At the 8:38 mark…”What am I listening too?”…BTBAM answers “Between the Buried and Me!”
Love the react man, give it more listens and go back in their discography and do more reacts on here as you journey through, you’ll gain a whole new appreciation for what your listening too.

Same here. In 2008, my friend showed me Prequel to the Sequel, and I thought it was awful. But I listened to the entire Colors album a few years later, then I went on a deep dive of their entire discography after that. Now they are my favorite band! Though, I will say, Automata II is probably my least favorite album they've released thus far, glad they kinda went back to their roots with Colors II.

As I was watching, there were very few parts that you seemed not to have an instantly enjoyable reaction to. I think the issue is moreso with seeing how it all fits together, and that just come with future listens. I agree with you that their genre fusions can be jarring at first but the more you listen, the weirder you will want it to get, and also, the more cohesive it becomes as you notice the way it's all stitched together - the more parts stick out and cement their place in the album as well. Best regards and I hope you continue to delve into them because they can be musically life changing - I speak from experience. Don't blame you at all for being confused on first listen though. I felt the exact same way when I first heard them.

If I were you, I'd check out Colors 1, Parallax 2 or The Great Miadirect next. The self-titled, silent circus, and Alaska are much more metal focused but they are also incredible records. Starting from Alaska and moving forward is also a good option in my opinion. There's a lot of choices. As I said in the other comment, I envy you and kinda wish I could rediscover them again myself lol.

Can't wait to watch this later! Definitely check out the rest of their discography. Every single album is a uniquely incredible experience.
Just off the bat, I feel like I should clarify that even the most ardent fans never know what to make of their albums on first listen. That's the journey. There's so much that you'll notice every time and it's really fun to pick it all apart with all of the references and easter eggs. It's definitely an acquired taste that's really, really worth acquiring.
I'd maybe try out Colors 1 next to see where this album is coming from.
I'll leave another comment when I watch this later.
Based off of the thumbnail, and the question mark, I'm inclined to expect that the album may have left you bewildered and confused rather than overjoyed, and I get that completely. That's exactly the way I reaction to their music when I first heard it. The more you listen to them the more it seems to come together I think. It's also worth noting that each individual member's personalities come through super strongly in their music. They are goofy guys and their mindset when composing seems to largely be motivated by how fun they can make their compositions. I honestly envy you for all of the material you have in front of you whenever you should choose to check it.
Their earlier albums are very mathcore/death metal oriented and they slowly began to weave in the progressive elements throughout their career.

  • @RanchElder

I had very similar reactions when listening to BTBAM for the first time with their album Parallax II. I didn't get people's obsession with this band.
Years later, after listening to lots of other music and finally returning to relisten, they've become one of my favorite bands. Definitely recommend checking out the rest of their discography (Parallax II is a favorite now!)
Don't worry if it doesn't click for a while; you're not alone! But don't let it dissuade you from trying again in the future, as these guys are certainly among the best.

They are a pretty experimental progressive metal group, but I believe this is their most experimental album release.
Their most accessible album imo is Coma Ecleptic. I feel like it has their most clean vocals as well (Though I haven't sat and ingested Automata 1 and 2 recently, so I could be wrong). But it definitely feels lighter in comparison to their other work (has some heavy elements), and some of the synth music sounds could be weird.
Colors 1 was HUGE at the time, so that wouldn't be a bad next listen after Colors 2. It's also pretty heavy though, as this was the album coming off of Alaska (which is an album that has a lot of metal core elements).
If you want a little more groove in your heavy music, I think The Great Misdirect is a great next listen.
Parallax 1 and 2 offers a very interesting story, and is similar to The Great MIsdirect in terms of musical approach.
So, maybe Colors 1 next. Maybe Coma Ecleptic if you want their most accessible, but also light, progressive metal album. The Great Misdirect if you'd like to keep a healthy amount of heavy elements mixed in.
If you like what you hear after 1-3 more albums, check out Parallax 1+2.
But I don't know. Up to you. :)

@@heavenly_devil91 I disagree. The way colors 1 is written is way more heavy. The majority of the riffs and melodies are heavy and swift, whereas the majorities of melodies and riffs on colors 2 are flowing and evoke more genre pastiches. Colors 1 is metalcore with prog elements, but colors 2 is prog with metalcore moments

At the 21:00 mark or so, those 4 back-to-back drum solos were performed by 4 different drummers:
-Mike Portnoy (probably best known for his work with Dream Theater)
-Navene Koperweis (formerly with Animals as Leaders, now with Machine Head)
-Kenneth Schalk (I think he's best known for Candiria)
and Blake Richardson, BTBAM's actual drummer.
It's a cool idea and a cool thing to feature in the album.

Even as a huge fan, it takes a few concerted listens to finally start to be able to /listen/ to the album. Happens every time - listen a bunch of times, favorite tracks fall wayside to tracks I didn't initially like usually because they were super dense with ideas, then I just like to listen to the whole thing. Happens with Tool, and a lot of other prog bands (and to be clear, I did not like the album on first listen - though I did enjoy the 3 singles they released)

This is a really incredible album and has an insane amount of callbacks to Colors I (and a few other projects). Listen to the first 30 seconds of Foam Born (b): Decade of Statues from Colors I, then listen to the first 30 seconds of Double Helix again. And both tracks are extremely heavy tracks following a piano based intro that increases in intensity leading to the next song.

I appreciate you giving them a try. Unfortunately coming back to BTBAM for repeated listens is a requirement to get into their albums. This one in particular I would recommend 3-5 full listens to even begin to appreciate. A lot of it sounds like randomness at first but once you piece it together and start memorizing parts for yourself, it becomes apparent that everything is there for a reason. They are the best at what they do in my opinion. I recommend going back to this multiple times. But either way, great video dude!

Give it a few more listens and you will be hooked :D
I suggest their 2015 album "Coma Ecliptic" if you want something easier to listen to. It kind of has the same genre influences consistent throughout the entire album rather than varying per song and less left turns (although there still is some). The song structures are also generally easier to digest, especially on the first half of the album.

By the way, BTBAM can be, almost considered an Avantgarde Metal Band, that can be translated as experimental progressive death metal haha, here you have some other bands you could listen to: Unexpect (Album - Fables of the sleepless empire), Diablo Swing Orchestra (Album - all of them, they are amazing, but i recommend you to start with Sing Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious), Pin Up Went Down (All of their albums), Vvon Dogma I (they only have one album), Native Construct (Album- Quiet World); Belive me all of this albums and bands are worth the listen, most of them master pieces.

Adding this near the end of the reaction.
I totally understand. You really never know what to get with these guys. If nothing else, take their storytelling of an entire album together, and the chaos of each individual song melding together to create something that they wanted to release as an artwork; maybe not an artwork you enjoy, but an artwork nonetheless. I think you mentioned that near the beginning.
Maybe check out White Walls or Coma Ecliptic album, I feel that was more in line with things you would be more familiar with. If not, take it how many people take Meshuggah: great for the artistic expression, and that's all.

You're totally right, there is no band that sounds quite like BTBAM.
This album is a successor to BTBAM's magnum opus in their original 'Colors' album.
While the overall sound is a little different between the albums, a lot of the song structures are the same - with lots of genre-mixing thrown in there.
Colors is also definitely worth a listen, but I get that not everyone is going to like the unpredictability of this band in general.
Personally, I can't get enough of it. I love the unpredictability of it, I love the genre-mixing and I love the vast range of emotions the band makes me feel in a matter of minutes.

I've got a buddy who has convinced me to try every album by this band, I have not heard anything that I've liked. Just not into it, even listening through this with you I'm not into the new album. When it's good it's just okay and when they change it up dramatically its grating. Maybe it's just not for me. Have you heard Shrezzers self titled album? Highly recommended if you like R&B type singing with screams, and saxophone

@@evannicholson8379 sorry to reply 2 years later, did you become a high school girl after listening to that? Shrezzers kinda fell off for me since then anyway. I do like that new Currents album though 🔥
