14: 03 The wild part of about games like Hyrule Warriors being Spin Offs from the Dynasty Warriors Franchise is, that the entire Dynasty Warriors Franchise is a Spin off itself. The Original Dynasty Warriors on PS1, known in Japan as Sangokumusō, was considered to be a Spin Off from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms / Sangokushi Strategy games. The game that most of the world knows as Dynasty Warriors 2 was released in Japan as Shin Sangokumusō, and Koei Tecmo doesn´t consider the PS1 game as part of this line of games, thus making the games from the PS2 onward a Spin Off Franchise. That makes Hyrule Warriors a Spin Off from a Spin Off from a Spin Off from a Book Adaptataion.
The Dynasty Warriors spinoffs are an interesting case imo. Because most of them are pretty damn fun, but they get slept on by fans of both original series. Like I know Hyrule Warriors is mostly an arcade game, but Age of Calamity has my second favourite story out of the Wild Era trilogy of Zelda games. Even if it's not canon (or an earlier timeline split) due to conflicting story details that occur before Terrako even goes back in time. And yes, I think Strikers counts as a Warriors game as it's classed as such on the Japanese site and the English wikipedia. It just redesigns some of the mechanics to fit the Persona 5 lore and gameplay, similar to how the Master Cycle was redesigned as a weapon for Zelda in Age of Calamity. The two Attack on Titan games they made are sometimes counted as well because mechanics from it were brought over to the mainline Warriors games, but they're a lot lighter with the usual gameplay.
One thing worth noting about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is that it has its own bundle with the Switch. Still super popular though, and incredibly fun. Just worth noting. I prefer Mario Kart myself over the main series too.
19:46 Metroid Prime games are Canon to the mainline series. There used to be a debate before cause the main games never referenced Prime. But as of Samus Returns, the final boss was reconned to be Meta Ridley same as the Prime 3. It chronologically takes place right after that game.
45:32 so, yes, i would classify halo as a spiritual spinoff because of how engrained marathon’s themes/iconography is in halo, in the same breath, i would still classify bioshock as a spiritual successor to system shock because it’s less closely related (albeit still related, just less than marathon/halo)
Metroid Prime isn’t a spin-off. All 3 games take place after Metroid 1 but before Metroid 2, when Samus goes forward to wipe the metroids all out. I remember reading that years ago.
Spinoffs can still be canon, and I’d say the Prime games certainly qualify as one. It was decided pretty early in Prime 1’s development that the Prime games would be part of the timeline; their story arc was just kept largely self-contained and unrelated to the mainline story, instead focusing on new planets and characters. This was a deliberate choice to give the devs working on the Prime and 2D games as much creative freedom as possible, without having to worry about contradicting each other.
@@deathtrooper2048no it’s still a Metroid game just in 3D and first person. A spin-off is Super Mario Bros. to Mario Kart to Mario Party, completely different genres with the same characters and IP. 2D Metroid and 3D Metroid are still basically the same thing. You couldn’t get Metroid Prime without having Metroid or Super Metroid first to build off of.
World of Warcraft was originally marketed as WarCraft 4 and was supposed to pick up the story at the end of The Frozen Throne expansion for WarCraft 3, which I would say makes it a sequel, even taking into account the massive departures WoW expansions have taken from the original trilogy's narrative - since they never made another RTS game to follow up WarCraft 3, WoW is still officially part of the core storyline and should be treated like a sequel.
The Metroid Prime games have been confirmed as canon to the mainline series; they’re just a side story arc in the timeline, that’s all. That said, I think they still qualify as spinoffs, since the Prime arc is mostly self-contained and the games themselves have a different dev team and gameplay style. Great inclusion, though; I wasn’t expecting to see them appear on this list!
You're kind of right with the Call of Duty. The change came with Activision's own research. People recognized the Call of Duty name. Modern Warfare lost something like 40% name recognition. I don't remember the exact number but it was huge. They didn't want to risk losing those potential sales, so the COD got added back in.
I remember playing a COD game that would give you what they called shell-shock when a grenade or tank shell exploded near you. I think it may have been the first one (it was definitely on pc)

Another spin off. Super smash bros, the assist trophy character sukapon from a Japan exclusive super famicom game I can’t for the life of me is called but it has the same types of fighting style of special moves, push the other players off the platform and button combos in more of the same vein as smash then other games like street fighter

It was Infinity Ward that wanted to brand it solely as Modern Warfare 2, but Activision went above their heads and branded it as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Cos Infinity Ward didn’t want to be lumped up with Treyarch, they originally didn’t like the fact that Treyarch made the 3rd game as to them Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was known as Call of Duty 3 internally.
Dynasty warriors is a spin-off of itself, the first Dynasty warriors was a 1v1 fighting game but only released in Japan. That's why Dynasty warriors 2 in JP is Dynasty warriors 1 in the rest of the world.
Maybe it's just me but I'm surprised Nintendo Gamecube didn't sold that well considering it had alot of people favorite first party games from many series. Such as Mario Kart Double Dash, Fire Emblem - Path of Radiance, F-Zero GX, Pokemon Colosseum and XD, Metroid Prime, and Paper Mario - The Thousand-Year Door. There are many more good games, but these are the games that people consider the best in their series even to this day which is alot better than just good. Not to mention Tales of series although not the best, it did became as iconic as it is today through gamecube aka Tales of Symphonia. And for Mario Party people favorite is either Nintendo 64 version or the Gamecube version, so Gamecube is up there for Mario Party too. Pretty wild. I wonder if it has something to do with Gamecube not being all that portable, or not having a very unique mechanic like the DS, Wii, and Switch? Lol XD People say the games are the things that sell the console, like both Switch and original Xbox had. But I guess this proves that doesn't get applied everytime though sadly, lol XD
I hate the rabbids too. They were annoying as fuck as a child and now I hate them even more than ever before. Honestly Mario and Rayman should’ve been the crossover instead
W Persona. 5 can def be overwhelming at first cuz it takes persona 3 and 4s mechanics and absolutely perfects them. It’s insane. If you like 5 you’re gonna love Persons 3 Reload. Persona 3 story is the best story I have ever experienced.
Aside from what was already discussed about Valve games in the video is how ridiculous that it went from Quake Engine to Half-Life to Counter-Strike to Left 4 Dead. Left 4 Dead's prototype being based on CS:S really makes this a long chain of connections, even if it is not a spin-off at all
Was not sure where to put this but, how plausible would it be to see a video describing all the Halo bundles with xboxes? Like Halo 1's translucent green Xbox and Halo 2's Translucent blue Xbox released in Canada, Europe and Asia.
GTA is not a spinoff. Keep in mind that in GTA3 you could still change the camera to top-down and play that way. They didn't decide to do something different because of a creative vision or a divergence of design, they would have made it 3d in the first place if they could have.
Metroid prime isn’t even a spin-off and it’s not more popular than 2D Metroid games, Metroid Dread is the best selling game in the franchise, and there’s no uncertainty or confusion about if it’s canon to the older games, it takes place between the original Metroid on the NES and Metroid II on the gameboy
@@deathtrooper2048I don’t think you understand what a spin-off is. Metroid Prime is a mainline Metroid game, it’s basically 3D Super Metroid in 1st person.
I think modern warfare actually should count as a spinoff, because cod 3 connects to world at war, which connects to black ops. Modern warfare, since before the 2019 reboot, has always been pretty self contained.
err... why's Metroid Prime in this list at all? Yeah, it's successful but not nearly as much as it's classic counterpart. Metroid Dread hit 3 million in sales while Prime Remastered barely hit 1 million.
Metroid Prime stories all take place within the main 2d metorid timeline. There have been some retcons with the relase of Prime Trilogy which changed some log text entries to be more consistent with what Prime 2 & 3 story. Honeslty i dont think the Prime games are spin offs. Would you consider Ocarina of Time and MM as spin off because they were 3d and the only Zelda games before that were 2d. Great that you guys know about Metroid, its Nintendo most slept on franchise. I really hope we get the last 2 prime games on switch to get more people to play them
I would consider 3D Zelda a spinoff, yes, even though it's part of the official timeline. The gameplay is so very different between the 2D games and the 3D games, they almost feel like completely different genres. The 2D games have more intricate items and puzzles (like say Oracle of Ages' Switch Hook or Minish Cap's Cane of Pacci), while the 3D games have more of a focus on combat than anything else. That alone makes the design feel very different. Doesn't mean they aren't good though, but it's easy to see why there're schisms in the playerbases as well. Those who prefer 2D Zelda like me, and those who prefer 3D Zelda, cause they're wholly different beasts.
It's a shame Titanfall basically turned into Apex. I got the first two Titanfall games and love them and still have copium that a third one will eventually come out once studios realize about battle royale burnout
Im surprised you made that entire section on call of duty without even doing research on it, it was a big mess internally, the team that made cod 4 wanted the modern warfare series to be their own separate from the call of duty brand

Another Day, Another great Rocket Sloth Video! 😊
Super Mario Kart originally was gonna be an F-Zero sequel
Yup it’s was originally multiplayer F-Zero.
As someone that never gave Titanfall a chance until #2 was in sale for $5, EA would be foolish to not make another one
I'd buy that on day one
You're kind of right with the Call of Duty. The change came with Activision's own research. People recognized the Call of Duty name. Modern Warfare lost something like 40% name recognition. I don't remember the exact number but it was huge. They didn't want to risk losing those potential sales, so the COD got added back in.
The prime games are canon to the main Metroid games (even the prime spinoff are canon)
The fact that talked about pso in this video makes me so happy
Did I see that snowman from that virtual boy game called jack brothers?
i thought Halo's downward spiral would be the death of this channel. But you keep gushing out interesting stuff! Glad to see you're staying afloat!
Im really liking this new content. Keep it up!
I remember playing a COD game that would give you what they called shell-shock when a grenade or tank shell exploded near you.
I think it may have been the first one (it was definitely on pc)
I loved drakengard 2 on PS2. I'm still waiting to get drakengard 3 on PS3 at some point but the games have become a bit more expensive than I'd like for old games but one of these days
I think Vice City and San Andreas aren't numbered because they take place in the past.
Ur explanation about Rayman rabbits is 100% why I ignored it. Felt it wasn't cool enough 😂😂
As a Forza Motorsport fan, I *hate* how much attention got shifted to Forza Horizon. You can't even buy Forza 7 anymore.
I.... absolutely.... HATE.... the Rabbids. Same as I hate the Minions and Olaf the Snowman.
Nier is such an amazing series with heartbreaking stories specially with brother nier and rose/zero from drakengard but i think its one of the greatest games with even more astonishing soundtrack
There’s so many stretches in this video
Simant slaps, needs a remake for sure. So many hours into thst thing even just the solo stuff.
I don't think CS and TF count as spinoffs because they're not in the same IP as the original
Titanfall is my second favorite SciFi shooter IP after Halo
EDIT : You need to finish NieR, the game starts at the end of your first run, I'm not exaggerating anyting here bro, trust me !
i used to love rayman and the raving rabbids when i was younger lmfao
If anyone doesn’t know, Titanfall 2 is being updated by an unknown person/group (multiplayer now works perfectly fine after the DDoS attacks 2 years ago) and Titanfall 2 is having an anniversary celebration this weekend. New game modes, new maps for frontier defense, and more. So if you haven’t played TF2 in a while, now’s the time. Bring some friends along too!
mario 64 was not bundled.. it was just one of 2 games you could get on release.
Another spin off. Super smash bros, the assist trophy character sukapon from a Japan exclusive super famicom game I can’t for the life of me is called but it has the same types of fighting style of special moves, push the other players off the platform and button combos in more of the same vein as smash then other games like street fighter
a full persona rocket sloth video would be great
8:43 bruh that's some serious praise. Yahtzee from zero punc loves persona too. I might have to give it a crack.
my friends convinced me to play persona
it was a good choice! very fun games. unironically has changed me as a person a bit
@@neko_cultist if you liked persona, check out smt. And since you like personas party members ( i hope) try digital devil saga. Its a great game thats more character driven, basically persona but better.
I remember on PSN. The game always said for example MikeOTR playing Modern Warfare 2
i LOVE Team Fortress 2, Quake, Halo, Unreal.
Really enjoy the videos, great topics!
Guys I Loved this video, I really appreciate your work to give us this list, you’re amazing 🔥❤
I saw Apex in the thumbnail and laughed, lemme see what I can learn from this and as I'm typing he's talking about Titanfall
17:24 i think that Metroid Prime inadvertently turned the 2d metroids into spin offs in a weird way
Hey you Pikachu leaves me with a sadness i havent recovered from. I really thought Pikachu hated me and thats why he refused to listen 😢
Wasn't the Gears of War Franchise a spin off of unreal tournament too
It was Infinity Ward that wanted to brand it solely as Modern Warfare 2, but Activision went above their heads and branded it as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Cos Infinity Ward didn’t want to be lumped up with Treyarch, they originally didn’t like the fact that Treyarch made the 3rd game as to them Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was known as Call of Duty 3 internally.
Persona only became popular during the waifu collecting era. Look at P1 and P2 duology.
Yeah.... its a shame to see, considering p2 had easily the best story in the persona series.
Dynasty warriors is a spin-off of itself, the first Dynasty warriors was a 1v1 fighting game but only released in Japan. That's why Dynasty warriors 2 in JP is Dynasty warriors 1 in the rest of the world.
So I have to wait for Apex to end before I can play Titanfall again…
I cant wait for my kids to never stand a chance against me in mario kart
Lol XD
People say the games are the things that sell the console, like both Switch and original Xbox had.
You should play persona 2 duology, and some of the other smt games
@@Noja2 yeah definently, persona 2 is and ep are fucking good. And nocturne oooo baby god is it fucking good.
@@christinablixthenningsson3529 have you played digital devil Saga? Sorry for my english btw
@@Noja2 yes i have
Wouldn’t League of Legends also be on here. Because it was a parody to DOTA and is sooo massive now?
More of the spiritual spinoff as they call it. It does have prominent devs from DOTA's long history.
Prime is a spin off.
@@deathtrooper2048I don’t think you understand what a spin-off is. Metroid Prime is a mainline Metroid game, it’s basically 3D Super Metroid in 1st person.
Metroid Prime is absolutely more popular, Dread sold well cause it came out at the right moment at the right time on the right console
I think modern warfare actually should count as a spinoff, because cod 3 connects to world at war, which connects to black ops. Modern warfare, since before the 2019 reboot, has always been pretty self contained.
Well Modern Warfare was called Call of Duty 4
And then it itself a sequel, so I think of it more of a sub series
Ain’t P5R just the same story with some new characters?
Just a note about Forza Horizon 5. If you look at the leaderboards, Forza Horizon 5 has over 32 million players now
the dude in the thumbnail sorta looks like Anton Chigurh from No Country For Old Men if he were older, nerdier and his hair were a bit shorter
err... why's Metroid Prime in this list at all? Yeah, it's successful but not nearly as much as it's classic counterpart. Metroid Dread hit 3 million in sales while Prime Remastered barely hit 1 million.
Remasters selling worse? Damn thats crazy, if it was prime 4 it would outsell dread easily
the Classical Team Fortesss is a little underrated TF2 is totally fun for me Counter Strike was okay.
RIP Mainline SMT
They made SMTV a few years back, apparently it was a hit, but personally I think the Persona series is more cohesive.
SMT5 is backk now
Damn the og halo 3 gamefuel is so nice
If you don't talk about puyo puyo being a spin-off of some sort of RPG I'm done
Unreal 1 and 2 are fantastic games
You should have mentioned the Portal games since they are a spinoff of Half Life.
It's a shame Titanfall basically turned into Apex. I got the first two Titanfall games and love them and still have copium that a third one will eventually come out once studios realize about battle royale burnout
Iirc, the whole Metroid Prime trilogy takes place between Metroid 1 and Metroid 2
Titanfall 3 we hope and pray ...
I had rabbids alive and kicking lol
Not including Skyrim is just a punch in the balls 😭😭😭
Im surprised you made that entire section on call of duty without even doing research on it, it was a big mess internally, the team that made cod 4 wanted the modern warfare series to be their own separate from the call of duty brand
I also do not care for the rabbids tbh
Most ppl i have talked to either dont or straigh up hate them
