  • The Rippingtons are a Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz group, founded by guitarist and composer Russ Freeman in 1985. The group has passed the thirty year mark, and continues to innovate. Under Freeman's production, the group has released 22 albums, all of which have attained top 5 Billboard status, with 5 of them reaching #1. Their debut album, "Moonlighting", which Jazziz magazine has called "the number one most influential contemporary jazz album of all time."
The group's influences are wide-ranging, from instrumental pop, to rock, to world music, to EDM, to R&B. Some artists having recorded with the Rippingtons include Arturo Sandoval, Jeffrey Osbourne, Kirk Whalum, Kenny G, Dave Grusin, the late Joe Sample, Dave Koz, David Benoit, Patti Austin, Peter White, Rick Braun, Zak Wylde, and many more. The Rippingtons were chosen Best Group 2000 by Billboard BET, and Best Group 2 years in a row, 2001 and 2002 by the Oasis Awards, in addition to Achievement in Video 2001.

Mine also, Julie. I first learned of their music in the early 1990s via The Weather Channel. I then subscribed to Jazz IS magazine.GRP Records and Jazz artists were tight at that time.

Russ Freeman is incredibly talented and versatile. Over the years I have seen Rippingtons members come and go and yet all of them were excellent musicians. I understand his concept to keep the Rippingtons fresh and vibrant and to keep the band going and going. This is why he relates to keeping the Rippingtons brand intact, rather than suffering a breakup like the Beatles. Another one of my all time favorites. He holds it together....... till today.
While listening to his music, I am fascinated, it just amazes me how he conceives and arranges all the melodies.ie. Snowbound. He can go from Funk, to latin to classical to fusion to modern smooth jazz with ease!
Guy is simply a musical genius!
I have the entire collection! To say the least, it's one of my most prized possessions. Music is indeed food for the Soul. Thanks Russ and The Rippingtons.

Indeed, I had the AWESOME pleasure of seeing them perform live in Mobile, AL back in 2000 at the Saenger Theater and when I tell you these guys NAILED every song they performed with FLAWLESS precision, THEY DID!! I do believe Mr. Russ Freeman changes guitars at least five times to produce the sound needed for certain songs.😄 I play bass but, after HEARING/SEEING them do their thing, I knew I was in need of much more practice to get to this level of play. ONE OF THE "BEST" GROUPS EVER!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌🏾👍🏾❤💯

Always enjoyed touring when the Ripps were on the bill. Russ and Kim were so inspiring to be around, I always felt as though I had a crash course in new perspectives where melody is concerned after an evening with them. I spoke with Kim not long ago and he as well speaks of great times and memories in the early 90s with that gig as well.
I look back into my career and there are some gigs that were fine but ya know after a while and enough performances that counting is no longer an option and lanyards that are hanging in the closest are to many to discern as if there were only 12 hanging, you can start putting specific performances or tours and sessions in category, and some are well, not to sound negative, but for lack of a better way of putting at the moment and it's not at all a negative when I say, some are forgettable in that I have had some folks comment on seeing me play at the so-and-so with XYZ at the XYZ venue back in the day, and I have to catch myself before I say "um no I think your mistaken I did not play that tour" and then it comes to me Oh yea I did do that tour, or Oh yea I did do that session Oh yea there is my credit on the Cd or the album. And then there are tours or three night sit in for someone because of illness or double booking or ? And spot session work some not credited and early forgot about, and they just stick with you for what ever reason, for me, I think it was always inspiration in working with others that made me want to play better want to impress or meet the skill sets of my peers and not want to regret a session or live performance. To me the late mid 80s to early 90s were the heyday of live venues, in and outdoors and such abundant work one could most often have choices ass to what coast to tour and season, The lame spandex and big hair and weird make up the ladies used I could do without the memories of, but! Yea, that was the contrast, I suppose. LOL
