    "That's what men say!" - I loved that, so right. Also love that she challenges the banker guy that if she were a man, he wouldn't question how much she's borrowing. And, that is not only in the 19th century that happened... it still does in one way or another, or certainly did in 1980+ when I wanted to get a loan from our local bank for a new car we were purchasing, I wanted it in my name rather than in my husband's name so as to build a credit rating... they just filed it under my husband's name anyway! I love your take on things, as well as your 'delivery,' Amanda Costner :-) p.s. we're a couple weeks behind where you watch GJ, we just got episode 6 this week on Monday 5/30

      Ug eye roll at the banker refusing to put the car in your name! Some things take forever to change. Thanks for watching the recaps, I'm able to watch ahead of HBO viewers with a VPN--I watched all the eps live on the BBC. If we get a third season I seriously hope they put them all out at once!

    Your reviews are great fun. I also feel that in the last scene, AL was scared AW would walk away. AL has a lot of trauma from past experiences with ex`s leaving for various reasons.

      Thank you! And you make a good point---Anne Lister absolutely looked desperate in the last scene and her relationship trauma is definitely contributing to how she sees things.

    The more you watch this show the more you feel for Ann Walker. She seems so pure and clearly knows something is going on which makes me want to scream every time AL just doesn't reveal the truth. The last scene where AL was berating her for wanting children was hard to watch just cos she was just being honest. Projection for sure!
    PS Ann Walker with her hair down!! :P

      Oh yeah LOVE all the AW hair down scenes 💯 I do feel for Ann Walker and it seems like she's being played by Anne which sucks

      I especially thought it was pretty crummy that AL still went off the deep end about the kids thing when AW even said.. she does NOT want a man but still imagines herself having children somehow. I realize such a thing is much easier for us to fathom in our modern day because it happens all the time now but still... didn't appreciate AL's tantrum after all of the bs she's been putting AW through.

    Exactly, like she was trying to sabotage the relationship. Saying "are you sure??" so many times, placing further doubt. Continued manipulation, making it seem that if they broke up it would be Walker's fault, and she won't have to take responsibility.

    • @AmandaCostner

      Oh yeah good point. If she shouts AW into leaving she gets out of having to fess up to the cheating.

    Any scene with Mariana is a highlight for me because she's that woman who you dislike but are still obsessed with.
    So firstly, Mariana talking shit about "Either Freddy or the medicines" cured her (as if that wouldn't raise questions from Ann Walker), then adding some French in the letter (as if that wouldn't raise more questions about that choice in what is supposed to be a friendly letter), then writing that she only wants Anne's good opinion and in the very next sentence (as if she suddenly developed amnesia), taunting Anne with the marriage announcement most likely in the hopes that it caused Ann to leave Anne so that Anne can come crawling back to her.
    Second highlight was the follow-up scene when right after Anne has stood trial over the Eliza Raines matter (a very heated trial at that which Anne most certainly thought would end their marriage from the way she started becoming tearful) and received a hard-won forgiveness from Ann, Ann picks up Mariana's letter next to read and Anne notices and freaks the f**k out, quickly reaching for Ann and asking her to dress up and go out instead of reading what the naysayers have to write.
    Third highlight was Anne and her father when he apologised. I know it was mentioned that her dad knew she was a lesbian, but so far the show hasn't shown their interaction in that light as it does with Aunt Anne so it was lovely to see, especially with him admitting he hadn't always known how to handle her. That resonated with me because it's the same thing with my mum trying, but not always understanding how to handle me (though she doesn't know the full gist of what's up with me). It stood out also because I had heard a podcaster mention that when she was younger, Anne's father once gave her a "bad woman" (which in those days would mean a prostitute), but I am yet to investigate the context of it or what actually happened since the podcaster just said it in passing; if anyone has read about this, I am curious to know the story.

    • @AmandaCostner
      @AmandaCostner  2 роки тому +1

      Oh wow VERY interesting about the possible prostitute...yes, I thought the scene with Anne's dad apologizing was also a highlight! Mariana has become quite the villain! And I love her in this role.

    Im in the US and again youre my first stop after just watching ep 6!
    3 points to make...
    1. Mentioned in brackets on the side = not posting/tagging your lady on social media by today's standards.
    2. Def gonna use "if I were a man would you..." argument when I'm haggling/dealing w a dude.
    3. This episode was smooth sailing for me until eliza rain was mentioned (my mouth dropped) and finally in the last scene when I can understand how AL would need AW to be sure about what it is she wants when it comes to children. I can relate on many levels and this scene seeing the strong AL be consoled by the sweet AW made me tear up!
    Thank you yet again for another hilarious review. This episode has made me want to flirt w an old gal or two to see what the fuss is about 🤣😎

      Do people do this bracketing of their S.O.'s ??? They don't want the official tag so it's like a half-assed tag? I only know a little about Eliza Rain, but she sounds like another fascinating person from the diaries!

      @@samanthab1923 According to the diaries AL plays a certain role when with her high class friends. Vere de Hobert for example used to think Anne was richer than she actually was. That is why she kept the option of one day settling with Anne open when being courted by her future husband. We may see Anne as a romantic (she was a romantic as much as one could be in the times when marriages were more of a social contracts and business arrangement than anything) .
      From what I gathered from reading her words she really did love Marianna. You can say she was the love of her life. She wasn't faithful to her, of course, but wearing black for nearly twenty years as mourning because her lover got married to someone else (talk about grand gestures).

    • @ramachaudhary123
      @ramachaudhary123 2 роки тому

      I love Anne lister. She is flawed even if she never sees herself as such. There was this even when Anne walked some significant distance to meet Marianna's carriage because she couldn't wait to meet her in Halifax. "The three step fiasco" Marianna's reaction was hurtful.
      That was I think the beginning of deterioration of their relationship. Even when Anne forgives Mary she still sometimes rant about it in her diaries and those entries are more hurt than angry.

    I see a lot of people annoyed at Anne Lister because of her behaviour but people are looking at in 2022 eyes but it was different in 1800s and Anne Lister has done bad thing and is Tory but alot of people were this way men doing bad and questionable things and AL is working with men and is acting like a man plus she trying to figure out. what love is and keep business afloat luckily this was recorded so many men would be this way in thoses days. just my opinion alot of the time I got different opinions to most people lol

    • @AmandaCostner
      @AmandaCostner  2 роки тому +1

      No your opinions are totally valid! Yes, we often are not fairly looking at the situation and the times. It's almost impossible for us to know what it was like for either of them. I do think it's fair to criticize Anne's lack of sympathy for Marian when she was doing the exact same thing as far as having an "unconventional" relationship.
