Unfortunately i have to buy almost all my books new, because there are rather few used English books available in the Netherlands. Even when some shop sells them, it's usually a bunch of the same classics. Makes you feel even better when you do find those gems tho! Also basically whenever I go to the UK I bring an empty suitcase for all the used books I buy there. Still, I am incredibly jealous of the Canadian and American library sales and massive used book stores!

I have the same problem! Though there is this one secondhand books website called awesomebooks which ships to the Netherlands for not that much. It's mostly older books but they're so cheap, it's amazing

I’ve started only buying new books if 1. It’s my fave author or 2. I can’t find them at all in second hand stores/op shops or at the library and it’s been such a good decision tbh

I saw your edition of His Dark Materials and knew I HAD to leave a comment because I bought the same one a few years ago when I used to live in England. I first read this serie in french when I was 9/10 years old and fell madly in love with it. I knew I loved reading before that but Philip Pullman will always be the one who made me understand how much reading was important to me and my sanity. Anyway, I kept my old French books close to my heart and me and the three of them followed me almost everywhere until that day I saw this UK edition in a bookstore. I thought at first I didn't need it since I already owned the books and resisted the urge to buy it for weeks... months? But one day I stepped into my bookstore again and the book was gone (as they only had one on display). It almost literaly broke my heart and I actually cried on my way back home. A week after, the book was back on store and I didn't think twice before buying it. I never regretted it even though I still have to read it.
This was a huge comment but there's actually not a lot of French people who know or at least love this serie as much as I do and I was so excited to see someone, even on UA-cam, who shared my love for it. c:

I used to buy all my books new, but the last few years I've been reading 100+ books a year so buying everything is no longer an option. I do try to keep my new books to known, well loved authors or books I'm just really excited about/know I'll love. I do still impulse buy new books as well, but for the most part I try to get everything else used or from the library.

Supporting my authors.... well, my favourite ones anyway. a full 3rd of my books I've bought hardcover as a new release and I don't regret any of them. sometimes I may not like the content but I don't regret the purchase.
plus I take a tiny bit of pride in the fact that I own first edition, first print of some of my favourite books.... and wish I could own 1st ed/1st print of some others (this is the collector coming out)

I buy new books a lot but I think it ends up being half used books half new on my shelves in the end :) I almost always want to buy new books from authors that I really like on their release day or close to it, even though I (more often than not) don't end up reading them right away x) I've since been limited by the size of my bookshelves though so I don't think I'm going to buy a lot more books in the future until I'm done with the ones I have :p (except for series obviously, I need the next ones!)
A lot of the new books I buy do end up being worth it as I tend to buy the books I most think I'm going to like otherwise I prefer getting the audiobook or the ebook :) (I would get them from my library but I live in France so they only have the most popular books in English and even when they do buy new releases, it takes them months to add them to the catalogue, which makes me crazy) But overall I'm not mad that some books I buy new don't end up being great, I just unhaul them and bring them to a free library in my city in the hope that they will find a better home like a lot of books I found there did 😊
Also, I feel like Booktube has made me want to buy new books more because I'm aware of so many new releases all the time, I'm just an extremely curious person idk and I have hardly ever felt regret in buying a book? So much of my money goes into books but I love it

I love the idea of this video. I only but new books 1 - if I know that others in my family will read them 2 - if I know I will love them and read them again 3 - if I can't find them used. Otherwise I but used or ebook or library. I know I'm lucky I can do that, but we are planning to move and now I realize just how many books I own. 😱

I don't recall ever buying a bran new book for myself. Only as gifts to others. I grew up fairly poor so used books were the ones i could afford. Luckily there are tons of used books stores where i live. Nowdays i read mostly digital, but theres something really fun about browsing shelves on those stores trying to come up with a hidden gem, so i still do it from time to time.

Last book I bought brand new and even pre-ordered, was Artemis. Can youf eel the regret coming off me in waves??
More often than not I buy 2nd hand just because they're so expensive and I read so much. Even series I *love*, I'll probably buy the epub the day of release and then wait for the paperback release - annoyingly, the more popular a series gets, the more often it become that it is released in stupidly expensive hardback first and then paperback later (6-12 months) or the US cover comes out before the UK and with the exception of one series, the US covers are generally less attractive to me, so I wait for the cover I want.

When I was in my 20s ( many many moons ago 😅😂) I used to buy all of my books new. Now that I'm older, and more patient I get my books almost exclusively from the library. I'm lucky enough that where I live multiple cities let you have library cards if you live in the state (Colorado) so I get ebooks and just plan ahead as much as possible. Occasionally I just can't wait then I try to buy an ebook but I live in a 300 sq ft camper because we travel all year

I buy my books used almost all the time. When I buy a brand new book it’s because it’s the continuation of a series and I can’t wait to read it! For example : The song of ice and fire series and the Magnus Chase series! Great video! Super interresting 👍🏻

  • @SewFun

I hate reading a series before it's all out because I just can't stand cliffhangers. But I do want to support the authors, so I try to buy books as they come out for authors that have a track record or have been recommended by people I trust (Emily Fox being one of them!). Sometimes I'm disappointed, but I know how little the average non block buster author makes and I'm willing to take the hit because I can. I'm not the "Book Police" and I think it's important for people to live within their means, so I understand why others may not be able to or may not wish to.

When I really got into reading in English few years ago (I speak Spanish) I started buying only new books, so I was poor :'v but recently I started buying from people on twitter, facebook groups, abebooks, and a second hand store in San Diego, Bookoff. After I read a book, I resell it or trade it if I don't think I'll reread it. Used books are the best ♥ I still buy brand new books sometimes, for signings.

I too am a second hand book lover. However there are a few exceptions I purchased Haruki Murakami novels as soon as they came out in hardcover (no regrets there, I love his bibliograpjy without exception. I have also purchased a Jane Austen all books hardcover. And realised later on that it was a mistake, not because I don't like the novels, read them all, love them all, but it is too heavy and hard to read because of that. I should have gotten the novels separately.
Being an Audible member helped me out with some of the novels though such as anything by Joe Abercrombie (grimdark fantasy), anything by Naomi Novik, and most things by Stephen King and Leigh Bardugo, I just preorder them and listen right away.

I was so disappointed with The Cursed Child as well! I went out and pre-ordered it before it came out in Greece and I was like "it's going to get better" the whole time to convince myself to keep reading, luckily it was a quick read and it'll just stay on the self forever with the rest of the series just because it belongs to the universe.

Great video! I don't buy books brand new often because the hardbacks are just a little to expensive right after publication. But a recent book that I ordered brand new was Ninth House. I just finished reading it and sadly it wasn't worth it to buy it full price. Not only that but I pre-ordered a special edition that was even more expensive. In my country there is novsuch thing as library sales and only very few used bookstores, so if I want to buy used, I have to buy from a person on the internet. But yeah, i do that sometimes. I buy up to 5 new books a year. The latest one is Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn 1st book. And some of it in the summer, but man do things move slow there, so I kinda stopped for awhile and did not pick up again, but I definitely will. I bought Ninth House brand new and read it right away and gave it 5 stars so I would say it was worth it. This is surprising though because I hardly ever buy new books (love my library), but also because I prefer to own/read paperbacks (especially the floppy kind). The book is really pretty though so I'm happy the money was well spent because it will be living on my shelf. The worst is when I buy a new hardcover for some reason and don't end up loving it enough to keep so it's like donating that money when I give the book away when I could've just waited and used the library.

I do unfortunately have to buy my books new. I live in a pretty rural part of Canada and the nearest library to me is quite small. There is just no used bookstore near me and the closest new bookstore is in a town with an hour and a half drive away, so the vast majority of my books needs to mailed to me. That also means that I get a lot of audiobooks and ebooks if I can't wait to start a new book.

If you ever go to a bigger city, look into buying a library card. You can then use Overdrive or Libby to read ebook or audiobooks!

I almost never buy new books, because I'm a student and don't have a lot of money, so I only buy second hand. The only books I bought new are of course the Harry Potter books (same edition as yours), the Lord of the rings books and The perks of being a wallflower. I don't regret it! They look amazing.

I bought the special UK edition of Muse of Nightmares but I couldn’t even get a 100 pages into it. Since the hardcovers are out of print and the UK editions for these books are highly coveted, I’m gonna probably sell my copy for a good price 😂

Buying Sic of Crows and Crooked Kingdom was definitely worth it, even though now I‘d rather have it as a hardcover 🙈 Because of that I bought Children of Blood and Bone as a hardcover and it definitely wasn‘t worth its money. I am now reading The City of Brass and once again I‘m regretting not buying it as a hardcover 😂

I used to buy books new but then I realised it was a waste of money. In fact, I realised buying books was a waste of money for me when I have a library and already had so many books on my shelf that I haven’t gotten to. So now I use my library or buy from second hand shops, unless I’m really anticipating a book then I’ll wait a few months until the price drops anyway lol.

Emily, what was the book you recommended when you mentioned you were going to get a Recursion by Blake Crouch, but instead got something else. Did you say Ark? 😞 i couldn’t understand. Sorry!

I'm so bad about buying books I want brand new. It's awful, I know, but I'm just one of those people. HOWEVER, I did pick up the Shades of Magic Trilogy, Vicious, the Six of Crows duology, the first and third books from the Stormlight Archive and the Remnant Chronicles all courtesy of Book Outlet, so at least there's that?

Unpopular opinion - I didn't like Dark Matter. I really liked the premise, but all the characters fell flat for me and all apart from the MC were instantly forgettable. I also felt like it was written more like a movie than a novel - though I would like to see it as a movie, which I think it's being made into. I did get it used though so there is that!

I wish I could buy more books. But like the book from book depository is usually around 10 Euros my monthly income after I deduct the rent and utilities is 300 Euros. So... I still bought 4 books yesterday because I got so desperate but it really sucks to live in Ukraine. I wish I could buy them used or take from the library but there are no new (or English) books in libraries and to buy used ones are even more expensive than to buy new ones from book depository. So I either don't read or sometimes pirate the ebooks, don't like wither option. =(
