Honestly, the mental gymnastics we do to convince ourselves "I swear I'm gonna read these 850 books of my TBR" are beyond hilarious. No you won't, honey 🙄😂

The Bear and the Nightingale is 100% fantasy. People say the first half of the book is kinda slow for them but then love the second half. Idk, I love that series

💓One of my top 5 favorite books of all time! And I think Vasya might be the best female character I encountered in a fantasy book.

Yes, I was 10 minutes away from abandoning Bear and Nightingale - it was coming up for dinner time so I gave it that long to improve. It improved suddenly and I loved the final half. So I understand why some can't get through it. Half a book to get good is too long.

A Neil Gaiman book I will always recommend would be Coraline ☺ it's not magical realism. It's spooky with some supernatural elements. I think you'd like that one.

Exactly what I thought of! It's also a short book, I love the writing style, and the vibes seem to be something Emily would enjoy :3 imo it's a nice choice for autumn ^___^ it was one of those books I wish I had kept to myself, but I returned it for the sake of a friendship hahah

I don’t like Neil Gaiman either. I was so “meh” towards Ocean at the end of the Lane. However, I did enjoy The Graveyard Book, so maybe you can give it a try and see what you think?

I can understand how daunting and torturing Shakespeare might seem to read, I've read a couple and I definitely think it's about finding the one you click with since there are so many! 😊 My favourite is Much Ado About Nothing: quite funny and with great characters, especially Beatrice. She's queen. So I really recommend that one if you ever change your mind and feel for some Shakespeare. 😇 Otherwise there's an awesome movie adaptation from 2012 by Joss Whedon I really recommend! 🙂💕

I didn't care for The Ocean at the End of the Lane either, and I read Good Omens so long ago that I don't really remember it, but I don't think I had strong feelings about it, BUT, Stardust is one of my favorite books. It's not magical realism, it's totally fantasy, and it uses a lot of fantasy tropes in dark, serious ways. I'd suggest at least trying Stardust before giving up on Gaiman.

I really enjoy Agatha Christie's books, I used to read my mom's collection when I started reading "bigger" books at 11 or 12 years old. Maybe its nostalgia, maybe the Brazilian translation was really good, maybe its just my style hahah. But they're definitely a "vacation" read for me. Like stuff to read to kill time.
About John Green - I think they're good books for young readers, I know I loved who are you Alaska when I first read it... but then I read turtles all the way down when I was older and thought the story was really predictable and the characters weren't very likeable.
Anyway I rarely comment on UA-cam, but I'm always waiting for your recommendations, we have a very similar taste in reading!

About John Green: when he writes about mental health, the book is really good. If you decide to give it a shot, try reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson and Turtles All The Way Down. They are quick reads, not perfect but the mental health issues are very well done.

I can 100% recommend the Graveyard Books by Neil Gaiman! Especially the art styles are so, so beautiful and it's a very curious, kinda sad story, but also comforting? I am also not so interested in his other books. I liked Good Omens well enough, but mostly for the christian mythology references and the humour.

Joining in with other comments here: "The Bear and the Nightingale" and the entire "Winternight Trilogy" is straight up fantasy. It's based on Russian folklore and some historical events, but it's DEFINITELY fantasy and not magical realism. That being said, the beginning is on a slower side of things, so I can understand the confusion. I did LOVE the trilogy though, and I think once you get past the first third of the first book you would be into it. Based on your taste, I would be surprised if you didn't like this series ))

I agree with your opinions on Neil Gaiman. I tried reading Stardust last year and I really just couldn’t get into it. I don’t know if it was his style or just the plot, it didn’t grab me at all. Although I just finished Good Omens a few weeks ago and that was good. I currently have Neverwhere and Ocean at the end of the lane on my TBR. Hopefully those can keep my interest. I think those are the last two I’ll read by him if not.

The bear and the nightingale is suchhh a slow book. It's all about atmosphere so you have to be someone who really likes that style in order to like that book. It wasn't my favorite because the plot is basically non-existent until the last 20 pages, but I do really like atmosphere so I'm currently continuing the series. It's very similar for Neil Gaiman, his book are all atmosphere which I personally really enjoy but it's not for everyone! I just finished The Graveyard Book and loved it. It might work better for you because it's much more fantasy in a middle grade setting rather than magical realism. It's super whimsical and sweet.

I think the Bear and the Nightingale is totally worth it (even though it was a 3 star for me). It does have its faults, pacing being the biggest once in my opinion but it was Arden's debut so I was willing to overlook that. The trilogy in itself as well as the second and third books are amazing. I wouldn't say they're magical realism, I would describe them as historical fantasy.

I am a big fan of Agatha Christie and her books are my go-to as a 'palette cleanser' between big books but I admit that Murder on the Orient Express was not one of my favourites. I’m exactly the same with Neil Gaiman. I tried the Ocean at the End of the Lane and American Gods and DNF’d both of them. I just couldn’t get into them.
What I do with my TBR is that I go onto goodreads every once in a while and just look through my entire tbr-shelf. Then I delete every book I’m no longer 100% interested in. Makes it easier to focus on the books I really do wanna read lol

Don't give up on Shakespeare! His plays are so much better than you'd think plus they are really short (not like Victor not-being-able-to-focus-on-the-main-story Hugo).
Also the famous books of John Green like paper towns and tfios are in my opinion not his best works! I would recommend Looking for Alaska it's honestly a pretty good book that I think you'd like.
I didn't expect you giving up on some of my faves would actually hurt my heart but it definitely does 😂

I understand your feelings toward Neil Gaiman. I have a few problems with his novels as well. But I still love him because of his Sandman series. I don't remember if you read graphic novels or comics, but if you do you should give Sandman a chance. The first two issues were a 2-3 star read for me but the rest of the series was beyond amazing. Cleaning out your GoodReads TBR once in a while is a good thing. I do it too. Recently I've done it with my audiobook app as well. I stopped buying big quantities of books, so I don't buy a lot of them without reading them. I was already conscious of which book I bought, but now even more so.
The Bear and the Nightingale is a fantasy but just very environmental. I also didn't really care for it. It's ok and the writing is fine, just not my thing. I probably will not go for another John Green, just like you and more of the books on your TBR I probably won't read either. I've already a bunch of Dutch classics and lit-fic I've wanted to read for years and haven't gotten to yet because new, shiny things nicely override the old.
I tried some Neil Gaiman and the writing isn't my gem either, but I did really enjoy Neverwhere. The writing isn't as flowery and not what you encounter in books like Fairydust. Norse Mythology was so boring, I'd recommend reading the Edda (official myths) instead. I'll probably try the sequel to Neverwhere, but I'm no longer really interested in other books of Gaiman.

Also as a quick help for reading shakespeare. don't actually read it. it's intended to be performed, not read, so just look up a random performance of the play you're wanting to read on youtube and watch that and follow along in the book, occassionally pausing to read scenes they skipped over - it's very efficient bc you get a sense of the staging (since shakespeare used 0 stage directions), cadence and everything, and it's also easier to follow along because visual context helps you understand words/sentences you don't know =) [also while I'm here, let me recommend to you my favorite billy shakes plays: Love's Labour's lost, Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, and [if you're wanting a slasher with cannibalism, infanticide, rape etc.: Titus Andronicus]

On Shakespeare, the only things I recommend are Much Ado About Nothing, the movie, with Emma Thompson. It is *so good*.
And Romeo and Juliet with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio. But only if you liked the style of Moulin Rouge with Nicole Kidman, that kind of extreme acid trip.
We were reading Othello in class when we had a string of suicides so that was a super dark time. And I can’t tell you if the movie is any better. MacBeth was a gory read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Ok. Yes. At least watch the movies if you can ☺️❤️

If you feel like giving Agatha Christie another chance, maybe Death on the Nile would be a good one.
I recently removed Star Wars: Lando's Luck from my TBR. It sounds like a fine middle grade adventure book, but I need a little more from my Star Wars books to make it worth the time.

Circe, Nevernight, and The Diviners. Sorry, you fans of those books, but just not my books.
Circe has too little conflict for my liking
Nevernight, I can't stand the writing style
The Diviners: I don't like the flip-flopping of Evie's character and the writing just didn't invoke the intended effect on me.

Origin, by Dan Brown, Howl's Moving Castle, by Diana Wynne Jones, and Warbreaker, by Brandon Sanderson. I may give them another chance in the future, but right now I've got lots of books waiting, so they're not a priority.

Honestly if you feel you must consume Shakespeare watch one of the movies. It's so much easier to see why people love it. His work wasn't meant to be read it was meant to be watched and it's very very obvious if you have to sit in a room and read a play.

I disagree. Each movie shows the vision of the director, but we should be free to have our own vision.

I loved Neverwhere. Tho I listened to the James McAvoy radio version. I do have a bias towards him. The Hugh Jackman version of Les Miserable is worth a watch. The lovely thin about Shakespeare is if you watch a play or movie (Hamlet, Romeo & Juliette, etc) you have basically read his work. David Tennant and Catherine Tate did a brilliant Much Ado About Nothing (you can find it on UA-cam). As far as John Green, A Fault in our Stars is amazing. Some of his other stuff is so so but I enjoyed that one. -- Mary Higgins Clark is the name you are thinking of. Try the mini series Catch 22. That way you can watch the first episode and see if it's your style.

Let Me Lie is one of my favorite books, and I say that as someone who has no interest in her other books lol so I don't know how it stacks up against everything after. It is about a mom, but it doesn't feel like a domestic thriller to me. I also had the same problem with Autonomous, I have no idea what I didn't like about it but I only got 20 pages in before I just gave up for good.

I also stopped forcing myself to read classics. Most of the time I don't enjoy myself and sometimes I feel like you need someone who talks you through the book so you get everything right. Also feel you on the John Green thing. Loved his books as a teenager but I just can't relate to them anymore and I have no desire to pick up one of his more recent books. And I have to admit to myself that I probably will never read the millennium trilogy.

OMG So happy to know I’m not the only one who feel that way about the Bear and The Nightingale!!! Just couldn’t stand the story & had to DNF when I was more than half way thru it! Life’s too short for something I don’t like >_

I found Paper Towns very boring, but the other John Greens are so good. Very very quick reads. The only ones of his I haven’t gotten to are the Alaska one and the Katherine’s one.
You’re thinking of Agatha Christie, not Mary Higgins Clark. I haven’t read her either, but I did love the recent movie so I plan to try her at some point. I believe they’re super short quick books so I’d say it’s worth a try. She’s the queen of smart mysteries.
I read the abridged version of Les Mis in college and adored it. I’d encourage you to try an abridged version. It’s still rather long, but not as long as the full version and more page-turner-y.

Neverwhere is the only Gaiman book I've really enjoyed, it's one of all time my favorites. (Although I read it ten years ago, so I'd be interested to re-read it now) Because I loved it so much, I tried and wanted to love everything else by him, but in the end--I didn't care for much else. The concept of American Gods was so interesting to me, but I only got half way thought and I was so sad I didn't love it.

Reading Shakespeare is torture but watching Shakespeare is great. I love romeo + Juliet with Leo di Caprio, and I've seen one or two shows in theatre which were great. But I hated my life when I had to read Hamlet or The Tempest. (I actually fell asleep while reading the Tempest and it's supposed to be one of his funnier/profound plays).

I think it's a pity you won't read Les Miserables. I love that story. I don't particularly like the grown-up Cosette or Marius, but I am incredibly fond of Jean Valjean and there are a couple of other very complex and interesting characters in there. Don't watch any of the movies, but give the book a chance! It may be a brick, but it's not hard to read and I think it would be great when it's cold outside and you're in bed, wrapped up in a warm blanket.
About Shakespeare: I haven't read ALL his plays, but I have read about ten of them or so. I feel some of them are usually misunderstood. Therefore I don't trust any directors who might have staged them and I prefer reading them myself. There are certain aspects that I dislike, but all in all... + other fragments are amazing! Mindblowing wit and wisdom. And some bitter humour, to add some flavour to the mix. I will admit they are not very easy to read, which explains the "torture", but I'm Romanian and I can read them and appreciate them, so why shouldn't some native English speakers be able to? If it is their failure that scares you, let me reassure you that those plays are still interesting, catchy, and memorable.

I’ve read a bunch of John Green and tried to like them but they’re all sad and angsty.
I’d go for Stardust by Neil Gaiman. It’s definitely the most accessible. I did like Neverwhere but it’s super weird and not linear.
