Demos make all the difference in the world as part of the learning process. I can learn theory all day long but when I SEE it being done then learning becomes even more enhanced.
I agree with the longer demos at least once a month - they are quite helpful. I often think that the 6-7 minute videos are a little too short - they seem more of introductions to topics. (I didn't want to scroll all the way down to the end to type this comment.) OH! Now I see I could have made my comment at the beginning, but I don't know where it would end up in the listing of comments.
Hi Donald, thanks on your feedback on the length. It's true 6-8 minutes means crafting something pretty tightly on topic and letting all kinds of related ideas hung. I suppose until another later one. At the same time I hardly ever have time to watch something a good deal longer. What's that line about public speaking, close while they still want more. Not sure. All the best.
Love your videos and the fact you display the ref photo and explain the colors being mixed to achieve end results, in addition to the technique used while painting. These videos are at the top of the ones most helpful. You stick to the point and don’t stray from the subject matter. Most helpful demonstrations! Thank you!
I thought the demo was extremely informative - I struggled with greens until I watched the demo - it is amazing how the greens became more real and inviting 👍
Demos are always nice but it's quite likely way more work for you. Thank you for posting for free for all of us who want to learn but not necessarily can afford classes.👌❤️
Yes, a longer demo is always appreciated! Thanks so much for this, Ian. I thought the color wheel explanation was a great reminder for me when mixing colors.
I get so much from the demo and I like the way you provide a running commentary, especially when things don;t go quite the way you intended. Very useful.
I loved how you showed all the different greens, but Kate is right: one on clouds/sky's and even water, waves, sea I would love to see.Thank you Ian for showing these wonderfull demo's
What a gift your free instructional videos are for many of us. Would love to watch some over and over but actually find it challenging just to keep up your impressive weekly publishing schedule.
This Is wonderful, Ian. Artists are mainly right brained, as you know, and most of us learn by watching something being done in order to learn. My school days were a mess as I couldn't memorize anything and when History came around, I would be busy setting a scene with everything that was said and so basically, learned nothing!! I couldn't absorb the common word, I had to SEE IN MY MIND what the History teacher was talking about. I was in tears in every class as the teacher would get so far ahead of me that I couldn't follow him.. Since my time (the 60's in high school), they have discovered that everyone does not learn the same and I hope that has helped people like me who learn by watching how it's done and not by listening to how it's done. That is how I learned how to use a computer...I had someone come in and show me what could be done on a computer and then I just dove right into it and mastered it! So Kudos to you for this, and I hope you do many, many more demonstrations!! THANK YOU!!!
Hi Ian , The long format really works for me. I particularly like the way you laid out the overall strategies of color mixing before going into the details. It would be nice to you can teach another one like this for yellow/orange and brown family. Thank you so much. I have learned a lot from you. Anita
I watched it three times in a row--so all that great info will sink in! It simplifies my process and makes sense. Please continue with at least one full demo a month; thank you soooo much!
Yes to long demos and also for the short version before, one to have a general idea and the other going deep. These videos are so well done and helpful, thank you very much.
Yes, the long format video is a great idea. Thank you. Working from a “puddle” is now part of my process; it makes my compositions so much more consistent. Looking forward to next Tuesday.
The demonstration was well done. I would really appreciate the long version once a month. I especially appreciate the 🎨 demonstration before the painting. Thank you.
Such a great job explaining your intentions. Really helpful for those trying to progress on their art journey. Thank you for all your wonderful videos. So inspiring, instructive, and practical! And yes, personally I love the longer demos 👍
I agree, the longer demo's give a more complete picture, excuse the pun. Watching your colour mixing complete with your voice over narrative, is so helpful. I really enjoy and benefit from your demo's. Thank you.
I really loved your comments on controlling the edges subservient to the overall goal of the composition. I think that is so often overlooked when you really need a chorus of techniques harmonizing towards one goal. Color, texture, shape and composition all singing together. Thanks for this great demonstration! This is one I’ll watch multiple times! Keep it up! Great work.
I was enthralled with your way of mixing greens! I need to watch this over several times, hope I can save this! I noticed the composition , vertical , horizontal and diagonal , is Always on the right side of the canvas. Do yo , or can you put the vertical on the left, etc.? I don't see why not!
According to Stefan Baumann, in western cultures, because we write from left to right, our eyes are comfortable going into the painting from the left and then rest on the right, other cultures such as Arabic who write from right to left have the opposite degree of comfort. It’s a natural progression from cultural training.
Well, in next week's video the main center of interest is way on the left. Just to make the point, that I think it just depends on my reference material.
I noticed that because I’m left handed I have a tendency to put my focal point on the right hand side of my compositions. I have to be very careful because I also want to do the same with how the eye will enter a canvas. Thank you for doing this demo on greens. I was stuck with too few greens in my current painting.
I think I’m on the right track. This video confirms my paint mixing is okay. Sometimes my paint appears “muddy” but abstracted, that’s how it really looks as tertiaries. And then the fresh greens work even better. Thanks for this video!
The long form is actually my favorite, so many people go to UA-cam for bite size bits, but with painting all my favorite teachers have long form stuff I enjoy more. So thank you and please add more long form 🙂
Long form demos monthly would be a fantastic idea, and you needn't worry about them being too long. I enjoy longer videos from time to time, and it seems most people watching tutorial videos feel the same. Thanks.
I agree. They are great and hearing the process as you go talking about the shape of the tree, the placement of the shape above it being incorrect, the reason for everything you are doing, and the compositional piece at the end. Truly educational.
That was brilliant, but particularly because you add so much understanding with your fluent commentary. Also well edited for time so that it stays interesting all the way through. Thank you so much. Please keep the demos coming
Thank you Ian… I’m a watercolourist but am incorporating acrylics into my studio time. Your demos and your talks are propelling me. I am even doing acrylics with my plein air group with confidence and not too shabby success! Thank you.
This is another fabulous demo! A friend sent me a link to one of your demos and I have been hooked, ever since. I am trying to catch up, not wanting to miss a single episode! You could say that I am "hooked": rod, line & sinker! LOL I have been trying for years to paint faster,...more effectively. Though I love oil painting, the process just seemed so long and tedious but your method seems so much more direct & beautiful. By the way, I love your bright colours! I learned oil painting from an old master who was 93 yrs old when she started teaching me, but she was "frustrated by her slow output" (an amazing- one 18" x 24" per week) and stiff style. I really like the way you explain, clearly & simply, throughout the videos even while painting! and you post your reference images in the frame, as well as showing us your palette! To me, it is as though you are showing us a glimpse into your painting soul! Thank you for sharing! You share so well (in quality and content)!
Merci
I love this video. 2/16/23. Looking for more longer videos since this one was filmed and not seeing any 25 minutes videos are more. I have subscribed and just love your videos love love love
I HAVE JUST WATCED THIS FOR THE SECOND TIME. YOUR INFORMATION WHILE YOU ARE PAINTING IS MORE VALUABLE TO THOSE OF US WHO ARE LEARNING THAN YOU KNOW. PLEASE CONTINUE THE LONGER VIDEOS. THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR AMAZING TALENT AND KNOWLEDGE.
Ian, these long instruction films are worth their weight in gold. Please, we need lots and lots. Went straight to the shop and bought chrome oxide green and cadmium orange and am training every day with scenery around the village to get to grips with the greens and how to combine them into an interesting structure that make sence on the picture plane (first all I saw was just GREEN and a trillion leaves and grasses - my head spinning ;b). But we're learning, we all do. Thanks, Ian, for your didactic skills, patience and insightful sharing to us all!!!
Love the idea of a demo once a month. But please don’t forget to focus on teaching composition, because you are the only teacher I follow who explains it so clearly. Thanks for all you do !
Oh yes please, Ian, to more of these longer videos. Once a month is good too so we can let things sink in. I liked how you built towards it and then brought it all back in together for the demo.
Thank you for showing me how to mix greens, I can see where I need to make some changes. I do like the longer videos. I do also find the short ones beneficial to watch. Mixing colors is where I struggle.
Recently I received your book Mastering composition I am young hobbyist painter . When I started reading the book I realized ..you are a philosopher of painting...I recommend your book to everyone..this is very good book for painting it teaches you about the essentials..i respect your deep knowledge of painting❤❤
I think labeling your lessons in a precise way, just like an SEO, would be really helpful for finding those lessons, in other words, use all the keywords that someone will use to find the video in the search will help you categorize them and will help the viewers finding them more easily. Your content is invaluable! ❤
I would love a long demo once a month! Thank you very much for all the details and explanations. I do learn a lot and appreciate very much how generous you share your experience.
I used this to create a painting. And I cannot tell you how much more I love my greens now. Stunning. Thank you. More long demos please (in case you are still looking at your comments - I see this video is from some time ago).
I was fascinated with how you mixed colours to create so many versions of green. Although I rarely use oil paints I think it's very useful for many other mediums. The hour demo gives time to absorb the process. Thanks very much.
Riveting and ideally exactly what I,"we", need from an excellent master painter, Mr Ian Roberts, these continuous painting demos which enables us ro achieve the best results in painting each time we sit down to work at our easels. Thou art a blessed man, Mr Roberts. God bless you
I have watched this video twice so far and each time I see something different. The longer videos give more time to digest what it is happening and why. Personalty I lean much more from the longer videos.

I'm painting in acrylic but I love the way you show details of whatever it is you're subject is. Love the tuesday emails. That GREEN demo was excellent. Thanks
I really enjoy and benefit from most of your tutorials, but this is definitely a cut above the rest. Your previous videos often require a certain amount of interpolation, you lay down some stepping stones and we find our way across. But this was like being carried across on your back - no risk of getting lost or stumbling, because you are there every step of the way. PLEASE make more like this. Thank you!
Hi Terry, that is a good analogy. I think in the shorter videos it is just the idea of presenting one idea. And afterward I am always thinking of other things I could have said. Thanks for the feedback.
I think that “long demos” are not good, they are FANTÁSTIC!!! Thank you so much!
OK Roberto, fantastic is good. Thanks for letting me know.
This is so great for those of us who need instruction , but unable to participate in in-person classes.
Mr Roberts if i can ask you how do u attach your canvas to the easel board?

Thanks so much for your appreciation. Means a lot Jola.
I would like to see a long demo once a month. I find it so fascinating to watch you do it. Very informative. Thank you very much
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes, a longer demo is always appreciated! Thanks so much for this, Ian. I thought the color wheel explanation was a great reminder for me when mixing colors.
Glad you enjoyed you enjoyed the longer video Mary. All the very best to you.

Hi Karen, thanks for telling me. Glad you are finding them useful.
Action speaks louder than words , More demos please , Love your teaching style Thanks Ian.
Yes to the Long form demos.... thank you for sharing your talent.
I will watch everything you do, too! So glad to have found you!
Thanks Mary. You are great!
Love this demo! I would like to see something similar on sky’s/clouds.
Thanks Kate. Will do one on clouds. Be a few weeks.
I loved how you showed all the different greens, but Kate is right: one on clouds/sky's and even water, waves, sea I would love to see.Thank you Ian for showing these wonderfull demo's
@@IanRobertsMasteringComposition 👏👏👏
Yes, a long demo is a great idea. Thank you for your time in making these.
Thank you!
I too love the longer demos. It gives me more detailed information which is super helpful!
Thank you!
Oh, my gosh! An excellent tutorial! Demonstrating while explaining is so helpful. Thank you Ian.
I agree. I've learned so much about mixing color simply by watching!
Long demos are vital. The opportunity to see the process is so helpful as I learn. Thank you for what you are doing! Please keep doing it!!
I concur that the longer demo is very helpful and watching the process of color mixing helps get us out of the "fearful" closet! Great teaching!
You are such a talented teacher… your demonstrations only enhance that ability. Demonstrations EVERY week would be ideal!
Delighted you are enjoying the videos. Best wishes
Mastering composition is my go to reference book, I’m really appreciating your videos both short and long. This video was so helpful Thank you Ian👍🏼
Thanks Norm.
It's just a wonderful time, a quality time with mr. Roberts, think you alot!!!!!❤
What a gift your free instructional videos are for many of us. Would love to watch some over and over but actually find it challenging just to keep up your impressive weekly publishing schedule.
Long demo once a month. YES please. 25:29
Ian, I've enjoyed watching your long demos. I learned a lot from you. Hope you'll produce more long demos. Thank you so much!
This Is wonderful, Ian. Artists are mainly right brained, as you know, and most of us learn by watching something being done in order to learn. It is so true how the school system back then just catered to such a single dimension of learning. Glad you are enjoying the demos. Best wishes.
I will definitely be watching your long-form demos, repeatedly, and taking notes.
Thank you.
Longer demos are great!! You add more tips with more time teaching. Thank you so much!
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
This was so helpful, not only for the mixing of greens but the relaxed process. Thank you!
That's great Sheryl. Thanks for telling me.
I like the idea of a once a month demo it helps clarity a lot of things
Delighted you are enjoying the videos George. Best wishes
Hi Ian ,
The long format really works for me. I particularly like the way you laid out the overall strategies of color mixing before going into the details. It would be nice to you can teach another one like this for yellow/orange and brown family. Thank you so much. I have learned a lot from you.
Anita
Glad you liked it and that is a good suggestion for the browns. I'll have to find an image that works for that. Thank you.
Yes, we haven't seen a new full demo for a long time, please at least once a month to light up in the winter south world with your more demos!😃
I'm so glad it was helpful.
I watched it three times in a row--so all that great info will sink in! It simplifies my process and makes sense. Please continue with at least one full demo a month; thank you soooo much!
Thanks for the feedback Joyce. Best wishes.
A long form demo once a month is perfect!
Yes to long demos and also for the short version before, one to have a general idea and the other going deep. These videos are so well done and helpful, thank you very much.
Thank you for the feedback.
WHY was I not taught this is art school?! Thank you so much. You are a great teacher.
I’d love to see longer demos. I found your channel a few weeks ago and have been enjoying your video instruction and learning a lot. Thank you!
I'm learning more from this than from years of browsing other lessons 😁👍
Yes, the long format video is a great idea. Thank you. Working from a “puddle” is now part of my process; it makes my compositions so much more consistent. Looking forward to next Tuesday.
That's great Sue. Thanks for the feedback.
Yes, the puddle makes so much sense. My problem is never knowing how much paint to start with and never wanting to put enough for fear of wasting it.☺
1 long demo a month would be great. Thank you.
The demonstration was well done. I would really appreciate the long version once a month. I especially appreciate the 🎨 demonstration before the painting. Thank you.
Thanks Colette.
Yes -please more long demos. You are helpful and not pretentious.
Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.
I would like to see more demos, particularly on color mixing, although this is not good for my budget.
Thanks Janene.
I just discovered you ... I wish I had discovered you a couple of years ago when I started painting! Yes please, more long demos!!!
Keep it up! Great work.
Thanks so much Danny and I really need to do another one on edges.
Yes a long demo once a month would be much appreciated
I was enthralled with your way of mixing greens! I need to watch this over several times, hope I can save this! I noticed the composition , vertical , horizontal and diagonal , is Always on the right side of the canvas. Do yo , or can you put the vertical on the left, etc.? I don't see why not!

It’s a natural progression from cultural training.
If you watch last week, he showed how he came to that layout.
Edward Potthast 1859-1927 did many paintings with his vertical on the left hand side and was very successful with that composition.
Enjoyed the video, I just wonder how often you change brushes to keep from getting too muddy.
I clean them a lot.
The long form is actually my favorite, so many people go to UA-cam for bite size bits, but with painting all my favorite teachers have long form stuff I enjoy more.
So thank you and please add more long form 🙂
Thanks for the feedback
Long form demos monthly would be a fantastic idea, and you needn't worry about them being too long. I enjoy longer videos from time to time, and it seems most people watching tutorial videos feel the same. Thanks.
Appreciate your feedback Michael. All the best.
I agree. They are great and hearing the process as you go talking about the shape of the tree, the placement of the shape above it being incorrect, the reason for everything you are doing, and the compositional piece at the end. Truly educational.
Delighted that you found it helpful.
Yes longer demos are a good idea. You explain things so good. Thank you😊
I'm glad you enjoy them.
Excellent discussion on greens! Would love to see more of these long videos.
Love watching you mix allthose greens and not contaminate each pilelike I do!
That was brilliant, but particularly because you add so much understanding with your fluent commentary. Also well edited for time so that it stays interesting all the way through. Thank you so much. Please keep the demos coming
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you Ian… I’m a watercolourist but am incorporating acrylics into my studio time. Your demos and your talks are propelling me. I am even doing acrylics with my plein air group with confidence and not too shabby success! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Yes please on long-form demos!! Thank you for all you do!!
I love the long demos--I find greens challenging so your video really made color clearer. Thank you.
This is another fabulous demo! A friend sent me a link to one of your demos and I have been hooked, ever since. I am trying to catch up, not wanting to miss a single episode! You could say that I am "hooked": rod, line & sinker! LOL
I have been trying for years to paint faster,...more effectively.

I am so enthralled , I forget to breathe! Thanks again. I do like the long demo.
Wonderful! Thanks for letting me know Dee.
I love this video. 2/16/23. Looking for more longer videos since this one was filmed and not seeing any 25 minutes videos are more.

You are so welcome Linda.
I agree, long demos are brilliant and once a month would be fantastic. Thank you Ian!
Finally someone who has taken out the guesswork of the different greens. You have given us recipes! The components are starting the connect.
Hi Arleen, that makes me happy to hear it. Components starting to connect.
You’re teaching is so uncomplicated really appreciate you’re skill and the way you share it ❤️
I'm glad you found it helpful

Oh yes please, Ian, to more of these longer videos. Once a month is good too so we can let things sink in. I liked how you built towards it and then brought it all back in together for the demo.
Thanks for the feedback Caroline. I appreciate it.
Thank you for teaching me the construction of different greens. Love your demonstration. Thank you!
This study/demo was very helpful. I would enjoy a monthly demonstration-your offering to do so is very generous.
thanks so much. Glad you enjoy it
Thank you for showing me how to mix greens, I can see where I need to make some changes. I do like the longer videos. I do also find the short ones beneficial to watch. Mixing colors is where I struggle.
Yes! Absolutely! one long video a month would be fantastic!....thanks for sharing your process .
Thanks Bob.
Yes, please do the once a month demos. Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Yes please Ian, I think a long demo monthly would be great! Thank you!
I like longer demo's. But not over 40 minutes.
Thanks Ian.
A longer demo of actual painting is very helpful

How very kind of you, a philosopher of painting.
I'm a watercolorist who is exploring the use of gouache so I'm learning that oil techniques appear to apply to gouache. Helpful. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful MIke.

Great to see this one again…I learn (or have reinforced) something from each of these videos. Thanks Ian … and Robin too!

This is the best video I’ve seen in a long time. Worth watching again and again. Thank you
Yes, a demo once a month will be great!!. Thank you. I do learn a lot from your videos. 😊
Like the long demos. The greens are so hard to mix, you make it look so easy! This is excellent video. Would like to see more like this.
I'm painting in acrylic but I love the way you show details of whatever it is you're subject is. Love the tuesday emails. That GREEN demo was excellent. Thanks
I think the long demo is helpful. There is so much versatility with the greens you painted. Thank you.
thanks for letting me know Judy.
