OBSCURA Ten Sepiroth Reaction
Fretless bass is VERY common in this genre. Beyond Creation, Death, Obscura, one of the Inferi albums...all great.
Cynic with Sean Malone RIP :( ua-cam.com/video/hq_DiR5frEA/v-deo.html
Bro I was just thinking while watching this that I need to go listen to some Beyond Creation and Inferi after jamming more Obscura. It’s been too long
Which of the Inferi albums had fretless?
@@ZuccAF Revenant
So, not that common then.
Archspire: Involuntary Doppelgänger. You’d get your mind blown. One of the best recorded metal albums I’ve heard in a while.
Also, Obscura: Dilluvium.
Man back when concerts were a thing, that was lineup I saw- Obscura, Archspire, also Beyond Creation, Inferi. What a show
I’d give my left nut to see that show
Second that
get some Job For a Cowboy-Stone Cross in there too
Involuntary Doppelgänger is a great song, but it doesn't really show off their compositional skills so much as just their musicianship. I feel like A Dark Horizontal or Relentless Mutation better demonstrates their capabilities.
@@gabrielchad447 I agree. I think I was just thinking of one that’s off that album, because it’s fresh and hopefully he’ll watch something of theirs. A dark horizontal, Human Murmuration, relentless mutation are fucking amazing.
Obscura's "Akroasis" album is a masterpiece! One of best albuns in this genre.
You should try Beyond Creation's Earthborn Evolution next.
2 of the greatest albums of the 2010's!
If BC had continued in the style of those first 2 albums, they would be on the verge of overtaking Death as my favourite band
@@bcbitchkkv Akroasis and diluvium are the best imo
@@christiangramg_hifi I envy you. While I LOVE Emergent Evolution and Convergence (and really like a handful more songs) there's a few Diluvium songs that really bore me. Meanwhile, I can listen through Omnivium or Akroasis from start to finish any day, without hesitating.
Archspire - Relentless Mutation is another really insanely good and technical track.
This is giving me hope that you might react to Beyond Creation - Earthborn Evolution :)
Yes! Best Tech Metal song ever
That's good one for sure!
I was gonna recommend that song too🤟
One of my favorite bands!
THIS ^^^ Lucky enough to see them play it live and wow...
Speaking of fretless, i think you should hear Steve Di Giorgio's work on Death. Always, great videos!!
Absolutely. I'd recommend Destiny off of Individual Thought Patterns as a good showcase of his talent.
This! 🤘🏻
I'm waiting for Spawn Of Possession - The Apparition.
From Obscura I can recommend you "Velocity" with its interesting solo.
Funny thing... Christian Münzner is the "lead" guitarist for both songs. I also want these two songs for that reason haha.
I know that. He is a great musician and I love his contributions to metal music.
@@ProgHead89 ironically - Christian’s not the lead guitarist on both songs :D
Florian Magnus Maier aka “Morean” - the vocalist/guitarist in Alkaloid recorded the mind blowing solo on ‘Velocity’ :)
Bryssling's writing on Spawn of Possession is leagues beyond most other tech death.
Fun fact: The leader guitar "Fountainhead" use a fretless guitar too in this album. Amazing musicians.
Never heard this song or band before but what a sick song. Time to sit on Spotify all day
I recommend listening to Universe Momentum, Vortex Omnivium, Septuagint, Ethereal Skies, Ekpyrosis, Diluvium, Choir of Spirits, Perpetual Infinity, Weltseele and Ocean Gateways.
This should get you started out with Obscura.
Enjoy!
@@lashedandscorned also Noospheres, Prismal Dawn, Aevum, anticosmic Overload.. Also take a listen to Spawn Of Possession- The Evangelist. Top TDM bands.
Fretless Bass in metal music? Please do a Cynic reaction! Sean Malone is a wonderful bass player and the whole band managed to give us wonderful albums that crossed genres in a masterful way!
A defining characteristic of technical death metal is fretless bass, and when the guitars (sometimes vocals) switch in to the rhythm section so the bass can lead the melody. It's awesome, and Riccardo is 100% correct, you gotta do a Cynic song! "Veil of Maya" or "How Could I?" would show off the bass, but Evolutionary Sleeper is my favourite song :)
dont forget steve digiorgio and all his projects. i think this guy started all that fretless bass in metal stuff
@@nikomangelmann6054 i love that he changes the type of bass he uses between songs live, he is a Bass Monster
RIP Sean Malone :(
Yeah, I wish some composer reactor out there would do Gordian Knot.
ORIGIN - staring from the abyss
check out "A Dark Horizontal" by Archspire. I feel like their composition is really impressive and that song does a really good job of demonstrating that.
Definitely a better fit for his type of reactions than Involuntary Doppelganger, at least to start..
Love that you're back!
Rivers of Nihil- Subtle Change (Including the Forest of Transition and Dissatisfaction Dance)
Cynic- How Could I? or I'm But a Wave to...
Car Bomb- Scattered Sprites or Constant Sleep
Cynic. Everything from them is wonderful, this channel is the perfect place for their songs
CYNIC. I love Sean Malone and Sean Reinert so so so much
@@riccardocravero3614 Couldn’t agree more.
CYNIC
Great suggestions! I second all of these.
Gorguts - Enemies of Compassion
Great suggestion! I really would like to see him react to some more dissonant side of tech-death.
Nostalgia was my pick
In case you didn't pick it up (haven't watched till the end yet), the guitar SOLO (10:23) is on a FRETLESS guitar, on top of the band using fretless bass :D
Courtesy of Tom "Fountainhead" Geldschläger, incredible player!
Also: THANK YOU for reacting to new, COOL music like tech death! There's so many who lose their shit to Nightwish etc, but the real mind blowing stuff is in tech death and prog metal, and the aforementioned genre gets so little love, it's too bad! When people can get over the growling, they realize how amazing the music is!
BEYOND CREATION - FUNDAMENTAL PROCESS or THE AURA should be up next for you, TRUST ME!! :)
Earthborn Evolution would be another good choice.
@@lashedandscorned I had to stop myself at some point, and try to keep it SOMEWHAT short, haha :D
I've seen people hear "Earthborn", so I'm really hoping for Fundamental or The Aura, even though EE is a masterpiece (such tasty tapping and blasts)
@@bcbitchkkv Fair.
All three of them are great songs.
Really hope you get back to Caligula's Horse. Either Bloom + Marigold, or Graves. Very underrated band and you will love these songs!
Graves is honestly in my top 5 favorite songs of all time, such a masterful song.
Graves is a wonderful song, I would love to see a reaction!
Daughter of the Mountain, tho
add Salt to that list please!
Also Beyond Creation is a legitimately good band to react to too. Fundamental Process, Earthborn Evolution, Coexistence, The Afterlife, Abstrait Dialog or basically any song from their second album Earthborn Evolution.
THANK YOU! Someone who recommends the interesting songs, not just "Omipresent Perception" for the thousandth time :D
The Aura, Fundamental Process, The Deported and Earthborn Evolution.. too many masterpieces on those first 2 albums
Yes!
Dude...Beyond Creation! These guys changed my mind about tech death!
@@bcbitchkkv The Deported! Yes!! Pure eargasm
@@pasel87 And that final scream, holy shit..!
The song right before this on the album (Akroasis, the title track) is one of my favorite Obscura songs ever!
Obscura, and another Canadian techdeath band, Beyond Creation, are TOP-SHELF!! Also Archspire comes to mind... wait'll you hear their vocals!!
Would looooooove an archspire reaction
Beyond Creation - Omnipresence Perception / Earthborn Evolution (The bass is incredible af)
also first fragment. original bass player from beyond creation
@@kingkush4201ify 'gula' is a great one!
I love when you react to some of my favorite Metal that I know another channel that does this reaction videos won't even care. You should do Gorguts next.
I love seeing your reactions when these bands, that I've been listening to for years, whip out a riff, beat, or bass line that blows you away. Your face says OMGWTF, and I think "Just wait for it."
Love it!
Please do First Fragment - L'entité
Beyond Creation -Earthborn evolution has some beautiful fretless bass solos
And now please do a song from the album that they inspired their style and even took their name from: Gorguts - Obscura. Gorguts is one of the most INSANE bands ever, it was boundary pushing and so incredibly well composed yet so harrowing and disorienting with it's bizarre technicality and complexity. Please try Gorguts - Nostalgia
I do love that album, but I feel like it'd be a bit rough. 😅 Might be a good idea to ease into it with something off Colored Sands, and THEN hit the Obscura album as a comparison. An Ocean of Wisdom or Forgotten Arrows, maybe.
@@StvKln Though I'd usually agree, this is Geebz, I think he'll appreciate it, because of the bizarre composition. I think he can handle it. Although, that might be an overstatement.
Beyond Creation - Omnipresent Perception
there's some great fretless bass in the same genre
Could you listen to this? I am really curious what would your thoughts be
*Ulcerate - Withered and Obsolete*
Oh absolutely, Ulcerate is a band that's really worth checking out, and their albums are all different. One I would really want a react on is Gorguts - Pleaides' Dust, really interested in his thoughts on it. And also Ad Nauseam - Imperative Imperceptible Impulse is another majestic to react to.
@@petergjata1498 just recommended ad nauseam’s tech as well. Their album blew me away this year!!
I would think something from Destroyers or SIDABS might be a bit more interesting to pull apart. EIF is a classic album, but the band were still more of angular riff fest then. Something with a more focused melodic and atmospheric sense might be a little more gripping to analyse.
Stare into death and be still is an absolutely brilliant album. I can stop listening to it
You should decompose Nile - Cast down the heretic from the album Annihilation of the wicked.
The guitar solo on it is an emotional rollercoaster :)
Fun fact: That noise at 2:31 isn’t a voice going “oo wooooo”. It’s a harmonic on that sexy sexy fretless bass
For real?
Yeah for real, that's just one of the awesome things you can do with a fretless bass
Oh and a second rhythm guitar (and solo guitar too) which provides harmonies to main riffs is 7-string fretless on this album. Watch Fountainhead's playthrough of Sermon of the Seven Suns to hear and see all the crazy shenanigans he's doing on this album. Very creative.
Another vote for beyond creation. They influenced me to switch to fretless in my progressive instrumental metal project.
AWWWRIGHT!! Another GREAT progressive techdeath band to check out is Equipoise... the bass is super pronounced in the mix, and I think you'll most certainly dig it!
Is the same bassist for beyond creation too
@@Otero3D isn't Hugo on bass for BC?
@@metalgt6828 yep and equipoise and brought by pain, hahahahahaha
Keep reacting to Obscura! I recommend Septuagint, Akroasis, Universe Momentum, Vortex Omnivium, Sermon of the Seven Suns, Incarnated, Noospheres, Fractal Dimensions, Diluvium. Oh, I think I've said too much.
Vortex Omnivium and Noospheres are a MUST,not that the rest mentioned are lacking in any way \m/
@@DBZ666Dante Noosphere is such an underrated song, alongside Perpetual Infinity! Atmosphere that "goes even further beyond" ;)
@@bcbitchkkv i knoooow! you can feel the atmosphere
@@DBZ666Dante If you haven't already, check out the live version of Perpetual Infinity from a gig in New Zealand. Bootleg quality, but the few alterations they did live (distorted instead of clean guitar in some places) sounds so damn GOOD!
"OBSCURA @ Valhalla, Wellington NZ - 1 April 2019" 47:46 into the video :)
@@bcbitchkkv Perpetual Infinity is awesome.
also hi again lol
so glad to see you reacting to this!
I’d highly recommend Pleiades Dust by the band Gorguts. The song is around 30 minutes long and is filled with ebbs and flows. A masterpiece
That beat switch melted your mind! Hahaha I love watching your reactions to new songs, genuine pure reactions!
Aloha buddy, I hope you get to Night Verses, absolutely beautiful instrumental stuff with one of the most creative sounds around right now. Guaranteed chicken skin . Stay genuine bro
I keep watching your reaction and analysis of Obscura over and over! I love how the songs starts and I can see on your face how many thoughts on going on in your head. Would love to see you react to more Obscura!
That was a fantastic song and a fantastic breakdown, thanks Geebz!
I've been waiting so long for you to do this song! Thank you! Dat some stinky base :P
The pinnacle of this genre is Virvum. Change my mind.
Akroasis, Omnivium, Epitaph, Earthborn Evolution, The Aura, Immersion, Revenant, Entropy: Of Chaos & Salt, Laniakea and Illuminance are all up there :')
Virvum are fantastic, definitely a must on this channel
Alkaloid>virvum all day
Awesome!! I love Obscura, and so glad you appreciate their musicianship! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
oooooooof you are in for a treat with anything obscura, specially their instrumentals
Congrats on 150k!
Any Obscura song is a great choice. So many elements to unpack in their music. The title track from this album - Akroasis - is one of the best songs in the genre in my opinion
The only thing better than your decomposing is the way you show us your coffee.. love how genuine you are man
if you like obscura this much, check out their main influences: Death and Cynic. i recommend Symbolic and Textures respectively
The song Sermon Of The Seven Suns has a FRETLESS GUITAR SOLO
16:43 - pinch harmonics is the word
It tickles me that you're going down the tech-death rabbithole. Lots of great suggestions already, Beyond Creation, Necrophagist, Cynic. I'll add Gorod, perhaps the song "Disavow your God". If you want more Obscura, my suggestion is "Vortex Omnivium". They also have several very clear playthroughs on here if interested.
+archspire :)
I was totally thinking Necrophagist too! 🤘🏻
Please, please do Selkies, White Walls or Silent Flight Parliament by BTBAM 🙏🙏🙏
Colors II!!!!!
Perfect video to watch on my lunch break today!
So happy that you got around to Obscura.
You have gotten to so many of my favorite bands already, but I have to ask once more that you check out Bent Knee!!
Any of their live stuff from the newest album that was performed at Big Nice Studios.
Love your content as always, Geebz.
Awwright!!
Congrats for going here. Much respect.
Thats a good one to analyze. Good amount of goosebumps too :D
In this gendra, you would probably like the band Beyond Creation! Technical and bass is also prominent.
Obscura still released a couple more songs after this too.
Obscura is next level, one song is only scratching the surface of the things these guys are capable of
I've given a lot of thanks for what you do, so I just want to comment in case it helps your algorithm. And thank you for the exposure to different music.
I love deathmetal and metal like this, and I never thought I'd find a great song I'd like coming from your channel
at 2:29, your reaction was priceless to the bass making that noise.
It made my soul happy that you have come to appreciate the growls. Welcome to the "growl" side of life, brother. So much emotion and such big sounds....by restriction and tongue/soft palette placement. Practicing belts actually made me a better singer as well. So much skill to effortlessly switch and combine singing to screaming. You have so much more to dive into here, especially because you dont pay attention to lyrics first, just vocals as instrument. Screaming is almost percussion and chord at same time.
Basically the rock scene looked at all of the instruments (including voice) and said "what else can we do with these things?" Some of the metal lyrics can get super dark...dont be turned away if you do read some.....theres some really great, unique stuff tho. You really are the Decomposer, you metal man, you.
Fretless bass and fretless guitar on this album!
Great song!!! Great Review!! 🤟
Beyond Creation - "Omnipresent Perception"
The time is now. ;)
One of my favorite bands 😎👌
Love how you respect all aspects of the composition including the bass which is to often overlooked.
Lovely to see you not only understanding this type of music but genuinely getting goosebumps and enjoying it. I'd recommend something from Diluvium, which I'd say is more cohesively written. Mortification of the Vulgar Sun, The Conjuration or Epilogue to Infinity (my personal favourite). Keep doing what you do!
It's cool to see the reaction of a person with your background when the song starts and you start dissecting it. I can see on your face when your brain goes to high gear on a song like this.
Sebastian Lanser is a supremely gifted drummer.
Great react again, as always ! I like the way you re exploring different kind of metal and music in general.
I would recommend you to have a look on King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, very very interesting composition and ingeneering
The bassist, Linus Klausenitzer, is the son of a classical violinist/conductor and professor. He's the bassist of Alkaloid, too, which is also just wild for the bass work!
Linus is the bassist for Obsidious and Noneuclid too.
Have you heard about the upcoming Alkaloid album?
Or the Obsidious debut?
I can't fucking wait.
@@lashedandscorned Yep. My body is ready. New Obscura (minus Rafael, Linus, and Sebastian) is also coming soon.
@@anoptforout Yeah I know about Obscura.
With Christian and Jeroen back the next album is going to be pretty fucking epic.
First Fragment is releasing new shit too.
Allllrrriighttt Obscura!! 🥳
I agree the low end is the cradle of the soul
Another example of this caliber of playing is the band Allegaeon. They do a wonderful cover of Roundabout that I know you’d enjoy.
Seriously dude, that video reaction is EPIC!!! I'm so glad you got to Obscura. There is so much going on in their music if one can get over the growling, just like you do. I hope you do some more of their songs. Anything from Akroasis or Dilluvium, those are the 2 proggiest albums of their discography. Obviously the bass playing is a major part of this band, I knew your brand would melt with that fretless sound. If you need some more fretless in your metal I highly suggest you check out Angra. They use fretless basses in some of their songs. They play some south american ethnic prog metal. Omni Silence Inside is a prime example of their sound. Keep it up man!!!
Ah! I've been waiting for another tech death reaction! I love your takes. Would love to see you hear Inferi - Behold the Bearer of Light. Very much in the same vein, but a bit more symphonic/orchestral. Keep it up!!
Krallice - Dimensional Bleedthrough
Fuck yes, I've been waiting for this.
Do Vortex Omnivium next please.
First Fragment
GOROD
The Faceless
GOROD
Spawn of Possession
GOROD
Nevermore
GOROD
Opeth
The Zenith Passage
The Ritual Aura
Oh and maybe GOROD🤘
Yes yes yes perfect pick live that one
Brand New Band for me too Geebz. Sweet. 🤘. It is fun adding bands to my playlist too 🙂
Check out Beyond Creation and Persefone...
@@metalgt6828 I do know Beyond Creation but I don't know the other. BC is CRAZY 😲
Just add Obscura's entire fucking discography to your playlist at this point lmao.
I suggest you check out First Fragment, Intonate, and Alkaloid.
@@adamhenton6221 aaaand Irreversible Mechanism (First album = mindblowing tech shredfuckery. Second album = tech+atmospheric masterpiece)
Virvum - Illuminance
Hannes Grossmann - Apophenia (ex-Necrophagist & Obscura drummer, crazy multi-talented musician)
The Beast of Nod - Vampiria: Disciple of Chaos (a guitarist's wet dream)
..and, perhaps a "dark horse" with the melodic death influence, but Bloodshot Dawn - Demons too! Can only be found on UA-cam / CD, though.
Tom Fountainhead is an amazing guitarist!
Weltseele from the same album is the song that really showcases his music.
Thanks for this great video. Obscura is one of my favourite bands, their music is awesome especially the last album. Also you should try Earthborn Evolution by Beyond Creation which is my favourite band of all time.
to my knowledge, the album individual though pattern (1993) by death was the first album to introduce fretless bass in death metal. Death was far ahead of their time.
2 years earlier, same band, same bass player. Death mastermind Chuck Schuldiner hired Paul Masvidal, Sean Reinert & Steve DiGorgio. Released on october 22, 1991, the groundbreaking Human changed death metal forever.
@@obiwanLDK Human was the first death metal album I liked. Before then I was all into thrash but just couldn't handle the extreme vocals. When I first heard Human, the riffs were soo good I couldn't deny them. I don't care what he sings like, I need to listen to this music!
Torche - Slide. Loving that lately
Aloha, Decomposer! I came to comment for the 30 day challenge and recommend/ request the latest Obscura song uploaded today!! I know you were impressed by then and I absolutely love Obscura and your reactions to great music! Awwright!!
These guys are crazy good. You should check out Fractal Universe - A Clockwork Expectation.
Would be really interesting to know a composer point of view for "PERSEFONE - Living Waves"
I love the expression in your face xD
Great video!!
Fractal Universe - Flashes of potentialities
Lmao, you crack me up dude.
Awesome to see this type of stuff! You should do wake up or river of deceit by mad season
So, they have two guitar players. But the mind-blowing thing is, one of them is also the only band's vocalist!
On a similar level of musicmanship, I would definitely recommend Archspire
I would join your patreon if you did that long format analysis/breakdown!
I photographed Obscura with Beyond Creation and Archspire in Philadelphia a few years back. Needless to say, there were _A LOT_ of guitar strings on stage that night.
Wilderun - O Resolution!
PLEASE. ✌️
There's an official video for the track aswell... 😉
It's fretless, ur right about that. And actually it's getting more and more common thing in metal. Bands like, Cynic, Death, Beyond Creation, Soen, First Fragment, Intronaut, Augury.......
I saw Obscura live, it was very tight and very loud. They opened for Cannibal Corpse, Neuraxis and The Faceless. Great show.
still got my fingers crossed for a maximum the hormone reaction
He should just watch death note while he's at it haha
High time you reacted to Blotted Science!
After Ten Sephirot you may like listening to Incarnate by Obscura. Got some nice groove to it.
I know, the bass on that album specifically it´s amazing. Thanks for this reaction video, made my week!
