Exactly. I think if people truly want to glorify God with their gifts, they will want to work hard to create art that is creative and well-thought-out.

I'm a musician. (Organist/pianist,keyboardist) and have been playing in church since I was 12yrs old. (I'm 61 now) I've played for almost every denomination you can name, as well as schools, community groups, soloists, competitions, voice students, colleges, theaters musicals, clubs, you name it, I've been there. But, playing in church, was where my heart was. But, I left the church a few years ago, because I didnt seem to fit "in" any longer. The rock bands, special lighting, mood settings, fog machines, worship team leaders who were more like rock "idols", etc. took me to a place whwre I didnt feel like I was in cburch any longer. It was more like my theater days, and the church was now NO different than any theater I played in. Worshiping the Most Holy One of Isreal should be so much more than the trite festival type "worship" that is now in the modern day church. The great hymns are gone, speaking and singjng words of knowledge and meaning are missing, and praying to the Most High has become a trendy, fun filled rock concert, instead of worshiping the One True HOLY LORD. I tried to fit in, and did for several years, but it kept getting more secular each year, to where there was no difference between a rock concert in a theater, and "church". Its nice to see your channel saying some of these things, thank you so much.
This is one of the reasons why my husband and I have really struggled with going to church these past few years. We're in our 30s and all we want is real genuine church, not trendy church. We've just had a little daughter and I really have struggled with not taking her to church regularly when church was such a large part of my life going up and well into my 20s. I don't know why but it just seems like it has changed and we are left behind. I am praying that we find community and other Christians that feel this way, because I feel very alone at the moment.
It's almost like everyone nowadays cares more about enjoying themselves than actually dedicating themselves to a higher power. All while claiming the moniker of "spiritual" and claiming everyone but themselves who actually cares about such dedication "hypocrites".
This secular type music has almost destroyed the pentacostal movement. Now instead of worship, everyone just sways like there in a trance. Very few churches now that have real worship.
@@dawsonowens1207 unfortunately Satan has influenced or should I say perverted what God has predestined...the less we mention and acknowledge Jesus the less power we have...and we as Christ followers should know better but have allowed ourselves to be blindsided...hope this answers your why..
The problem with most 'Contemporary Christian Music' is that it has abandoned Jesus. It stews on struggles; or refers to some being that could just as easily be a romantic partner, rather than the Creator Almighty. It tries so hard to be 'seeker-sensitive' that it fails to deliver Who people are seeking. It seeks to remake God as needing man, instead of man needing God. Some of it seems to lack reverence. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. There does not seem to be an honest understanding of the desperate straits that man is in, nor of the magnitude of God's grace and mercy in delivering us from Hell. Much of what is passed off as Christian music only vaguely fits the bill. It is pop music first, and Christian second. We need to get to a place where we understand that God is to be feared. We have grace and mercy, yes; but the Bible warns very strongly about the dangers of using that grace as an excuse to go along with the world Monday through Saturday, and the results of being a Christian in word only. We need music which recognizes that regardless of our struggles, we are called to be holy and righteous even if it costs us everything. God is not a genie, or a magic fairy Who does our wishes. We are His creation, made to do His wishes, and our music should reflect that.
"You have to put out a Christian album, a Christmas album, a Live album, a Worship album and a Greatest Hits album. That's one heck of a career if you ask me!" Lol!😂😂 Every Christian artist out there!
"We have pretty much given up on reaching non-Christians...." That's the one line that has explained modern hermit-like Christian youth culture for the past 15 years.
@Dancer, are you kidding? People are accepting Jesus every day through believers. There are youth doing great things for Jesus. If you only look at the negative, that is all you will get.
Exactly those chords!! And let's not forget the 'Bing-chinga-CHING' style of guitar strumming that not only is about 90% of Christian music rhythm, but also about 90% of today's country music too. Awful, awful stuff.
It is hard to find good Christian music. Although I've found myself liking some of the mainstream music and adding it to my playlist, I end up finding myself wanting more of the old hymns and not the "oh poor me and my vague issue" stuff. I want more praise music that just sings about God being just awesome. It's not supposed to be about us anyway, and if it is, shouldn't the songs be more specific as to what we should do to live a passionate and Christlike life? I also really like the artists from the 60s to the 80s when music in general was developing more. There's Larry Norman and Petra, who have made a lot of profound songs. Sorry for the rant but this video opened the floodgates. *WATER REFERENCE*
There's plenty of good Christian music out there. Examples: Danny Gokey, Elevation Worship, Lacrae, Housefire 3, Casting Crowns, Israel Houghton, Micah Stampley, Fred Hammond, NF, Andy Mineo, Trip Lee, Skillet etc. The problem with Christian music, is that the radio likes playing the same songs repeatedly from generic artists, so people are lead to believe that all Christian music sucks.
I completely agree with you. All of that music was far superior to the cheap, watered down (another water reference, heh heh), Christian music we have now.
"His robes for mine: God’s justice is appeased. Jesus is crushed, and thus the Father’s pleased. Christ drank God’s wrath on sin, then cried, 'Tis done!' Sin’s wage is paid; propitiation won." The hymns are where its at.
Blessings, by Laura Story was written based on life experiences. Laura wrote it while her husband was in the hospital with cancer. It’s an amazing song. It really touches your heart ❤️
Especially since the only genres they play on Christian radio is pop/soft rock and gospel (not to mention that they're on segregated "black" and "white" stations) Its like you have to give up on quality music when you become Christian. Play some gospel reggae, jazz, afro-beats, latin and island praise! Or throw a finger picked guitar or a killer bass line at least 😧
I often struggle to find good modern Christian music even when browsing Tidal or researching online. Most of my favorites come from older bands such as Jars of Clay, PFR, DC Talk, Petra, and Creed. DC talk was good enough to make secular radio stations request that the band place less emphasis on Jesus so they could air them.
I mean Christian music is literally at this point worse than pop music in regards to formulaic writing, as funny as this video was it's only funny because it's completely true. They know since they can push away criticism by playing the "God card" of music; they can write absolutely bland and meaningless music and Christians will still listen to it. The whole idea is "well it's easy to listen to and sing along to, and it's coming from a good place", and then because of that we can completely ignore just how bland it is because it says the word God in it. It's kinda disgusting to me, but idk. Anyone who gets offended by that is stupid, because it's the truth.
@@mav.- I mostly agree with you. I mean I still think that everyone has their own opinion/style and that's fine, but I personally really don't like the repettitiveness either. ~:~
@@mav.- Ye. The funny part is people will say metal is "satan music" and then turn around and listen to "good good father x100" whilst my "satan music" has lyrics with much more meaning and sing much better praise to God.
Appreciated!! I'll be sure to look into some of these artists I haven't heard of. A few of them I know are good, but are a bit too "vanilla" for me. ;)
I'm late to reply, but your spot on. I don't see what other's see in CCM nowadays, I've been listening to CCM for a little over 20 years and the mid 2000s changed everything. I can't stand Air1 or Klove any more :/ I used to have those on 24-7, now it's Metal all the way. My friends have moved on to Rap or Hard core bands, CCM is just so awful that more and more are turning away from it. Non Christians don't even listen to CCM at all, I've met more metal heads that aren't saved, that listen to Christian metal ( yes there's a lot of bands out there, especially from Metal Core through Black ) and are totally fine with it. Trying to find someone who isn't a Christian that listens to Newsboys or has even heard of them is a challenge in and of itself. Nuff said.
If it's popular, It's probably unbiblical. That's why believers are also known as, The Remnant. ~ WAIT … What a great name for my band! THE REMNANT !!! (Now what is the name of this record label?)
+Gerald Njuguna --Amen! I'm glad to see SOMEONE here who knows what *actual* Christian worship music is! God bless you, brother! These people here in comments are clueless. You're the ONLY one I have found thus far who KNOWS what TRUE worship music is! That's sad to me.. Pray for them all.
It's a reference to Michael Tate joining the Newsboys but it also has overtones of iconic bands like Petra who changed their singer... the sarcastic point is: why start something new/original when you can just shuffle a few pieces around and capitalize on the existing market value of the current band name?
"We've basically given up on reaching out to non-Christians" SO SAD BUT SO TRUE! That's what I like about bands that give out music that can be interpreted in many different ways. Like Skillet and Thousand Foot Crutch.
This is going to sound weird but the way I judge christian products is if it feels like they are trying to sell me it just cause I'm a christian; basically creating something to reach a demographic just to make money. if I feel that in your music, book, movie etc. I'm not going to like it. Also when the Christian industry is CONSTANTLY happy and fluffy. Y'all life hurts. The psalms are not just praises but laments which always end in praise. This is why I like christian rock and rap because they talk about real issues but still end in praise.
You should check out Remedy Drive. They are doing some really interesting things with their musical content as far as lyrics go, and they talk about a ton of difficult topics with a lot of candor.
You left out one popular CCM song format...the Jesus is my boyfriend songs. Lines like this could be in any love song.... You make me feel so good.’ ‘I’m falling in love with you.’ ‘Oh, I adore you.’‘Touch me, touch me, 'I love the way you hold me' and the list goes on and on.
"I want to touch you" is another. Plus even though there's some truth to the lyrics in Draw Me Close to You, it still sounds way too sensual and romantic...
RockyMtn Hiker we see the way we are. Paul had an encounter with Christ- which could be seen as God “touching his heart”. And until we go past religious routine to actually falling in love-through the Holy Spirit - with all that Jesus is, Christ-like living would be elusive and frustrating. Guess what I’m trying to say is: you gotta stop processing those lyrics through sensual filters. They speak more to having a personal walk with God, where your heart is open to Him and His word, beyond just being perfunctory “Christians”
The Forehead Well, some people like myself think it sounds cheesy. I've been in praise and worship for 13 years and when I learned of the "Unforseen kiss" version, I insisted on using that. And I also never knew who did the original.
In this verse, Samuel, one of the early leaders of Israel, orders genocide against a neighbouring people: “This is what the Lord Almighty says... ‘Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’” (1 Samuel 15:3)The ending of Psalm 137, a psalm which was made into a disco calypso hit by Boney M, is often omitted from readings in church: “Happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us - he who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.” (Psalm 137:9)The Lord is speaking to Abraham in this story where God commands him to sacrifice his son: ‘Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.’ (Genesis 22:2)
Every time my mother turns on the radio, even through my own headphones, even through my own daydreaming, I can INSTANTLY tell when a Christian song has come on. And because they all sound the exact same, my brain is always trying to "remember" the song, even though I've never heard it before...
It's not just the Christian music industry. Anyone remember "I swear" done by both All-4-one and John Michael Montgomery? Any given song can be used by multiple groups depending on the writers and contract deals.
Westdog 01 I’m of that opinion. Having played in a church band for 4 years, there was clearly a formula that was used. Artists doing covers is also more rampant in Christian music than any other genre of music I’m aware of. Literally 5 or more versions of the same song is crazy. If I listen to CCM it’s only because I have my daughter with me. I get nothing from the lyrics or musical ideas.
YES! NAILED IT! What really bothers me is that there are also tons of talented and original Christian bands out there playing on the side, but they fall under the same umbrella term. To me that's like not making a distinction between funk and disco. Can we have a term for the kind of Christian music that all sounds the same, talks about the same stuff, and has the same set of chords, and have a different term for a Christian music that's actually music?
Are you freaking kidding me????/He is one of the worst offenders. If one of his songs didn't include a thousand Oh oh oh's in in the chorus, I would fall over and die of a stroke. His CRAP MUSIC is bubble gum for Christians and he is no spring chicken.

Every pastor preaches to listen to Christian music instead of “secular music” 🤦🏽♂️, but this video kind of describes why I don’t for a reason. I am a musician, but musically I can’t stand listening to songs that sound the same. Not here to hate btw. Now if radio channels like the Fish in my state of GA (idk if they play the fish anywhere else) plays like Black Choir Gospel, ooooo I’d pull over to the side of the road just to get dancing and singing
Becky Boofer Calling it a lifestyle shows you think it is a choice, like wearing Levi's instead of Wrangler. I also don't think I said you are homophobic. Hating gay people doesn't make someone phobic, it makes them obviously ignorant of biology.
I'm curious to know what the satire would look like if this were to focus on actual worship music. It seems to me that a lot of Christian music isn't actually sung *to* God, but instead it's just about generally Christianity-related topics. Thankfully that seems to be changing a bit, but I'm hoping the industry as a whole will catch on sooner rather than later. I would so much rather be singing to God than just singing about something that is faith-related. When I turn on the radio, I want to hear a song that can take me into full-on worship mode. I would love to hear Him being glorified over the airwaves.
It would look exactly the same. I also love worship songs sung to God, and especially prefer them over vaguely faith-related songs, but that doesn't mean all worship songs are made equal. A lot of them contain the very same vague, repetative, boring lyrics.
Actually I'm glad that there's a variety of worship and struggle-related songs cuz worship songs alone get boring fast. Sure, you're singing to God but the context must vary. That's just my opinion.
thanks John for making this video. I am Musician who is Christian who has been trying to put a band together for 5 years. My music comes from the heart, Is rock and will have no repetitive lyrics that are empty. I know that sells records. But as God knows my heart he knows the kind of music I listen too and want to write and how it will reach people
Very funny and very true. Watching this should not just make us laugh, but also make us truly examine the state of Christianity in this country where we can laugh at this so hard because the majority of it is true.
this is literally my pet peeve as a musician and a christian. I hate how most common Christian songs all follow the same formula and become tired and uncreative. this commentary on it is funny though, appreciate someone actually commenting on it.
********Wow!!!!!!******* ... Instantly, I remembered a quick conversation from my early 20s (about 20 years ago). I had an interest in becoming a Christian show producer. I happened to meet one at a coffee shop concert. He seemed very honest and weary, telling me with a sigh he thought there was too much "Industry" in the Christian music industry. John Crist is right on!!!!
Alexander Ferguson Blimey Cow did a hilarious video called "How to right a worship song in 3 minutes" or something like that and is similar in many ways, but both videos are fantastic.
Someone else may have mentioned this staple of Contemporary Christian music.... the repetition of phrases. Today in church we repeated the same 3 word phrase 13, yes, 13 times in a row!! Last Sunday, different church 4 word phrase repeated 8 times in a row. Are the writers too lazy to come up with more than a few words and a variety of notes? It's so frustrating...definitely not soul stirring!!
I went to this church where after the 3rd chorus, they repeated the bridge, then the chorus again, then the bridge again... You get the point. Like 3 songs lasted about half an hour, if I remember right. I haven't been there in awhile.
This is why Christian Hard Rock/Metal is where its at. The passion and honesty in the lyrics is always so filled with conviction, I feel closer to God when listening to it.
You guys nailed one of my favorite pet peeves... insincere copycat sounding Christian music that turns people away from Christ or encourages superficial feel good Tunes. How about you give a try to Keith Green, Larry Norman, Petra, some of the old U2 songs, like in the Name of Love and streets With No Name. Top it off with my latest fave, Josh Garrels. Get your scuba gear ready ...you'll be going a little deeper... as your feet may fail
Sebastian Feuerstein "How Could You Leave Us" has the same feel of "Cats in the Cradle", by Harry Chapin. We need songs like this to help us wake up to the reality of the pain that we cause other people. On the other hand, I hear a lot of hurt and anger in NF's songs, but where is the Redemption? Where does Jesus heal, like he promises? I'm not saying that every song has to have a happy ending, but God must be glorified for the ability to heal. Otherwise, he, who came to steal kill and destroy, gets the glory for all the damage that he caused.
I do feel this way about a lot of Christian music and that's why I fell in love with Phil Wickham. I'll admit, some of his songs are generic, but I love the energy in his music, and quite a lot of them are really personal and written from the heart that true Christians can relate to.
As a professional musician who grew up in church I've always been drawn to worship and prophetic worship music...artists like Israel Houghton...Jesus Culture...Planetshakers...Marvin Sapp and Hillsong just to name a few...what I've also learned is the more you grow in Christ, your taste in music sort of evolves...worship to me is a very deep intimate session with the creator and I've always been drawn to that type of music.
Luckily we have TobyMac who creates amazing music 😅😂😂 also Austin French but their songs sadly don’t get played on the Christian Radio station that I listen to😔
Just recently discovered Austin French, and yeah, it's amazing. I also really like for King & Country, among others. It's good to know that despite the truthfulness of this vid, they're still people for whom the music is about glorifying God and stuff than politics and what will sell.
I’m both laughing and crying because of how this video points out the flaws of the ccm industry. My heart is filled with joy and great sadness simultaneously.
Thank *god* for bands like RED who are “Christian”, but are too dope and original for you to even realize. Or that have lyrics where you can interpret it several ways, thus to connect with all types of people.

Sounds like a great name for a band: "The Storm-Valley Desert".
@@stacey738 Maybe try going to a Catholic church? They're pretty genuine and all about tradition.

Ha. True.
In Beavis voice "FIRE! FIRE! Hehehe man! Christian music rules!"

Especially since the only genres they play on Christian radio is pop/soft rock and gospel (not to mention that they're on segregated "black" and "white" stations)
Its like you have to give up on quality music when you become Christian.
Preach! I feel like sometimes our faith can become segregated.

RockyMtn Hiker we see the way we are. Paul had an encounter with Christ- which could be seen as God “touching his heart”. And until we go past religious routine to actually falling in love-through the Holy Spirit - with all that Jesus is, Christ-like living would be elusive and frustrating.

I would love to hear Him being glorified over the airwaves.
dagman85 true. Now I realize that they aren't sung to God but are more about talking about struggles that other believers deal with.
True!!!

Check out Psalm 136!
David A Sholes Jr Hey how bout NF? Check him out, He's Good :)
David A Sholes Jr K, I understand. But I don't know what to say, I don't know 🤔
How about the Resurrection Band? They sound like Skynyrd, the rest of your list is great.
Benjamin James' album Penumbra is alao a blessing to the ears.
NF kinda defies this 😂😂
LeafTheLeopard 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Gotta be an nf fan to get it
Oh my god so true!
That’s the point.. he rarely talks about it
He probably has vague struggle tattooed on his ass.
Admit it, you’ve got nearly every song on the K-love radio memorized
I thought it was K-LUV...
WHY IS THIS DUDE STALKING ME
that radio is so artificial
My mom gets mad at me because I don't like listening to Joy FM all the time because I say all Christian music is the same.
I have those friends who listen to nothing but Christian music on the radio 24/7. Look, I love God and all, but doesn't it get a _little_ tedious?
Hahaha That John Mark McMillan reference
I do feel this way about a lot of Christian music and that's why I fell in love with Phil Wickham. I'll admit, some of his songs are generic, but I love the energy in his music, and quite a lot of them are really personal and written from the heart that true Christians can relate to.
I love John mark McMillan, I always made this point to everyone and it’s good to see that I’m not alone
It's so good to see others feel the way I do about Christian music these days! This is so accurate!
Lacey sturm is my fav Christian rock artist been a fan ever since flyleaf ❤
Yes I love her! And Flyleaf is one of those special bands that “crossed over” to mainstream rock stations!
@@leeleel.674 Exactly!! ❤❤❤
@@brandyguitron6729 You know she still sings? Check out Love Reflect Back.
@@Unknownevanuser yeah! I ordered it a couple days ago! ❤
"I am a friend of God". Nailed it. The. Worst.
Ti Y Its sad that You see It that way.
So we're enemies of God?
Melanie And children can’t ever be friends or friend-ly with their parent?
More! Water! References! 😂
You just made this Larry Norman, Steve Taylor, Rez Band fan's day. Thank you.
Don't forget Petra!
Basement Berean ; Steve Taylor! Yes! Remember the song, Meltdown at Madame Tussaud's and Ballad of Baby Doe?!?
Luckily we have TobyMac who creates amazing music 😅😂😂 also Austin French but their songs sadly don’t get played on the Christian Radio station that I listen to😔
Just recently discovered Austin French, and yeah, it's amazing. I also really like for King & Country, among others. It's good to know that despite the truthfulness of this vid, they're still people for whom the music is about glorifying God and stuff than politics and what will sell.
0:38 OMG When they played the Christian Chord chart, I was INSTANTLY transported to church! Like, "I know this song!!!" 😂🤣😂🤣
“The revolving doors” that was brutal! Hahahaha!
Faceless 🎶
Yup. Pretty much true. I'm christian and I despise the uncreativity of these songs
