- Coming with a new book tag, this time I'm doing the boujee booktuber tag aka how I spend my money on books!
abookolive video: • The Boujee Booktuber T...
-THE QUESTIONS-
1. What is your average monthly budget for books?
2. What's the most you've ever spent in a bookstore?
3. Are you willing to pay full price for a brand new release, or will you wait until you have a coupon or there's a sale?
4. Would you rather buy one new book or several less expensive used copies?
5. What do you think is a reasonable price for a new hardback book? A paperback? An eBook?
6. Is a signed book worth more to you? How about a first edition?
7. What is your most valuable book (sentimental or actual value)?
8. Will you pay more for a cover or edition you like better?
9. What physical characteristics does a good quality book have?
10. If you won the lottery, what bookish things would you do with the money?
BONUS: Give us an image (actual or mental) of your dream home library!

How BOUJEE are you with books?
Sooooo are you looking to adopt?
I don't dog ear books and I'm somewhat likeable!
I spend a crazy amount of money on books every month. Since I discovered Book Outlet almost a year ago what I have spent with them alone is close to 5 digits. That’s not counting Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, Half Price Books, etc. I only pay full price if it’s a book I HAVE to have. Like if it’s a favorite author, or a series I really love. I refuse to buy mass market paperbacks. I banished my husbands to a closet in our basement. I despise them. A signed book or first edition depends on the author. I’ve paid a few dollars more for a first edition or autographed edition from a favorite author. But I wouldn’t pay a lot more. Same with the cover question. I often order UK editions because the cover art is better.
Did you know that Kobo syncs automatically with your library through Overdrive? I'm sure your library has Overdrive, most do now I think.
I live in Finland and we have euros here. My budjet is not so high but maybe about 20-150 euros per month, depending on many things. I also like to buy used books and own certain books but also use a library.
In canada, you can get a Kobo ereader with overdrive to sync with your library (you can also use the overdrive app on your phone). In Quebec(not the city, the province), you can subscribe to Bibliotheque et Achives nationales du Québec for free if you're a resident and then borrow ebooks from either Pret numérique (in French), or banq.overdrive.com (in English). I've saved a lot of money since I've discovered that. I live in a small town, and my library has ZERO books in english, so before I knew that, I would buy all the english books that I wanted to read.
“Online it’s not real money.” I felt that. We all felt that.
"Online - it's not real money" I've never related as much to a sentence as I do to this one
YESSS! I have always said that when you buy a book it should automatically come with an ebook code. You paid for the book, and it encourages people to buy into whatever ereader platform. It would be amazing because I like to read while working out on the elliptical or treadmill, but it’s hard with physical copies, so I have to change what book I’m reading if I want to work out. It discourages me from working out too, if I’m really involved in the physical book I happen to be reading.
Seriously, every physical copy of a book should come with an ebook. Why is that not a thing?!
or an audiobook lol
Anyone who shops online for books, You should check out world of books, they ship internationally (free shipping in the uk) and I find they are often cheaper than book depository.
I love World of Books, they are also really good if you get a copy that's not up to standard. Really easy to deal with as well as great prices.
We have fixed bookprices in Germany (+Austria I think), so you can only get discounts on a book if you buy it in english (or another language), secondhand or the fixed price got cancelled for this particular book. 😅 so glad that I enjoy buying used books especially when you can see that they‘ve been loved. 💜
We have this in the Netherlands as well, one of the reasons why I read in English because it's only on the Dutch books :P an English book is normally about €10 cheaper than the Dutch translation.
Julia Stetter haha same
That’s so weird Because in Poland books in english are like twice as much
Kat Salwiak that’s so weird! Even if you order from foreign websites like Amazon Germany or Bookdepository? That’s were I get a lot of my English books.
Kat Salwiak I get a lot of my English books on my kindle, maybe that‘s an option?
Crazy how it‘s such a difference in some countries, books are cultural assets
“This is my happy mess.” 😂 honestly so relatable. My bookshelf looks rough and I don’t even care. I also don’t have enough books to make it look cute. Oops, haha.
4:15 "It's what's on the inside that matters" (in tiny voice) haha, loved that!😂 But it's true!
Hope you're going to change that thumbnail soon because... oouf!
I was a bit in a rush OK?!
You don't want to get on her bad side, now do you? She might start going over to your channel and pointing out some things....
Teresa Bruhv same person right?
Yes lol
maybe the snowball Em could do some voodoo if you continue with your "bad" comments ... hehehe
Whenever I'm in a reading slump. I watch your videos and it makes me excited to read again. ❤
Trueee! Ebooks should be waaay cheaper.
International books are very expensive here, so I usually buy the ebooks(I know, it’s not the same😢)
When I got my first Kindle (the keyboard version) ebooks were always around $5, and I 100% believe the ebook should be free with a hardcover/paperback since we've already paid for the content
What I really hate about ebooks is, as long as the books are only available as hardcover the ebook cost like 16 to 20 € in balance to the hardcover which cost 25 € and as soon the paperback released it will be at a lower price but not in a way where I think it’s fair.
The only difference between e-books and physical books is that e-books don't printning. They still have to have a cover and then there is the marketing like with any book. How cheap would you say is fair?
Painteyelash maybe fair is not the right word. But you don’t have cost of carry and don’t need employers who try to sell. And my mine issue is the change of the price when the paperback is available.
I feel like the ebooks should be wayyyy cheaper. They already have the book typed out on a computer before they print so you should save the cost of printing, ink, paper and everything that comes alone with that. Plus it doesn't have to be shipped anywhere. Plus it's just not the same as a physical book so it better cost a lot less if I'm going to consider buying it. I usually don't lol. And absolutely we should get an ebook with the purchase of a physical book! It's a file! Simple! Like they do with DVDs now, they usually come with digital copies.
I’ve never heard of this tag but I love the questions!
Omg I totally agree with you on the ebooks/audio books. It's so expensive!
Agree with you on the e-book situation. I just got a kobo for my birthday and I have been using Overdrive from my library, but I feel you on the having to wait for books-- sometimes I just want the book now, rather than a year from now. I have found on many occasions that the e-book is just as expensive as the regular book and it's frustrating.
Fun fact: I also remember the FolioJunior of Harry Potter and L'ecole de sorciers! I went to French Immersion and there was always a fight amongst classmates for the French HP books. :) :) NOSTALGIA!!!!
I'm so happy for you to have access into affordable books and library.
Omg, a reading vlog for Sanderson's Way of Kings!!! We need it! 😍
If you would like to invest in an e-reader, go with a Kobo. They use epub so it's perfect for library books, and some even sync directly to the library with overdrive (just not to the BANQ… which is stupid but you can still upload the book on the reader through your computer.
Kobo, the new Libra for sure, syncs with Overdrive so that can help! Also on Kobo they have a VIP program, 10$ a year and you get more superpoints (used to get free books) 10% off and random coupons for money off. I end up paying about 9$ after taxes for a book which i can stomach a bit more.
I agree that some ebooks are super expensive and it's crazy! I don't know how it looks in Canada (especially because you don't use Kindle), but I usually get my ebooks from Amazon and usually get them for no more than £3 (that's probably maximum I'm willing to spend on ebooks). Obviously often you won't get the new releases or books that are crazy popular, but I've managed to get some great ebooks that way!
I hate paying full price for a new release too, but i had to do it for my boy philip.
If someone needs the reminder, THE SECRET COMMONWEALTH IS OUT TODAY 💓
you are bekke to us emily thats why we love you so much! 💕
The price question is so hard because I buy most of my books at a half-priced used bookstore or at library cast-off sales so my "normal" price for a hardback is like $9 and when I see full price for a hardback I basically have a stroke because they are so expensive!
"Online, it's not real money." SAME girl, same. Also, yes to paperbacks!
Ah that’s such a shame about Kindle in Canada - in the UK the ebooks are usually a lot cheaper then the physical. Ordering secondhand books is such a good idea! Then you have the funds to read more defo something I am going to try more in the future Xxx
I so agree with you about physical book and ebook. When I buy big books (500+ pages) I'd love to have an ebook version so I don't break my back carrying the book everywhere. Also in France books are really expensive for some adult new books prices can rise up to 30 euros! Reading in English is cheaper for us. And yes many thanks to bookdepository! Great video again, love them all and for non English people you speak very well (even with the surgery)!
Floppy books!!! Hardcovers may have the more beautiful covers, but there's nothing like reading a big floppy book
...I am here for all the library sales.
I agree I always coveted Belle's library!!!
I'm in Canada as well and my Kobo does sync with my library which is super handy! It's through overdrive :D
When you flopped the big floppy book, my heart fluttered. It truly is happiness.
Dear Emily,
I love your videos a lot. Keep doing what ur dng.😘 Also please make a video recommending young adult books that r actually good. Since u spend so much time discussing what's wrong with them, i'd love to see if there are any that u actually like.
PLEASE read The way of Kings! You will not be disappointed!
Diana Leander yes!!!
I had those Harry Potter books too! I read 1-4 in French. Mine looks just as used as you!
i absolutely agree with what you said about ebooks, like paperbacks are cheaper than hardbacks because the production process is cheaper, audiobooks are expensive because the production is expensive, ebooks are literally free to produce except for the copyrights of the intelectual property?? should definitely come with physical copies, same as you can import music you get as a cd to your itunes
aaahh Belle is my favourite princess too! 💛
I love your humor 😁you have the best videos ever
I agree when you buy a physical you should get the ebook!! And that they shouldn't be same price!
oooh i should do that tag too, sometimes! because you mentioned pirating books - I've done that once because i wanted to continue reading storm of swords by george r r martin but i'd left my original copy at home in another country but had packed the following two books lmao
I read enooks mostly, and I never spend more than $2-3 on one... Unless, like you said, it's a book in a series that I love and dying to read the next one. And even then I won't spend more then $5-6. I love James Patterson's Women's Murder Club series, but the ebooks are $15, so I wait for a copy to be available at the library... Even if it takes months!
We have an insanely good library so I buy almost nothing. I haunt the website until a book is up (well before the publish date usually) and then I reserve it. I've been first for at least a dozen books so far and I always get them the day they come out. :-D I seriously hope we never move.
Watching your video, I was like: "Aaaaaah, I'm not alone!!"
I only buy my books new from the book depository because a. I have OCD and can't touch "old" books and b. most importantly, where I live they cost the same as new ones so why bother.
OMG very true. I'm fine with mass market even if it doesn't bring out the best feeling but with secondhand? ANXIETY!!!
For now I only buy books from local (english) online bookstore because I don't trust myself with cc or Jenius (a debit card company that can pay bookdepo). It makes me more considerate with my book buying choice. I'm happy for readers out there who has access to Half-Price Books or library with amazing collection, but I also grateful for still being able to afford books in a place where reading english books deemed "costly"
I am a rare bean. I read at least 4 books a month sometimes upwards of 10 to 12, however I spend 0.00 dollars on books. I get all of my books from my local library. Between ebooks, physical copies and audio books I always have something to read. My library always me to Suspend my holds so I "go shopping" Suspend the holds until I am next on the list and I am going to need a new book in the next 48 hrs. I can donate money to the library and ensure that all people get their hands on books
Book Outlet is amazing for cheaper new books!
Hey it's true that Kindle doesn't sync with libraries in Canada but Kobo does! :)
Hi Emily! We’re very similar on these things, ahah.
What lipstick are you wearing here? I love it
I don't feel bad about spending full price for a book at local bookstores; i think it's important to support them! I do feel guilty buying things full priced at chapters/indigo (or Barnes and Nobles if you're American) and try to avoid it.
Aww yess I have the exact same HP edition! 😍 And its really really used ans it shows, just as yours hahah
So far everyone I have watched do this get a little ranty over ebook prices and I agree! They should not be the same price as paperback etc.
I live in Canada too. I subscribe (for free) to bookbub where I get notifications when books for my kindle are on sale. Also Amazon has regular daily deals for e-books. I’ve bought quite a few popular titles for only a couple of bucks. My buying tastes are very similar to yours :)
Girl!!! One word, KOBO. Seriously, the prices are great. They have an app for your tablet so no need to buy a kobo e-reader...
You can curse me or thank me later.
PS: Love your channels. Oh... and you look great with your new jaw
Absolutely agree with you on the ebooks... and it's so sad. A lot more people would get them and support the authors if they were cheaper.
i want to say thank you for mentioning book depository, because i've been searching for the beautiful blue cover edition of a long way to a small angry planet for MONTHS and couldn't find it anywhere (i think because the US version is that ugly green print lol), and found it in two seconds for under $10 on there!! purchased it while watching this video hahaha
Em, in my eyes you still totally ARE Belle. 😊
Your bookish dream library is sth I can fully get behind. I watched Beauty and the Beast way too often not to. ♥️🤗
Thank you ♥️
I agree it's insane that ebooks are the same price or slightly cheaper than physical books :(
I love used books not just because they are cheaper but I like that my books have a “history”, especially classics lol.
The most I've ever spent in a bookstore/ online at once is like $55. I can't imagine going overboard on spending either. The library saves my hide alllll the time.
hardcover books are so expensive in Canada. I feel you here.
You should get one of the Kobo e-readers have Overdrive
Tu es surement au courant, mais la liseuse « kobo » fonctionne avec l’application « overdrive », qui est reliée (gratuitement!) a la BANQ et les autres bibliothèques québécoises ! C’est super facile ☺️
I had the same hp edition, it's bringing back memories ahaa
They were very well loved haha
Paperbacks are my favvveeee
live love the library and I don't mind used books especially if they're cheap!
Honestly when books are $30 or more I die a little inside
Girl, I feel you on the ebooks. You just have to download it, why do they cost like a physical copy?! That makes me so mad, too. That's why I alway wait for cyber monday xD
I always thought I was Belle. Before the film, I always had my dark hair half up and half down, loved to read, loved blue.
Even now, if I take a what Disney Princess are you, I get Belle.
Belle is my absolut favorit princess 👸🏻
My budget is under 50 pounds ( about 60 dollars) and normally I spend less because I already have over 60 books in my TBR pile. It's kinda my dream to indulge in a bookstore and buy a good 12 books at once hahaha
I’m the opposite, I’m more careful with buying online/using my card as I can see the money in my account but with physical money I go more crazy cause I don’t see it in my account so it basically ‘doesn’t exist’ 😅
This is me. Anytime I have cash I blow it so fast, cause it feels separate from my actual money. Most of my biggest bookstore purchases have been made with cash.
Alisha Reads & Rambles exactly me too!
In Denmark, a brand-new adult hardback is between 45 and 50§ !!! :-O
11:00 is my type of ASMR
In the Netherlands libraries offer very few books in English, so that's straight out the window. Also, not that much good second hand bookstores.. so.. yeah.
It's all new mass market paperbacks for me. Don't like hardcover or big books, don't give a fig about how my shelves look. I just want books 😅
I pretty much do not buy online, like to peruse the bookstore too much.
Also, no e-books. No audio-books. I want paper with words on it, books.
Would I pay extra for a signed copy - nope, if I didn't get it signed myself it has zero extra value for me.
Would I pay extra for a special edition - highly unlikely, unless I love the book(s) and the edition, it can't be found in a normal edition or perhaps after winning a lottery 😛
uff with ebooks I think it's a veeeeeeery deep and polemic topic, but as far as I can tell obviously I prefer physical copies and I also hate when the ebook is more expensive than the physical book (and I've never bought an ebook title ovel a physical copy, I prefer to wait or maybeI would listen it instead of buy a more expensive ebook) , nevertheless I like to support the authors and the publishers but I'm against the more expensive ebooks than physical copies for sure!
Do you live in Quebec? Which libraries do you go to I can't find any libraries around me that have more than like 100 English books 😭
$ 10 for one e-book? I got the 5 books in A Song of Ice and Fire for about $10 in the sale. It does feel really bad when the e-books are the same price as the paperback but the discounts are always higher on them at least from what I have experienced.
In Germany we have a fixed book pricing so no sales for us 😭😭😭
I am always so confused with the whole 'ebooks are just as expensive as physical books' because in MY case in Spain the ebooks are so much cheaper than the regular book. We're talking like the physical hardback is €17 and the ebook might be around €5.
You have probably said this before but if one was just starting to read Sanderson...what would you recommend them to read of his?
Paula A most people recommend the mistborn trilogy. Or One of the standalones
I prefer recommending either Warbreaker (PDF free on his website!) or Elantris because they're both standalones (for now lol) or the Mistborn trilogy!
Oh shit! 100$ a month on books.
My dream 📚😫 I know this is part of your job but I was honestly shocked lol
*less than!
Even with this job I rarely do that lol It's usually more like 20-40 😂
BookswithEmilyFox same here! One day we will get to the 100$ book budget and it will be magical😌
Yasss! We'll all get our Beauty and the Beast library haha
Audiobooks I can understand being pricy but as someone who can't even really read ebooks (I get massive headaches from staring at a screen even with low settings) they have no right being $10 when the physical is $20.
Do you have an idea of how many unread books u own?
I'm supposed to count for my next Q&A... I'm scared lol
I do dowload pirated ebooks online but only books I don't care enough to buy (and can't find at the library, I live in France and like reading books in English sooo) 🤐 #confession
As a librarian, nothing gets me table-flipping angry quite like big floppy books - especially big, floppy TEXTBOOKS. Those mfers will always melt open and fling themselves off shelves if they're not aggressively secured. 100% agree that ebooks should be cheaper though - $20-30 for a glorified PDF is highway robbery.
My library is having a flash sale and im to sick to go.
im so sorry girl
Oh no that's the worst!
Bribe someone to go for you and FaceTime! Hope you feel better soon.
Anybody else ever bought an old ass book and then had the spine crack in half, leaving you with a half of the book in each hand?
STOP IT just reading this broke my heart lol
I would live in a very very happy box outside on the street ! Ahahhahahah
I use AnyBooks for eBooks cause you can find literally anything for free. I use it mostly for books I know I don’t wanna pay for but I completely agree. eBooks are ridiculously overpriced and it’s shit.
Unpopular opinion I don't think e-books should be cheaper. We are paying for the authors creativity, the editors hours and marketing. While the process of physically creating the ebook doesn't seem as expensive as a physical book there are alot of things that go into creating ebooks and generally those employees are IT professionals which come with a higher salary.
I think a lot of people are resentful that they used to be cheaper (I remember them being more like 5-10$?) and now they’re pricier than paperbacks :/
@@BookswithEmilyFox I get that. I used to be one of those IT professionals that worked in ebook publishing. I think that most people will understand if the know what goes into creating a product. Security is difficult and expensive.
Before I even watch this I hope Emily 🦊 comments on the French origins of the word in question...
I wouldn't know... we don't say that in French lol
For anyone interested though, here we would say being "frais chié" which directly translates to "freshly pooped".
You're welcome.
BookswithEmilyFox 😂🤣😅 was thinking of bourgeoisie, but okay
Ah see I really don't know anything about it 😂
35$ for a new release??? That's insane, in europe they're usually 20€!
Heck the hardcover of The Way of King by Brandon Sanderson is currently 39$ on Amazon lol
I'm sure I can find it cheaper elsewhere but it gives you an idea!
Can’t believe how expensive books are for you! New paperbacks in the uk are normally £7.99, (less than 9€ / $13)
It really depends to be fair! The new Philip Pullman is currently out "on sale" for 17.99$ which isn't too bad for a new book.
@@BookswithEmilyFox in this case it's more expensive here: 19.95€ which is ironic lol
The official price is 29.99$ so I'm not how long the "sale" will last lol
The price of ebooks infuriates me 😑
100% agree about the price of eBooks. It blows my mind when they are selling eBooks for $15-$20 AUD.... A fair amount of the time the Paperback is the same price of CHEAPER?! How does that make any sense when it’s not a physical item they are selling. I understand that the author needs to make money for their creation but that should be a set amount and then the additional cost should depend on what is needed to distribute that book. An eBook, once created takes no extra cost to distribute and a Paperback takes extra because then need to physically create the book out of resources. So why are those two the same price most of the time?!?! This is a topic that infuriates me.
EMILY YOU ARE MY SPIRIT ANIMAL!!!!!
Amazon has a program called MatchBook where an author could make the ebook free or 99 cents if someone had already bought the print copy. Unfortunately, they're now cancelling that program. I thought it was such a great idea.
So basically you aren’t Boujee
Someone else commented I was since I've spend over 100$ at least once in one go so... who knows? lol
I don't think so compare to others!
