Flying the Piaggio at 41,000 Feet (Max Altitude!)

- After many requests, I’m back with more Piaggio P180 content! In this episode, my brother and I fly from Jackson Hole, WY (KJAC) to our home base of San Jose, CA (KSJC). We get to hear all about Chris’ incredible accomplishments over the past few years, discuss our arrival procedure into San Jose, but most importantly, push the Piaggio to its MAX and climb to the service ceiling of 41,000’. Not a normal place to find a turboprop, but the Piaggio can handle it no problem! I hope you enjoy this episode, and if you do, please subscribe as I have a lot of great footage in the pipeline.

FL410 in a turboprop is wild
Right!?
absolute unit
Only because it’s never really been seen before. In reality, altitude isn’t really an issue for turboprops. The only reason they haven’t gone that high before is because there was never really a need for it as turboprops usually serve a special purpose. Additionally, creating turboprops that are efficient at that altitude takes a little more engineering and quality and that just adds cost.
The real issue with Turboprops is speed. Cruising at FL410 isn’t really doing you much if your max airspeed is 260 knots.

That’s so cool the faa asking you for footage. For anyone that doesn’t know, on the faa UA-cam channel they are building up a file of videos flying in and out of as many airports as they can cover. To be a part of that is awesome!
They also goovde the videos with fined tooth comb to make sure regs are followed, and they follow up with pilots when they find things. Don't ever volunteer to incriminate yourself with the goverment becouse they will play it iff nicely and than destroy you.

Thank you! Keep up the hard work
@@alienware609 his commentary on the coms is so helpful
Hi Owen I’m glad you are enjoying N9851 i was the pilot / agent that facilitated the purchase of it in Germany for the current owners . I enjoyed flying it in Europe it’s a great performer fly safe !
Why is he flying without the current owners?
He takes the plane wherever they need it. The owners do not always have the time to get the plane back to home base for whatever reason so he shuttles the plane Someone may have rented it for a one way to Jackson hole or something
Nice video Owen. After 4000+ hours in the P180 I still enjoy the incredible performance level of this airplane. I have lost count of how many times ATC asked “what kind of jet are you flying, guys?”
give us some videos of the Piaggio please, I love it
That Bird is gorgeous. Thanks for taking us along Owen 🤙
Man, that was crazy! 41,000 feet in a turbo prop! Simply amazing. What a unique and amazing aircraft.
Dude thanks so much for bringing Chris along and getting him talking about his experience. That is the sort of stuff that young budding pilots need to hear. Congrats to Chris on his success. Thanks for sharing.
This shows what hard work and going above and beyond will get you. I'm so sick of hearing people say you can't get ahead in America. Well this young man just told you how he did it at 22. Very Nice too hear...
It never ceases to amaze me how quickly time flies in your videos. You definitely put a smile on that controller face in Jackson hole. Pretty sure you won't be waiting in line for takeoff clearance, lol
Lots of great information from your copilot. It's definitely a young man's world in the aviation industry. 22 years old with 1200 hours steering a G4, and you're the ripe old age of 25 years old with a zillion hours flying a G4 and the Italian stallion.
Appears to me the aviation industry is in good hands with dedicated Hot young pilots like you guys.
Always a pleasure flying along with you in the jump seat. Take care, see you on the next one.
The Piaggio's unique "wail" is unmistakable as a charter service flies over my house every day. I can hear the newer EVO coming from miles away & its sound is distinctive with the twin turboprops in pusher configuration. What a phenomenal performer on 100 gallons total or less of jet A per hour giving near 400 knots. The only twin engine VLJ that compares with fuel burn is the Eclipse 500/550 albeit its slower top end & much smaller capacity at 5 place vs the Piaggio's 8 -10. Getting a ride in a Piaggio is on my bucket list before I lose more sight when it won't matter.
Started flying single pilot part 91 in the P-180 in early 2002. Back then a small crowd would always gather upon shutdown. I believe we were the 36th registered Piaggio in the US. Flew it until 2015, and what I miss most, in order were. . . how quiet the cockpit was (perhaps the quietest in the industry with the super-sloped windscreen, and the slight prop “buzz” way far aft), and how fun the takeoffs and landings felt. Factoid. . . the main wing has the same square foot wing area as a Cessna 172, go figure! Thanks for the great video!
Buttery smooth landing at SJC, Owen. As Max would say "you greased it". The Piaggio is a beautiful aircraft with amazing capabilities. And it was great to see Chris again and hear his story about climbing the aviation ladder. You two must have great parents who have brought you both up right! Kudos for a great vid. -- Randy
What a smart young man. Listening to him describe how he started on the tarmac ramps as a kid and he had the wear withal to shake every hand he could making alliances before even starting his training. This is what I’m trying to teach my kids today. One teenager who’s bussing tables and has aspirations of being a Chef I told him the same thing. Wash every dish to the best of your ability, be happy to do it, ask for more, and shake and thank every hand you can. Good things will happen for kids that do this
coudnt have said it better
Thanks for mentioning the need for supplemental O2 and demonstrating the quick-don mask. At 410, you only have, at most 15 or 20 seconds, nothing to fool around with. I see a number of UA-cam pilots who go up to the high 30's or even above without even mentioning the mask. Good on You.
At that height, at least one of them should have the mask on. Some airlines have rules saying if one pilot leave the front office, the other must be on oxygen.
@@tonylam9548 The USAF has similar rules. I caught a hop from Yokota to McGuire on a KC-10 once and I was invited to the flight deck for a look-around and a chat. While I was there we were cleared from flight level 330 to 390. The copilot who was the PF handed over to the AC for a few minutes while he donned and tested his mask, then took control back, The pilot explained that above FL350, one of them must always be on O2, Watching guys fly single pilot at 410 or even higher while unmasked makes me nervous. Wearing a mask is a real PITA but it could save your life.
@@davestarr7112 They should have same rules, it is the same human pilots.
That controller with the shortcut was the coolest ever. Also 410, holy cow. Great job.
Smooth switch of audio to include cabin. It's the little touches.
Thanks Owen for another sweet trip in the Turboprop Piaggio . Great to hear that your friend getting a great start in his Flying too.
Thanks and that’s my brother!
@@FlyWithOwen Even Better Great for you both. Happy way to make a living. I Flew in the 1970 in lots of older Cessna 152's and Piper archers. just for fun . in South Florida and Fla Keys. Long before small portable Video equipment and Fast Turbos
Owen I enjoy the way you and Chris give great advice to aviation enthusiasts. Your positive attitude and encouragement go a long way, no surprise you are both successful.
Thank you for the nice words!
Love the Piaggio! So many opportunities for young pilots these days, almost makes me wish I was young again!
Thank you!
I saw a Piaggio fly into my Western PA local small airport. My fiancé and I ran out of the house with no socks on, hopped in the car to see it take off. The sound of these aircraft is wild!
I keep hearing one around Latrobe. Very distinctive sound.
I have two to three daily noisy flights at 3 000ft rocketing above my house, she just pissed me off 😤 Beautiful aircraft in the air though 😉
@@p.c.9714 wait until someone flies past with an AN-12... 4 engine, Russian (actually Ukrainian nowadays) design from a time when noise pollution was not a thing.
Happened to me: heard a rather noisy airplane. Started looking around what makes that noise... didn't see anything. Went on FR24 to find out that an AN-12 had just flown past... at FL240... redefines noisy. Well, not really. Long ago, I had the opportunity to watch a flyby of Concorde. ;-)
@@realulli Another crazy experience is to have a B-1 fly low overhead. The scale does not make sense. The shape is fighter-like, but it's almost as long as a B-52. The sound of four GE F101's in afterburner is nuts.
@@realulli Actually Stalin successor Khrushchev (ukraine nationality) ordered Antonov company to move from Russia to Ukraine , also gave Krimea to the Ukraine back in 1954 or something
What a video. PACKED: Professional, personal and performance.
Thanks, Owen . . I always enjoy "riding along" in the Piaggio . . a very cool airplane. I also enjoyed getting caught up with Chris's accomplishments, too - he's really working his way to the top.
Thank you very much for watching
I'm a student pilot and your videos are one of the key things that keep me motivated, so thank you. The P180 is something I would love to have the chance to fly some day. What an incredible machine
Piaggio my fav plane in the world, love that you get to fly it!
Awesome vids, love the pilot/tower talk and the visiting with friends at cruise - keep 'em comin Brother!
CitationMax is the best and most thorough young pilot i have ever seen.
FL410 and a butter landing. Another great episode!
Enjoyed that immensely. Inspiring career build for 22 year old. Forwarded to my grandson and son-in-law to watch.
Another great ride along. Looking forward to your upcoming videos. I really love the P180!
Thanks! More to come!
Great content Owen. Love how you interview other pilots you're flying with and provide teaching moments in IFR approaches, etc. Thanks for posting!
Insane service ceiling on that aircraft. That's about the top for most airliners as well!
I love watching guys who do detailed PreFlight briefings. I always pick up a new tip
Thanks Owen 👍 love your content, mate.
Watching your content from down under South Australia.
Love this plane, your content and choice of music. Safe flying Owen.
Owen as always, your demeanor and professionalism far exceed your years! Thanks for taking the Piaggio to the limits and that landing was so smooooth! Can't wait to see what's next! Cool to meet your friend Chris...only the best for you guys!
Thank you very much! And Chris is my brother!

*Hey Owen, looking forward to following your Vegas flight later today. Wish you bon voyage and safe arrival. Cheers!*
Cool to see Chris again and learn all the things he has accomplished in this short amount of time! Way to go Chris! 😊
P-180 is a wonderful aircraft. It’s immensely capable.
Always great to see you in the Piaggio, she’s a rocket ship all the way up to FL410! Great video Owen, nice to see Chris too and hearing about his journey. Thanks for taking me along.
Butter landing. Great job flying the piaggio.
Thanks!
17:05. I don't know whether FL410 for a turboprop is "unreal", but some wartime Spitfires (notably the MkVII) could fly at 42,000 feet, with a pressurised cabin. Performance chart indicated at 44,000 feet, max speed is 376mph, 22.2 mins to height and still climbing at 300ft/min. (the highest altitude achieved by a Griffon-powered Supermarine Spitfire Mk XIX was 51,550 feet (15,710 meters) on a high altitude test flight).
Now that is an aircraft. The Piaggio is a pile of junk in comparison
Seriously, you're comparing a max weight of 7,900 lb Spitfire Mk VII with one pilot to a Piaggio with a max weight of 12,100 lbs and up to 2 pilots and 6 passengers. Wow, talk about night and day difference.
If I had this knowledge when I was a kid I'd be certified Intergalactic by now
Not a pilot, don't really follow flying, don't even fly commercial much - but I love your video's!!!! Something about being in the pilot's seat and conducting a flight up close is amazing. Thanks Owen, for giving us another slice of the flying pie! 😀😀😎
Thanks for having Chris on that was inspiring
Sweet aircraft! I also have a Piaggio but in Primavera (Red). It is stunning...and handles like nothing I've ever experienced. 125cc so not all that fast, but what a joy.
Great video and advice! It's encouraging to me to see someone so young go so far. Often we fail in life just from lack of trying. Keep up the great work!
You’re kill’n it, Chris! Great job and excellent attitude going after the work.
Y'all are a dynamic team! Really enjoy your content!
Thank you!
That controller reading your clearance has the most clear pronunciations ive ever heard on a radio.
41,000 in a turboprop is very impressive! 😌 I really enjoy your videos, and I look forward to more uploads! 🙌🏾✈️
Wow! The most beautiful aircraft in the best place on earth JAC. Can’t get any better than that! Lucky !👍🏽
Thx Owen and Chris...Great Piaggo performance.
Controllers voice and speech pattern at Jackson Hole sounds like AWOS 😂
Had no clue that was your brother until I read another comment. Very impressive what you both have accomplished so far!
Worked on Avanti’s as a tech for years. Have a love hate relationship with the thing but that sound once power is advanced for takeoff, amazing!
14:00 - Great info you recounted about life/work experience. Key takeaway I heard is to fully commit towards whichever role you happen to be in - servicing lavs; pilot; whatever. The thru-line of all of it comes back to your character/integrity (which is what they hired).
I always enjoy the time you share with us in this awesome Piaggio, Owen.
Outstanding video, I liked how you explained the maps and the meaning behind the symbols, and impressed on the 41K' on a turbo prop
What a great video, enjoyed every minute of it. Amazing airplane, your very lucky.
The two of you make a great team. Killer flight! Thanks for the ride.

Great stuff as always Owen!
I live near Hartsfield so I'm pretty accustomed to hearing all sorts of air traffic. Recently a plane flew over my house that sounded so distinct I had to stop what I was doing and pull up flight radar. Lo and behold it was a Piaggio!!!🤩

Enjoy watching you fly! Especially in the Piaggio.. it's such a cool aircraft.
VERY informative episode on the varieties of aviation career experience. And, never knew those small propellers could grab enough air to maintain flight at FL-410!
Great ride I enjoyed every moment and the airplane is nice bro. thanks for allowing us to tag alone like always and good luck to your co-pilot . peace.
