- The Rippingtons are a Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz group, founded by guitarist and composer Russ Freeman in 1985. The group has passed the thirty year mark, and continues to innovate. Under Freeman's production, the group has released 22 albums, all of which have attained top 5 Billboard status, with 5 of them reaching #1. Their debut album, "Moonlighting", which Jazziz magazine has called "the number one most influential contemporary jazz album of all time."
The group's influences are wide-ranging, from instrumental pop, to rock, to world music, to EDM, to R&B. Some artists having recorded with the Rippingtons include Arturo Sandoval, Jeffrey Osbourne, Kirk Whalum, Kenny G, Dave Grusin, the late Joe Sample, Dave Koz, David Benoit, Patti Austin, Peter White, Rick Braun, Zak Wylde, and many more. The Rippingtons were chosen Best Group 2000 by Billboard BET, and Best Group 2 years in a row, 2001 and 2002 by the Oasis Awards, in addition to Achievement in Video 2001.
Unbelievable talent here. One thing that stands out to me is that the bassist and drummer are making virtually no eye contact but are totally locked in! Also, how Russ lets the players each have some time to have some solos.
Wish I could see this awesome musicians live!!!!!!
MAN what I wouldn't give to see these guys live!
Some of the most beautiful sounds a human being can experience. This transcends music for me. Takes me to another place. It's a true gift of the highest order. I could keep going. But I need to keep listening.......other worldly.....
Spot.
This band brings me peace whenever I listen to them! Just magnificent music!
Saw them live about 10 times. Best time was for my 50 bday ( 22 years ago) in row 1 WPB aud somewhere! Just outstanding!
their sound never gets old...what a legendary band.........love them
I see them whenever I can. "Taos" is a favorite tune to turn up while driving through twisty mountain roads.
First witnessed the brilliance of Russ Freeman and the Rippingtons at the Bummbershoot music festival in Seattle Washington in the late 80's. What an introduction to this fabulous magic!!!!! Thank you for 35 years of jazz of the best kind!!!!
I came across these guys in 2010. My only regret is that didn't find them sooner. Saw them live a few times. They had a meet and session after each of the shows I attended. It was a pleasure to speak with each these individuals. Brandon Fields', Russ Freeman's, Rico Belled's and Bill Heller's solo albums are extremely good. check them out if haven't them.
Since I love Jazz, I came across the Rippingtons back in 88 and have been listening to them ever since. When I was posted to CFB Baden in Germany, I used to slip the CD in the car stereo and cruise the Autobahn listening to the Rippingtons. On my many trips to St.Tropez, I used to listen to their Weekend in Monaco CD. Man I miss that.
As I stated on part 1…..Russ Freeman has a way with jazz that takes you somewhere relaxing. Whether is the tropics…or the mountains… is just brilliant smooth jazz! 🌴🤙🏼
My granny loved The Rippingtons. Which makes them Granny-nominated jazz group.
All of you g
uys is not a human But you are a Robots of Musicians your timing is so perfect and the tone of all instrument is so so so good but i'm the bass guy i realy love the sound of your bass is so clearly and bright but in the low note sound is so deep and powerful i really love thas you are a super super super musician in the world Love Yiu All.
First time I saw the Rippingtons was in Dallas in the early 90s. I have seen them so many times over the years I cannot count. Russ was very friendly and often stayed late to sign autographs. I have a pic with me, my son, Russ and Erik Marienthall. Welcome to the Saint James Club and Caribbean Breeze are my two favs, but nothing beats High roller live. My only regret is that I didnt get to see them when David Benoit was with them. So many different players were with them over the years, and it seemed like every time we saw them half the band was different? Still, no better acoustic player alive than Russ. His sound checks were better than most other concerts I saw. For his true fans, also check out his work with Greg Chaqico. Fantastic stuff on a Sunday morning.
0:00 - Destiny (Tourist in Paradise)
5:00 - North Star (Curves Ahead)
s/o my boy Neon007 for the recognition prowess
They are all great and Russ's music is so unique and awesome! Brandon Fields.is smooth as silk and you can see Russ enjoying his buttery greatness! Live they were the best I have ever seen and Russ's music always leaves space for all to shine. Kudos, Russ and Company!
As a long long listener to smooth jazz, since 1997, listening to the Rippingtons feels like I'm on a musical adventure that takes me out of my community, out of my hometown. I feel like I'm traveling to the Rocky Mountains, to South Dakota, and out west. Just imagine the possibilities that smooth jazz played by the Rippingtons can do for the soul.
They were here in Detroit at the Jazz Fest i miss them everytime..that sax player owning that sax..love it..
LOVE THE RIPPINGTONS FOREVER AND EVER
More than twenty years ago I told Russ Freeman, your overdriven guitar and jazz is such an amazing combination, he agreed but also told me that smooth jazz radio didn't like distorted guitars. I'm always grateful he kept those sounds in his tunes. Timeless music, 30 years later I listen to it with the same great feelings than the first time. This morning I listened to Destiny from the album who brought me a lot of memories of my radio show and this afternoon, surprise, I found this awesome video!
It's great to see Brandon Fields in the band, he was a founder member and in fact he played in Tourist in Paradise where Destiny and A Summer Night in Brazil are.
Was introduced to the Rippingtons at the Clearwater Jazz Festival years ago..... have been addicted ever since!!!! Just wish they would visit the country I escaped to from the usa maddness!!!!
Saw them also at the Clwr Jazz Fest too, they are awesome, curious here, where did you end up going? I'm still in Clearwater but will be retiring this year (that's the plan) and gonna travel, for sure.
I was a fan right from the beginning… Still have my Moonlighting cassette, I think! Their song Emerald City is one of my very favorites, although I pretty much love the whole catalog!
Black Diamond and Curves Ahead!!! Gotta have ‘em! 👍
the GREAT POWER OF MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Baita baixista, baita saxsonista, baita baterista, baita tecladista, baita guitarista, baita banda, baita banda, baita banda. The best.
Since I'm the first to comment on this jazzy masterpiece I think The Rippingtons should send me free tickets to their next concert once the quarantine is over 😘
Wow, what a killer set of the best stuff! Love Russ and the guys, they are rippin'! So good!
the original sax player Brandon Fields... awesome!!!!

Fun Fact : Brandon Fields : The Sax guy in this one. Actually played with Rippingtons before Jeff Kashiwa arrived. He played a lot of jazz/westcoast artists albums in 80s and 90s.
What is the name of the first song, it is epic with that nice drop in the chorus! Reminds me of early T-Square!
The track is called "Destiny" from one of their earliest albums, "Tourist in Paradise."
any star virtuoso has its little fails 😎
