  • True Kvlt, Poser Culture, Normie vs. 'True Metalhead', real vs. fake metal. What does any of this mean anymore? And how did we get to the point where musically the lines have been drawn between what is acceptable and what is not in terms of your knowledge base and what you listen to, enjoy and believe in? In this video, I attempt to go over why poser culture exists, why its toxic and how it contradicts the very things the people who uphold it fight for in the first place.

The argumentative online sphere of fake vs. real metal, and how far you have to go to be considered equal to many metal listeners (and music listeners as a whole) is a fascinating topic to attempt to dissect. In this video, I go over why poser culture has become a toxic anomaly in the musical landscape and how it contradicts the very things people fight for. But what're your opinions on this topic?! Be sure to let me know down below!!!!!!! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

I think that maybe back in the 80s and early 90s it would make sense to pose as a metalhead, but in today's culture and what is considered cool or popular to listen to, metal is seen at least where i live as some sort of obscure genre that nobody really listens to. why would sombody pose as something that is not seen as "cool" to begin with? they don't. i don't understand why people want to gatekeep something that should be celebrated and shared across all different types of music fans.

My biggest criticism with the use of the phrase and gatekeeping in music (It’s not just metal), is when fans talk about what a “real” genre is and what a “real” of they certain genre is, they usually equate to it oldness. In theory, protecting the genre retains the qualities and the realism of the genre. But it reality, it causes more fan services, and more fan services causes more over-saturations and clichés, which is how it exactly happened to jazz and blues. In order for rock and metal to bounce back on the surface is a slew of innovations, constant changes, originalities, and accessibility to welcome newer and younger fans, which creates new. Keeping the way things like it’s 70’s and 80’s forever never works in music (I’m excluding country on this).

I graduated HS in 2012. I’d just wear a MetallicA Kill Em All tee (because that’s my favorite album) and people would ask me questions like “are you a serial killer?” or “are you a devil worshipper?” and they’d say things like “that’s outdated music. No one listens to that anymore!” Now fast forward 7 years and now those same people are wearing Metal tees and even buying denim jackets just because they saw Kim cardashian or Justin Bieber wearing it.

My tastes in metal make me incredibly difficult to label as a poser. Darkthrone, Manilla Road, Atlantean Kodex, Candlemass etc, the closest to a 'poser band' I listen to regularly is Mayhem.
However, I don't really abuse this immunity. I was a poser first. So was everyone else. Let's be real, you didn't start listening to metal with Dark Funeral, or Cirith Ungol, or fuckin Blood Incantation. My first metal bands were System of a Down and Alestorm, I was a 'poser' at one point.
I'm not saying that people who enjoy Breaking Benjamin are pussies who just 'haven't got it yet'. Just that (I know this will sound corny as hell), everyone is different. Opinions are opinions. So to all elitists (and I include myself here because I have been quite elitist at times), nobody cares. Good video, Temp. Keep it up.

As someone whos been dabbling in metal music for about 9 years (black, death, doom, and prog) but who more aligns with the goth community, I really relate to both sides of this argument.
I’ll do a bit of comparison with my deeper knowledge of goth in order to speculate on what could be causing this problem within metal.
There are a lot of people who falsely identify as goth but solely adopt the fashion aspect and base their classification off listening to Numetal or Melanie Martinez. (Egirls, Mallgoths, Marilyn Manson ect.) Over the years it has been falsely labeled, used as corporate branding and seen by the mainstream as solely aesthetic. Gatekeeping among goths is rampant for this reason. Much of the subculture has been lost to time and all but a few contemporary bands and artists exist underground away from the mainstream view, which has only further downplayed the original meaning of the culture. People become drawn to it thinking its something its not and people are tired of explaining what it is.
But even more detrimental than this is the gatekeeping and elitism that have wrecked any sense of community for newcomers and at this point even just anyone under the age of 40. I started in 2017 so I speak from experience and I really got hit with this hard. Babybats are no longer welcomed and met with patience in goth forums. Everyone is bitter and weary of outsiders and the behavior caused by this attitude is ultimately choking the subculture out of existence.
Metal culture appears even more toxic than this, but it has been far less appropriated, romanticized, sexualized, or corporately exploited. Which really makes a point about how dumb liberally using the word poser is. This subculture isn’t in the middle of passing on into the afterlife and that may be why there are so many people throwing exclusionary language around. Within metal, multiple people have welcomed me in and recommend me music. But because of this, the in and out group is not as black and white. Most goths will respect a person as goth if they have decent knowledge of any subgenre under goth, its just difference in taste between individuals. Metal it seems you may be welcomed in more freely but you also may be excluded against even if you have knowledge of the music. Excluding others in this case seems to be less of a deterrent against actual posers and more of an ego massaging exercise for insecure people with a poor scope of the genre as a whole. I would expect this usage of the word from a deathrock/gothic rock purist who insists all other subgenres and anything newer than the 90s isn’t goth, and I’m assuming metal has similar assholes. I feel poser is reasonable if a person adopts the aesthetics but doesn’t know or listen to much or any of the music. Thats what the term means to me, but even then its still juvenile and in poor taste. People who do qualify as posers typically aren’t even directly harming the culture themselves and they should not be met with agression, its just a bit irksome to people who feel like they’ve invested a lot of time and energy into getting to know their music.
Another possible problem that I see in goth music is that people unfamiliar with the genre begin labeling their music as goth for the sake of clout and the lines between what is or isn’t become blurred. At this point even an average more inclusive goth will be called an elitist for rejecting incorrectly labeled music. Metal music seems pretty distinct to me even with acknowledgement to the wide variety, and I’m unsure of how this problem could show up in this context but it wouldn’t be surprising if it did occur.
    Conclusion:
Gatekeeping is only really needed when incorrect labels are applied, whether thats public perception through the media or new music that clearly doesn’t have anything to do with said genre. By the time posers start showing up it is indicative of one of these things going wrong. Many posers are just a symptom of these problems and not the problem themselves. They often come to spaces within the subculture in an attempt to learn, and if they are treated nicely and not gatekept they will abandon the false ideas that brought them there in favor of the community. If they are met with contempt, they will join other posers under the same name without an understanding of what it is. Gatekeeping people rather than public perception and labels is whats killed the gothic subculture.
Masquerading as any subculture with no investment in learning about it is one thing, ignorance because you’re new is entirely natural. Calling someone a poser for having differing tastes than you is contradictory. The fact that they have different taste implies that they are not ignorant of the culture, that they know things you dont, and they add variety to the scene so the music doesn’t become a homogenous creatively stagnant cess pool.
The only people any scene should be keeping out are the fucking Nazis.

Why do you nicer folks want to be fitted in with people who generally don't like others? You'd get called a poser because you're a people pleaser and want people to be more friendly to each other within the community. Not everyone in the metal scene wants that, especially in parts where it is known for hatred... people quickly become annoying because something they like doesn't like them back

    • @TheMetalTempestYT
      @TheMetalTempestYT  Місяць тому +1

Oh trust me, I very much don't have any illusion of fitting in. I come from multiple communities that a large chunk of metalheads are 'intolerant' of or rather radically against, so I know firsthand how people act. I don't need any approval from others, I simply think poser culture in terms of gatekeeping is just dangerous and annoying. Hard to justify it when everyone started somewhere. I have no need for the faith of random people who're so pathetic within themselves they need to cut others down to make themselves feel better, so no worries there. I totally get where you're coming from though. But as someone who has fifteen slurs thrown at me pretty much bi-daily just for existing and breathing I've seen it LMAOO. It sometimes transcends just termonology, especially if you have a platform and don't fit the mold/criteria of others. An occasional poser comment might not phase someone who doesn't give a fuck, but overtime to someone who doesn't have as thick of skin and the ability to cope with that, I could absolutely see it hurting them in the long term. That's my take on it.

@@TheMetalTempestYT People you so call "elitists" usually don't want softer people within the community. That's why they gatekeep, if a music scene is supposed to be a certain way and people would rather that, why shouldn't we gatekeep it from others? Not everything needs to be known and not everyone wants to get along with others. Sure it's unfortunate you get slurs thrown at you, but you are quite literally involving yourself in something that no one told you to be apart of. It bothers people that you exist, because you type of folks are the reason why softer people flock to scenes that others don't WANT those type of people within the community. Gatekeeping isn't dangerous at all, it's how we keep our communities clean from people we despise, we don't want to be with people who aren't like us therefore we don't want to share with them nor get along with.

Nu-metal is fun. Dry Kill Logic and Spineshank will forever be in the rotation.

I do agree poser as a word lost a meaning, but to me a poser (in music) is a person who really just uses their music taste as their whole personality and kind of for attention. Now those kind of posers are rarely people who just discovered the genre. I mostly see people who "listen to specific genre of metal" for a longer period od time. And they have probably heard the band and their most popular songs and are focusing only on using their music taste as some kind of attention seeking like, look i listen to metal i am so different from the others while in reality you really aren't and you are just same as others.

idk man youre def not a poser but the real posers are a scourge on the metal community and are usually crazy progressives and more toxic than nsbm bands

Great video Tempest. Anyone who actually uses 'Poser' as an insult is someone who's opinion I don't give 2 shits about. Let 'em hate. They're probably closet K-Pop fans anyway. 🤷‍♂️ 😅 🍻

LMAO, you're so true for that.
At the end of the day, I really don't care what people listen to long as they enjoy it. I get wanting quality in your genres but lord, some people take it wayyy too far. Thanks for the support! :]

Why care about assholes being assholes and calling you whatever. If you know you listen to some banging music it shouldn't hurt you. It is just a sign that the cool guys are elsewhere and you shouldn't waste time with those people 😂

I honestly have such a strange taste in music (not as in avant garde or noise) I love video game music, Nu/Alt metal and power metal and Symphonic metal and pretty much fusion of any type of metal. Im pretty much open to whatever as long as its done well and GOES HARD even if its also 90s RnB or Jazz or even 2000s pop

I agree with you, I used to be a cringy eltist who calls others posers when I was 14. I don't say that elitism is bad, sometimes it's good when it's constructive and not hating on anybody. But I think calling someone a poser is stupid, also let's be real, nobody is pretending to be a metalhead in 2024 because it's not something trendy.
