They finished the slide, but didn’t get that star. When they fell off the mushroom with that star, the game thinks they died so it wants to bring them back to the cage. The star on the mushroom was still collected, so it counted it. Does this make sense?

Wait huh is this a massive coincidence or something? For those who don’t know, exactly 6 years before this record was set to the day, Super Mario 63 had a 100% record in 1:01:41 by Sekanor which is what got me to run it in the first place, so seeing things some full picture is really nice
It is, but it's not faster RTA because there's a ton of coins that only appear when selecting later stars. If you check the BOB 100 in the run, you see they used Yoshi + egg combos with a koopa, and a Giant Mushroom, none of them are here during the race.
There were a LOT of mistakes and issues in that run. Deaths, star switches not being pressed despite being on the thing for over a second… it could definitely stand to be improved.
We use something called race file which is a save file where you just watch the intro cutscene, save and quit, which is basically just an untouched save file except that the intro has been watched so that we don't have to rewatch it on every attempt. The time added is the length of the intro basically

Nice run I just saw this while browsing UA-cam is this still world record? Or the title outdated I assume you would change it if it was but either way if it is or not, good run, I am surprised how many mistakes there are in this for a world record tho it's definitely interesting

The only way that you would ever start with a character other than Yoshi is if someone had already unlocked Mario after collecting eight stars, saved and quit as Mario, let you play on that save, and then you got a few stars before switching back to Yoshi. From a fresh save, you start as Yoshi, collect eight stars, and then unlock Mario.
