The unrelentingly speedy, rather "dry" sounding (not much texture), tremolo-picking heavy kind of metal is usually just thrash metal. Here you could call it progressive thrash metal, a very rare subgenre since most thrash metal is just very to-the-point, usually not lasting beyond 5mn with simple enough harmonic language and sound stuctures. Vektor definitely stands out in many ways !

@@MakeshiftR0b0t I get you're concern but honestly no. David might be a piece of shit but the music he's made is some of the best stuff ever composed, to me anyway. When I heard about it initially I was pretty disappointed and couldn't listen to the music for a while without thinking something along the lines of "Wow, what the fuck. Why did my favorite band have to be founded by someone this fucked in the head?". Eventually the feeling subsided when I started to think about how many great musicians are shitty people and I started to mentally separate art from it's creator in general. For example Varg Vikernes is a fucking murderer, arsonist, and white supremacist. He's a horrible person but Filosofem still sounds great to me and I can't deny it. Mark Holcomb is a cheater, Dave Mustaine is homophobic, and Dimebag Darrel put the confederate flag on his guitar but they're all still great guitarists. If Mikael Akerfeldt was exposed for something awful Blackwater Park would still be a great album. It's just not that relevant to me anymore and doesn't have an effect on my listening experience. With all this being said if I dislike the artist for whatever reason I won't support them monetarily outside of the microscopic amount of ad revenue they get from each listen and I understand why someone else would stop listening to them all together after a controversy. Also correct me if I'm wrong but didn't David go to rehab and stop acting so horribly since then?

This is/was my favorite band! This is the opening track to an epic scifi concept album. Some of the comments are disappointed you didn't react to Recharging the void (the closing track) which is admittedly a better song, but I'm happy you didn't spoil it for yourself. It's a track that book ends the album and musically (and lyrically) it builds from the foundation of charing the Void and the rest of the album. Anyways great reaction! Hopefully you check out more from them!
Edit: 18:12 Btw you are right, sonically and lyrically the beginning of the track talks about the main character, an astronaut for the galactic empire isolated in deep space, who comes upon a source of immortality. In the back half of the track he decides to return to the empire to take over with this technology. The rest of the album deals with this set up, delving a bit into post scarcity. What happens when your society no longer needs to progress and instead starts to stagnant?

Holy crap I never thought I'd get to see you do Vektor. Let alone one of my favorite songs by them! PLEASE if you ever care to return to Vektor, you're right about the sequel to this song being called "Recharging the Void", which is--arguably--even more impressive compositionally.
"Charging the Void" is the first track on Vektor's third album "Terminal Redux", whereas "Recharging the Void" is the Final Track. They have other songs that are reaction worthy too. In fact, they just released a new EP like a week ago. The second track "Dead by Dawn" is pretty sick/progressive.
Anyways, I'm glad you noticed and spoke a lot about their drummer and bassist in the video.
FOR ANYONE INTERESTED here is a link to a video of a drum cover of this song by their newest drummer so you can appreciate the pure drumming: ua-cam.com/video/J1l2l3nZ0-Q/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MikeOhlsonDrummer

Blast beats, that's what those machine gun drum beats are called blast beats, and there are different types of them, based on different techniques. There's almost a whole separate like, "theory" for extreme metal drumming. Well, there is for all instruments when it comes to metal, a lot of innovation.

    Hey Geebz -
Many of us would call it a couple of subgenres; "Tech-Thrash" or Progressive Thrash, which started circa 1985 as many Thrash bands (as well as Death Metal) started to _progress_ from just playing fast or "brutally", many were being influenced by Progressive "Rock" techniques. And where these bands (Thrash & Tech-Thrash) were influencing the newer subgenre that was just getting its footing; "Prog Metal" (see purveyors of the genre: Magnum, Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, and Crimson Glory). As now, especially over the last 15+ years, all types of Metal/Extremes (including Avant-Garde) are influencing Prog Metal.
Most of the newer Thrash bands are going back to their roots and playing more straight forward. So the more adventurous ones may not have heard of the more "obscure" bands that came before them.
But I LOVE that you are tackling those more obscure bands and breaking it all down, even if harder to digest. It took some time back in the day to get into the more extreme metal, but came to enjoy particular bands that have pushed the envelope.
    - Thanks again for your deep dives!
And if you want to checkout a little history . . . .

Vektor is sort of progressive thrash with some tech and death elements...would not be considered true technical death metal by most. Definitely a lot of attention to detail in the writing, creativity, and chops, though, no doubt.
Super excited for you to hear some high production value tech death where things like this are honed to a diamond point (where the Terry Bozzios and Steve Vais of the genre... like Hannes Grossmann, Sebastian Lanser, Muhammad Suiçmez, Christian Münzner, and Rafael Trujillo... live). Happy to see the breadth on here and love you keeping an open mind and trying new stuff!! Fingers crossed for the GODS of tech (Obscura [e.g., "Ethereal Skies"], Alkaloid [e.g., "Rise of the Cephalopods"], or Necrophagist [e.g., "The Stillborn One"]) some day soon!

I probably would call this something like prog/speed metal, but as a lot of people have pointed out it's rooted somewhat in thrash metal. Personally I think the vocals are more akin to what you would find in black metal, so I just end up in kind of a prog zone.
Anyway, love this album! The sense of speed and chaotic aggression really lends itself to the sci fi themes in a way that it gives you the feeling of really hurtling through the stars. From what I understand they actually tune their guitars UP from standard like a whole step, which is very unusual in metal, where most people would be tuning down lower. Really gives an interesting and unique sound to things. I also appreciate that there are a lot of major sounding melodies involved without really making the music sound too sappy, because everything that's going on is so intense and fast, they can kind of get away with it.
I think my favorite track is actually "Pteropticon" but this whole album is pretty great.

Wow, I was just thinking about how (Re)Charging the Void would be awesome. I do think that both songs should be looked at, and preferably in their intended order. Recharging the Void is one of the most incredible outro tracks I've ever heard.
As far as the genre goes, it's broadly thrash metal, but it blends a lot of elements of other genres. If you want to be a little less specific but also a bit more accurate, you could classify it as progressive metal. I've heard it jokingly referred to as "progressive blackened tech-death space metal", but it's honestly pretty specific and accurate.

Props for chosing this band and track! As others already said it's progressive (sci-fi) trash, very technical proggy wacky tunes. TR blew my mind when I first heard it, mindboggling arrangements, the dynamics work so well and it is a real ensemble-work void of hey look at me guitar solos. I haven't seen them live so far but wonder how you can play something like TR live. I saw some clips on YT and it's like doing a triathlon, the energy and focus neededis unreal.
TR is a concept album about an atsronaut, a former head of the guard of the intergalactic Cygnus regime, who was expelled and now awakes from cyrosleep out in space and has to survive. He finds a molecule which is the key to immortality but also transforms him. After 13 yrs he returns half-insane to take his revenge. And yes you're right there's a p.2 which is the last track Recharging the Void (my favourite track on TR, both include these awesome female chorus) which completes the circle.
    I heed the Cygnus call
A symbol for life and death’s resolve
Our fate implodes upon our crux
The terminal is set to self-destruct
    Relic Alshain
    Oh Shahin-i-tarazu
I return my flesh to you
