You absolute legend! I was working on my '05 Scion tc for many hours trying to get the driver side axle out. It has the same recessed axle. It popped out on the first strike using the vise grips and slide hammer. I was so happy!
This is some seriously good advice. I tried this on a 2007 Volvo S40 T5....Volvo sells a "special tool" to fit in the tiny recessed space behind the axle, but even those using the special tool is still difficult to get the shaft out. So instead of buying the Volvo special tool, invest in the slide hammer with vice grip attachment (as it has multi-uses) and it pulled the shaft in one single hit. Thanks Scotty.
That's just bloody brilliant, so simple and clever. I've been thinkin' of getting a slide hammer puller thing because of minor dent repair, I'm doing a paint and body course. Good stuff, thanks again Scotty.
Fantastic information. That drive shaft cup also drives me nuts, slows a clutch job down, i need to buy this. Afterwards i find it easier to tap with cup in the gearbox with an extension bar and hammer and connect the drive shaft after, ive not had much luck pushing the whole unit in.
Scotty, i hope u will upload the video explaining how to disapart wheel bearing and cv joint soon. Cuz my hyundai ef sonata has some problem on cv joint, but it is not easy to disapart wheel bearing from the cv joint.
I recently changed both cv axels om my camry 2.2 98. The left side was stuck. I used a cable and a sledge hammer. I tied the cable around the back of the axel where it goes in to the diff housing and the othe end to the hammer. Then used a golf putting action with the hammer and out it popped. Only cost 15 bucks for the cable.
How do you remove a stuck outer CV joint from the axle? I've used a hammer, then a tie rod fork with a clamp on the axle to pry the joint off. Neither made it budge. What's the trick for outer joints that are stuck?
Scotty, My 1988 porsche 944 will not start. I think it could be the fuel pump because when I took it off the trailer it started and it drove off, but on the way into my garage it died and wouldn't start. Is this the only thing it could be or is there more. I tried pressure testing but the port on the tester was too small for my shrader valve. It would only stay on the end and not spin all the way down, but even with the tester only on the end of the valve I read 0 pressure. Thanks and keep those vids coming they are really helpful!
pray it's just a bad fuel pump, you could remove the valve on the port, and put on a rubber fuel line piece to hook up to a pressure tests, that's a cheap option.
I will try that. Are DME's expensive to fix or would I be better off finding a replacement. I heard that is kind of common on this car. I hope thats not the problem though.
I have also had success with bolting a chain around the axle nice and tight so it wont slip, and attaching the other end of the chain to a large crow bar or hammer and swinging outward. I actually made a video showing me doing this on my channel. Works GREAT!

Scotty I have a question. I have a 2010 Chevy Cobalt. The metal flap to the entrance of the gas tank has disappeared I looked around on the internet and most people have said that they have fallen into the tank. I also read that it can get jammed in the check valve and give you a check engine light and cruddy gas millage My question is, how can I get the metal flap out of the tank. and 2 can I buy a new flap or do I have to get a whole new tube? and 3 what causes the flaps to fall in?
Scotty Kilmer I have read of people having it get stuck and having troubles filling up there tank because of it. is that a possibility or will it cause no problems? and another question is why do i get cruddy gas millage when that fell in?
I assume its too big to pass into the fuel pump right? If your car has easy access to the fuel pump from under the back seat that might be an option. Or if that flap is magnetic-metal maybe a snake magnet down the filler tube? If the flap failed before it will fail again, try think of another option if you want to protect the fuel filler tube opening. Stay gold.

I took my truck to the Chevy dealership about my speedometer and they said they can't find what's wrong with it and they think it's because of the lift on it and they need to put all factory parts back on the truck the the speedometer
I've used one of these before. I was working on a 2002ish Chevy Impala that needed a new front wheel bearing. Actually belonged to my shop teacher's wife. The old bearing was practically welded to the knuckle by mother nature and my teacher instructed me to use one of these on it. Well the version we have is a bit bigger and heavier duty than yours and ended up tearing the bearing apart. The rest of the bearing had to be punched out. In a slightly humorous twist, the cheap part my teacher bought off the internet for this car turned out to be a wee bit too small for the axle. So we grabbed the half inch impact and made it fit, with the help of a very generous coating of anti-seize. I hope the next time that bearing needs to be replaced I won't be the one who gets the assignment.
I had a 1996 Kia sephia that I changed the axles in years ago ,I yanked and tugged and pried and beat and called it everything in the book , I thought shizzit I will just go to autozone and get a slide hammer this will get that axle end out of the tranny , I hooked it up yanked and tugged until I about pulled the car off the jacks and it kept putting it on and yanking and tugging ,I drilled a hole in the side of that axle piece and took a piece of heavy duty chain and I stuck a master lock through the hole and connected the chain with the lock yanked and tugged and broke the lock ,, I was going through the ceiling now pizzised off I said hell with it and went to the junk yard and pulled a transmission with a good axle connected still in the tranny ,, I put that tyranny and axle into my car and I'll be dammed I got a bad tranny and it slipped big time ( automatic tranny ) I put some stuff in that was supposed to make it stop slipping and it slipped twice as bad had a 30 day return on the tranny ,drove it slipping for a month then yanked it and got another tranny ,, got lucky on the second tranny ha ha. ,what a nightmare
Are you kidding me? You gotta use a lot more musle that that to get that thing out. It took me forever. Then installing it you need muscle just to seat it back in. I used a piece of wood and my brother used a dang sledge hammer while I was holding it hahaha.

Yes
No.alternator is the one that charges the car battery. As long as your battery is charged, its just sharing enough juice to jumpstart a weak battery.
Today's alternators have minimum spec amperage diodes and circuitry... basically the car must be running...fast idle preferable when the jumper cables attached...if the voltage falls below ~11.8 volts...when starting the other car....yes, you risk blowing out the regulator (diodes-filters circuits) but it's rare if you do it right, The wrong way and VERY Common way people do it...is they attach jumper cables first without the motor running...jumping battery to battery...and then trying to start the dead car...you'll most definitely blow the regulator. Hey Scotty I'm working on a 1995 ford kent engine industria 1.1L im having a difficult time finding parts piston rings, Bering's ,seals etc what car or other engine's are compatible

What brand slide hammer is that you are using?

If my speedometer is off what may be all the causes to that?
wrong size tires, or a broken speed sensor, OR a broken speedo head in the dash. Good luck

hey scotty I have a 1988 jeep wrangler yj 2.5 and im not getting any power out of it, it'll get up to 45 mph pretty good anything pass that is a struggle, any suggestions on what the problem could be ?
I swear when I first read that title, I thought it said "sledgehammer".
...Well, okay if you say so lol
Word of caution using the slide hammer, be careful on how your hand is griping the slide it will smash some meat off your hand. You will only do that once though, just want to save someone the pain.
show us a video on how to clean up a dump like the place you are at
Bless this mess. I know where everything is.
Genius!!!
I took my truck to the Chevy dealership about my speedometer and they said they can't find what's wrong with it and they think it's because of the lift on it and they need to put all factory parts back on the truck the the speedometer
Used a slightly different version of this when I would fix Surgery tables...
Looks like a tool that dentist would use
Tried it. And still stuck.
I hope the next time that bearing needs to be replaced I won't be the one who gets the assignment.
why didnt you tell me to buy this before i started trying to swap my cv axles. bad scotty.
every time i pass by this video, i swear it says "sledgehammer"

Scotty Kilmer I live in Michigan! November has been worse than December this year. Hope this keeps up.

I seen the snow we got 5 feet of snow !!!
I had a 1996 Kia sephia that I changed the axles in years ago ,I yanked and tugged and pried and beat and called it everything in the book , I thought shizzit I will just go to autozone and get a slide hammer this will get that axle end out of the tranny , I hooked it up yanked and tugged until I about pulled the car off the jacks and it kept putting it on and yanking and tugging ,I drilled a hole in the side of that axle piece and took a piece of heavy duty chain and I stuck a master lock through the hole and connected the chain with the lock yanked and tugged and broke the lock ,, I was going through the ceiling now pizzised off I said hell with it and went to the junk yard and pulled a transmission with a good axle connected still in the tranny ,, I put that tyranny and axle into my car and I'll be dammed I got a bad tranny and it slipped big time ( automatic tranny ) I put some stuff in that was supposed to make it stop slipping and it slipped twice as bad had a 30 day return on the tranny ,drove it slipping for a month then yanked it and got another tranny ,, got lucky on the second tranny ha ha. ,what a nightmare
lol I know this comment is old but wow that is a crazy amount of effort to go towards an old Kia.
Are you kidding me? You gotta use a lot more musle that that to get that thing out. It took me forever.
Then installing it you need muscle just to seat it back in. I used a piece of wood and my brother used a dang sledge hammer while I was holding it hahaha.
Rip
wow a 12 point axle nut they dont want people fixing their own stuff do they the only place ii could think of to get one is on a tool truck
moocow7590 All toyotas I've seen use those. The aftermarket replacements come with a 6 point nut. Just about all the auto parts stores carry the 12 point 30mm socket.
