  • There has been this push-and-pull mentality between the old and young members of the metal community, with some negative stereotypes existing for both. But based on a question / topic request by a friend of the channel, I dive into the nuances within this topic and why both may exist in the first place.

While we talk a lot about elitism/gatekeeping, there's another side of that coin: The negative stereotypes and reputation associated with many older people in the metal community; the veterans who paved the way for this community to be what it is today. If there is a push and pull and good and bad on both sides, why do they exist in the first place and how did they come about? Let me know down below your opinions of this topic!!!!!!! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Absolutely, we should always stand up for ourselves regardless--age isn't an excuse (young or old) to be dicks to people's music taste lmao

No real metalhead would let others disrespect the elders.

Like everything nowadays, I think the Internet has a big part to do in this. People are much more insufferable when they can hide behind a keyboard and a computer screen, and metalhead are no exception. I’m sure a lot of it stems from younger fans constantly being told their favorite bands “aren’t real metal“ and countless gatekeeping/elitism comments. Frustration for this grew over the years which is why the whole “old head“ thing came about, especially when rap was able to overcome this in 2016, meanwhile metal hasn’t really had any breakout bands to that level. BMTH and Ghost would be the closest.
I don’t go to shows very often and when I do I’m not interacting with much people besides my friends I went there with. I’m sure those who go to shows and regularly actually speak to more metalheads have a different perspective than someone like me who is jaded by interacting to people through the Internet.

Oh absolutely! For all the good that the entire have provided there is so much bad at the same time and it all circles back to being able to be nameless and believing your words won't have any effect lmao.
I'd say outside of BMTH and Ghost, you could argue Architects at their prime and nowadays with TikTok/UA-cam Shorts and literal largescale classical vocal coaches collaborating with Will that Lorna Shore's up there and potentially Spiritbox, Sleep Token and Bad Omens are pretty damn close to that level of notoriety and publicity.

Thanks for the shout out! Your video reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend many years ago on music in general. She said something along the lines of "Today's music is not as good as what we grew up on." My reply was like "And that's exactly what our parents said about our music, and their parents before them." Do I like all the genres and sub-genres that are out there? No. Am I going to say that the ones I don't like aren't "real metal?" Also no. Music (like all art) is reactionary, and is often a reaction to what preceded it. However, if you wait long enough, a new generation will discover a previous style and resurrect it or give it a new twist. Bands like Lucifer or Green Lung pay homage to early Sabbath in their sound and look. Plus, it's always nice to see artists like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Doro still turning out successful albums. May we all live long and happy lives, and be happy in the skin we're in. In the "grand scheme", life is too short to do otherwise.

That is an excellent point and one I often make. Not just with music, but society in general. Whenever I hear something along the lines of 'kids these days' I remind them that the generation before them said the exact same thing about them. I'm 42 now and I still look to the positives of the current young generation. They are incredible people making incredible music and give me real hope for the future.

i respect elders in the scene, as they supported the older bands to keep the scene going, and the older bands themselves, obviously, for making some really cool music and paving the way for a lot of other very interesting music to come. But sometimes, "old-heads" are very dismissive about the stuff past the year 2000 and that is extremely annoying, especially when you see that their taste is super surface-level and they are not willing to discover anything else.
But on the other hand, there are a ton of young pseudo-hipster metal fans that dismiss anything that has a '-core' in the name of the genre (except for grindcore, which was always funny to me), solely because it's 'not real metal, has (slightly) different riffs and breakdowns, fuk dat' (i'm pretty sure many of them secretly enjoy it, just have to hide to it to look cool and 'kvlt' within their small group).
Both of these groups are just making it worse for bands and fans and are trying to ruin everyone else's experience.
I'd say, in every part of every community, there are dumb/bad/annoying people and we need to just ignore them and try to communicate with the like-minded individuals, no matter what their age is.

I'm 53 now, so I'm entering that niche now haha.. Best thing about this age and being a metalhead is that I've been largely present during the entire genre starting and growing.. Born the same year as Sabbath's first LP, became a fan of metal through NWOBHM and a die hard Maiden fan at 11.. watched it grow and discovered all the sub genres as they happened, Thrash, Black, Grindcore and Death Metal.. and now Deathcore, Djent, Slam and whatever Electric Callboy are! Love it all.. apart from Power and Symphonic Metal.. just not my bag. I'll be buried in a black coffin and dressed head to foot in black and Number of the Beast will play as I'm lowered in the ground.. or go up the chimney. Metal is Metal, no matter what the sub genre.. believe me, we are sooooo fucking lucky to have so many bands, sub genres, records, tours and merch at our fingertips, and largely just accepted within our own ranks and society in general. In the early 80s it was tough... hardly any bands.. at least really good ones, hard work to get t shirts, constant bullying for being the weird kid (see Stranger Things, Rivers Edge and Trick or Treat) and parents who hated your record collection and cried about where they went wrong as parents hahaha. I am so happy right now with our scene, honestly, if 12 year old me could see and hear the bands today- mind fucking blown. I do 10 or so gigs a year.. Just seen Cattle Decapitation and 200 Stab Wounds and Baest this year, got Cannibal Corpse, Anthrax w. Kreator and Testament, Gatecreeper coming at the end of the year and probably a ton of stuff yet to be announced in between. There are like a thousand podcasts on here for Metal tying the community together and I know Metalheads from all over the world. This is the best our scene has ever been and I'm so fucking lucky to be part of it. We all are. 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Absolutely adored this comment and you hit the nail on the head of my philosophy, too. We all started somewhere, young or old...it's truly such a baffling mistake to me to deny people that gateway into the scene and to pick and choose what is correct or not. That last comment his so close to him! Also LOL whatever Electronic Callboy are! Usually they get called electronicore lol. I'd adore seeing Cattle Decapitation life though, how was that?!

I'm 54 I actually like a lot of the new metal...what passes for pop music is another story. My only real complaint really has nothing to do with age but how the crowds have boring the crowds have become. They just stand there. Maybe this is a regional thing, living in MA but I've been to a few metals shows the past few years and the crowd just does nothing, and these were crowds of both young and old.

Honestly this newer generation of Metalheads, scene kids are not only the worst to older fans, but to also the bands themselves. Just look at Bad Omens, Slipknot, Sleep Token, Architects, Parkway drive, the list goes on but my point being I’ve never seen so many new generation of metal listeners be so toxic and disrespectful when interacting with old fans and the bands they listen to.

Great topic, Tempest. Im almost 42, but the only way I show my age at a concert is that I prefer to get good seats & enjoy the show. Lost interest in the mosh pits, though it has more to do with an aversion to sweaty dudes.
HOWEVER if ur fucking 40 & still attending a Raves, ur a creeper & should be on the FBI watch list alongside Baby Metal fans

interesting question. I have thoughts on it.
First and foremost, I hate the new layout of UA-cam. I hate this whole on the side Comments. FU UA-cam.
    The rest..
I'm an over 50 Transgender Bisexual Woman, who has been into Gothic and Metal music since the 80s. My Heart will always be held by Early Thrash Metal and Early Death Rock (ST & Christian Death) Yes I'm from LA, Yes I was a Skater.
When I was Younger it was something new and rebellious while now it's fully a part of our culture. So the ageism is based on typical problems between the generations, which is sad because "Underground Music culture" is mostly dead in some genres, while others like Goth and Metal tend to be timeless. Sadly Gothic music split into several very different sub-sub cultures and is no longer growing, Metal is growing thanks to younger peoples frustrations with society and the directions it has been going the last 24 years.
Basically ageism in Metal is just the normal human battle between generations, what I find more disturbing is the rise of the Reich Wing in metal, when they don't get it. Metal was formed as a rebellion to conservative philosophy and most of the Early bands and leaders in Metal were either queer, communist, or liberal anarchists. So for conservative right wing christian nationalist to be into Metal is annoying to me.
For me Your Youth is no issue, Your flexibility with fashion roles is no issue, but coming out a Christian bothers me.
As I have a deep set hatred of all things monotheism at this point.
TL;DR, ageism is sadly a human thing, Right Wingers are bad. And FU UA-cam and the Side Comments.
    Edit:
I should point out, I'm not an elitist jerk with music, only video gaymes. I will listen to just about anything Punk, Metal, Gothic, Industrial, and most related genres. I will even listen to Kawaii Metal... honestly I love a lot of Japanese Darker Music ... I really love visual kei ... Malice Mizer, Moi dix Mois, etc...
