  • Lilia Tarawa was brought up in the Gloriavale Christian Community on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, where she was constantly surrounded by everyone she loved. But over time, she began to see the dark side of her community, and ultimately realised that she had to get out. In this raw and emotional talk, Lilia shares the reality of life in a cult, and her heart-wrenching journey to break free.
Lilia Tarawa is a New Zealand writer, speaker, holistic health consultant and business coach. She is a member of the Māori Ngāi Tahu tribe. Lilia was born into New Zealand's infamous religious cult, Gloriavale, and fled with her eleven family members at eighteen years of age. Her extraordinary life experience compelled her to pursue a career promoting human rights, welfare and empowerment.

No, because the thing is, prophecy is easy. You can just predict _everyone_ will be "a great leader" or whatever. For all the people who don't turn out that way, your prediction will be forgotten or they'll blame themselves for not living up to expectations or whatever, so all the times you were wrong won't come up.
But the one time you happen to be right, suddenly, BAM, you're a prophet because you "predicted the future."

    • @_dont_mind_me
      @_dont_mind_me 3 роки тому +93

Ragnar Sims I typed “definition of a cult” into google and that’s what came up, and that’s from oxford languages. I never said it was a bad thing, only that religions are cults whether they’re widespread and peaceful or small and extreme. When you look at the origin of the word, it meant things like worship which is a very important and respected aspect of religion. Nowadays a cult is typically used in reference to negative examples, and common religions try to avoid the word in order to maintain their reputation. But as a word it isn’t positive or negative, it only references devotion towards a figure or object - that’s what a religion is, just as much as a typical ‘cult’.

Also, what does your mother think of all this? Or is your father a control freak? What about your 3 brothers? The story just isn't believable. If you grew up in a society where beltings and beatings are the norm, you wouldn't become disillusioned or deeply offended by it as a child because everybody around you accepts it as normal. You wouldn't even see it as being wrong if you were born and raised in such a culture. You only get outraged by this if you are already a part of western culture and are looking in at the society from the outside, which is precisely the audience that this talk has been geared towards.

I learned at an early age not to trust the word "Christian." There are too many people, too many institutions hiding behind that word. Lilia's story is an extreme example, but there are so many people who wear the label like it gives them some kind of automatic validity, and a free pass to impose their personal choices on others. It's not a CV, not a license. Just do it, and stick to the basics please. That should keep you busy enough that you don't have time to talk about it.

You seperate your memories and doubt what you know, develop subconscious coping mechanisms and become very, very good at compartmentalizing, but often have no idea. When you're thinking about the good things, that's all you feel. When you start talking about the bad things, the extent of the negative emotions is startling, because they're usually locked away. because the abuse is ingrained so deep that remembering it brings out really visceral reactions. Certain smells to this day will make me feel sick or make me start crying in fear. I wasn't in a cult, but I was abused.

I wonder if I have PTSD, reading this comment string... I (and many other students) was abused by my teachers. If you didn’t obey them you became the “bad” student, and “good” students were basically treated like they could do no wrong, even if they started it. (I remember being punished because I didn’t like someone’s music, and they were a “good student”, so the same song was played thrice... And that’s not even counting being stood down for defending myself from someone)
Think Umbridge from Harry Potter. That was my teacher... I have panic attacks just watching the movie, and have to leave the room when she’s onscreen, and I’ve been out of the class for... holy heck, nine years now...
      Sorry just thinking aloud...

I'm an atheist and even I know those ain't real christians.
-To clarify what I meant by "real christians" : these ppl don't actually believe in God in any way. They just use God as an excuse to get away with their actions.
I also discovered I'm more of an agnostic rather than an atheist, in which case I wanna make it clear that believing in a God doesn't determine wether or not you have morals

Much is hidden in many churches disguised as Gods words, but is Mans idea of God. Humanity has a big lesson to learn about how low consciousness has fallen as we raise consciousness higher. For many generations humans have treated each other without heart (no compassion or kindness). We are moving in a higher level as I speak. True kindness & love will be the norm. Truth will not be twisted like it has been for many generations. Our hearts will be healed. Our mind & hearts will be one.

My question is, why didn’t the people that fled the cult report the cult to the police of the outside world?

/Issa and Larray \ maybe but if they fled they certainly fled for a reason, and would’ve known that they were fleeing from illegal stuff, so they should’ve reported it regardless of a cult or not

Ironically, had this cult not used violence they would have lost no one - she was obviously happy to be there until they started punishments, both physical and psychological.

Had they not been violent and emotionally abusive, they wouldnt have been a cult, they would have been Christian's- if they held to the Bible alone.
