Thanks for the comparison Jon. I enjoy the Bulleit a lot, while I haven't tried GD rye yet. Unfortunately GD is harder to find and a lot more expensive to get here in Poland, while Bulleit is an affordable rye! Have a good weekend
Nothing wrong with Bulleit. I really like it too, but the GD adds a little cooked brown sugar that goes well with the spice. Here, it's $10 cheaper! prices are strange. Take care
i have to cross statelines to get GD rye and it runs about $25. bulleit rye is everywhere in my area and is about $40. i like both but find i enjoy GD a lot more. great review as always
I tasted along with the Dickle rye. I also get honey on the nose and good amount of char as well on the palate. Everything you described I also get. I don’t have the regular bulleit rye. But I bought the 12 yr bulleit rye on clearance for $35. Haven’t opened it yet. Will definitely be reviewing it in 2021. Cheers Jon
My first dram of Bulleit tasted like bourbon-soaked dill pickles (yuck!); Dickel later helped me get into rye to the point that when I went back to Bulleit, I enjoyed it a ton ... thanks for putting them head to head! Cheers!
lol! Sometimes rye can hit me sideways too and the dill is just too much. Thankfully the spice and cinnamon usually balance it for me. Especially if the oak or other fruit notes comet through. Cool you stuck with it!
@@WhiskyNeighbour it took time and patience, but the rye road leads to stuff like Rittenhouse BiB and Pikesville ... so, so good. I've still not gotten to Lot 40, but I'll get there.
Never had the George Dickel but I'm a huge fan of Bulleit rye. Tonight I'm having some Sazerac. Rye is probably my favorite whiskey to drink during the holiday season.
Did this side by side myself several years ago. Really comes down to personal taste. Both MGP's 95% Rye but the Dickle goes through the charcoal pile. Cheers
Great review! The Dickle sounds interesting. My favorite budget ryes are Old Forester Rye and Lot40. The OF has a relatively high malted barley mash bill that adds some interesting flavors.
@@WhiskyNeighbour We gotta get you a bottle of the OF Rye, Jon! My favorite budget one for sure. I've had Bulliet Rye and it was okay. Will try Dickel soon. Other ryes I'm currently enjoying are Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye and Knob Creek single barrel rye and they are pretty delicious. Cheers!
@@WhiskyNeighbour I'll do, thanks! Right now I saw that it's not available where I am (Québec). But I'll definitely check it out, it's 30$ so 5$ less than Bulleit here
I’ve been wanting to try Rye for along time . So the other day I went to the store I grabbed the same two bottles that you have here ! Never saw you or the show before just looked up one of the name of one of the bottles and here I am ! I am going to try them both and I will let you know what I think. Like I said I’ve never tried rye before. !!! Cheers !
@@WhiskyNeighbour ok whiskey neighbor I tried the bullet first was a little hot for me. The George Dickel was smooth and I thought really quite good ! So I found a bottle of 10 year old whistle Pig the small batch . I really love it ! Thanks for the reviews!
Was looking at some other rye options, because once you go Lot40 you never go back, im favouring the Dickel Rye for the mellowing addition and cheaper price. Cheers Jon currently enjoying my Lot 40 as i watch this video.
Enjoyed this review Jon. Not tried either but have tried the Bulleit Bourbon, however got a bottle of the Bulleit Rye ready and waiting for Xmas games night(s) 😉
I just picked up a bottle of the Dickel for $12.20. I figured I have to try it at that price. I've liked the other rye whiskeys I've tried, including bulleit, so I'm hopeful I will like this one.
@@WhiskyNeighbour I've been sipping on it tonight and I gotta say I'm definitely a fan. I might have to go snag a couple more bottles. This is the least expensive bottle I've ever bought and it puts some of the $30+ bottles to shame.
Of all the (admittedly few) American ryes that I've tried, Rittenhouse is my favourite (Bulleit is fine, but doesn't really "knock my socks off"). Favourite Canadian rye is Lot 40. Really enjoy Forty Creek's special releases (Victory/Resolve) but don't consider them "rye" since they're mostly corn. Problem is, Rittenhouse is $60 here in BC.
Interesting...I haven't tried any of them yet I have to say...and a bit worried of too much oak & bitterness in the Bulleit, alas no George Dickel over here except sometimes the regular G.D....My favorite Rye so far are JP Wiser's Dissertation, Lot 40, Whistlepig 10 yo...I like the Few Spirits Rye I got last year but profile seems different, more leafy/mentholated....Would you recommend the Templeton Rye 4 yo or the Pikesville (the latter being pretty expensive over here in France) ? Or shall I get me a better value ? (how about Rittenhouse Rye BiB 50 % abv?)PS: That Millstone Rye is pretty intriguing as well... Thanks in advance & well done (jut noticed I forgot to sub so far ! so done now)
Pikesville is one of the best Ryes I have had, rich, spicy, but balanced. Thst said, it costs too much. Rittenhouse is great, and as you said, such a value. It is not very layered or rich, but it is bright, sweet cinnamon and rather refreshing. At least for me. I would likely try that if it is a good deal your way. Sadly I have not had Templeton yet, so I can't give any thoughts there. Thanks for subscribing! Cheers!
@@WhiskyNeighbour Cool feedback, thanks for your advises ! 👍 And you're welcome ! Hope to go back to Canada some day (got family in Ontario mainly), Cheers !

Great head to head comparison! I love both Dickel and Bulleit, but, like you, I tend to prefer the Dickel.
Cool! I would easily share a dram of either, but yes, the Dickel adds a little extra. Thanks for dropping in.
Got both in my cabinet I prefer the dickel as well

Great versus review Jon👏👍🥃. Bulleit rye isn’t amazing but it is very good for what you pay for it!
Right. It is dirt cheap around here, yet I enjoy it! Enjoy the day with Family!!
I use the Dickel for years to make a Manhatten!
A perfect use IMO. Cheers!

Dickel is my go to for Manhattans. Black walnut bitters and carpano antica. Fabulous
That does sound fabulous. Thanks for the tip!
Just what I need, I can go out and get these right now for a good price. I think I will need a change from scotch.
These are a far cry from Scotch my friend. But lots of flavour. Nothing timid here!
I'd suggest starting with the Dickel, but either way, you're going to definitely reset your Scotch palate. Happy exploring! Cheers!

And so affordable!! Crazy

I will! I haven't seen it yet, but certainly enjoy new ryes. Thanks for the tip!
