Stop Chasing Controller Myths - Hall Sticks and High Polling Rates
After doing some research about what my next controller would be I had to make this video.It seems like there are way to many false beliefs about hall sticks and polling rates out there that needs clarification.
Well, at least I wanted to give my 2 cents to it after I found what in my opinion is the best controller to be used together with my GPD Win Max 2.

    I can only see it being useful for annotating things in onenote as you both type and draw. How far does the hinge go for the screen? If it had went all the way I think it would have been more useful for prolonged session of drawing.

    • @mystechry
      @mystechry 23 дні тому

      I do not use it at all. I uploaded the video because it was requested by the community. You can open the screen by 180 degree, so that it is completely flat. So in theory you can hold the device like a book and rotate it by 90 degree. for some sketches it might be good enough. Also I know someone who generally prefers a stylus over using a finger for touch inputs.

    @mystechry , I would love to see a video like this for new 8840u version. I dont know if you plan to get it, but if you do i rhink it will make an excellent video. • @mystechry

      I do not plan to get a 8840u unit. The difference is even smaller than 6800u vs 7840u. It is almost non-existing. RAM seems to be a bit more stable but I never had issues with 7500mhz on my 7840u unit.

    I tried your thermal pad exactly as shown and I got WORSE results than stock. I ended up applying Noctua HT-H1 Thermal Paste and that gave me a noticeable significant improvement of 4⁰C lower average. The common thing I found online is the worse thermal paste is usually better than the best thermal pad. There's always an exception, but that seems to be the general idea.

    • @scarvalho1
      @scarvalho1 4 місяці тому

    • @scarvalho1
      @scarvalho1 4 місяці тому

      I suck at apply thermal paste. So I'm curious, you will probably get better results than me doing it in better way. The thermal pad I did use on the SSDs, it works great for ssd. I modified my win max 2 case to have thin copper heatsink on back, instead of that plastic cover for the m.2 2230

    • @mystechry
      @mystechry 3 місяці тому

      This is strange. The PTM is not regular thermal pad but special material that becomes liquid one it gets reasonably warm. Also pretty much everyone on the GPD Discord agrees that ptm is the best thermal solution for GPD products. You must have been an issue with your PTM probably. Anyways, I can sustain >40w with my Max 2 and even above 30w there is not much to gain, if at all. So no, I will not use any other thermal paste on my Max 2. The difference should be not much anyways as long as you use a good paste

      Probably not unfortunately. It did not even fully support the 7840u. However I am not using or missing this tool any more. You can set the temperature limit in the BIOS to 90 or less if you are not comfortable with high temperatures. It is mainly the battery that does not like super high temperatures. In the case of the video, it does not hurt. The CPU is rated for 100 degree C and it can handle this. It is not like I run at those temperatures all the time. with my 7840u unit I pretty much never increase tdp above 24w. I would not recommend to have the system running super hot all the time, but for some spikes and tests this is not a problem.

    Thanks man, my results are a bit dodgy since I removed a strip of dust that almost fully covered the exhaust and I additionally applied some K5 thermal paste where some of the pcb and memory components are along with Honeywell but I easily got a boost of 10 frames in Elden Ring. Dankeschön!

    There's pressure sensitivity???!!! I have the 2022 version and I ddin't know that I can draw on it! What pen can you recommend for drawing? Also, what app to use?

    • @mystechry
      @mystechry 6 місяців тому

      Yes, there is pressure sensitivity. For drawing I use the open source app Krita. I am not an artist, so any pen that works will do for me. Just make sure that the pen is pressure sensitive. It must be compatible with the Microsoft surface. Lenovo pens do not work. the on I use was <20€, so just give one a try :)

    You are clearly not wrong about some of your points, but they are some shortcuts made in your video. 1) Good Hall effect will be better than Potentiometers even if I agree that bad HE will be worse for sure. HE are less prones to drift, of course if the spring goes bad, then it won't matter that the stick is HE, but it does remove a variable. And just being able get next to no inner deadzone is awesome for FPS, it makes it easier to get finer adjustment on the low range. 20 Drift was already a thing back on the Xbox 360, my 360 controller developed drift back in the days, and I remember reading Xbox elite controller users complaining about drift also. But I agree that the switch exploded the fear into the mainstream audience to exaggerated ways. And regarding the 8bitdo ultimate bluetooth, it IS compatible with Switch and PC via bluetooth ... You are confusing the ultimate 2.4G (Not hall effect and only PC via dongle) and the Ultimate bluetooth which does both switch and PC. The bluetooth one can definitely pair it with a PC via bluetooth (that is what I did to get the gyro working on PC)

    • @mystechry
      @mystechry 7 місяців тому

      1) I agree and I said that I would (most likely) take the hall stick variant of sticks if both were available Regarding Dead zone: My Xbox Series controller ha pretty much no dead zone. Maybe that will change over time and I need to set a bigger one once the stick wears out a bit. 2) Yes, drift was always an issue but not so much of an issue that the majority of controllers were broken after a few years. We could say the same about built in batteries. Regarding 8bitdo: The Ultimate and all the nice newer Gamecube variants have the issue that they only pair with PC in Switch mode and Xinput with the dongle. At least I have tested those last year during the Gamescom and did not find a way to enable Xinput bluetooth. 8Bitdo also claims on their website that they do not support Xinput via bluetooth. Of course, you can pair it in Switch mode and use Steam since Steam supports Switch controllers incl. gyro. I however play on GOG and emulation and do not want Steam as a middle ware. As a consequence a switch input bluetooth controller is not useful for me. If there is something I have overlooked that makes the controller to connect via Xinput over bluetooth, please tell me. I'd value hat a lot.

    9:37 "10ms input lag is good enough" For 99% of games and game systems yes. For CS:GO no, in e-sports people are dealing with 2ms frame time and click to photon latency is usually under 20ms if you're doing everything right.

    • @mystechry
      @mystechry 7 місяців тому

      I 100% agree. I have no idea about CS:GO but I am sure that it makes a difference for a professional player. Most people however are not and we sould stop falling for high numbers if we do not reqquire it. There is so more that makes a good controller than input lag. That Rainbow 2 Pro for example has surely great features and the polling rate is <1ms according to the xinput tester. However it still feels super cheap compared to an Xbox series controller. Also the initial resistance of the sticks is much lower on the Xbox controller which makes aiming so much better. My aiming improved by a lot once I encountered a good stick for the first time in my life.

    • @budthecyborg4575
      @budthecyborg4575 7 місяців тому

      @@mystechry If I remember correctly the new Xbox Core controllers when used with the proprietary Xbox Series X|S wireless signal actually have further reduced input lag because they implemented a type of freesync with their 125hz polling rate to capture inputs at just the right time. If you're gaming on Windows it's possible the Xbox wireless dongle could lower latency of your controller.

    • @mystechry
      @mystechry 7 місяців тому

      @@budthecyborg4575Yes, it has this proprietary anti lag technology. However on PC it seems that about 6ms is the lowest you can get via wire or dongle. For me that is enough and if I ever want the lower latency, I can use my long USB-C cable. Funnily enough, when testing the controller via USB-C cable, that xinput polling rate tester reports even a little more than 125hz. So wire seems to be really good for the XBOX controller

    Finally someone acknowledges that mechanical wear is the primary fault with modern game controllers. Analog sticks should never use actuation force above 30g because both your thumb and the spring mechanism will last exponentially longer with less spring force.
