    People often criticized Tonya for the music she picked for her programs, but in my opinion, the hard-driven, rock and techno pop music she chose (Batman, People Are Still Having Sex, etc.) actually suited her skating style to a tee. A powerful skater with big jumps needs that kind of music to accentuate his or her style of skating. Classical dainty music didn’t suit Tonya. I wished the judges saw that, but many did not and chastised Tonya for being “not artistic enough.” In my view, Tonya was artistic with the powerful music she used to match her spectacular skating. Kerrigan, on the other hand, to me, was colorless on the ice and kind of boring to watch with her conventional movements and elevator/shopping mall music (think John Tesh, Yanni, etc.).

    Banned simply because she was involved, in the slightest bit, of the bashing of poor Kerrigan’s knee (Kerrigan refuses to come to terms, forgive or even talk to Tonya to this day for seemingly no reason). Quite frankly, it’s really unfair. Out of respect, USFSA should unban her or at the very least give her back her 1994 title. In my opinion, the banning was overkill.

    • @chooseyourpoison5105
      @chooseyourpoison5105 4 роки тому +6

      I agree. What gets up my nose is that she was also stripped of the titles she won BEFORE the attack. She won those fair and square. Stripping them from her had nothing to do with justice, and everything to do with petty revenge.

      Shawn Tippie keep in mind she had NO IDEA kerrigan was going to get attacked. so the stripping of her title was unjustified and unfair. hell, it’s the same as kerrigan getting injured due to an accident and being unable to compete, tonya wasn’t involved, so it’s not her fault.

      She didn’t have money to buy the fancy ones like other competitors. If you don’t know anything about her many do a little research before you comment because she worked extremely hard to get where she did and it wasn’t her fault that she couldn’t afford extravagant dresses. She was also in an abusive relationship which in the end ended her career, so it was probably hard for her to organise getting equipment for competitions, she did her best and that was more than enough. I think it’s acc really nice and in the end skaters aren’t judged on their costumes they’re judged on ability, and she was the best by far.

    When you think of the bigger picture. This was supposed to be Tonya’s come back year! What would hitting Nancy in the leg benefit her? Even if Nancy wasnt hit I’m sure tonya would have pulled out 3A here and possibly won or came second to Nancy, and they both would have gone to Olympics and had a happy time, moved on as professionals. The attack was supposed to get Nancy out of Olympics, Tonya knew how the judging worked, her and Nancy were NOT the only skaters in the world. Oksana was already a favorite and would seem she was already chosen as the favored one for Olympics that year.and all this about with Nancy out of the way Tonya would be ‘the chosen one’ as if, she was never going to be the chosen one and she knew it more than anyone, They would have prob payed more attention to Nicole Bobek,who had qualities of both women in her. I think the judges and association were already over both Tonya and Nancy by this year. And wanted to move on with younger ‘fresh’ cute skaters. And why would Tonya plan a stupid attack when she worked so hard to get in shape for this moment!? Kind of Asinine to even think it. People loved the soap opera like class war thing going on. And that’s what created the huge hoopla. Unfortunate.

    • @englishclasschaug
      @englishclasschaug 5 років тому +6

      I've often thought of that as well. Nancy wasn't competing really against Tonya, nor Tonya against Nancy. Baiul's World title and ballet style set her up for a likely Olympic podium spot. Harding and Kerrigan needed to use the Nationals as their berth to Olympics. But neither skater really needed to worry about that.

      That's completely and utterly untrue.
      Nancy lost to Tonya on many occasions including at the 1991 US Nationals where Tonya won the title (Nancy finished 3rd) and 1991 World Championships (Tonya won silver, Nancy bronze).
      Tonya beat Kristi Yamaguchi twice in 1991 (Nationals and Skate America) when she was nailing her Triple Axels.
      It was only by 1992 that Nancy was beating Tonya every time they met in competition, because by then Tonya was not training properly, out of shape and more focused on her abusive marriage.
      Had Tonya kept up the kind of form she was in during 1991, skating history would likely be very different. Sadly she sabotaged her own career by wasting her enormous talent after her success that year

      I've maintained that even though it'd be easy to assume she knew: Tonya was and always has been terrible at hiding her personal life from her professional image. She had a tough girl look and way of speaking, but she isn't that person (given how much she's always blamed others for her shortcomings) and is much weaker than she wanted you to think. She's not tough at all, she just plays the role. I've found, in life, that the girls who talk like she does are also always the first to cry. Tonya was always the first to cry with every skate malfunction, costume problem and marriage issues that plagued her.
      If she had known about the attack, the guilt would have been immediately evident. She'd have been paranoid. No doubt. Instead, she delivered the best 3 Lutz/2 Toe combo that skating, even 25 years later, has ever witnessed. She really thought that this was her moment.

      @@LauRa-re9un Tonya would get off the podium from this event as the cheif suspect in the incident. Nancy didn't require a hospital stay as her injury was a bone bruise, which is painful AF but not a life threatening problem. She was supposed to walk without aid as part of her recovery and underwent physical therapy to regain her jumps and flexibility, which she did quite well. I believe the "plot" (I'm putting it in quotes as it was possibly the worst plan ever conceived) unraveled in Detroit as teh FBI interviewed both Harding and Gilooly (spelling) and then within a week of the couple returning to Oregon as Erckhardt would confess after a witness came forward identifying him as the "mastermind" (again in quotes because that guy was dumb as hell).

      @@LauRa-re9un I've actually often had trouble believing Harding was involved in the plot to attack Nancy Kerrigan as Shawn Erckhardt was easily identifiable as the dumbest person on Earth. She never struck me as intelligent or educated, but she had one hell of a BS detector for others. So she would have seen directly through him. But with the most recent interviews she's given since the movie I can tell just by watching her talk about the attack that yes, she was aware before the attack itself and whether or not she was in the planning she should have done something. Her banishment from skating was entirely justified and they removed her 94 national champion title, which was just and right.

      She may well have not been able to afford it. Skating costumes can cost in the thousands. Harding had to make her own in the early days, and even at the Olympics her dress was made by a local dressmaker. She probably had to just settle for putting reinforced stitching in the broken strap and soldier on. Meanwhile Kerrigan had Vera Wang giving her costumes for free.
