      At the end of the day what that 7 k is buying is consistency and comfort. Yes on the tracer you can likely record a single lap that is equal to the expensive thing, but its going to be more draining to do it, and you are going to have trouble staying on that pace for a long session.

      My main concern is framerate as a factor in online racing. The other would be connection speed. These are the factors budget and computer system/hardware smarts should optimize ?? Driving skills are certainly the most important single factor. But framerates and connection speeds would be where I would spend money and then look at levels of immersion but these being more experience-enhancing and less a factor in top percentile lap times. Comments on this? Thanks!

    My first ever wheel was something comparable to this Tracer: no FF whatsoever, 180 degrees rotation. It was some very old Logitech, can't even remember the model - I bought it for 50PLN, which was ~13-14 pounds at the time. I had very similar issues with it as Jimmer, but that old and crappy thing got me into simracing. And I can confirm, that gear isn't everything. When I finally bought something better, which was Logitech Driving Force GT, I wasn't immediately faster, but more consistent and more importantly - more confident behind the wheel. Now I have a G29, and don't really feel the need to buy anything better, mostly because of the $$$ 😁

    This is the best message, equipment wont make you faster that one is on you. I remember seeing those very expensive Wheels setups been used for GPL back in the early days of PC sims Force feedback had still to arrive . those first wheels used elastic to give some feel.
      But I to picked up some cheap and nasty wheel no FFB total plastic rubbish sometime around 1998 for my PS1 it was horrid.
      That was before I moved onto my first PC , spending the first few years using a Joystick Microsoft Sidewinder none FFB for GPL and Grand Prix 3 , only later picking up a Thrustmaster Ferrari wheel and Pedals FFB .

    Nailed it with consistency. I went from a G29 and floor stand in an armchair to DD1 and full rig. Certainly, initially, I wasn't any faster (sad face) but quickly became more consistent, which meant fewer spins and errors, which helped overall race time. And with the greater fidelity from a fancy setup I could learn more and ultimately be faster. Worth noting that with a nicer setup it's also a nicer way to spend time...
    Advice for those with lower spec setups - get your contact points sorted. I bought an H pattern and upgraded it (stiffness and shift knob), mounted the pedals a bit more upright and firmly, added stiffer springs, and braced the floor stand so there was no flex. All this helped make the experience better and more consistent on the G29.
    In fact @Jimmy, it would be a great series of vids to do a ground-up basic build and do ebay upgrades etc to make the rig a better setup, you could do pedal springs, mounting, H pattern upgrades, handbrake upgrades etc... it would make for good viewing, and I don't think it's been done by any other mainstream YT'er.

    You're talking at 13:52 about the rigs and how a cheap one does not really make you slower. I believe the question 'Which is faster?' no longer matters very much, anyway. What matters is which rig gives you the closest experience to real life, because software is constantly evolving towards emulating reality and will probably be getting pretty close to doing it perfectly over the next years/decades if that is what developers and the market want. But a cheap wheel with plastic pedals will be a waste on such a simulator.
    In the early 2000s, I was driving NFS Porsche Unleashed with a Thrustmaster Enzo wheel and it was a great experience. But a similar wheel today, with rFactor 2 or even Assetto Corsa, would not be able to capture all the realism the devs put into the behaviour of the cars.

Oh, and the gear changer paddles had both broken off after a few months of use.

    Proves the point, that the gear is of secondary importance, but the driver IS, what makes it count. And yes, I have seen people qualify for IRL money tournaments with GAMEPADS, but a wheel will add a lot more consistency to your laps and the things, that will actually make you go faster, albeit only a little, are good, responsive pedals and decent force feedback. I have EASILY beaten my gamepad times in literally ANY racegame, using the G29 and I only had it for 3 weeks... still not all the settings to perfection... project cars is finally playable, compared to a gamepad (but I am an old and crap scrub)

    You are absolutely spot on. Played withan xbox 360 controller and I could keep pace with people on wheels. Now I have a cheapo wheel and have gotten 5 seconds slower. It feels like relearning everything again. But is so much fun.

    In the world of musicians (mostly guitarists) there’s always people who think that better gear = better playing, but that’s never the case. Just like you proved here, better equipment might get you in the zone faster but it’s the people who practice the most that achieve the highest

    yes, you probably will go almost as quickly, but thats not why you buy it
    you buy it because you like it, it feels great and it gives you fun. and thats all that matters in the end

    Get yourself a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel from Ebay instead and enjoy a pretty _serviceable_ wheel for relatively cheap. Just don't forget to turn the FFB frequency down in ACC and you're golden. Yes, it's old, no, it's not gonna compete with a 400 bucks Logitech or something, but for 16 bucks you have a wheel that still holds up and drives like a 90 bucks wheel.

    I agree that you need to actually be fast and that more expensive equipment won't necessarily make you faster.. Consistent laps and catching slides is where more expensive gear definitely shines. In AC I've wrecked so many times at a certain corner of a certain track and I've seen DD's literally help save a streamer from wrecking at the same corner. For immersion though DD wins hands down and so do loadcell pedals

    Great content. Chris Haye also came to similar conclusions. It would be super interesting though if you had a complete newbie and tried to teach him to be fast on cheap gear vs proper rig. I think that would be a real gap.
    If you are experienced you are more proactive, know what to expect from a car with given inputs whereas a total newbie would be (that is my guess ofc) completely lost. Proper rig would make it easier to not fight with the car.

    Try out some budget wheels, like I have some old thrustmaster without a name, It is still being made, and costs around 70eur in Latvia. The wheel has great pedals for the price and it has auto centering, so at least there is some resistance when turning the wheel

  • @SewerShark
    @SewerShark 3 роки тому

    You should try to adjust the wheel gamma to make it non-linear, so the wheel is less twitchy towards the centre

  • @felipekfcosta
    @felipekfcosta 3 роки тому

    You probably don't need to map the wheel to 100% of the car's steering. Actually I think I rarely turn more than 90°, so if you configure the wheel to something close to 1:1 or maybe 1:1.5, it will be a lot better. Also, you obviously can calibrate it to solve that centering issue

  • @ZX3000GT1
    @ZX3000GT1 3 роки тому

    Seems that less linearity is needed for TRacer, especially since there's much less rotation (180° instead of presumably 900° max).
