I agree, an absolutely stunning montage of games. It makes me want an entire month off from current gen games just to replay these stone cold classics. Some of these I've seen but never tried, like Shinobi, Star Ocean, or the Tales games
Just now discovered this gem of a video. I cannot overstate how well this was made. Informative, entertaining, and educational. Best part is, I know y'all truly had a blast making this video. Well done MLIG. Well. Done.
Darkbeat Well with the PotatoBox One X devs will now even more downgrade games to 30fps! I switched a month ago to PC gaming because of almost every game being 30fps!! Miss the good old CRT TV 60fps PS2 Games.
Darkbeat Me too, I feel there has been "wasted potential" since last game generation. Consoles are ALREADY POWERFUL ENOUGH for BOTH better Graphics AND 60 Frames Per Seconds.
Jeff T That's bullshit. My PC has Core 2 quad q8300 from 2008 or something and it runs DOOM 2016 at 14-17 FPS low settings 720p whereas PS4 runs it at 1080p medium-high settings and solid 60fps. Yes the CPU clock speed is slow but there are 8 cores and I assume there have been other improvements to CPU features since then which some developers clearly take good advantage of. Just look at how good the animations, physics and ai of the machines are on Horizon Zero Dawn or how good SW Battlefront II looks while running at 60fps.
Jeff T Even on PS3 and XBox 360, original fighting games still run in 60 FPS. Metal Gear Solid Vs is a free roaming game and it also runs in 60 FPS on PS4 and XBox One, so why couldn't games like Uncharted 4, Lost Legacy, the Assassin's Creed games and fucking FFXV on those Platforms do that?
Thats what they call optimisation, that and these days games are made with console in mind and lazily ported to pc, if it was built for pc in the first place the console requirements would be higher, this is why GTA4 runs terrible even on a high end pc from now.
+Tukaw [Try4ce] Thank you! We don't get many comments like this, usually it's "GROSS clean your systems!" What they don't realize is that they are actually pretty clean before shooting, but The camera lens is so sharp that it can show dust that is much harder to see with the naked eye.
To this day I think the PS2 was the most hyped gaming system of all-time. I worked in electronics at Wal-mart and we had at least 20 calls a day asking if we had any PS2s in stock after it was launched. That answer was usually no.
daAmazin FatB0y He didn’t say he’d change his UA-cam name. He went to the government and had his birth certificate modified so that he’d be called Bob J. Deinterlacing.
frombauer Nah. Most big channels have empty subs. Unlike here where most people subscribed actually watch the content. This channel has it where it counts, in the views.
At first i thought "58 minutes?! I just want a quick answer!" but then i got sucked into it. You did an excellent job, guys. Very detailed and informative. Also, thumbs up for the montage and sounds.
This video hits all the right buttons for me - nerdy tech stuff, retro gaming, early 2000's nostalgia. I've watched this video a couple of dozen times, it's great comfort viewing. Awesome job guys!
The PS2 is, by far, my favorite console of ALL time. Its library is so huge, and I still discover more hidden gems from it all the time. Thanks for the great work, guys.
Seriously, it is outstanding. I went through some trouble to get a Sony HD CRT this year in order to get the best image possible out of the PS2, and it made such a huge difference. The image with Component is better than when I was a kid, and back then I was blown away by PS2 S-Video. Also, I had no idea that God Hand existed until this video, so you're right about the hidden gems too.
PS2 output via Component or RGB is more than good enough to enjoy the incredible library. Especially since much of the library was developed with CRTs or poor signal quality in mind. :)
I only owned a slim ps2 with a cheap lcd tv 5 years ago and have no intention of buying another one, and yet i watched this entire thing because it was so interesting
For the PS3, the yellow light of death has finally been accurately diagnosed. It is a set of capacitors, the NEC TOKIN ones that filter power to the PS3. You can read more on it but the yellow light of death can be fixed, and once it's fixed, it is permanently fixed.
Even if it gets fixed, I imagine that the system will still run very hot after an hour or two of play. I always let it rest in between games just to be careful.
This sounds interesting. I'd had my PS3 _reballed_ back in the day after I ran into the YLOD, though I'm not certain if any additional repair work was done. If the (or at least one) of the issues has been diagnosed, that's good to know and probably means it'll be easier for me to take preventative action with my old BC 80gb Fat.
It's interesting seeing just how different the design philosophies of the Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, and Xbox truly were. - The Dreamcast was designed to bring the NAOMI arcade experience to the living room and kickstart a new era in gaming. - The PS2 was designed to follow up the success and hype of the PS1, turn game consoles into more than just game consoles, and take full advantage of everything CRTs had to offer. - The GameCube was designed to bring gaming into the digital audio/video age (albeit much too early for its own good) and break Nintendo out of the mold of them being a behind-the-times kiddy company (an effort that crashed and burned as soon as it got off the ground). - The Xbox was designed to bridge the gap between console gaming and PC gaming and pick up the slack when Sega's huge debts inevitably took them out of the race. Really, the vast diversity of visions present in sixth generation consoles, combined with the sixth generation's general emphasis on experimentation (meaning that any genre could sell pretty damn well, with no conforming to a general trend), made 1998-2007 a sort of creative high point for the gaming industry as a whole, even if it was during a time when gaming had become incredibly niche. It's a shame that we probably won't see such a widespread amount of creative diversity in the industry again for a long while, if at all.
I agree on your last point. WIth PS3/360 generation everything went towards mass market, AAA budgets and common taste. But on the other hand: indie games today have some kind of counter weight, don't you think?
During that era unlike today games are deal breakers people go where the games are and most are exclusive to one or the other unlike today where most games are multiplat. Also that era is the last were consoles are different from PCs because games release on consoles back than never had pc ports.
I don't think so. PS3 have huge library of vastly different games and the best library of japanese imports in it's generation. Wii have also many hidden gems. Xbox360 was for me the odd one of them and the least interesting, with mainly Western developers on board. I still prefer my PS3 before PS4 because of many exclusive japanese games on it, most of them never ported elsewhere (or on PS Vita, which is for most people like they never existed). I was into strategy games and CRPGs at the time when PS2 rulled, so I wasn't interested and jumped from Mega Drive and Sega Saturn straight into PS3. And for me is PS3 my most beloved console (and PS Vita my most favourite handheld).
This is unbelievably well done. I can't believe it kept me captivated for an entire hour for aspects I wasn't a die hard about, but now understand so much more. Thank you for this level of quality.
True. it's because people are babies about comparisons... It's really a shame cause they always do their best to show objectively what version runs better etc...
I absolutely love how hd retrovision " ste and nick" are making the BEST component cables for so many systems. These guys deserve so much respect from our retro community! THANK YOU, STE AND NICK!
Which CRT I have a Bang and Olufsen MX 6000 picture is great via RGB but bit dark only via RGB I heard the MX 8000 has not got this issue and has got another Software
I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of detail that went into this video. It came up as a suggested video for me and I'm glad I watched it. I've been doing everything I can to achieve the best quality output when recording footage for my videos. After watching this episode and not noticing that this was an hour of detailed research into the visual output of the PS2, I am an instant subscriber. Thanks for the video and all the information!
Seriosuly! I got ps1,2,3 and 4 and im just spending endless time on my ps2 like crazy...even more now that i spend good money getting a hold of all the silent hill games and resident evil games...daam ps2 is fuckn awesome
Same actually that’s mainly cause the gears of war trilogy such a addicting game I feel like the later games in the gears of war series aren’t as good as the original trilogy
@@hugo-garcia That seems reasonable to me. Component is pretty variable, depending on the console and how your display is adjusted it can be considerably worse than RGB, or about the same, or slightly better.
This is, without doubt, one of my absolute favourite MLIG videos yet... informative, educational, and also entertaining. I don't know how I missed it two YEARS ago! :o Wow. Thanks guys
(also, add my voice to the anecdote about having "repair services" fix their PS3s without lasting success. My 60GB PAL launch model, half-hardware/partial-emulation, eventually died of YLOD after a few years -- I sent it off to a repair guru who claimed to reball the whole device, but it died again within a few weeks. The very same thing happened with my Xbox 360 Elite launch unit, which died of RRoD and despite MULTIPLE repair attempts by a guru, died each time)
Something that you guys missed is how some PS2 games handle widescreen; certain games (like God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and Jak and Daxter) use vert- scaling, which means they actually chop off the top and bottom of the screen in order to fit it into a widescreen display. So you may have to sacrifice resolution for some games if you want widescreen. The Wikipedia list mentioned in the video also lets you know if a game uses this method.
You guys never fail to make obscure information accessible while somehow tugging at my heartstrings. Hope your channel is around for a long time to come 🖤
Some episode ideas you may have been thinking of (or not) -OG Xbox RGB -Dreamcast RGB -Wii RGB -Analogue Super NT -CRT Emudriver/Soft15Khz (software allowing you to play MAME arcade games in native resolution on PC)
It's pretty easy to get a good quality image out of the Xbox, pretty much every game support progressive scan on the Xbox. It's more a matter of finding good quality scart or component cables for it. There are a lot of cheap Chinese cables that are bad. But anyway, an episode about the Xbox would be very cool.
After spending years looking for the "Perfect PS2 Look" via all kinds of scalers I grabbed a 32" Trinitron that was on its way to the dumpster and PS2 games have never looked better. I think I'm finally satisifed with it.
Samsung tv's can accept the ps1's 240p signal through component cables, and I'm not talking about the older models. There line of smart tv's accept it and it looks great
Hi Fairwell, can you suggest some models to look at? Doing some searching, I found Samsung UN50RU7100 / UN50RU7200 and UN58RU7100. But I didn't find a way to filter searches by "has component-video input", so it's been slow going. Thanks!
@@casualvanilla while this is true, if you buy the TV secondhand and the original owner threw out the OEM component cable adapter then you might be out of luck. At least I was and I had to buy a component to HDMI adapter.
Honestly, a few years ago I thought interlacing was a stupid and terrible idea, but after spending some time with a good CRT and some 576i vide, I’ve realised it honestly can look really good.
my rca jacks on my CRT TV are fucked up from all the pulling out and putting in the composite cables cause i have a Atari 2600, NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, Wii, Sega Genesis Model 1 and when i want to play a different console, i swap the jacks, i should get a switch box so i don't have to put any more wear on those RCA jacks
Man, so much information flooding my mind. Good to know how PS2 will be played for the modern age. Real damn shame Sony is not following suit like Microsoft and going backwards compatibility. Then again, Nintendo isn't doing the same either.
Well, it is kinda understandable: The PS2 and PS3 were rather specialized Hardware. emulating a PS2 even now takes a lot of CPU power - you can say roughly 10-20x that of the PS2, and the PS3 had even stranger spezialized Vector-units and other stuff. the first Ps3 models actually had the PS2 Hardware inside to do the emulating, then some versions tried it in software (which had some problems).
considering the chips used for the PS2 haven't been manufactured for 6 years and the cost issues with the PS3, they may have simply been turned off doing hardware emulation because of it. with nintendo i'm glad they moved away, the gamecube hardware simply wasn't competitive anymore, no matter how much overclocking they did with it. but even the Wii U can natively play gamecube games (with a bit of softmodding and ISO ripping)
14:47 For some reason? Not everybody worldwide had HDTVs and HDMI cables back in 2006. There were very few people that had them in that year and a lot of people were still using CRTs and composite or s-video because HDTVs and HDMI cables were expensive at the time. If you can not afford a HDTV or HDMI cables, or course you plug it in with something else other than HDMI.
I think his point is that composite was the only cable that ever came with a new PS3. Even the Super Slims from 2012 all the way until they stopped making them in 2017 only came with composite, although HDTVs were extremely common by then.
Blank, that's not true, either. Most people still had SDTVs, though plenty of them had component inputs, they were still limited to 480i. I *wish* that the PS3 came with component cables. :(
48:20 For those that love their fat PS3s and want to avoid the "yellow light of death" I would highly recommend getting in there and replacing the thermal paste on the CELL and RSX. The paste that SONY used seems to be of very poor quality and by this point in the life of those consoles has usually degraded into useless, caked, chalky mess. It is a really simple fix for anyone with basic electronics or PC building experience. Plenty of good tutorials on UA-cam. I few years ago the power supply on my launch 60GB PS3 died and I took the opportunity to replace the thermal paste while I had the thing open. It was huge improvement on the stability of the system and the noise level, as the system spends much less time with its fan in "jet engine mode."
I bought a fully hardware backwards compatible PS3 about 2 months ago it works great but I'm seriously afraid to use it lol. I ordered Arctic silver paste but haven't had a chance to fix it. Do you think after replacing the paste I won't have to worry?
Climatee not really. Get the IHS off the GPU and CPU and replace that thermal paste. As that is the paste that was applied quite badly many times not even even completely covering the DIE. But unfortunately it is quite hard to get the IHS off the CPU. I replaced that thermal paste with liquid metal. So I have nothing to worry about anymore. But really the PS3 is a terrible system to take apart and put together again.
I love how they used so much Kingdom Hearts music in this video. It made me happy and nostalgic. xD Edit: I can also really appreciate that they showed clips from Xenosaga at several points throughout the video. I love that trilogy, highly overlooked and underrated. :)
Theres also the PS2 VGA mod, It pulls the RGB signal from the board itself and bypasses the video encoder to give itself a better picture. The mod is very obscure and can only be done on PS2s with motherboard revisions older than GH-015. I only found about about it via some obscure fourm posts and the small entry they have the playstation page on retroRGB.
Hey, I just want to thank you guys for this incredibly in depth and informative video. My fat PS3 just died 2 months ago (yellow light of death) and I’ve just been kinda bummed that not only did my favorite console that played 3 whole generations of games die, but now a solid 1/3 of my library is unplayable at the moment. I’ve thought it over this whole time and decided that I’m gonna get a PS3 slim along with a PS2 slim and some component cables. As much as I would like to have another fat PS3, they’re quite old now and I’m worried a new one would fail too and I can’t afford another console to fail. Again, thank you so much for laying it all out for me. I got a plan in place and I’m getting ready to execute it. It may take some time because work slowed down immensely due to COVID, and I don’t have a lot of money to spend at the moment, but I’ll start saving up. Here’s hoping the launch of the PS5 doesn’t doom the PS3’s online store. Yet another thing for this collector to worry about.
[Try4ce] Glad to have helped! One bit of information that has come about since the time this video launched, apparently it has been discovered that the PS3 YLOD is often (usually? always? maybe?) caused by a bad capacitor that can be replaced. This is a MUCH less difficult issue than had been assumed, and why fixes like reballing tended to only be temporary. I don't know much about the details myself, but I wouldn't toss that old PS3 fat just yet, since it likely can be fixed without a tremendous effort.
Great video! Good quality component cables are way overpriced here in Europe (70 to 100$!!). I ended up building one myself; I bough a used official Microsoft XB360 component cable for 5$, a super cheap chinese ps1 scart cable for 4$, spliced the ms cable and soldered the appropriate wires to the ps2 cable's plug. Amazing quality, no video noise and no audio buzz! I also connected the composite video rca to the luma line, so I can use the same cable for both component and RGB (with a PVM or an inexpensive rca to scart pin adapter). I did a similar thing for my Original Xbox, using the composite rca for spdif audio. If you have the patience and the soldering skills I recommend you this method.
The PS2 has always been a childhood highlight for me. Just the thought of that being years upon years ago, almost 15 years ago in fact, really gets my nostalgia going.
Thanks! I've just ordered a proper SCART cable at retrogamingcables, as I have very loud buzzing noises with cheap cables from China. Can't wait to try them out.
Far and away some of the most brilliant video-game documenting on the interwebs. As a lifelong collector, gamer and now game dev artist, your vids have generously provided absurd amounts of knowledge on topics I've been completely ignorant of for over 30 years. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, MLG.
Those Monster component cables with "death grip" need to be twisted as you pull. That's why they have a helix style cutout instead of the straight cut. Reason being is they are meant to be plugged and left alone knowing even if tripped over, they will remain attached. But can be quickly taken off as opposed to actual screw on variants.
Man, I really love the PlayStation 2 growing up ever since me and my brother Tyler have that console when we were kids. The first PlayStation 2 we got for Christmas was bundled with ATV Offroad Fury 2. Good times.
I just got my setup finished with my SNES, N64, Gamecube, and PS2 all hooked up to my switcher and going to a CRT. I plan on getting S-Videos for all of them because I do like how it looks on there. Awesome video guys.
This is an older video at this point -- five years! -- but I just found it while looking up whether it would be worth to get an RGB cable for my PS2. I found the part at 10:22 where Aigis says, "I'm... somewhat surprised as well." while the non-HD-capable monitors looking better for 480i to be absolutely hillariously well-timed timed. Well done, editor!
"That one dumb game you used to play that nobody else seems to care about" Marvel. Nemesis. the absolute go-to game for my brother and I. Broken, imbalanced, buggy, but soooo much fun.
I recently got a PS2 slim and bought some 1st party component cables. Hooked it up to my 65 inch 4K tv and was expecting it to look meh. Honestly was impressed at how clear it all came out, granted all I've tested is Shadow Hearts but still, it looks quite nice
[Try4ce] It's true, plugging component cables straight into your HDTV does not look bad at all if your TV does a decent job of handling it, and you have realistic expectations for what PS2 resolution is gonna look like!
Some HDTV and 4K sets handle 480p content quite well, so if you set your expectations accordingly like Try said, then it can look quite allright. 480i is harder to pull off still, due to the required deinterlacing but some sets still handle it quite decently.
Rewatching this video again after I have learned more. This is so thorough it’s amazing. When are you guys going to start teaching a college course on gaming?
[Try4ce] I think it's visually the best aged game on the PS2, what with its simple pleasing art style, 480p, widescreen, and 60fps. I love showing it off when I can. :)
In one of my videos i tested the PS2 with a RGB scart packapunch cable using the OSSC (line2x) & Mcable: Gaming Edition and i think it is the best option i've come up with following your suggestions. You channel is wonderful, i see your videos every day men!
Honestly, I grew up with the PS2 and I'm proud of it. Many great games from the PS2 like silent hill series, ICO, Shadow of the colossus, God of war series, Castlevania series, Fatal Frame series and more! I just love spending my time with my PS2. It's my childhood. I'm hella satisfied that my childhood was with my PS2. I have my PS2 for 10 years and still playing it. Silent hill 2 and 3 was just way beyond their times. The graphics of silent is something you can only feel if you have that unique sense of taste. The soundtracks of castlevania and silent hill was just way too good that no modern games can reach the feel it gives. Honestly there is just so much I cold be taking about, just love my PS2....
As far as I know there is no permanent fix for "yellow light of death", just a fix that extends the system's life by a couple months at best. I've had to perform the fix on my ps3 several times over the past couple years. Unfortunately, backwards compatible ps3s that are still functioning are rare and usually not worth the asking price.
I remember sending my system off to get 'reballed' by a supposed expert business on it. When I got the system back, it failed again after only a month of use.
I've watched several of your videos now, and I just want to comment on the fantastic production quality and thoroughness in every episode I've seen. And the switching from Marc to Coury is seamless. I'd never guess that you were in different states. Kudos.
Awesome video! One thing I want to mention is DVDs on PS2 will only play in YPbPr mode and not RGB because of how DVDs are encoded, I think. Just like Blu Rays are encoded in YCbCr digital. Something to think about if you want to still play DVDs on PS2 or OG Xbox like I do.
[Try4ce] Yep, this is a curious thing I discovered while testing things out. I didn't think it was relevant enough to the topic to waste time on in the video, but an interesting thing for sure.
Within 3 minutes and 10 seconds of this episode, I subscribed. The work you folks put into your channel is amazing. Thank you also for subtitling your videos!
I am in love with your intro, very much so made me feel like a kid again even just the simplicity of putting a cartridge in a system or a memory card, first video I’ve seen from you and subbing just because of it
I agree. I bought Kaico a month ago and have been using my ps2 so much. I couldn't believe how GOOD ps2 still looked, especially once the most cumbersome and confusing progressive scan ever to exist, is enabled 😅
Douwert I have not forgotten about Ape Escape it one of my favorite games and 2 is amazing and 3 is great it sucks this franchise is forgotten like many other franchises on PS1 and PS2.
Yeah that's true when I said Ape Escape is my favorite I mean't to say my top 10 games but maybe a new Ape Escape would be better than 3 if they go open world then they have new ideas and the music could be better.
[Try4ce] Sorry, I don't have any of them! I played the original in the store back in the day for about 5 seconds. It's a series I've been meaning to give more of a proper try.
Piticuso Mancuso - Yeah, and if you're into PS1 & light gun games, that's definitely another reason to go CRT. U can also get a huge TV for cheap or even free!
MrCdm75 I got a very expensive Trinitron for 100 quid a couple weeks ago, a KV-21X5U. It’s beautiful. Our family brought a similar CRT (except in widescreen) back in 2002 for a thousand pounds, so I imagine my late-90’s Trinitron was at least 500 quid new because it’s the best 4:3 PAL Trinitron ever made.
I love that you used footage from my favorite game, Radiata Stories. Even if its only for a moment. Edit: OMG you used music from its OST. Thank you for this.
[Try4ce] It is, in my opinion, the PS2's best-aged game visually, so I am biased toward using it to demonstrate 480p on PS2. It's got 480p, proper widescreen support, runs at 60 frames per second, and has a charming visual style with a flat painted texture style. Can't beat that.
I just purchased a PS2 about a week ago. I’m currently buying all of the games I had back them as a kid. I really appreciate this video. I’ll be able to experience classic gameplay in an updated visual state. Thank you guys for your tile and work on this video.
[Try4ce] Haha Coury made a bit of a joke out of it. I had no idea what I'd written when I wrote it. He said it took him 20 minutes to say that line. You'll notice that he starts off saying the line really slow. Then there's a cut to finish the sentence, and it's way faster.
Use the usb.Or buy a network adaptor knockoff with the sata connector.I have a original one with Ide connected to a sd card reader. So all my ps2 games are on solid memory.Less chance of data loss.
PS2 is my favourite console of all time. Gt3, 4, splinter cell, soul reaver 2, re4, gta, tekken, hitman 2, onimusha, tenchu. So many superb games. And when developers knew the system inside out the graphics were sublime. I still own a PS2, if your going to play one on a modern TV component out with an HD upscale, however playing it on a Crt particularly sonys trinitron tech is recommended.
The Dreamcast would've had an early death either way; Sega had accumulated so much debt as a result of the 32X and Saturn's failures that the only way they would've been able to climb back out of it is if the Dreamcast sold an impossibly high number of units. The PS2 simply sped up the process.
Yeah Dont blame Sony for Sega's utter incompetence. I was the biggest Sega fan but accepted the truth. The drama between Sega's offices coupled with very poor decisions could have sank anyway company in due time.
PS2 crushed Dreamcast on hype alone with stories run in international outlets about how terrorists want them to launch missiles. Sega spent their entire Euro marketing budget on sponsoring a football team.
Except Sega of Japan actively hated their American division due to how much more success the latter had with selling the Genesis; this hatred is what bred the tensions between Sega of Japan and Sega of America that would lead to the two having virtually no communication with one another, something that played a huge role in the failures of the 32X and Saturn. Had the two divisions been more cooperative with one another, it's likely that the 32X never would've been made (as it was developed with no knowledge of the Saturn's existence until the very last minute) and the Saturn would've done a lot better.
Thanks for linking to a featured games list in the video description. Some interesting looking titles I didn't recognize. I'm definitely going to have to check out _"Game Title". "Game Title"_ looks interesting as well. There are certainly a few hidden gems left to discover on the, uh...Sega...Playstation 2... Hmm... Something seems a bit off about that list but I can't quite put my finger on it...
[Coury] Doing the game lists is something that is a hugely daunting task for us, since it would require us to make them for over 140 episodes. I think because of that, we've pushed it off longer than we should have. I make the game lists from a duplicated blog page that has a basic format as a place holder. When things calm down a bit, we hope to take care of at least two game lists per weeks, which will still take over a year to do.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you mention Dragon Quest VIII and the best setup to play it. That was literally the whole reason I started watching this video. I started to play it on PS2 on my 4K tv and it looked horrendous. After trying several workarounds (mcboot, etc) and not really knowing/wanting to use emulation, I eventually used exactly what you suggested. I found a backwards compatible PS3 off of Craigslist for $60 and I bought a Mclassic. I used the smoothing and upscaling features. I’ve been absolutely thrilled with the result. Thank you!

God I miss the days when framerate was a priority for developers. I don't care about 4k or even games running in 9k or 720p, but bring 60fps + back!
Thats what they call optimisation, that and these days games are made with console in mind and lazily ported to pc, if it was built for pc in the first place the console requirements would be higher, this is why GTA4 runs terrible even on a high end pc from now.
man those hi def closeups of dust free smudge free hardware is truly appreciated.
+Tukaw [Try4ce] Thank you! We don't get many comments like this, usually it's "GROSS clean your systems!" What they don't realize is that they are actually pretty clean before shooting, but The camera lens is so sharp that it can show dust that is much harder to see with the naked eye.
i feel you on that peace and good work
Yeah! That one right at the end hit me hard. The controller was so clean. Did they just take it out of the shrinkwrap??
To this day I think the PS2 was the most hyped gaming system of all-time. I worked in electronics at Wal-mart and we had at least 20 calls a day asking if we had any PS2s in stock after it was launched. That answer was usually no.
I’ve owned more ps2’s over the years than any other console
@Stefano Pavone probably a lot just calculate the value using price charting and make it reasonable.
Pretty sure the same thing happened to the DS. The hype was real from what I remember.
I'm changing my name to Bob Deinterlacing.
7 months later n you aint changed it bruh
daAmazin FatB0y He didn’t say he’d change his UA-cam name. He went to the government and had his birth certificate modified so that he’d be called Bob J. Deinterlacing.

I used to have 12 ps2 games, now I Have 50 PS2 games
Brayan Argandona Florentino Lol I used to have like 50 of them now I have like 15 lol

Nah. Most big channels have empty subs. Unlike here where most people subscribed actually watch the content. This channel has it where it counts, in the views.
the reason they dont is because people love old games, shit talk old consoles, and want garbage remasters

YUS! I got my HD Trinitron last year.
EposVox thanks playa
PS2 output via Component or RGB is more than good enough to enjoy the incredible library. Especially since much of the library was developed with CRTs or poor signal quality in mind. :)
Same; I still have my Slim from 2004. Love it.
I only owned a slim ps2 with a cheap lcd tv 5 years ago and have no intention of buying another one, and yet i watched this entire thing because it was so interesting
I recommend getting the component cables.
@@ajuk1 rgb with csync just because ! :D
For the PS3, the yellow light of death has finally been accurately diagnosed. It is a set of capacitors, the NEC TOKIN ones that filter power to the PS3. You can read more on it but the yellow light of death can be fixed, and once it's fixed, it is permanently fixed.
Fuck those capacitors for making me go through TWO YLODs
Any recommendations for someone to do the labor?
Even if it gets fixed, I imagine that the system will still run very hot after an hour or two of play. I always let it rest in between games just to be careful.
This sounds interesting. I'd had my PS3 _reballed_ back in the day after I ran into the YLOD, though I'm not certain if any additional repair work was done. If the (or at least one) of the issues has been diagnosed, that's good to know and probably means it'll be easier for me to take preventative action with my old BC 80gb Fat.
@@JackMeyHoffer562 I got a friend here in Germany who could do it.
Woah! We got John from DF? Dope ass episode guys!!!!
Once again someone attempts to define Nintendo and fails.
That's the reason i love the sixth generation consoles so much because after that gen, nothing came close since.

For those wondering, injected PS2 games are now much more compatible on homebrew-enabled PS3s with config files.
I’ve definitely spent the most time on the PS2. The only other console that comes close is the 360.

Not to mention on the PS1 video they showed the component quality was worse than RGB. Now all of a sudden both are the same ? WTF
@@hugo-garcia That seems reasonable to me. Component is pretty variable, depending on the console and how your display is adjusted it can be considerably worse than RGB, or about the same, or slightly better.
Man I wish you guys put the names of the games while they played! Some games I’ve never seen before!
The very same thing happened with my Xbox 360 Elite launch unit, which died of RRoD and despite MULTIPLE repair attempts by a guru, died each time)
Wow just discovered this channel, the amount of effort put into this is astounding.
Or do what I did and my the god of war collection 1 remastered on ps3. Looks so much better.
You guys never fail to make obscure information accessible while somehow tugging at my heartstrings. Hope your channel is around for a long time to come 🖤

What settings are you using? I can't get PS1 to run progressive scan. I've tried forcing it with GSM on FreeMcBoot.

PS2 + s-video on a good Sony CRT is a beautiful thing and still pleases these eyes.
SlyBeast These days, you mean?
Component is still better, but yes. CRT tv's are great and always were.
Is my 2002 Sony Trinitron CRT good???
Honestly, a few years ago I thought interlacing was a stupid and terrible idea, but after spending some time with a good CRT and some 576i vide, I’ve realised it honestly can look really good.

Me after 15 minutes: Yeah, this was worth every minute.

Oh man I love that explosion sound effect from when you pulled out the death grip cables.
my rca jacks on my CRT TV are fucked up from all the pulling out and putting in the composite cables cause i have a Atari 2600, NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, Wii, Sega Genesis Model 1 and when i want to play a different console, i swap the jacks, i should get a switch box so i don't have to put any more wear on those RCA jacks
Man, so much information flooding my mind. Good to know how PS2 will be played for the modern age. Real damn shame Sony is not following suit like Microsoft and going backwards compatibility. Then again, Nintendo isn't doing the same either.
Well, it is kinda understandable:
The PS2 and PS3 were rather specialized Hardware. emulating a PS2 even now takes a lot of CPU power - you can say roughly 10-20x that of the PS2, and the PS3 had even stranger spezialized Vector-units and other stuff.
the first Ps3 models actually had the PS2 Hardware inside to do the emulating, then some versions tried it in software (which had some problems).
Well Nintendo switch is using cartridges and wiiu used disc so it's very understandable cause switch is handheld and console
considering the chips used for the PS2 haven't been manufactured for 6 years and the cost issues with the PS3, they may have simply been turned off doing hardware emulation because of it.
with nintendo i'm glad they moved away, the gamecube hardware simply wasn't competitive anymore, no matter how much overclocking they did with it. but even the Wii U can natively play gamecube games (with a bit of softmodding and ISO ripping)
To be fair, Nintendo is porting everything from the Wii U to Switch
I wish they would.

For some reason? Not everybody worldwide had HDTVs and HDMI cables back in 2006. There were very few people that had them in that year and a lot of people were still using CRTs and composite or s-video because HDTVs and HDMI cables were expensive at the time. If you can not afford a HDTV or HDMI cables, or course you plug it in with something else other than HDMI.
I think his point is that composite was the only cable that ever came with a new PS3. Even the Super Slims from 2012 all the way until they stopped making them in 2017 only came with composite, although HDTVs were extremely common by then.
D-Ice Well, they couldn’t have bothered with Component at the very least? In 2006 people definitely had SDTVs/EDTVs capable of using component.
Blank, that's not true, either. Most people still had SDTVs, though plenty of them had component inputs, they were still limited to 480i. I *wish* that the PS3 came with component cables. :(
In 2006 I was still using a crt tv with composite
He'll i was using a crt tv with a ps3 in 2013 first time I played gta v was on one lol
This video is the perfect example of high quality content you can find only on youtube. Thanks for doing what you do.
Still thats only a temporary fix
Climatee not really. Get the IHS off the GPU and CPU and replace that thermal paste. As that is the paste that was applied quite badly many times not even even completely covering the DIE. But unfortunately it is quite hard to get the IHS off the CPU.
I replaced that thermal paste with liquid metal. So I have nothing to worry about anymore.
But really the PS3 is a terrible system to take apart and put together again.
Caruniom yeah temporary fix, as in only replacing paste above the IHS
My kid can make his own bottle, I'm watching My Life in Gaming.
How many of ya'll turned the little Playstation logo on the DVD tray when you flipped the console from horizontal to vertical?😏
Malcom McLeod I did lol
I love how they used so much Kingdom Hearts music in this video. It made me happy and nostalgic. xD
Edit: I can also really appreciate that they showed clips from Xenosaga at several points throughout the video.
I only found about about it via some obscure fourm posts and the small entry they have the playstation page on retroRGB.
know anyone who does this?
Great idea!
One of the most thorough and interesting videos I've ever watched on UA-cam.
This is high quality UA-cam. These guys are professionals!
One of the best gaming video's I've ever seen.
Just got my OSSC! Best purchase I’ve made in a long time. My PS2 games have never looked better on a HDTV
This video is so amazingly well done and so informative. Thank you for this. Takes me back to my college days.
Dude your videos inspire me to get back into gaming. Thanks for your knowledge and love for gaming. I admire that
"That one dumb game you used to play that nobody else seems to care about"
Marvel. Nemesis. the absolute go-to game for my brother and I. Broken, imbalanced, buggy, but soooo much fun.
Agreed
Apparently I am one of the few that liked Conflict Vietnam (and the other Conflict games)
I figure I played the games on a crappy Samsung Tube tv from 1995 and thought they looked great then, so this totally works for me lol
hell yeah dude! Same
Also nice seeing you here
Did the same. GT3 looks amazing still
Rewatching this video again after I have learned more. This is so thorough it’s amazing. When are you guys going to start teaching a college course on gaming?
i am so happy to see you using radiata stories in here, including its music. a SUPER under rated game, with memorable story's and good music
It was my introduction to gaming in general. I thought it was the Atari Flashback 2, but nope, the first game I ever played was Kingdom Hearts.
Reball it with proper solder.Problem solved.
I remember sending my system off to get 'reballed' by a supposed expert business on it. When I got the system back, it failed again after only a month of use.
I got one for 80$, I don't think that's expensive.
You're simply screwed when you get the yellow light. Your only solution is buying a slim model.

I am in love with your intro, very much so made me feel like a kid again even just the simplicity of putting a cartridge in a system or a memory card, first video I’ve seen from you and subbing just because of it
You can also use the HD Retrovision Component Cables for the PS2 because those cables are the best ones to get better better video quality
I agree. I bought Kaico a month ago and have been using my ps2 so much. I couldn't believe how GOOD ps2 still looked, especially once the most cumbersome and confusing progressive scan ever to exist, is enabled 😅

So the best and the cheapest choice is buying a CRT Tv :-)
Piticuso Mancuso - Yeah, and if you're into PS1 & light gun games, that's definitely another reason to go CRT. U can also get a huge TV for cheap or even free!
Yeah there's always a family trying to get rid of old ass tvs for cheap or free! god bless America
I got the crt tv for 10 bucks at thrift shop.
Yeah, my uncle gave me a giant widescreen CRT. I have to buy a new PS2, though.
Can't beat that.
oh man! that piece of footage from Virtua Fighter 4 gave me such an urge!
Game list seems broken. Was curious as to some of the footage shown.
I just purchased a PS2 about a week ago. I’m currently buying all of the games I had back them as a kid. I really appreciate this video. I’ll be able to experience classic gameplay in an updated visual state. Thank you guys for your tile and work on this video.
23:39-23:52 say that line 10 times fast.
[Try4ce] Haha Coury made a bit of a joke out of it. I had no idea what I'd written when I wrote it. He said it took him 20 minutes to say that line. You'll notice that he starts off saying the line really slow. Then there's a cut to finish the sentence, and it's way faster.
What was the sentence?
I found this very informative considering my new 4K TV didn't have a component input, and I was weighing my options for PS2 video output.
[Try4ce] The new best choice for PS2 is definitely the RetroTINK 5X. We'll have a video out on it within about a week.
@@mylifeingaming 300 USD .
Man, that's a hell lotta money for 3rd world country user.
This is the best gaming channel on youtube and it's not even close. You guys are so thorough and informative. Outstanding. A+
I get the notification for this as I'm burning off Michigan Report From Hell and messing with McBoot lol
Use the usb.Or buy a network adaptor knockoff with the sata connector.I have a original one with Ide connected to a sd card reader. So all my ps2 games are on solid memory.Less chance of data loss.
Aussie Guy I've got that too with McBoot. I just prefer having the discs... Just installed a modbo 5 chip in a slim.
34:56, absolutely golden.
Will you release RGB 211, the video for the SEGA Dreamcast? Also explain the VGA boxes.
Part of me loves the PS2 because of how great the system was.
But another part of me hates the PS2 cause of how it utterly crushed the Dreamcast.
Sega of America you mean, sure Japan has its issues but it was almost all down to American Segas stupidity that lost consumer and game maker support.
Awesome ... been waiting for this video for a long time!!!
AMAZING! WELL DONE, GUYS. THIS VIDEO IS EPIC!
Thank you!
