Scotty, I have a 2008 Corolla and when I start it up when the engine is cold it has a knocking sound but as the car gets to operating temperature the noise seems to fade out. Any clue what’s wrong? Worn piston rings?
Good to see you making more fix it videos like in the old days! you taught me how to work on cars with your youtube videos about 6 years ago and i been watching ever since! thanks for all you do Scotty!
Can you make a video about 5 Trucks That Will Last 300,000 Miles or a Long Time etc? I think a lot of your subscribers would love to know of some great and reliable “older” trucks. Maybe even some newer ones.
You always have good advice. I am 71 and started working with my dad at age 10 at his first Gulf Station in Florida in 1958. We went from a small 3 pump station to the largest full service station in Florida with 13 pumps, two service bays and 1 wash bay. (excluding the big truck stop at 75 and the Sunshine Parkway). My father taught me honesty, good service, maintenance and keeping a clean business. I have had 5 shoulder surgeries and a neck surgery with 3 fusions and 2 titanium plates, so my repair days are over and I miss the hell out of it. The old professor
Lol I just had to do both of these in my 02 Monte Carlo in two weeks. Replaced a Cardone after only 3 years! What in the world could have caused that?! The boot was torn wide open. Ah well. I already knew how to replace them but one of Scotty's earlier videos helped me with these two by remembering his energetic and humorous nature while working! Thanks, man.
Realistically it would take a few hours... but I'm with J Dial, the way I DON'T handle heat and humidity nowadays.. it prolly WOULD take lots of breaks and a few days too lol Dontcha just love the magic of the internet 😂😂😂😂😂
My old beater car, a 1993 Hyundai Excel 1.3L sedan, is making the same clacking sound... bought the whole assembly including CV joints a few hours ago; will replace the old assembly with a newly purchased one tomorrow. Thanks for the video. Keep 'em coming!
Brian Gonzalez don't pay any attention to that remark! Corolla's may not be tons of fun to drive, but reliable as hell! I just noticed today how many older ones are still on the road! I saw at least 10 pre 1998!
I'm amazed he skipped a VERY important detail I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS scribe a outline of the strut mount so I can put it back exactly just last week my buddy replaced axles and didn't do this.. It drove all sorts of crazy
One day I’m gonna try to fix so something on my car by watching a Scotty video. *5 hours later* “Hi, yeah I need my car towed. It’s really broken now.”
Dr. Scotty: Thanks for the tutorial on the axle/CV replacement! I hope to finish my attempt at that project with 10 fingers. ...actually, 8 fingers and two thumbs.
I literally just did this exact job on my old ‘91 Taurus and it was as simple as Scotty showed. I payed hundreds to a shop to have this done before when the part cost me $75 🤦🏻♂️
One tool you’re going to need is a torque wrench the bolts to the struts need to be torqued to a specific tightness as well as the nut on the tie rod as well as the hub nut. Not all CV shafts have cotter pins on the hub nut. I recently did one of these on a 2002 Saturn and it took less than an hour. Anyone can do this job. Some cars will require a wheel alignment after disassembling the strut and reassembling it again but if you make a mark on the strut with a sharpie and line it back up again you can probably get away without doing an alignment.
Caution...... the bolts and bolt holes on the shock strut that hold the wheel hub in place....many cars don't have an elongated hole in this area to change camber. Only a tight-fit circular hole for each of the 2 bolts. So taking the bolts out and back in WILL NOT affect alignement. Same deal when taking the tie-rod ball joint out and back in. The shaft is tapered and goes back in the way it came out......don't mess with the adjustment by rotating the housing....keep it where it is...and you'll be fine.
Just becareful when buying CV axle online. I took someone's car to get an alignment after they CV axle was replaced n it came apart when I was driving. It was proven defective.
If your car makes a clacking sound when you turn, first check the lug nuts. A friend of mine hit something in the road one evening in Dallas, and his front tire lost air. So he took his car to a tire shop just off the highway. They patched the tire & put it back on his car, but he noticed that there was a clack/clunk noise when he turned right the next day. Lo & behold, the lug nuts were all loose on that wheel.
I was surprised to see you remove the bolts from the bottom of the strut, I was always told that even if your strut bolts aren't cam bolts the slop in the holes will change your alignment, we always remove the lower ball joint, than no alignment needed after repairs.
I don't know how you make everything so easy but I love it.. gives me hope. I just replaced my CV shaft along with my wheel bearing and brake pads with much help from you. Thanks Kilmer!
replaced mine this week. 2006 Kia Spectra 239k. one boot was split, rest were throwing grease. the part was Cardone select. 42$ each. Noticed the steering wheel less vibration and shimmy at 70 to 80 mph. If you do not have air tools, and electric torque gun is useful. or a big long pipe for a lever. Scotty takes the time to tripod and edit. The grease tip on the C Clip is spot on.
You make things look so simple and easy scotty! A real pro! Thanks for taking the time to make these videos they are much appreciated! So entertaining to watch with the images. I bet you're a fun guy to hang out with 😂
Yesterday I took my 1998 Volvo to the junk yard, both cv joints were bad, along with both struts. It was going to cost more to repair the car than it was worth. I'm glad I saw the video after I got rid of the car, other wise I may have tried the repair my self. Thanks for another great video Scotty.
I recall replacing cv joints with rebuilt axles back in mid 90’s. That’s been the way to go for a long time. Only wish I had an electric impact wrench back in those days. What a godsend that tool is!

Nicely done. My '88 Mercury Tracer had a problem for a few months that I was negligent to get done in a timely fashion. I'd be driving down the road and abruptly it felt like a giant, invisible hand had pushed me sideways. This would happen from time to time. Finally, I got concerned for my safety...for good reason. Truth be known, it was a ball joint that was so worn out it was trying to pop out of its socket. I thank God for His sovereign protection as I drove around with that accident waiting to happen. It's been just over a couple of decades since that incident, but I remember those moments quite clearly.
Wow praise the Lord for that one! There were definitely some guardian angels with you during that time. And then God was able to use that to teach you something as well. All things work together for the good to those who love him and are called according to his purposes.
Yeah... AMEN to that. I was a bit unsettled when the mechanic brought me back to where he was working on the car and my lower jaw must have been banging on the floor a few times before my mouth closed. I was in total disbelief.
@@Pantherman63 yes i can imagine! at times like that you realize how much God really does protect his sheep! God bless you that was a great testimony to God's love and protection!
Changed my left front outer cv joint a week ago for a $25 for parts and $10 for labor :) No more clacking when turning left, no more lagging when shifting gears, it felt more solid power transfer to both front wheels Thank you SK
Hey Scotty, Fiat-Chrysler are NOT going to merge with Renault! AND Renault plans to release a true self driving car 2020--so your prediction about TESLA getting competition is coming true!
He usually hits "what it goes through" with the hammer, I guess not this time, haha. I use a ball joint separator. Only time I have used the hammer was at the junk yard.
Obviously not personally, your still here and unless you know someone retarted enough to let both or all their axles sheer off the ball bearings and axels and happen to lose acceleration, and not be able to steer to safety then yes this and and a pencil are are also lethal.
Well in his last video according to Scotty he lost two hours of his life because a window switch failed to work. If that was lethal enough to rob him of his precious time on Earth then it is not hard to imagine how a clankkity clank sound can even put his life in jeopardy.
You make it look easy. Well done. I recently paid $400 in labour to get my two drive shafts replaced on my ‘91 Camry. If had known about your video I could of easy had DIY to save money.

Scotty tunes his piano with a hammer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Nope, with a 5K scan tool. ;D
Stick it in the hole! “That’s what she said!”😂😂😂.. killing me!
Hey Scotty, what do you think about the quality of ZF automatic transmission?
Kartik Sinha 8 speeds on BMWs tend to have problems. Something with some chains inside them. Cost fortune to repair, at least in Europe here.
@@wellwh0 thank you for the quick response. I was just wondering about the one ones they have on the jeep compass.
Changed my left front outer cv joint a week ago for a $25 for parts and $10 for labor :)
No more clacking when turning left, no more lagging when shifting gears, it felt more solid power transfer to both front wheels
Thank you SK
On Toyota it's easier to unbolt the lower ball joint instead of messing up the alignment by separating the strut.
I gotta do this next weekend when funds get back up. I just bought a car for 1000 bucks and passenger side needs replacing. Thx for the video
This is the first time I’ve ever seen a Scotty video before it even has any views yet lmao
Scotty forever on point with the pics!
Hey Scotty,
Fiat-Chrysler are NOT going to merge with Renault! AND Renault plans to release a true self driving car 2020--so your prediction about TESLA getting competition is coming true!
And just like that, you did that whole job in just over 4 minutes. You make it look so easy!
Incorrect method of tie rod removal. Thread is soft steel. No.
Yes always use the proper tool to remove those. Tie rod pullers.
He usually hits "what it goes through" with the hammer, I guess not this time, haha. I use a ball joint separator. Only time I have used the hammer was at the junk yard.
This video perfectly describes the issue I've had going on since I got my car back from the dealership for a transmission replacement.
This looks like a hard task but it can be done with patience I guess. Patience is the virtue.😐😐😐😐
Patience and some good 'ol fashioned manliness 👍
How come you didn't show torquing the axle nut so it wont wear out the wheel bearing from being too tight?
Why does everything have to kill you according to Scotty?!?
😂😂😂
I can personally say that a CV axle failure can most definitely get you killed.
Luis Ramirez yes, if you don't take care of it, and it actually breaks, you could lose control of the car! The " clacking sound is your warning!
Hmm...what does this have to do with the vids title though ? Did the clanking almost kill him ? :)
A failed CV axle could cause an accident, especially at high speeds.
@@hanskinslo326 Well that could have been pointed out in the vid ;)
Lol Scotty representing HTOWN with that slow motion at 0:37
