This, I think they removed the bloom option to force us to use compositing, they should encourage the use of compositing by "adding" new features or so, not like this
Thank you, Grant, for these videos about Blender 4.2. I'm taking baby steps to learn the craft alongside my day job. These short, to-the-point videos help me stay in touch with the development of the software and imprint notions I haven't worked much with.
i don't mind bloom being moved to compositor (although it is objectively less convenient), what i do mind is that this bloom implementation is missing most of the controls of the previous implementation and, as you've observed, looks worse. :(
It's uniform this way. Although bloom under EEVEE was convenient, now it is unified in a single solution, not two different things which had nothing to do the one with the other. And seems the compositor can work in real time now as well.
I liked them being seperate because they looked different and i didnt need to render to see the full preview. Just adds a step in my motiongraphics eevee animations now and i have to render just to actually know what itll look like.
Thanks for the tip! However, what I am missing is seeing the bloom effect in the viewport as I work on the model. Is there a workaround for that? The view node is nice but it doesn't allow to see it from different angles.
Interesting. To be honest, I didn't even know about the Bloom setting in Render Properties, I found it in the compositor nodes first and have always done it that way.
And yes the bool and glare is the place of the picture editing not for 3D modeling, yes but for games, I think that stay there from the period of when Blender is made to be a Game engine
Ok but... i still want the Bloom option back 😂, there is too much steps to follow up now to get the Bloom to work 😴, i didnt liked the changes, ill stick with the older versions of Blender for now... Thank you so much for the tutorial and for showing us how to do Bloom effect in this new version of Blender.
@@graphguy sorry but this is a very entitled stance to have. Blender is free software, they don't "need" your opinion before they change things. Most users probably haven't donated meaningfully to the foundation nor contributed any development time. Scattering random features makes for disorganized development. By adding it to compositing it likely streamlined things for them as well. I appreciate Grant providing a helpful video showing us the new way going forward
Hi. Thanks for sharing this great material. I was wondering if I need to tweak the node to make the background transparent and apply animation render, but compositing is not applied. It seems to say to use alpha over node, but can you tell me specifically how to do that?
How do you move the small yellow dots. If I try to move them they just make a new line out and ask to add a new node. So I guess I have to hold some key before dragging with the left mouse?
Does that mean the new bloom renders properly out with transparent backgrounds so it actually shows up? I remember in old Blender when you had bloom it was in the file but never showed up like when you did the same thing in other software.
I'm not able to render the image with this effect. I'm finishing my mech on the "Blender Character Creator: Sculpt and Animate Your Own Characters" course at gamedev and I'm still not able to produce a render, I either get no effect at all or a black screen render.
In compositing, are there any ways to make it so that nodes are only isolated on the object I am adding bloom to? I want a glow on an object, but I dont want this glow on everything else in the scene. Oh and Fog Glow > Bloom 100%
I understand why but I’ve noticed that eevee lags and runs poorly on my souped up 4070 laptop so what was the point of all this? Why have cycles if you just turned eevee into cycles? All my renders will still take forever now anyways. Sticking to 4.1. What a disappointment
I've noticed some serious Eevee lag in 4.2.0 as well. That and the Glare node is not quite the equivalent of legacy Bloom (e.g. the Threshold response is pretty different, bringing non-emissive surfaces into the mix too early).
How can i make it only glow on the objects in my scene taht has emission? It also adds the glow to objects that are overexposed. So i have like a building with a sun pointing at it, and at the corner of the building the sun is so bright it makes it overexpose, and when i add the glow node, it also makes the overexpose corner of my building glow, which i dont want, how can i fix taht?
With my current project I have already managed to get nearly identical results as cycles with Evee Next. I had also reduced my animation render time from 4 hours in cycles to 50 minutes then 20 in Evee. Maybe I'm biased but I think the results are gorgeous.
Dude this is a horrible change. I miss being able to click "bloom" and have everything look awesome right away. This is way more complicated than it needs to be
So annoying. And they have 0 intentions of putting that back into viewport (even tho you can get it to viewport after 5min of extra bs steps) Stil need to go to compositor to change settings. Uuuugh
No, it isn't straight forward. Straight forward was the checkbox for "Bloom".
They shouldn't force us to use the compositor. Slows production.
This, I think they removed the bloom option to force us to use compositing, they should encourage the use of compositing by "adding" new features or so, not like this
eh, the glare option is arguably more versatile than what bloom was, it's a little annoying at first but i dont think it's a big deal

@@kylejennings819you don't need to render, you can activate the viewport compositor to have the same effect as before
It’s slower this way. 😑

I spent the whole day searching, and the second day too, how to make a glow in version 4.2.🙏😇 Thanks a lot!!!! ❤
Thank you so much, very helpful!!
Many thanks for this simple and direct demonstration of the 4.2 "bloom" technique. 👍
That was dumb of the devs to remove.
1 dimensional thinking
Big thanks for sharing the new method! It will take some time to get used to doing this, or maybe I will write a script for the setup!
Thanks for the tip! However, what I am missing is seeing the bloom effect in the viewport as I work on the model. Is there a workaround for that? The view node is nice but it doesn't allow to see it from different angles.
Yes it's available in the viewport option do down
Interesting. To be honest, I didn't even know about the Bloom setting in Render Properties, I found it in the compositor nodes first and have always done it that way.
Wow, thank you that help! Sometimes I ask myself how people figure things like that out :D
Thanks, Grant. I was thinking on why my non-emission objects glow as well. I forgot to play with the Treshold
So much for accessibility and ease of use.

Unfortunately this is not imporeved features. Previous bloom effect was perfect. I hate compositor nodes. Because you can not see the result quickly.
Agreed
B3D developers need to submit proposed changes to users for evaluation with their justification.
the compositor is actually very quick now
Yeah it's quite faster than before 😊 @@grabbitt

You can just make the background transparent in the render settings which should work fine
Having to create nodes is rediculus!!!
All u had to do before is just click on BLOOM!!

Eevee next is the standard now? You don’t have to find it in the options?
No

is there a way of bloom only effecting certain objects or colours in the scene?
Maybe you can render using different layers or play with the threshold

i think so yes

I miss having bloom viewable in the viewport. I often take pictures and animate in the viewport....
Good to know... I was wondering what was this bloom thing everyone was talking about...

for some reason when I go back to layout it does not show the glow (im a beginner so Im barely know much)
You must turn on "in viewport" in options
I hate that they moved it

i cant see the bloom effect on layout can someone help
did add ons Scatter object in Blender 4.2 deleted?

Im so confused i done this the other day and it worked but now it doesnt work for me it doesnt glow
Could be the threshold. Or not hooked up to the viewer node
Replace a one click option with so many steps it needs a 3+ minutes tutorial video to know how to set up... one of the rare screw ups of the dev team
All these steps when the previous versions had a checkbox
why they removed something super simple and quick?! I swear somethings blender drives me crazy!
Give me back my bloom effects in render panel :(

"Eevee Next is better" yeah no, it's a general downgrade and just clunkier AND runs much worse all for what? Half working ray tracing?

What about Realtime?... This is not an improvement.
that's been with us since 4.1 you can go to the viewport shading settings
