Barry did my training in the 695A I purchased last year as well.... Commanders all the way!! Best twin out there. The 695A now joins my 500S in the hangar....
Before I left for college I used to work as a line tech for Wisconsin Aviation RYV. I’m pretty sure I’ve fueled your plane and also 93GD. Great to see your plane is getting back to flying and thank you for being a great customer.
Hi Mark, I have owned a 500B Aero Commander for 23 years, and also have many many hours across the entire range of turbines in those years. Just wanted to mention, before you scared too many people, that the toe-controlled steering is a pure delight. Not only is it not dangerous, and won't result in any excursions, it's precise and effortless. You could learn to steer it in 5 minutes. The trick? Take off your shoes and taxi around in your stocking feet!
John, after posting the video, I thought I may have overstated that point, especially since I never tried it. Thanks for the correction. My Cirrus steering is all about differential breaking and it's easy to get used to it. Different from the Commander, but a similar thought process. Love the trick you mentioned. I have seen new Cirrus pilots ride the brakes during the winter because they can't get a feel for the pedals with their heavy shoes on.
My Dad was a draftsman at Aero Commander in Bethany OK (okc), he worked from 1963 until he died in 1972. In 66 he took me to the plant where a Jet Commander that Arthur Godfrey had flown around the world setting a record. I may have been the only young man who knew what a Wemac was. Good times
I probably need to annotate the gauges. The GoPro uses GPS signals, so it's actually showing ground speed and not indicated air speed. We did not get anywhere near VNE, let alone VNO. I should also confirm my color coding is right. I knew someone would comment on that. You win the prize!!!
@@pfflying6275 Yay, I want prizes. Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I wondered about that because the scale and markings change a few times during the clip. Nevertheless, I couldn’t help my stomach from tightening as I watched the ASI rapidly climbing to red line. I think annotating would be beneficial whenever appearing to do something hazardous.
@@dryreed excellent point. In the Cirrus, I can use the data from the G1000, so it will accurately reflect KIAS. But for non G1000 birds, I will stick with the GoPro and annotate it as you suggest. Thanks.
@@pfflying6275 Particularly (now that I take a second look) because the gauge shows color markings for several V speeds which are nonsensical unless the meter is reading KIAS. It should not show color bands and should optionally be labeled as “knots groundspeed.”
@@dryreed It's an app. You have to enter the V speeds, (VNE, VSO, VNO, etc.). I never thought about being able to change the verbiage. I'll try that. You'll notice at the end, I removed all color coding. That's probably easiest. Anyway, great discussion. Thanks.
Just ran across the channel, been trying to get a plane of my own but things have gotten too expensive and im completely out of the cockpit these days and missing it. Picked a horrible time to retire from the military, world being upside down and cost through the roof.
Yes, it's crazy expensive and addictive. Where are you based? Maybe you can start hanging around a flying club or something and get a ride from time to time. I hope you can get back in the air soon. And if you happen to be local to Chicago, let me know and we'll get you out to the airport.
I was trying things like that but either I haven’t met the right people yet or they’re just in to that here. MDQ is my closest airport here in Huntsville Alabama. I was going to build an rv-10 but it’s cheaper to buy certified now than build one. Crazy how fast that changed from just a few years ago.
What is less desirable for the 690 are those Garrett straight thru engines with the elevated noise level. I rather lose some efficiency and have a PT-6. I wondered how it affect cabin noise level, but I sure notice those engines on the ground. You cannot hear anything with one of them running within a hundred ft or so from you.

Thanks for your comments Micah.
Love the Commander. Thanks for sharing your first experience in one! 🛩️🤩
My pleasure. Thanks for commenting.

Not my intent, but happy to rekindle great memories of your dad. Wonderful comment, thank you.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Keep ‘em coming!
Fantastic! Great instrument panel.
Agreed. Amazing how the panel makes everything feel like new.
Twin turbine, cabin class - what's not to like? You were sure heading quickly towards Vne. Glad you made it home! 😱9m57s

It is not noisy in the cabin.
Barry seal did a falling leaf in one of these and landed it on a runway in Colombia.
Haha 😄 I was gonna mention something similar. He had it tanked out as well , moving weight for the Columbians .
nope. Never happened.
Very Similar to ATR/Dash/Xian MA60/600 Turboprop sound it....
