(The USFSA would not comment when asked about it... but they are not denying it either.) You are judged on your private life as well as what you do in competition. Most of the people that were hating on her for this, were cheering when OJ walked. Hypocrites.
Watching her skate is never boring! I’m watching all this after watching ‘i, tonya’ I’m seeing an amazing skater with abilities that no one else had. So sad things turned out the way they did. She seems to be in a good place now and she deserves it!
There really was something special to Tonya's skating that year. Unfortunately, Tonya let some of it go by her own attitude, not practicing and gaining weight. Also, by firing Dodie Teachman. Her choreographer Barbara Flowers was awesome too. Barbara knew how to choreograph a program that suited Tonya's style.
She didn't have enough support. she would have went all way had she have had a good supply team .. I watch her skate stink over and over again her speed just incredible
When you watch this program, you have to wonder: What if she had been brought up in a solid family? What if she had been afforded the support by the skating community? What if she had never met Jeff Gilooly? Tonya, honestly, remains the best American technical skater who ever lived. I know that now a Triple Lutz/Triple Toe is nothing, but her precision and power on her landings has been unmatched for decades. She seemed to destroy her "accessories" at an alarming rate. Busted skate blades, busted eyelets, busted laces, seemingly at every competition. While it seemed "convenient" when she failed, you also have to wonder how hard she worked those for them to constantly, constantly fail -- even when she won a champion.
Her amazing skating was a result of her not being in a solid family. If everything had been comfortable growing up she wouldn't have seeked refuge at a skating rink and put everything she had into it there. The great skating, the bad upbringing are both part of the same story and can't be changed. She is tragic yet beautiful and sometimes that's all that can be said

While Skating was indeed a Refuge for her and she wanted to show that she is better than People like her mother told her, I still think she would have even better with a stable Family and marriage/relationship and a real support System. She would have won. Yamaguchi's winning program contained errors. While she was more graceful than Harding, she wasn't a completely balanced skater herself. Her jumps were a lot smaller. She didn't grow into her style until she turned pro. If Olympic golds were handed out for merely the best performance of this season -- this would have been it. No questions asked. But she peaked early, really early. Too early for an Olympic year.

But the height she gets with her jumps, the power and force behind her moves, they're unmatched...to date, I haven't seen this kind of strength. What a brilliant skater.
Best female jumper in the history of the sport. Look how distinct her edges are going into her jumps, the height, the distance covered. Her lutz off a long outside edge is just so beautiful.
And people said she wasn't artistic. This program was very artistic. She hit every accent of the music, beautiful arm movements, very nice. 1:40 to 3:15 is the best part of the program in my opinion and a perfect example of her artistry.
People say she lacks artistry because she's more abrupt in her natural movement. She's not "soft" and can't display "passivity" and when she tries, it looks inauthentic. She couldn't skate like the other champions of her time. Which is fine because when you replay the old stuff like this, you see who really made an impression and who merely appealed to the status quo. However, fortunately, Tonya was a lot more than just the 3A. She's an underrated spinner, rarely were those mentioned, but she was the best American spinner of her time aside from Paul Wylie. Her presence on the ice was undeniable. Her other jumps were also a sight to behold. Her Lutz and Loop were a hell of a lot better, bigger and more impressive than anyone else's in the 1990s, including the men. I just wish they'd cooled it on the mid sections of saxophone in her programs, though.

Iv watched kristi and kerigans performances they’re good but there is just that something about tonya that the other two don’t have ! Only some people have that spark in them whether is ballet hip hop singing rapping careers and tonya just had it when she skated!

I think when you have confidence, overcoming hurdles, like the laces, is easier than when you have a lot on your mind such as during the Olympics, not to mention being accused of taking part in a scandal to hurt a direct competitor.

5 months. I guess a lot can happen in 5 months. She should have been riding the wave after Skate America. Don't know what happened. Because she was not that great 4 months later at Nationals, either. Whatever the case, I loved her skating.
This along with the '91 program where she won, are probably her best. I see a whole lot of artistic impression in this performance 1:41 - 3:26 I think it was how powerful she skated, that made them write her off as not being artistic enough, they did the same to Midori Ito at times
Ya know, I see a lot that her skating went downhill from here. And it's true that her 92 and 93 seasons were disappointing but she was well and truly on the way back to her best by 94 and who knows what could have been achieved in the years that followed what went down with Nancy Kerrigan. Heartbreaking really. The greatest of all time cut down just as she was getting herself sorted. Nothing but admiration for Tonya.
Yes, she DID have the best thighs in the skating industry, in the sense that they were strong, powerful, and enabled her to do insane jumps. The ironic thing is that the press was always sniping at her for having supposedly "chunky" thighs. They weren't "chunky," they were pure muscle, and it was those muscles that enabled her to get the height to do triple axels in the first place. So, they loved the triple axels, but hated the physicality that enabled her to actually do them. How messed up is that?
Watching her skate brings tears to my eyes! I admire how she came from nothing and fought her way to the top, Tonya had such charisma and power! My favorite skater and Olympian of all time is Tonya!
The jumping she did in this program is better than what most of the women are doing today, 20 years later. Especially her triple axel, along with Ito's, much better than the ones the women are doing today (barely rotated).

Exactly, she rearranged the jumps. She opened up with the 3Lz which took basically all her energy away, because she took like 15 seconds setting it up, which caused her to rush her 3A.
As the years go by, the bar she raised has only gotten more out of reach for EVERYONE who continues to come after her. So so so remarkable, Tanya's blessed talent & hard, hard work. The gratitude....there really aren't words when someone like this comes along. Scott Hamilton rightly states, "no one's going to beat this performance". Still the case decades later....and counting. No one even getting remotely close.
Midori Ito of Japan was 1st in 1989. Tonya could do triple Axel but she was the 1st American woman in 1991. Only Ito and Harding could land them in performances.

Its astonishing how perfect her triple axel was. a number of skaters over the years have done the same jump, but no one has done it with the same height, power, technique and ease. She and Ito were a class unto themselves.
I dont know much about skating but her strength in these jumps is obvious. Most of the females can technically do them, but they look like they barely get thru them whereas she knocks them out hard.
I totally agree with you. She is incredible and her jumps are HUGE! You are also totally correct in the statement that 'graceful' 'artistic' skaters are a dime a dozen and there are very few skaters who can do what Tonya did. From what I read she wasn't treated very well in the skating community even before she supposedly tried to take Nancy out of competition. I absolutely hate what happened to her and to me it was extremely excessive to run her out of skating.
One thing I think that needs to be mentioned is the demand Tonya put on her skates doing all them jumps and triples. I remember Scott Hamilton saying during the 94 Olympics that skate problems always happened to Tonya - making her sound like a whiner - when I’m reality, no other female was doing as many triples in their program as Tonya was - and we’re not seeing all the practicing prior to the competition. I know Midori Ito landed triple axels as well but I don’t know how many triple jumps she did in all her programs. Tonya was a beast on the ice - I really wish she would’ve landed the first Triple Axel in the Olympics and got herself one of those medals.
A lot of people talk about her jumps (especially the triple axel), but her spins were so beautiful, especially her layback. She had one of the most beautiful layback spins I've ever seen. Her critics always said that Tonya wasn't graceful, but I beg to differ. Her spins and spirals were so stunning.
Regardless of what happened later on no one can deny the talent this girl had!!! I remember watching this competition and she was always one of my favorites.

Asada had a way of casually entering the jump with a hesitation and then simply hopping up into it. It's hard to describe her casual style of triple axle, but it was never exciting. Even Rika's isn't like this. Tonya's triple axle was enormous because she attacked it every time. All her jumps were huge. Even better than her 1991 U.S. Nationals triple axle, this remains the best ladies triple axle I've ever seen bar none.

I personally don't like her style to jump, I prefer Rika's, but unfortunately it didn't matter if Tonya had it or not, she wasted her career and never could do anything mayor because she was never consistent, and it was a shame because apparently she raise a lot of expectations that she could not fulfill.

I have never seen a rating of ladies triple axels where anyone is rated ahead of Midori. And as far as best triple axel ever, the 3A landed by Midori at the albertville olympics was honored by the olympic channel as an impossible moment at the winter olympic games. She executed that 3A in the last minute of her LP, and unbelievable feat (Scott Hamilton quote). Tonya never landed a triple axel in competition other than in 1991. Midori landed them from 1988 to 1996. There is a video of Midori in the 1993 pro championships which she won over Kristi landing a triple axel which the announcer (Sandra Bezic I believe) said she had never seen a woman jump like that. Take a look at it.

After watching many of those Tanya Harding's programs... I can see that the judge's had it in for her, they weren't about to let Tonya Harding win the gold!
I like her brazen strength. She doesn't try to be a thoroughbred or a fairy princess, she is powerful. I wish there had never been the attack on Nancy Kerrigan. We lost a wonderful skater in Tonya when it happened.
It's too bad she didn't get to compete under the current COP, it would have favored her style. Tonya looks like she could have jumped quads if she wanted too. Her rotation is nice and speedy and she gets a lot height. Her spins are also very fast and she stays in one spot. Ironically, the scandal turned out to be the best thing that ever happened if you were a figure skater in the mid 1990s. They all made bank. Nancy was never consistent in her long programs and I think the assault helped her mentally. I am not saying that it makes everything okay, but look at Nancy's LPs prior to attack. Not very reliable.

They weren't "chunky," they were pure muscle, and it was those muscles that enabled her to get the height to do triple axels in the first place. So, they loved the triple axels, but hated the physicality that enabled her to actually do them. How messed up is that?

There’s no doubt in my mind that Tonya was amazing. Her jumps were incredible. She had amazing height.
The jumping she did in this program is better than what most of the women are doing today, 20 years later. Especially her triple axel, along with Ito's, much better than the ones the women are doing today (barely rotated).

Exactly, she rearranged the jumps. She opened up with the 3Lz which took basically all her energy away, because she took like 15 seconds setting it up, which caused her to rush her 3A.

As the years go by, the bar she raised has only gotten more out of reach for EVERYONE who continues to come after her. So so so remarkable, Tanya's blessed talent & hard, hard work. The gratitude....there really aren't words when someone like this comes along. Scott Hamilton rightly states, "no one's going to beat this performance". Still the case decades later....and counting. No one even getting remotely close.
Tonya Harding needs to be in the Guinness World Book of Records for her first women's triple axel!
Midori Ito of Japan was 1st in 1989. Tonya could do triple Axel but she was the 1st American woman in 1991. Only Ito and Harding could land them in performances.

I've watched this over and over; what a performance from Tonya. It is so good to see how she succeeded so beautifully..
Its astonishing how perfect her triple axel was. a number of skaters over the years have done the same jump, but no one has done it with the same height, power, technique and ease. She and Ito were a class unto themselves.
I dont know much about skating but her strength in these jumps is obvious. Most of the females can technically do them, but they look like they barely get thru them whereas she knocks them out hard.
No one has ever mentioned on youtube that she does a VERY difficult pivot move in all her programs where she is almost defying gravity.

I totally agree with you. She is incredible and her jumps are HUGE! You are also totally correct in the statement that 'graceful' 'artistic' skaters are a dime a dozen and there are very few skaters who can do what Tonya did. From what I read she wasn't treated very well in the skating community even before she supposedly tried to take Nancy out of competition. I absolutely hate what happened to her and to me it was extremely excessive to run her out of skating.
One thing I think that needs to be mentioned is the demand Tonya put on her skates doing all them jumps and triples. I remember Scott Hamilton saying during the 94 Olympics that skate problems always happened to Tonya - making her sound like a whiner - when I’m reality, no other female was doing as many triples in their program as Tonya was - and we’re not seeing all the practicing prior to the competition. I know Midori Ito landed triple axels as well but I don’t know how many triple jumps she did in all her programs. Tonya was a beast on the ice - I really wish she would’ve landed the first Triple Axel in the Olympics and got herself one of those medals.
A lot of people talk about her jumps (especially the triple axel), but her spins were so beautiful, especially her layback. She had one of the most beautiful layback spins I've ever seen. Her critics always said that Tonya wasn't graceful, but I beg to differ. Her spins and spirals were so stunning.
Regardless of what happened later on no one can deny the talent this girl had!!! I remember watching this competition and she was always one of my favorites.
I could watch her all day. What else could you give her for technical merit other than a 6?
No woman out there now is doing this. She could give chills. Talk about talent. The world of figure skating should never have kicked her out

@@aracelichely2954 Not at all. Ito, Asada or even Rika today never did a triple axle like that. They all did them well, but NOT like that. Ito was hampered by her height. Asada had a way of casually entering the jump with a hesitation and then simply hopping up into it. It's hard to describe her casual style of triple axle, but it was never exciting. Even Rika's isn't like this. Tonya's triple axle was enormous because she attacked it every time. All her jumps were huge. Even better than her 1991 U.S. Nationals triple axle, this remains the best ladies triple axle I've ever seen bar none.
@@L1623VP The first comment never said anything about the way the jump was made, she just talked about who was attempting the jump and there has been some girls, Tanya is not the only one. I personally don't like her style to jump, I prefer Rika's, but unfortunately it didn't matter if Tonya had it or not, she wasted her career and never could do anything mayor because she was never consistent, and it was a shame because apparently she raise a lot of expectations that she could not fulfill.

Your response to that was that there are lots of girls doing triple axles, essentially implying that all ladies' triple axles are created equal. My response was: they are not. You missed the point of the original commentor. She was setting Tonya's triple axle apart, and I agree. It's like no one else's. Tonya's overall career and consistency have nothing to do with this. Comparing apples to apples, just the triple axle, Tonya's triple axle crushes everyone else's in speed, height, power, and coverage across the ice. The fact that you have to drag in all this irrelevant information about expectations, consistency, wasted potential, etc. proves you can't support your claim. Even Rika blew one of her axles at the GPF this year. Consistency? This has nothing to do with liking Tonya. Just based on the triple axle, she easily has the most powerful one in every respect, and no one as of yet has surpassed her in that regard.
@@L1623VP There are numerous videos of ladies triple axels available on you tube. In any of them that have ratings, Midori is always rated #1. I have never seen a rating of ladies triple axels where anyone is rated ahead of Midori. And as far as best triple axel ever, the 3A landed by Midori at the albertville olympics was honored by the olympic channel as an impossible moment at the winter olympic games. She executed that 3A in the last minute of her LP, and unbelievable feat (Scott Hamilton quote). Tonya never landed a triple axel in competition other than in 1991. Midori landed them from 1988 to 1996. There is a video of Midori in the 1993 pro championships which she won over Kristi landing a triple axel which the announcer (Sandra Bezic I believe) said she had never seen a woman jump like that. Take a look at it.

A terrific performer on skates -- a pleasure to watch. So sorry for the mess that happened in her life/career. Just seems that if she could have kept going, she would be a top female skater to be remembered always.

Nope, she isn't the greatest,imo! Michelle Kwan won more titles than any other American skater! She is and still is the best we had!

After watching many of those Tanya Harding's programs... I can see that the judge's had it in for her, they weren't about to let Tonya Harding win the gold!
She won several competitions over Kristi and Nancy so I don't get why people say she was judged unfairly?!?!?

Cameron Metrejean I really don't think they do, there was evidence of the implication of her in Nancy's attack, so the decition was justify.
I like her brazen strength. She doesn't try to be a thoroughbred or a fairy princess, she is powerful. I wish there had never been the attack on Nancy Kerrigan. We lost a wonderful skater in Tonya when it happened.
It's too bad she didn't get to compete under the current COP, it would have favored her style. Tonya looks like she could have jumped quads if she wanted too. Her rotation is nice and speedy and she gets a lot height. Her spins are also very fast and she stays in one spot. Ironically, the scandal turned out to be the best thing that ever happened if you were a figure skater in the mid 1990s. They all made bank. Nancy was never consistent in her long programs and I think the assault helped her mentally. I am not saying that it makes everything okay, but look at Nancy's LPs prior to attack. Not very reliable.
Melle Kerber I read that she tried a 4A. She almost broke her ankle. Strained it real bad and didn't try it again.
