  • Will EXPENSIVE sim racing gear actually make you faster? This is a question that is on everyone's mind, every time they buy expensive sim racing gear such as load cell pedals and direct drive wheel bases. Today I raced against a PRO sim racing coach to try and find that answer out for myself.
    Thanks to @SuellioAlmeida for taking part!

    Great video. I think with sim racing there's a lower tier of products that I see very fast drivers use like the T300RS. The returns in lap time start to diminish quite quickly after that level of product. One thing I do think can make you quicker and something I always recommend to people is load cell pedals. There's so much time to be gained under braking it's not funny and load cell pedals give you a slight advantage as you'll be much more accurate with pressure than you can be with pedal distance traveled.

    • @TheCarDoc1
      @TheCarDoc1  11 місяців тому +3

      100% load cell pedals are a must. I think we must be getting to the time soon where they’ll be cheap enough to be entry level!

    Suellio makes some great points about breaking in game and I'd have to agree.
    That being said, all of that is missing when you use a controller.
    People laugh at me, when I tell them, to understand racing (just driving even), you first have to learn how to ride a bike.
    Understanding the physics, of rotating two thin points of grip, without completely spinning out and eating it, gives you the foundation needed to control powered vehicles.
    The first time I drove, was an auto minivan on gravel, around the age of 11/12. I knew long pedal was gas and short pedal was break, took the concepts from riding my bike on different surfaces and went.
    Now I take that all, project it onto what I'm interpreting from the sim and hope it translates through the controller. Here's where you have to think like Ray about it... it's just "way she goes" because in real life, the accidents I've had are always down to 3 factors: #1 focus/tiredness/other energy #2 something new I've never experienced/new or changing environment #3 Mechanical/structural/other events outside my control.
    In sim, the only time I'm not spinning out or crashing, is when I'm completely focused.
    I love racing. It's been a part of my life, for as long as I can remember. But unfortunately, I can't make my brain care enough to complete my billionth lap around digital Laguna Seca. Wheel or no wheel, pedals or controller.
    And it's not a entitlement thing either, I'm rabid to get in a sim any time I have to go without my own.
    It's literally: "Brain see computer image, no threat detected. Simulation of time exhausting and boring."
    Then two seconds later:
    "Brain can't care, so Brain spinning car... Brain unhappy with Brain, because Brain spin car."

    My guess is that’s it’s all matter of getting used to what you use. The brakes can make you quicker because of bigger feel of braking like Suellio said. I’ve upgraded from a TMX Pro to à Moza R9 bundle with load cells and for the moment I don’t feel quicker than I was. What I noticed is that I’m much more confident and consistent on braking. The wheel information detail of oversteering and understeering helps me a lot to brake later and stronger. Other than that it’s all up to how your used to it.

    Both doods probably did not run nordschleife enough to cleanly race it. 😂 You need to memorize the inconsistencies in the road as well since it can potentially ruin the run. Small bumps here and there especially those cars are faster there are times that track is causing lift underneath.
    But I guess it's also not a good track for the comparison.

    now i feel bad about my g29

    • @luciusesox1luckysox570
      @luciusesox1luckysox570 11 місяців тому

      Really don't. I just sold my G29 for just over a third of the price I paid for it 18 months ago. I bought a Fanatec CSL DD, Mclaren Wheel and a set of Fanatec load cell pedals plus some bits. With shipping to the UK it cost me the best part of a £1000 as opposed to the three hundred I paid for the G29. I had modified the brake pedal on the G29 using a very high density rubber to simulate a load cell. This was in May. I would say that the pedals make only a slight difference because once properly set up (I took a lot of care to get it right) the G29 one's can work very well. I had no brake pedal movement until I applied real pressure and I set the input in the software to match. It has taken me until now to see my lap times appreciably lowering but, and it is a big one, because I invested so much cash in the Fanatec setup I also invested more of the real "magic" ingredient as well ..... practice. I really am not sure what is making me go faster but I have a suspicion it is practice.
      I watch a UA-camr called Jardier a lot and if your into sim racing you should check him out. He races in ACC mostly and against very high tier opponents and does very well having won various championships himself in the past. One of his contemporaries who is a also of a very high skill level and is very fast is a young teenager called Goldsaw, he drives at alien speeds..... He uses a controller !
      I feel your pain but this guy makes us all feel bad.
      Enjoy your G29 they are a great little wheel and you can pick up some incredible second hand bargains like my old one ..:(
