  • Why mix greens using yellow and black? These combinations make excellent greens for landscape painting. They are very natural and can easily be used in landscapes.
I used a variety of yellow oil paints that I have collected over the years and mixed them with Ivory Black and Lamp Black. I also used a cheap Titanium White oil paint to make lighter versions of the greens that also made lovely, natural greys.
I hope you find this 'How to mix greens using yellow and black' video useful. Please leave any questions in the 'Comments' section and I will do my best to answer them.
What is your favourite green from the colour mixing chart? Please let me know. All the best - Andrew

Hi Andrew ... Wow! This was a great exercise ... I never thought that two different blacks could make such colorful greens ... Now I can use black instead of blue ... Inspired to start a color chart with the yellows I have and I'm going to try using Payne's grey also ...

Thank you Nancy - I think Paynes Grey and yellow will be beautiful together

Really really like this one! How fascinating. I have got to get a hang of this color mixing chart stuff. Somehow haven’t been able to grasp a good method for my understanding. Makes sense during the video. Then when I sit down…blank. So think I’ll do this w my watercolors and see what I come up with. Thanks for this video!!

Thank you. I usually mix with a brush when I’m painting. The palette knife is perfect for mixing exercises though as it’s easier to clean between mixes than a brush 👍🏻

Mix,mix, mix! I like the mixes with Aureolin and MH Lemon Yellow and Naples Yellow those could be great for Seascapes or Winterscapes or distant Haze. I've also found that Nickel Azo Yellow mixes beautiful Greens, the same with Transp. Yellow Oxide. But anyway...great Demo👍

Thanks Andrew, really interesting seeing all those beautiful greens/greys "happen" ☺️ I have found Lamp Black and Art Spectrum Lemon Yellow useful to get the olivey greens which are found here in NZ. I couldn't believe my eyes the first time I saw the stunning blue/greens in late Spring in England. Amazing! Our greens are great too though 😀 Thank you again and all the best 👍

Hello Andrew, thank you for this demonstration. I'm relatively new to painting and I don't think of making greens with black. From now on I will do it because it gives beautiful results. Good week.

So this is super interesting as (at least to me) quite a few of the mixes aren’t at all intuitive…like my 2 favorites with MH lemon yellow and especially WN Naples Yellow. All of these greens are considerably more sophisticated than the tube greens one tinkers with by adding oranges and purples. Yellow/black might be easier for me than yellow/blue because it seems easier to start dark and lighten as you go.
Great video! I was hoping someday you’d do one on mixing greens. Your’s are always so lovely and interesting in your landscapes. Q: are we going to see more black on your palette for your landscapes?
For Twitter folks, Andrew’s post today (14 Feb 23) has a great still of the chart you can study.

Hi Andrew. Great segment regarding greens. I will make a similar chart. Very helpful. Please could you do a segment on using mediums to mix oils. I am just getting started with oils from acrylics and don’t know what to use for mixing paint to make more fluid to paint. I am hearing Galkyd but say it’s very toxic. Also difference between mineral turpentine and turpentine or white spirit. Which linseed oil or walnut oil. Should I use stand oil? This is really holding me back from starting out with oils. Please help if you can. No pressure.

      Hi Yolanda
I will do a video on that subject. That’s a great idea
If I were you I’d just use the paint neat from the tube to start with. There is already linseed oil mixed in. I’ll try and do a video asap that might help 👍🏻

Surprised by the intensity of the Lamp Black - wondering whether your Naples Yellow was the Hue colour, or the genuine article: but whatever the answer to that might be, most impressed by your range of greens with nary a blue in sight.

I use a glass palette for mixing on - or sometimes a ceramic palette which is white. I like the smooth surface and it's easy to clean
