  • It's pretty clear my shelves are overflowing (reorganizing video coming and bookshelf tour!) but first I needed to make some space hence... UNHAUL! Unhauling books can be freeing so here are all the books I won't keep, either because I hated them or just because I think others would enjoy finding them at the next library sale!

I can't separate an author from their work. If something awful comes out about an author I'll be thinking about it every time I see their book and I can't immerse myself in it.

re. separating an author from their work- I can't, really. If I read a book and love it and then it turns out the author's a jerk, it doesn't taint my reading experience but I'm unlikely to buy more of their books because I don't wanna support that. If I hear about an author being a jerk before I read any of their books, I probably won't pick them up.

Buying from second hand bookshops and charity shops is a way around this if you really want to read a book but hate the author. Borrow from libraries as well! That way your money goes to a good place.
Also if the author is dead check to see where the money goes to.
I’ve come across this problem *twice* when I was halfway through a series before and it’s infuriating. You want to know what happens next but definitely don’t want to support the author.

    • @AwkardBookShenanigans

Yea same. Though, especially if the author is still alive and writing, then I don't wanna support them. If they're dead maybe it doesn't matter that much. But I'm just immediately turned off from even trying an authors books if I already know they're racist/homophobic etc.

Marion Zimmer Bradley is a tough one for me. I read Mists of Avalon before I knew anything about what she did to her children. And I love the book. So much. But I can’t look at it now without thinking about what she did. I’ll never buy a copy of her books again.
When an author is alive and they do something/believe in something I’m firmly against...I don’t want to support them. There are too many good books in this world. Life’s too short to make horrible people successful.

Krista Culbertson I'm exactly in the same boat. I found the book last year, had in on hold from my library, and in the meantime I found out about what she did to her children. It’s one of my favorite books. I’ve reread it 3 times in the last 15 years. It’s a masterpiece of feminist literature. I didn’t know about her history until today.

In response to separating the author form their work for me it is a case by case scenario. There is really a lot of nuance to be had in these issues and I will admit I would have a harder time dismissing an all time favorite author if they did something bad than I would with an author I've never read anything from. It also depends on how bad I perceive the allegations against them are, which is very subjective.
As an example I will mention Phillip Pullman who wrote His Dark Materials which is amazing. Lately I heard people accusing him of transphobia. I was honestly surprised because he just didn't seem like the kind of person who would do that but nevertheless I researched the issue. I found out he had made a comment that I didn't interpret as transphobic but that nevertheless was vague enough that I understood why someone else might make an argument for it being transphobic. As such I made the decision to continue reading his works because I still enjoyed him as an author.
As another example the author you mentioned Marion Zimmer Bradley who committed inarguably more terrible crimes, there is no way in hell I could ever read or support such an author's work. I would feel complicit in a sense.

Regarding separating an author from their work, if I find out something after I've read a book, I'll keep the book, but won't read anything else. Oftentimes, I've already stopped reading their work for other reasons. If I haven't read them yet, then I usually won't unless I already have the book.

  • @mopaflo

I am definitely a person who can't separate the artist from the art. I've had to let go some of my favorite books as well as a few fav authors bc I just can't seem to separate them and don't want to support them in anyway. I think the topic of separating the author from their work is usually oversimplified. Writing is never separate from an author. An author's experiences, world view, and even sometimes deepest feelings influence their writing. Even when it's fiction, it's still a glimpse into the author's mind. You might be able to block out things you don't like about an author so that you can still enjoy their work, but in all honesty you can never actually separate an author from their work.

I wish I was able to somehow get The Kept Woman. I love Karin Slaughter novels (and was very happy to discover her with Pretty Girls, it is not her best novel but certainly got me hooked).
As for separating the artist from his work, I actually try to do that since I believe the art should not be valued by the same criteria (that we value a human being) however I find it very hard to do. Luckily so far the writers whose work I enjoy seem to be nice people. However it is the film makers and actors I'm having trouble with. I used to love Woody Allen films, he was one of my all time favorite directors but now every time I wanted to watch a film of his, I find that I simply can't. But I'm trying to get over this since logically I think art should be separated from its maker.

If what I don't like is simply a difference in opinion, I'll still read and enjoy the book. But if the said author has murdered, or sexually abused someone there is no way I can mentally or emotionally support someone in that way no matter how good their book may be. Separating an author from their work: when it comes to child sexual abuse, it is so heinous that it is not even a question for me. I do not want to see those books, much less touch them. I feel sick, physically and emotionally.

Agreed. In these cases there really is no way I could continue to support that author.

I tend to disassociate books from their authors. Especially when i know nothing about the author other than their name and when i just want to read for the sake of it, not really critiquing the writing. However, if I happened to hear a bad price of news on a respected author of mine I would probably feel disappointed enough to stop reading their works. P.s I live watching your unhauls, can't wait for the reorganization.

I didn't know anything about Marion Zimmer Bradley but I read Mists of Avalon early this year and thought it was fine. It's nothing special enough to warrant reading if you're uncomfortable with the author!

There are many many authors out there with great books (or films, paintings, whatever) to find reasons to read books by terrible people. I used to try to separate them but it doesn't work for me.

I think with separating creators and work... it depends. There are some works that would still be very valuable even if it turned out the author was some horrible being. But like, if an author promoting really hateful philosophy, I would probably purposefully decide not to purchase/support their work.
An author that comes to mind for this kind of controversy for a "classic" is Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged), some people really disagree with Objectivism (which I think she supported) and so don't support the novel. But I don't know enough about the topic to know my own position.

I read the Mists of Avalon when they were published and were Bestsellers, and I knew nothing about the author. I'll take a look on what's about it, but the Avalon series was very good and Feminist, it's the Arthurs Saga from the POV of women and it's a pity it has gone down due to the author.

Re: separating the author from the works-yep. on the whole I find that if I enjoy an author’s work I don’t really care what they do in their life. Now there are exceptions to this: jk rowling who needs to stop; and a few other authors that how they behaved makes me adamant I will never read them...but for the most part if I like a book I don’t really care what they do outside of it.

I bought Mists of Avalon from a second hand sale purely because of ny interest in interpretations of Arthurian myth. I knew going into it that Zimmer was an awful woman so i chose to buy it that way so she/her estate could make no royalties off of my purchase. That really seems to be one of the only ways, apart from using a library, that you could read such a book
