi, but this only angered people and caused the tribal leaders to oppose her. She fled Karachi in 2008.
Brohi recalls that in response, her father told her, "don't cry, strategize." Instead of openly protesting, she created the Sughar Empowerment Society, which is a non-profit organization which helps women in Pakistan learn skills related to "economic and personal growth." Sughar means "skilled, confident woman" in Urdu. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
"Ego Killings", that sums it up well. This overbearing need to control women must stop
Nothing to do with ego.
@@meowisla2032 everything to do with ego. Only reason men want inexperienced virgins is because they don't want them to expect more and they want to control them. Educated and experienced women expect better and this is damaging to the egos of fragile men
@@mushy470 You don't know what you are talking about. You project your own understanding onto a culture/faith you haven't the faintest idea about. Zina and promiscuity is considered an abominable sin as well as other forms of immorality. The men choose to be chaste because of their devotion to God and they want the same for their wife.
@@mushy470 Who exactly are you, Muskaan, to talk about people with ego. Do you not understand that the people you insult literally put their foreheads on the ground at a BARE MINIMUM of 34 times a day, fight against their egos and desires, fight against their own selves in order to surrender to their Creator? And that they believe arrogance/egotism is a Shaytaanic (Devilish) trait. So who are YOU to claim they are egotistical when they LIVE HUMBLY? Do you not understand that infidelity, adultery is a huge crime in their faith that is punishable by stoning to death and being flogged 100 times/then banished, respectively and the punishment is even worse in the Hereafter? Do you not understand that men are responsible for women in their way of life and that if they fail their duty there are serious consequences for both parties?
@@meowisla2032 then *WHO* are you to Impose such things on others??? You can believe such things because it's your right but to impose it on someone else is wrong, abusive and Illegal! When a women or a man wants to choose there own decisions you can just give advices but can't impose or control the person! If he or she is muslim, than God can just judge him or her not you!
I really admire her father. He protected his daughter the same way my dad protected my sisters from child marriage. A lot of men were interested to marry my older sister since she was 10 years old. My mom and dad rejected all of them even if there were pressure from their relatives.
I cried when she said the part about her dad and the grades.😥💜
@@Adronitis : A very beautiful story about a touching & important moment.
I don't think the father was all that admirable. He instead put pressure on her to get good grades. Can not imagine that kind of pressure to be put on a child - as if she would be killed or bring such dishonor to the family if her grades were not good enough. I will never understand your culture, and I do not mean any disrespect. It just seems so horrific to girls and women to me :'(
@@yepitsme3336 I 110% agree
@@yepitsme3336 In their situation the dad only had two choices, either to marry off as child bride (which is normal thing to do expected y society) or to send for better education which was more difficult. Since he chose to educate her, it does put more pressure on the child to do well because he has kind of going against the society to educate his daughter
What a brave, wonderful woman.
Thanks to her father
One impossibly brave lady...thx for doing so much for so many....
Life: Unbridled good fathers raise excellent future generations
NOTHING and NOBODY should EVER stop each of us from being ourselves!! I’ve always had the right to be myself! Always!!
Incredible woman!! Inspiring & insightful on a whole other level.
I'm proud of your bravery sister. I never heard about honour killing all my life until I watched interviews on honour killings in UA-cam recently. I pray for your safety and please continue your Jihad to fight injustice in honour killing. We need women like you to strengthen the true teachings of Islam as in Quran and authentic Hadith. May Allah grant you all the strength and safety. Ameen
Lords and lords of love to her dad! He's a hero who stood up for what's correct, in a brutal society where gentleman are condemned when they treated ladies nicely.
OMG ,so beautifully she defined our culture. Redefining honors is amazing. I'm also Brahvi and what she said we have faced that. What was new that she actually took action and doing a extremely great job by converting the negative into positive. By minimizing the negative norms and promote the positive one. I'm heartily impressed by her actions, I wish I can join her❤.
Did you try to join her? How did it go?
Cultural acceptance never means accepting the unacceptable. That’s true.
Your definition of true honor is beautiful. Bravo to your father for having the love, wisdom, and integrity to buck social norms/bullying and following what his heart knew to be true. Bless you for passing these lessons on, and empowering others.
What an amazing talk. Thank you for sharing this story Khalida.
Great Sister, I have no words to say for your praise.....
What a strong and beautiful person she is. Behind every successful woman is a father who supported her. My father was the same way with his three daughters. May Allah bless his soul. Amen
Totally convinced with the story stated by Ma'am as I belong to Balochistan and seeing such situation axes the radius of the person. Honor and Respect are the two examplary source for a sprinting tribal system. No opposition to it as both sources are the initiator for a basic human being. From my perspective sparking a change in the fully diversed and corked minds will definatly led to a brightened up generation. Holding a stance for our upcoming future generation would be astonishing.
Do you want to see people with no honor?

Amazing story - redefining honour and recognizing how to spearhead and mobilize change
Mashahallah
I cannot possibly imagine how scary that conversation with her dad was for her. Even listening made me feel like I couldnt breathe, especially when he said something as simple as grades would "dishonor" him.... And that members of her own family were participating in honor killings.
The way she goes about educating people is amazing and I hope she's able to reach even more people in the future
Such a great and brave woman , I wish her the best 💕💕💕
Powerful and influential 👩 you are giving back to your culture and reshaping it for longer run. Thank you for making the world better!
Wow !! What a great words and courage, thank you so much for your great talk.
Proud on you my sister, you built the honor of Balochistan ❤
So proud of you Khalida. You are a true leader and inspire me to be the best I can be every day. Thank you for sharing your story and for the work that you do. Thank you for your friendship. -Cam
You have a good father, he's a lot like mine only he loves to tease me, it's his way of saying I love you.
AMEN!!! This video sums up equality in so many ways!!
Just like you can’t hide behind a title, you MUST not hide behind the reason of “I did it to preserve my honour”
May God bless you great lady!
Goddess and God bless you awesome lady!!
Amazing is all I can say this is.
What an inspirational young woman.
The thing that sucks even more, is that other women around them will hate on eachother, so instead of fighting together, many will hurt eachother just to keep their 'honour'
Do you think it comes from fear?
RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT FOR ALL YOU DO SISTER
When all you seem to hear are stories of fathers and husbands harming their daughters and wives for daring to have something of their own,you treasure stories like hers ♥️♥️.
Shows how the Western media can be manipulative, right?
My respect to all awesome dads.... Dads are the coolest 💯
Keep it up, I know this very existential issues in our Tribal and village areas compare to our urban centers. In major cities it's almost going to end soon...
Proud of kahlida .good job keep it up
Thank you for the great work you are doing with your colleagues, and the honor you bring to the world.

NOTHING and NOBODY should ever stop each of us from being ourselves!
I salute your father, Hi is a hero!
I have no idea what it’s called, but her robe is amazing. I love the detailed textile patterns. Even that, though, is not nearly as impressive as her story.
@HOTH THE WISE Thanks friend.
Simplicity is Eastern honour and heals consumerism and consequently communism.
@@muhammadumernaseervisiting964 Oh yeah, label everything that goes against what you like as communism. Thar has nothing to do with finding out the type of textile pattern.
thus is right we have such kind of environament
Bravo Sister! Thank you for speaking out about women’s rights in Islam. Honor killing is not an Honor at all.
I appreciate you.
Honorable daughter
You are brave and extremely intelligent.
Nice to know there are decent men!
Fantastic father!
I love her. Aha is my HERO.
Proud of you 👍💗💖❤️
I’m proud of you too
great speach
she's so brave
Your father is a lovely man.
No horrible, stinky, rotten person ever dares try to murder me, any of my friends, or any of my loved ones for just being different and ourselves!!!!
Nice
👏👏👏👏👏
Killing someone in order to restore your honor is not the solution, instead it is a crime.
👏👏💚
i knw many girls, who were killed on name of honor and some even commits suicides for the honor of their family. m looking forward to fight against this brutal killing in my village. but the thing is whenever i talk a bit about it, ppl find it to be a characterless. just bow ur head and keep admiring what ur elders says" is considered a honor.
proud to be a BALOCH
Bravery sister god bless you where can I find the book
Why people are interested in to marry when girls was so young. .... Their life seems focus everything marry but so many women was killed and men abused child wife. Honor killing control women by men and family. Child marry is crime. Brave lady !!! Thank you for sharing your powerful and positive energy.
Nowadays there are news where some women killed the husband with paramour,is that killing okay?
Please don't miss from 5:30!!
everyone who failed them should be ashamed of themselves
She get a Nobel
Nobels are politically motivated sadly
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍💖💖
Same in my family
😢
I know for a fact that tolerance means no killing or mistreating innocent people for just being different.
Wow our Brohi❤❤😊
She's is saying things against cultural norms۔۔is that right?
Wonderful...Y only 642 likes...in Asia this problem relate millions*millions girl's life..Go girl😍😍😍...At least she z lucky that she was free nd had freedom to go door to door,, to talk to different peoples,, to Spread awareness Still many or more are locked nd🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐
Proud to be a baloch but more proud to be a Pakistani ❤
wow
She is saying many things against pak cultural norms.. what she said some of these don't seem correct .
So as per the norm. Religion and culture distorted to have control! This woman is brave, she could of easily been killed.
Do not worship culture, traditions if it does not make one a better human being.Keep the good throw out what makes people unhappy.Who made all the rules woman has to keep? Not women. Why is perfection expected when the Father and other males are not perfect themselves?
In Islam, it is a major sin to murder or kill someone idk why this is being referred to as 'culture'
Heck no
@Amandeep Wahi
No. You've heard wrong.
There's nothing like that in Islam
Culture and religious practices are two different terms.
Sughar is written in Hindi सुघड़ means Smart, Clever!
Women are not property. I respect the father that protected his daughter even with all the pressure that he came under...
What could possibly be more DISHONOURABLE that killing your own children? or any child? or any one? How did her father "set her free?" Talk about pressure ..She HAD TO GET GOOD GRADES AT SCHOOL?! Fortunately she was obviously good at her studies. Very brave woman.
Nono, you are getting it wrong. The father said that to her as an example of hardwork. The honor of her father was the hardwork. It's just an example of hardwork, not that if she had an F, he would kill her.
U completely misunderstood her
honor is a five letter word that scores 7 points in scrabble, not a justification for murder.
This is so horrible and unbelievably still in 2020. Honor is not murder, honor is not killing your daughters. Yes, yes, yes there must be change from this barbaric act. Murder is Murder.
izzata siva hichra aff
Mashahallah
what honor is there in killing?
Redefining cultural and religious norms are only tantamount to giving excuses and defending them. Rejecting the norms is the brave way forward
