This is really interesting. I always noticed that it's easier to access distortion with higher notes but I was afraid I might hurt my voice trying it out. Now I have confidence in trying it out.

I am starting to believe that I might be singer after all 🤗
This is just amazing technique. So valuable. Turn up your very natural distortion plugin to 10/10. Fry at its best. Thank you for posting this and making the world musically better
I havent heard that Shinedown song in so long, didnt even know it was their song but I recognize it. Interesting to see these 3 different vocalists in the same video. Awesome.
This was really helpful. Would love to see you do a few takes on Trent Reznors voice on records like “wish” “reptile” and anything in that 91-95 era. He has such an amazing mixture of melodic gentleness and gritty distortion to his voice
I just love how he educates us with the attitude that says all those rock n roll singing wasn't only meant for those who are talented by nature (for a long time we had this idea, that we never get ''there'') but everyone who eager to pursue can get there in healthy manner with correct knowledge. Most importantly, with so much joy!! Love this channel and huge shoutout for my secret vocal coach!
You have definitely discovered great ways to hack the voice, even sort of trick yourself into singing the way you want to. Excellent. It's a shame that I am the only want that wants a How to Sing Like Rod Stewart video 🤠
Honestly, in my lifetime, all your videos are helpful with my vocal training. I'm not trying to copy the singers' styles but I found out that I had a voice of my own. Your advice in each video is gradually correcting me at most of the times. Even screaming may not be the same but I try to find my way out and not to be like someone.
Thanks Chris ! Really inspiring ! On my side, my warm up routine for the last two years to get my mixed voice and distortion right has been: 1) Breaking the law - Judas priest (It is a safe song to get my middle range and pronunciation right) 2) Living after midnight - Judas Priest - this opens up my mixed and head voice with a little bit of grit. 3) The ace of spade - Motorhead - There i get my full distortion in mixed voice. It works fine so far with these ! Let me know what tou think 😀
it would be amazing to see your analysis on Eddie berg from imminence. he seems to really have a good control of his cleans and distorted cleans and also his screams.
Loved this! I modified one of the lines. I started with notes above my bridge with "Give me five", and then hit notes below my bridge with "Give me too" while keeping all the upper body parts loose, not trying to reach standarts in pitch accuracy. I did not care. No judgement, as you said. Then I continue with "I'm feelling fine" above the bridge and "I'm feeling good" below the bridge. It just happened that it perfectly ryhmes with the first part. :) Anyway, I suggest to everyone to make up lyrics as you're going along. It does not have to ryhme, but if it does, that's even better. It will motivate your creative side of your brain. The brain will understand its assignment and will realize that you're serious about learning to sing.
Such an important vid! You could have all the technique in the world but none of it's any good if you haven't figured out how your body uniquely warms up. I definitely feel like warming up my voice is like kneading bread dough, and you bouncing around all 3 phrases at the end helped me feel less crazy when I do the same. Also learned a lot from Spencer Sotelo talking about warming up and getting teased by his bandmates in one of your past vids
Hello Chris Liepe. It would be nice of you do a vocal analysis of The Mars Volta singer, Cedric Bixter Zavala. I think many people appreciate him as a singer.
I don't know how to use my distortion vocal strings. I can't. I know they are in my throat above my normal vocal strings, but I can't use them... Maybe this is the reason why I admire Axl Rose so much. Regards.
Thanks for this warmup. Also on a related topic, can I share an experience I had while using this warmup Firstly I am a guy who tends to be not so connected to my emotions, and sometimes downright cold. But while doing this warmup routine, or getting the concept of it I applied it to feel out a song by the deftones, I think it was risk, and somehow as I was exploring that line you make us walk between the head voice and the fuller high register, there was an emotional breakthrough, and I found myself singing with emotion, then breaking into full on crying, then breaking into hysterical laughter
I remember seeing Soundgarden videos like this one and thinking Cornell was a poor live singer. When I saw them for the Superunknown tour in Edmonton AB, he sounded fantastic! I was 13 at the time so it took me years to realize that by that point they were propbably changing up the set lists so they weren't just starting the show with the harder stuff.
That must have been absolutely amazing to see them live as a 13 year old!! I didn't get to see Cornell live until I was in my early 20s when he performed with Audioslave and then I got to see him again in 2012 after SG reunited.
@@chrisliepe It's still one of the best concerts I've been to, but I'm obviously biased. I never got to see them or Cornell live again after that. There were so many good shows though. Like seeing Foo Fighters on the B stage at one fest, with Perfect Circle and Smashing Pumpkins on the main stage. Foo Fighters had just released their 1st album and people still didn't know what to make of the poppier sound. Good times!
Maybe I need to join your free course. But would be cool if you had this but without all the explanations for re watching purpose. More like tradition warm up vids but with what you’re saying to do here. (And with Julian C lines) You rock
You’re ready for one of my courses for sure! They are structured in a much more guided practice format. UA-cam viewers generally won’t sit through a practice session, but those really wanting to go deep will really resonate with the approach I present in my courses. Head to chrisliepe.com to explore different ways we can work together!
Thanks so much, Chris! A couple of year ago I was able get all nasty & raspy up in my top end (and it was getting easier), but then I stopped to focus on my clean singing (for fear I was doing it wrong) and it’s been really hard to get my voice back into that gear when I want it to, so this was exactly what I needed right now! 🙌🏼 Side note - could you please teach how to approach those super high Prince screams safely? Namely the end of Kiss/I Wanna Be Your Lover. I guess it’s kinda like Brian Johnson too. Thanks!
Great topic. Is the effect of warming up before singing with distortion similar to the effect warming up in the gym with a couple of light to moderate sets before doing an all-out set? Is it to get the blood rushing to the vocal cords to make them more flexible, just like the weight lifter warms up to get the blood rushing to his muscles, tendons and ligaments? I don't know how well the analogy holds up - if people actually tear, pull, or sprain vocal cords. When singers don't warm up and immediately sing some songs with distortion is the type of injury they're risking to their vocal cords or vocal tract equivalent to a torn muscle or tendon, or is what they're risking more of an accumulation of damage where it slowly roughens and damages the vocal cords over time? By the way, I remember you saying singing "Fuel" necessitates hyper-compression. Since all vocal distortion utilizes compression, as far as I know, is the hyper-compression technique just a matter of compressing harder, or is there actually a different technique involved in achieving hyper-compression?
@@chrisliepe appreciate it, man. These videos are gonna help a lot with my vocals and im trying to find the right style to match the lyrics I've written.
You sound great as ever Chris!! Would this be an appropriate way to get that robert plant range down? I believe I'm a first tenor where as early plant sounds like a pure tenor, some days I hit his notes as pure as him but most days ehhh.
Ok any advice on how to do high (for me, like above C4 lol) without getting killed by any neighbours IF you're a deep voiced female with very low passaggios (meaning I gotta push pretty fast if I wanna sound belty, strong) The caveat of course being I'll yodel if I'm not careful and push too hard when trying to mix what I cannot do with first register belt
Hey Chris. Covid took away my singing voice so ive stopped with your lessons for a while. Is there some exercise you recommend for voice recovery post coivd? It just falls apart whenever i use a raised larynx position. Even using head voice is difficult. Im sure im not alone in this.
Absolutely not alone. Mine hasn't been the same since covid. Hey Chris, been following you for a long time and you’ve been really helpful, not only for my voice and singing but for learning anything really.
