The Story of the JHS Morning Glory

  • I've always thought that I'd done a really good job at preserving the JHS history, even though we’ve been in business now for over a decade and a lot has happened. But upon putting this episode together about the Morning Glory, I’ve realized that I'm part of the problem. It’s true. I didn’t keep records on this stuff like I should have. There's something about when you're busy doing the thing, you don't remember the thing.**
    **Fairly sure Abraham Lincoln said that in the 1960s.
    That said, I'm going to do my best today to show you how the Morning Glory happened, the more or less complete history of this pedal, and I’m going to include all the nerdy details that I can, because that’s what I do.

      @@schooldya. weird. I never thought of these drums as "loud". Maybe because I've played with truly loud drummers over the years. I think everything sits well considering there isn't even bass. Besides, I like having an idea of how the use of an effect sits in the mix. That almost doesn't happen in other reviews.

    When I was in my first year of college, 2012, in Mexico City, i went to a small boutique guitar shop with some friends. I remember a small glass showcase with some weird pedals that only had small drawings on them, no text. I fell in love immediately. I played a double barrel and a moring glory and I was in love but they were just too expensive for me. 12 years later I have a recording studio, several jhs pedals and yesterday my wife came back from a business trip to the US and brought me a morning glory as a surprise. Its awesome to witness history in the making and to be a tiny part of this great company's history. Thanks for everything Josh.

    you know what? this show is produced pretty damn well. it has a nice aesthetic to both its cadence and general vibe. The cuts and wipes are really becoming their own thing, familiar, yet each episode seems authentically real-time, ad-lib and story time-like. The show looks fluid, the music is good, the fidelity is nice, the product, no doubt is on another level, record time. Nice job, keep it up guys - the community appreciates.

    This is the first boutique pedal I had ever heard of. I was 17, and I had a friend who was a brilliant player and a really kind person. At the time I had a TS overdrive and a Wah, and didn’t know much of anything about pedals. He actually let me borrow his board for a week to let me really see what a pedalboard was like and to try things out! The Morning Glory has stuck with me ever since as one of the best overdrive pedals I’ve ever played (He also had a dynacomp so those two together were a lot of fun!)

  • @gabrielledebourg2487
    @gabrielledebourg2487 4 роки тому +3

    I have a Morning Glory on my board, because of all the overdrive pedals I've played, it's my favorite. I use a Victory VC35 "The Copper", which is a Vox style amp and the Morning Glory just brings out all of that chime and clarity in the amp, without every getting shrill or harsh. I hear people calling the Morning Glory a "transparent" overdrive, but that's just untrue: because it doesn't sound like your amp overdriving - it sounds like you wish your amp sounded like when it was overdriving!
    It's one of those pedals I just bonded with instantly, so seeing a rundown of it here was nothing short of a treat!

    I use the Double Barrel V4 on my board. The versatility is huge and the tones are numerous. UA-cam was where i learned of JHS. It was numerous channel's, including yours. Likely Dan and Mick is where i first learned of the Morning Glory. I then bought the Calhoun V2, Angry Charlie V4, and Pulp n Peel V4. These will likely be on the board forever as well. They are top shelf stuff.

      The Double Barrel is one of the best pedals out there period. I own and have owned way too many overdrives and the Double Barrel always stood out as one of the best for sure. The clean blend really makes it quite unique as well. I love the AT circuit too. Always wanted a Pulp N Peel but once a bought a Cali76 I didn’t really think I needed another compressor because it’s pretty much the perfect compressor, completely transparent with endless sustain but I still want to buy a Pulp N Peel because I know I’ll use it and it’s good to change things up sometimes.

      Great pedal. Before I knew about the Double Barrel I had my coworker at Guitar Center build me a Morning Glory into a Mad Professor Little Green Wonder as a dual overdrive but I requested separate DC jacks because I don't like drives getting under 9v.
      This was amazing, it was actually made by the guy who started Coppersound Pedals. After 2 years of heavy gigging the switches had some trouble but that's my fault.
      These days I use a Morning Glory with a EQD Palisades just to have a few more options without any extra EQ.

    • @jordandangelo180
      @jordandangelo180 4 роки тому

      Shawn McVey wow that custom pedal sounds incredibly cool. I use a Palisades as well. I also use an King of Tone which I’ve really leaned to love over the past year. I also own a King Tone Duellist and a Blues Power but after playing all those great pedals, the one that sounded the best after A/B’ing all of them, to my ear, was the Vertex Ultra Phonix. It just sounded so beefy and perfect and had a super unique sound way different from the rest which unfortunately all kind of sounded a little too similar. The Ultra Phonix HRM is another insanely good pedal with a master volume on it. Those pedals just sing man I can’t describe it. I do love the Morning Glory as well but I think the Dumble style overdrive is really where it’s at, at least for me.

Josh owning all sorts of one-off pedals from long-dead pedal companies and yet not keeping his own early pedals kind of (sort of, nearly) fits with the same idea. Or possibly not.

I owned a Takamine GX-200 since I was 14. I never owned a pedal and I am 51. My coworker suggested a few videos you did. Your videos are very well done and entertaining. I watched this video today because he asked me after a job if I watched the current JHS video on the Morning Glory! I'm not a real player. I like trying and love great sounds. Got the use of my arms back a few years back after a neck surgery. So I can't do allot of playing but enough to have fun. I now own four guitars and ten pedals. Currently eyeing a few of yours. I first learned about JHS when I was doing research on my first pedalboard build. I was looking for information on fuzz applications and came upon an early fuzz-centric episode of the JHS Show I believe when it was still the JHS Vlog. Was immediately hooked on the content and watched everything I could find from the channel until I’d seen it all twice. It’s to the point that my wife, who has never watched intentionally, can occasionally be heard humming a random jam from the show completely on her own with no prompting. Fast forward to today and my pedalboard looks like I’m sponsored by JHS.

  • @richieworrell
    @richieworrell 4 роки тому +1

    I first heard about the Morning Glory because of Roy and Todd from MUTEMATH. In every rig rundown video those two did on UA-cam explaining their gear and tone, they both raved constantly about the Morning Glory. At the time I couldn't afford to buy the real thing, but I was so inspired by Josh and the DIY roots of JHS pedals that I thought "wow maybe I could just build my own". So that's exactly what I did - I found a schematic of the Morning Glory online and built my own, and it's been on my board ever since. I know it's not the real thing and I didn't give JHS any money for mine (sorry Josh), but I did learn how to build pedals because of that experience and it has been a joy building them ever since. Not only did I get a killer pedal out of it, but a lifelong hobby. So thank you JHS!

    From 2008 to 2017 I was honored to be playing with numerous worship music guitarists, and everyone had to have their own special pedal boards, preferably with pedals no one else had (there's a lot of snobbery in the pedal world). Everyone had a Full-Drive2, some had an OCD, some lucky ones had a Timmy, then a new pedal started showing up... the JHS Morning Glory. At $199 it was quite a bit more money than most other OD pedals back then, so it was still pretty rare and "boutique" at the time. Before long it became one of the more sought after pedals because it just does the transparent light break up thing so darn well.
    Even though worship guitarists get a lot of bad rap, some deservedly, they're probably the biggest market driving all the new pedals we get to enjoy these days. I mean, when I was young all we had were gross DOD pedals and the infamous Metal Zone.

    First off, from this moment on when my family or friends ask ‘What do you mean by tone?’ I’m sending them a link to this video. Well played Josh and Nick! Second, I first heard of JHS after watching TPS segment on Plexi drives. Heard the Charlie Brown and it was the exact sound I was seeking - plus the joy they had playing it was the clincher for me. Lastly, thanks for always kicking off my weekends with your videos. It’s like church on Sundays - only the music is more my style.

    Man, great episode, Josh. I’ve been wanting a Morning Glory since probably around 2013 and I finally nabbed a Double Barrel on Reverb this week. I had a Moon Shine on my board for a while a few years ago but didn’t know how to get the right sound out of it and ended up selling it. Stacked with a Morning Glory, the screamer circuit really rounds out my tone, and I couldn’t be happier with the tone. I thought I would prefer the MG before the MS, but found that I like having the MS first in the chain. Thanks for putting out so many great pedals and for all you do to educate people on how to best use them. This is literally my favorite channel on UA-cam right now.
    Great record time too. Wonder wall was one of the first songs I learned to play on acoustic and it was always a crowd pleaser.

    Bought a double barrel on Wednesday, my first overdrive pedal ever (relied on my trusty little modeling amp for dirt until now). I can’t believe how much inspiration it’s been giving me in these few days. I can’t stop playing, it sounds so good, and the riffs keep pouring in! All I do now is dial in the cleanest amp sound I have, turn on the pedal, and it just gives me golden tones galore! It’s phenomenal and makes me so happy. The only problem is I can’t settle on just one setting, every thing I try sounds so AMAZEBALLS. Epic first pedal buy.

    Josh- I’m sorry, but Oasis only made 1 decent album, which was “Definitely Maybe”. I’m sorry to have to break it to you. Oasis were just nosediving from ego cocaine and brotherly love all through the 90’s. While I do like Blur, Pulp is the true king of the Britpop scene, followed closely by Suede then Lush. I hope we can still be friends. I do love your pedals though.

    • @Steaminlidz
      @Steaminlidz 4 роки тому +1

      Lush? Lush were a dreadful 2nd wave shoegaze band that popped back up, changed direction and jumped on the bandwagon when Britpop became popular. Their original contemporaries like Adorable and Chapterhouse at least had the humility to stay dead when that scene collapsed in on itself. (Even Ride had a crack at the Britpop thing, but didn’t make it stick).

    Josh, I have a lot of overdrives from high end pedals to boutique pedals to general staple pedals. I play mainly a Gibson Les Paul and Marshall amps. Many of my OD pedals sound good or even great, but I could never find that "one" that matched up perfectly with my LP and Marshall. I just got the Morning Glory V4 tonight. Finally, that itch has been scratched. Thank You!
