I installed the ptm7950 on my WM2 about a month ago and it made a noticeable difference. I run 28W docked and almost never hear the fan. Temps are good when I check. It doesn't seem to make a significant difference at dropping the low temps, but seems to become more effective the hotter it gets. Great stuff!
That is in line with Linus' findings.
He also says, that the pad becomes more effective when it becomes hotter.
On Discord some people are interested how the pad performs under normal conditions, so I might do a follow up video with a few tests under normal load. I can not compare it to stock thermal paste any more, but at least we can get some values out of it.
I got a packaging with a big sheet of that thing, just haven't gotten around to doing it but glad to see this video being put out by you Mystechry. Love the ambiance music by the way!

Excellent information, I had a randomly crashing wm2, I suspected dodgy paste and got Honeywell pad based on your tut, on removing the heatsink I found there was actually a sizable strip of die exposed without any thermal compound 😮 after hw pad applied I got instant stability. I got my wm2 second hand but the factory seal was still present over bottom screws so the paste application was from factory installation 😬😬😬 not good. Thank you for this

I might be wrong, but there might have been a case of a Max 2 without thermal paste at all.
Luckily the Max 2 is so super simple to open and GPD does not void your warranty, but supports you, if you want to repair your device on your own.
I follow your instructions that work excellent.
PTM is a must for all my handhelds now. So easy to apply and free tdp.
At GPD factory:
- How much thermal paste do we need?
- Yes!
I repasted mine and it took 1 hour to clean this mess.
Oh, it took not that ling for me.
I did not bother cleaning everything around the CPU. Just enough to not get into the way of the pad.

Thanks man, my results are a bit dodgy since I removed a strip of dust that almost fully covered the exhaust and I additionally applied some K5 thermal paste where some of the pcb and memory components are along with Honeywell but I easily got a boost of 10 frames in Elden Ring. Dankeschön!
Woah, 10 fps for just a ptm mod is huge. You must have had bad luck with your stock thermal paste. Thanks for sharing this. I'm always happy to hear such positive results :)
@@mystechry Yeah I'm also planning to apply the same mod on the G1 egpu since the noise is bothering me quite a bit. Might even be able to go 120w mode afterwards.
@@CheeseOfMasters120w is not worth it. If the noise bothers you, sell itand buy the new one with the 6w hardware switch.
I might give that an other chance. The original 2023 model was way to loud for me.

No, it is not (probably).
I am not 100% sure. At least I did not put it there.
Might be both, a thermal pad or just a protective pad, which is more realistic in my opinion. It did not feel like a thermal pad.

Love the video! Quick question - I'm looking at possibly getting the 2023 refresh of this device and heat is definitely a concern of mine that nobody seems to comment on in the video reviews. How hot is this thing getting where you feel the need to do this? Can you comfortably hold it or is it too hot for that? Does it burn on your lap? Is there a significant difference between running at, say, 15W and 25W when it comes to temp, in your experience? Thank you so much!
I've been playing Jedi Survivor and TOTK the last couple of weeks, and my WM2 doesn't even hit 80. Usually at 25Watts. He's running it *above* the recommended wattage for sure, and 95 isn't terrible for what he's doing.
The heat never bothers me when I'm holding it, and I recommend 100% to not run this or any other laptop on your actual lap. They usually bring cold air in from the bottom and expel it from the back/sides. If you block that, you're going to be going through laptops very quickly.

A few days ago I beta tested a software to tune the fan curve. Because of a bug which I did not noticed, I was running my system with low fan at 24 watt for over an hour.
So I was probably at >80/85 all the time.
The touchpad became quite warm, but the controls did not become too hot. Else I would have noticed much earlier.
You should not put the device on your lap probably if you plan to use very high tdp, as the fan intake is at the bottom and if you block that, the system will need to thermal throttle heavily.
At below 30 watt, I do not see any need to apply the cooling pad anyways and the system sill not be hot.
15 watt is cool and you can manually decrease fan speed.
I made a whole video testing how much tdp you can sustain without using the fan at all or at only 20-30% fan speed.
15 watt rally is no issue. 20 not as well.
If you do not force down the fan, 25 is perfectly fine.
With the honeywell pad, I could sustain 35 watt in silent mode, so you are save in regular mode ;)

The link you provided in description has multiple size options to choose from. I have no idea what size to get for my Win Max 2 2023
20x30mm is already bigger than the APU. You are save to go with that one.
hey mystechry :) I like the video, your really good at them lol I was wondering what size were the pads/sheets you brought from the site? as I know you can cut them to size but I was thinking could be easier to just cut the one u got in half mostly and use that as is and just have some more overhang around the edges.

As someone who's very hesitant about opening and tinkering with electronics, I was sweating watching you peel of that plastic layer at the end 😅Very glad the effort was worth it and you got positive results.
Big question: At 18:00 you mention your particular unit came with a good cooling solution, but there may be units with bad stock cooling. I recently ordered the 2023 refresh (I have not received it yet), and I wanted to ask how may I be able to tell which one I got. If I open mine and the fan+heatsink looks like yours, should I not worry, or is it a more subtle physical detail? Do you believe it would be wise to preemptively contact GPD and request for the "good" cooling solution? This is my first purchase with them and I really would not want to receive subpar components.

Watch that disassembly video. The plastic layer went off much easier in that one.
Regarding the cooling. You just need to check yourself. Run any tester like Kombustor or Prime95. Then see how high the TDP is your unit can sustain. If it is good enough for you, it's good ;)
I got my Max 2 refresh and it seems like it can sustain >40 watt without ptm7950. As the fan has no vibration at all I still hesitate to open it up, as the 45w cooling is good enough technically.

Thank you for this video! I’ve been searching everywhere to help cool down my Win Max 2. I’m pretty new to all this (I only know basic desktop PC building) so I was just wondering what tools did you use in the video (the screwdriver, little pliers thing) and for the 55w setting, do I change that in MSI Kombustor?
I realize it may be an off topic but is it alright that the CPU temperature nearly reaches 100 C? Isn't it too extreme and turns CPU into an obsolete one over a much shorter period under this load?
You can set the temperature limit in the BIOS to 90 or less if you are not comfortable with high temperatures.
It is mainly the battery that does not like super high temperatures.
In the case of the video, it does not hurt. The CPU is rated for 100 degree C and it can handle this. It is not like I run at those temperatures all the time. with my 7840u unit I pretty much never increase tdp above 24w. I would not recommend to have the system running super hot all the time, but for some spikes and tests this is not a problem.

Really nice video. I've watched several other videos to see if there is something else I could learn on installing the pad and I didn't finish any of them. They didn't understand the product, they didn't understand what the stickers were for or the rest of your suggestions to get a proper installation of the pad. One guy was worried about the pad drying out. Thank you so much for taking the time to to make this video. One question on CPU temperature. I don't understand where the BIOS is reading the CPU temperature. Am I correct in assuming that if the BIOS is reporting a 32 degree C temperature the actual surface temperature of the CPU will be high enough to melt the pad?

Do not worry about that. You will reach the required temperature easily. If not, you do not even need the pad or a fan ;)
Finally received the pads from MODDIY and I followed your suggestions on how to install them. Sure was easy, thank you so much for taking the time to show your steps in installing the pad. I'm going to do a few shutdown/restarts on the couple servers I installed the pads to see how the temperatures drop even more. Initially the temperatures dropped two degrees C after the pad replacements. After watching other videos I almost didn't buy the pads because of how the people struggled to get the pad on the CPU. Your steps were so easy. Thanks again and have a good day.

Thanks for the tutorial! I might just try this mod. I don’t game much but do a lot CGI work on the WM2. I was wondering how/where did you manage to push the tdp to 55w? I only tried setting it to 35w in the bios and windows was crashing already when I rendered some scenes.
The cooling pad is not only useful for high tdp, but also to keep the device silent when at low tdp.
Unfortunately I have no idea why the system might have crashed for you? Maybe some real bad cooling?
Maybe join the GPD discord and ask for help there. People are very friendly and helpful there,

There really is not that much need to go beyond 35 watts.

I tried your thermal pad exactly as shown and I got WORSE results than stock.
I ended up applying Noctua HT-H1 Thermal Paste and that gave me a noticeable significant improvement of 4⁰C lower average.
The common thing I found online is the worse thermal paste is usually better than the best thermal pad. There's always an exception, but that seems to be the general idea.
I strongly recommend you try to do the same thing. I am confident you will be happy with the results and get more power out of your Win Max 2.
I suck at apply thermal paste. So I'm curious, you will probably get better results than me doing it in better way.
The thermal pad I did use on the SSDs, it works great for ssd.
I modified my win max 2 case to have thin copper heatsink on back, instead of that plastic cover for the m.2 2230
This is strange. The PTM is not regular thermal pad but special material that becomes liquid one it gets reasonably warm.
Also pretty much everyone on the GPD Discord agrees that ptm is the best thermal solution for GPD products.
You must have been an issue with your PTM probably.
Anyways, I can sustain >40w with my Max 2 and even above 30w there is not much to gain, if at all. So no, I will not use any other thermal paste on my Max 2. The difference should be not much anyways as long as you use a good paste

No, ptm7950 is perfectly save. The angle does not matter. You may also shake your device and it will not displace.

Sure, you can.
Others did that, before ptm7950 was a thing.
LM has the disadantage, that it might brick your system, if not applied carefully.
Also the Max is a moving device, so there is (very little) risk of the metal to slip onto other components when some force is applied.
As ptm is a thing, I'd recommend against LM, as ptm is equally good or better and super easy to apply without any risk involved

I just realized I have never opened my Win Max 2. I think this is the longest I have ever owned a computer without opening it. I even have opened up my M1 Mac Mini just for fun.
It's the easiest device to open I had worked with.

Sure. You can use those pads as a replacement for regular thermal paste one your laptop or desktop computer.

Forever.
It is an industrial grade solution and the advantage over thermal paste is, that is does not dry out.
I do not play at 50 watt, but not having to worry about my cooling for the lifetime of the device is a nice to have

Better not. Check how many air jet are required to sustain 50w.
Each air jet needs 1w. That would make at least 3w cooling.

20x30mm is the one I used in the video and I even had to cut that one in half.
I'd say: the bigger they are, the harder to handle.
If I wanted to spend more money on those pads, I'd buy many smaller ones at different sizes.
Even for a big cpu 40x40 should be it I guess.
I'd prefer to have clean pads to start with instead a big one from which I cut out pieces.
In the end it's up to you. The small ones are really cheap. Cheap enough that you probably don't even have to pay taxes depending on your country. So you can order one or 2 without wasting much money if you want to give it a try.
@@mystechry thx for the tip 😁. I'll get a bunch. I have a 2080Supet that I've had to limit the power in because it likes to get upto 90°c and thermal grizzly didn't help much. As well as the steam deck. I meant to buy it back when LTT did a video and forgot about it. My WM2 32gb is stock if you'd like I can run the silent tests p95 etc on if you'd like that data.

On the Win Max 2, the cooling is quite different from system to system, so your results might be very different than mine.
If you want to share some data, don't invest too much time for me. One quick before-after test is enough. I am not the benchmarking and numbers guy ;)

I have had positive results with the cooling pad and others from the GPD Discord community, too.
Something does not magically become garbage, simply because LTT mentions it.
I would be surprised if they had uncovered the secret magic of turning good stuff into trash ;)
