What's sad, I think, is abney actually has the driving skills. The reason he started getting beat was because the time skips removed large parts of the actual driving. In fact, what the poster fails to mention is that abney currently holds the title for the "No skips" run and has for years.
@@JJokerMoreau That's part of speedrunning though and is why multiple categories exist. Skips are a huge part and Abney seems to struggle with some of them compared to Kazuya.
@benayers8622 wouldn't exactly call him a one trick pony, he dominated the record for 5 years and held onto it for another 2 before kazuya managed to edge past. Man's a legend
abney317's reaction to the new shortcut was like in a biopic when a historical figure does the big thing or makes the big discovery and some guy says something like "Is that really possible?" or "Is... is that right?"

Why are we meant to know him? I was expecting this to be the username of Matthias, the guy who was the dominating player in the last Mario Kart 64 video, but it isn’t
@@Pikaton659we know him if you watched the video that grew the biggest for Summoning Salt, the world record for Choco mountain. In that Abney became the star of the video as he went from an random person who was like ranked 50th to getting the first ever weathertenko, then later being the only person I think currently to hit that trick 3 times in an row. Since then he also appeared in the other MK64 videos such as the last one being where he and others were keeping Matthias from getting all 32 records in Mk64
After over 15 months of not holding the record, Abney crushed the record by almost 15 seconds on July 27th, 2023. It looks like his story isn't over yet
The summoning-salt-verse has gone for long enough to the point where Abney has gone from the hero who pulled off the first triple weathertenko, that lived for long enough to turn into the villain that prevented MR’s world record perfection on the no shortcuts category at several different times, to the protagonist of his own story in the full game run. Really speaks volumes about the quality of this channel.
Funny how Abney was part of the Alliance to challenge Mathias, only to find himself in a similar position a few years later :D Edit: Also, why am I concerned about Abney's ability to keep going in spite of setbacks when I _know_ he's a guy willing to throw 26700 attempts at a single track?
I thought of it like that at first but it's more than that... all speedrunners have the same chance of getting the best seed via rng, but only the best player will be able to capitalize on it.
The problem with that analogy, is that whatever this 'slot machine' gives you, you still have to have the skills to use it properly. The best RNG won't help you, if you're a shit player.
@@eviljesus84 The problem with the problem with that analogy is that the better players become the more RNG comes into play. We are not talking about random players here but the best of the best. If the players were able to perfectly execute every skip then there is only RNG left that decides the time.
Clearly the other players who sent abney317 the new short cuts were just abney317 from the future in either a terminator or multiverse type scenario. Possibly a Bill and Ted...

Imagine if one day, a guy starts speedruning under the nickname of "YourMeat". Then trains for thousands of hours, give it all and challenge the whole world, just to see one day on UA-cam a video from summoning salt called : "The quest to beat YourMeat"
Yeah, but his safe play in his most recent world record run just to ensure that he got the record instead of pushing his limits was probably a mistake. Easy to say in hindsight, but he should’ve maximized the potential of the single run where everything did go his way, pushed it sub 23, and it would still be his
@@lebrinjims3580I disagree. In hindsight, we can say that sure, but what if he was risky and ended up making a mistake that cost him the run? Then we'd be saying he should have played it safe to ensure the world record.
The fact that you do things like make freeze frames any time the lightning bolt was used to avoid the flashing lights shows the amount of skill and consideration you put into video editing. Another banger of a video, great job!
I had also been really confused by this. I thought I must be missing something, and I was. So that was an anti-epileptic thing? Looking it up, the lightning affect flashing is quite mild; the sky blinks once or twice. That would be quite frightening to have such few flash-like things be able to cause such a massive issue. I hope it would take severe epilepsy for that level of stimuli to take you out. Anime shows, game shows, casinos, and Vegas in general, would just all have to be the worst.
and here i was wondering wether or not this was due to the game itself or abneys stream... I didnt even consider editing it to make the video more accessible
I love how SummoningSalt videos stay Trending for days on end after release. It's for good reason: The work and detail that goes into them is incredible. Well done, sir.
I loved that when he pulled it up, even before his mouth began hanging, you could see the cogs in his head turning. He was 100% ready to start using it as soon as he realized he could.
One thing I respect about Kazuya is the sheer confidence that he’s going to get the right item, Abney is staying out until he gets what he needs Kazuya says “wouldn’t it be better to be on my way to the trick?”
The difference is abney is trying to get slight gains to consolidate his world record, and Kazuya is trying to demolish any of his previous attempts in order to take the world record even once. Simply because it had been several years since anyone had even come close to taking away the world record from abney. They have different mindsets and different goals for this reason.
@@Vesdus reminds me of this quote about how a rabbit wants it more because it is running for its life when being hunted whereas the wolf is simply hunting for another meal. The rabbit wanted it more where it was common place for the wolf

I was lucky enough to meet Forest at this year's PA Meet. Was truly remarkable hearing first hand accounts from him just across the table from me. An absolute legend!
Massive respect to the speed running community. How do these dudes have not only the skill but the endless energy and free time to put towards this? I’m in awe. Life is so exhausting. To have that level of focus and patience is something else. Love these vids!
When you showed the apirl 2022 run trying not to disclose who had gotten it early I still knew it was Kazuya because his red shell skip set up in royal raceway is slightly different than abney's
I could also tell from comparing Abney and Kazuya's game captures. Kazuya's game is a bit more muted color-wise in comparison to Abney's. Still did a pretty good job for the layman, who don't pay close attention the different set ups of different runners or a slight differences in video quality.
HOLY- That was the fastest 55 minutes of my life! I thought this was just a quick 15 minute video unlike summoning’s other videos, looks like i was wrong! Just proves how entertaining you are, being able to make me glued to the screen for an hour without realizing!
Wow, seriously some of your best writing yet man. This was a really great story and I love the message at the end too - The feeling of losing a record is always rough, and isn't talked about enough. You did everyone here justice, phenomenal video man. Big ups to the runners you chose to cover too. I don't know if I know someone who has over 70.000+ attempts in a single category.. MK64 runners are super dedicated, much respect
The ability of some speedrunners to keep going is truly incredible. Just the thought of seeing a >30 second lead on the standing WR evaporate from bad luck alone is crushing to me.
The best part is how casual Forest64 was about the discovery. He couldve easily cashed in on it by posting a youtube video, etc. But he just knew his own record will be beat so he just went to Abney "hey, new cut for you"
Its simple. What keeps them going is the quest to become the best. Its like in sports, people grind + train all day to get better and to become some of the very best to ever do it. Being known as one of the greatest in something you're passionate about is everything to some.
I'll admit i too felt a bit bad for abney, but at the same time glad for Kazuya. I honestly get the feeling from this video that they're probably both at a similar skill level, (in different ways), and who has the lowest time is really a matter of RNG and attempt numbers at this point.
It's unbelievable how amazing story telling can make you invested in a topic you know little about and will likely have zero interest in after the video is over. Fantastic work.
It feels like a birthday gift whenever you drop a video. The perfect blend of entertaining storytelling & informative deep-dives into speedrunning lore, and of course, always paired with that iconic music. Never stop doing what you do!
The final message of the video is what makes your channel so important. Thank you for creating the place for people in the middle of the ride to shine again and not be forgotten. Really, thank you.
SS has such an impact on the speedrunning pastime that it's almost a monumental achievement to be featured in his videos. Congrats to Abney for actually being the entire focus of a video SS put months of hard work, research, and dedication into. No matter how long it takes SS to make a video about any given speed run game or topic, best believe I'll be right there to watch it a day or less after the release. Thank you SummoningSalt. I wish all content creators could create videos as indepth, grasping, researched, and simply amazing watches as you. UA-cam would be much more of a profound place if we had more people like you here.
this is outstanding. i stumbled onto Abney's stream a few years back and thought it was cool and kept watching now and again, but knowing this full context and story makes it all so much cooler. thanks a ton for this work, and for helping me enjoy speedrunning even more.
So in 2019, I went and saw a DJ live, his name was GJones at The Fillmore in Denver, CO. Right before his set started. He brought out Abney to play mario kart live on stage, and GJones was remixing the audio from the game. Funny ass thing to happen
I always loved prospects of "this incredible skip was always there and known of , everyone just kinda forgot", makes the human element shine through the TAS-like grinds
I mean, Matt Turk wrote the directions to beat himself in the game and it took nearly a decade of very skilled players to first believe him, then to surpass him.
I showed this to a friend of mine who's not really into videogames, let alone speedrunning. However, even he had fond memories of this from back in the day. Needless to say, our jaws dropped when the two time skips appeared. What a ride. Love your content, keep up the great work!
@@kindlin My own twisted mind. I don't know, just something about SummonSalt's delivery of that sentence seemed to be setting up something very funny for me.
Murder might be an efficient way of protecting your world record, but it certainly wouldn't contribute to a better sense of community in the MK64 speedrunning scene.
I love the fact that Kalimari Desert is on the thumbnail. It’s really not the most central track to the story, obviously not. Tracks like Royal Raceway and Rainbow Road, or even Mario Raceway are more significant. Kalimari Desert still has important tech, but with it being Abney’s course it makes perfect sense. It gives the feeling that no one track is above all others in importance, and really symbolizes the people who make it possible and the fact that speedrunning is about a long journey as much as it is crazy time saves. I’m probably thinking too much into it, but it’s a perfect choice in my opinion. It symbolizes the beauty of this classic.
Two high level speed runners running a game at the same time is one of the most intense things ever on the same tier as watching your favorite team and they’re rivals going at it.
Your videos are so incredibly good. I hope you don’t take this as an insult, but I can’t fall asleep to anything else. I’ve watched every video hundreds of times because of this.
I would normally be asleep at this time since it's 2am but I'm feeling unwell, however because of that I was able to see the sub 23 record by Abney. God is great
I cannot express how excited I am for this. Abney has worked his way up through the past MK64 videos from the underdog who performed the first 3/3 Weathertenko to being deserving of a video all about him attempting to keep his dominant streak - Summoning Salt does it again!
Ok, I'm not even 5 minutes in and I have to compliment the improvement in your story-telling skills. Hiding the reveal of the skip behind Abney's reaction is brilliant. Your videos were always great, but your editing has improved 10x over the years. Really nice work!

@@JJokerMoreau That's part of speedrunning though and is why multiple categories exist. Skips are a huge part and Abney seems to struggle with some of them compared to Kazuya.

That was one thing I noticed, the way he did the trick looked super cool, driving into it as it turns around to go the right way. Peak style for a trick in mario kart
I had the exact same thought! Abney meets the shell head-on, while Kazuya does a huge hook. It looks way riskier but also super stylish how Kazuya does it.
idk if it is, but it looks way harder to do than just running into it like abney does

This is a great analogy for rivalry speedrunning
I thought of it like that at first but it's more than that... all speedrunners have the same chance of getting the best seed via rng, but only the best player will be able to capitalize on it.
The problem with that analogy, is that whatever this 'slot machine' gives you, you still have to have the skills to use it properly. The best RNG won't help you, if you're a shit player.
@@eviljesus84 The problem with the problem with that analogy is that the better players become the more RNG comes into play. We are not talking about random players here but the best of the best. If the players were able to perfectly execute every skip then there is only RNG left that decides the time.

Yeah, but his safe play in his most recent world record run just to ensure that he got the record instead of pushing his limits was probably a mistake. Wow I didn't realize that! I noticed the video was off but just assumed it was the recording. That's so cool of him to edit those little details
I just thought it was the game freezing for a second.

One thing I respect about Kazuya is the sheer confidence that he’s going to get the right item, Abney is staying out until he gets what he needs Kazuya says “wouldn’t it be better to be on my way to the trick?”
Hmm
The difference is abney is trying to get slight gains to consolidate his world record, and Kazuya is trying to demolish any of his previous attempts in order to take the world record even once.
