Uppies & Downies Good Friday 2024

Uppies and Downies is a traditional game of mass football which has been played in Workington for centuries. Each year over Easter three games are played. There are no rules. There's no team colours. There's no boundaries. Players battle to get a specially made ball to one end of the town or the other, games last as long as it takes and the player who reaches their 'hailing point' wins the game for their team and gets to keep the ball.
This year John Irving gave the Uppies the first win of the series in a relatively short 90 minute game.
