Scotty Kilmer i was wondering my chevy astro is making like grinding sound only when i turn right and i cannot find rwd cv joints for my 04 chevy astro
Scotty Kilmer hey I got one for you . what if it makes the same exact noise as that but only all the way to the left and it's a rear wheel drive truck ....
Dear Mr. Kilmer, I watch your videos regularly and really love them. I am facing a peculiar problem with my car which is just 1 year old. While accelerating at low rpm, I can hear clunking sounds coming from below the engine bay on the driver side. Also when the car hits bumpy roads and there's rhythmic bumps there's clunking simultaneously. My car service people could not find the problem. I changed the motor mount, but the problem persists. what can it be? I feel like I'm driving a 10 year old car with the irritating clunks.
Just like every video. Someone did it 50 times and shows you how. I think "oh I can do that you say it only takes an hour huh?" Then 8 hours later I'm curled up in a ball in a corner wondering where my life went wrong.
Yeah, Simple, I think we've all been there. When I finish a repair or maintenance job I'm usually kind of proud of myself. Then I notice that extra part I forgot to install. It's a good day, if I can remember where it went. Otherwise it's back to Google while trying not to get too much grease on the keyboard.
I sure like your videos Scotty. They're short and to the point in 2 to 4 minutes or so. I don't need to watch someone take off nuts and bolts in a 26 minute video on how to remove a tire for example. And you're entertaining. You deserve that Emmy.
Or listen to them describe how their back is hurting, they had to drive to 5 stores to get the part, their income/job challenges currently, their beautiful tool kit they bought for $59 at Walmart, etc... SMH These types of videos get about 30 seconds of my attention, then we're done... Good Catch Charlie... Good catch!
These videos are fascinating and I can't stop watching them, even though I will readily admit that at no point in my lifetime will I ever even consider attempting any of these repairs.
Scotty, you made this look so quick and easy, I know it’s going to take me all day just to figure out what I need to do. My mechanic won’t work on my car if it still gets me from point A to point B. That is why I’ve been driving my 04 crv with front end noise when I’m making slow sharp turns in parking lots for the last year or so. Thanks for the great information. James
heres a tip for those that don't have a pipe like mr scotty is using,if you have a big floor jack like mine,i think its like a 5 ton or something, you just remove the pipe off the floor jack and use it.now i used this when replacing the wheel bearing on a 1995 gmc z71 truck and those nuts are really on tight but no problem.take it easy good luck see ya and all that
Thank you Scotty, you are good man. Sharing your knowledge is a wonderful gift! I didn't have a dad growing up to show or share with me the tips and advise that i have learned from you over the years!! Thank you!!! 😊
Great video Scott!! It’s a little more difficult up here in NEW England USA Due to RUST!! just did the job yesterday. You have to take off the Bearing mount (3 bolts) pull it right out mount and all THEN take off the retention ring and bottom set srew. THE Bearing Collar is rust welded to the mount. We cut the shaft back 2” from the mount, broke off the bearing grease cap then heated along the inside collet seat with a mini touch (glowing hot) rapped it out with a sledge hammer. Put the mount bracket and retention ring and set srew on the new shaft outside the vehicle then with the 3 mount bolts put it back in **side note** we used grease on Both ends of the splindles 👍
Side note for this video...every CV axle I've ever replaced needed a little persuasion when coming out of the transmission. Using a good pry bar, wedge the pry bar between the transmission housing and the CV housing and "pop" them out. On this car in this episode, the inner axle spindle has a C-clip that keeps it from falling out. Also if you live in an area where you get snow SOMETIMES the outer axle CV shaft will "freeze" itself in the steering knuckle. Some penetrant and an impact hammer with a point bit (sitting in the center of the axle shaft) usually does the trick. Happy wrenching everyone! -Bandito Brothers
Hey Scotty :) I just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work on your videos! I'm not to bright when it comes to cars but your videos make it nice and simple for me to understand what the heck I'm looking for and what I need to do. Thank you!! :)

And remember, every TUESDAY I upload a new video on the scotty kilmer channel on UA-cam, ua-cam.com/users/scottykilmer , so don’t miss them.
Great video. I did this exact job on my 02 Camry just a few months ago. That clip is annoying as all hell to get back into position. It looks deceptively easy in this video but every time you think it's seated, the opposite side pops out. My hand actually slipped on the pliers after what must have been 30-45 minutes of fighting it and it magically seated correctly just by accident.
You sir, have impeccable timing! My car just recently started making that noise under the same conditions and I was wondering what it was. You're the best, thank you!
"Lot of times they send you the wrong one", I will realize when I already took off everything and can't drive anymore lol. It looks so easy when scotty does these kind of fixes, when you really try it in your car you will figure out its a pain in the ass lol.
He disconnected the strut to knuckle bolts which have a camber adjustment. Scotty should've at least showed to mark the relationship of the strut to knuckle so you could realign it close enough. But yes this car does need an alignment now
David Krapenschitz not necessarily true. I'm guessing ur definitely not a mechanic so I don't think ur qualified to give advice and fake ur knowledge on this topic.
You are the best mechanic.. You make it look so easy.. And i love all your videos.. Thank for showing that.. Iam learning a lot with your videos.... Iam a painter
Hail Scotty greetings from trinidad... Please note we don't call it pipe in trinidad.... It is called torque multiplier...... To aid in breaking out stubborn nuts!
Hey Scotty, I know you can't cover EVERY possible step in these videos, but handling the brake rotor with the grease on your hands/gloves from the CV replacement will need to be cleaned off the rotor before reattaching the wheel to ensure the grease is NOT burnished into the brake rotor, causing a pulsing when braking. I had to learn that the hard way on my old car.
I have found a brake pad looseness with the caliper (almost nothing, but touch it make a horrible clank noise like the explain in your video), change it solve the problem with the noise, but I'll change the bearings for sure, thanks Scotty for take time to answer me, I have seen your videos for long time.
They drove the car with obviously bad cv joints, cracked winshield, yet had those shiny new green "nitro fill" valve stem caps... I bet the car smelled like weed....
Joseph DiSalvo which is kind of what I was hinting at. Why even bother to nitro fill thar ugly ass steel wheel with pure nitrogen vs the regular old 78% kind. Though I do remember in middle school we used to take those off the teachers cars at school and play pencil break with them. Our term in the day was for the metal ones, we called them "chromy's"
South Main Auto Repair lol you know its true, I take it from the name you work in the auto repair biz too... scotty can't bash his customers, but when you work on other people's cars you tend to notice things that usually go hand in hand with other things...
I'm really glad I just watched this one, because I drive the same car he used in the video and it could use some new CV axles but I didn't realize it was this simple, so I've been putting it off. Will be doing that and probably new struts very soon.
I have this problem still after replacing both cv axles on my fwd Mazda cx9. the second mechanic told me its not the axles but the differential. does that sound right? I dont want to waste money replacing the differential if its not that
Here in Ohio the carrier bearing on the driveshaft is always frozen to the bracket it slides into. We always have to cut them out with a torch at the dealership if the car is more than 3 or 4 years old. Gotta love living in the rust belt! We are currently changing out frames on Tacoma nod Tundra trucks because of the rust problems. Nice video!
I think this is the 2nd cv video you have posted but it's great to see it done on another vehicle. Did this on my car and made a world of difference. If suggest putting a new seal on if you have the axle out since it's cheap and can get damaged when removing the old axle
i appreciate this soo much scotty!! I live here Houston as well, and recently saw my brother purchase a 02 malibu as a starter car and out of nowhere it started making that noise and we thought it was because the front bumper was loose and was scrapping the tire, but now i know what it is and what i needs to do. Thanks
We did this job on my little brother's 1998 Chevy Prizm a few days ago. Getting the CV axle out was a pain in the butt, but once it was off the rest was easy.
Hey scotty, great videos. I have a 96 camry, I did both axles on. That carrier bearing was a nightmare to remove. Air hammer and a pry bar did the trick tho.. thanks
Hey Scotty. Thanks for the video. I feel like this was based off the question that I asked you last week about my car making a noise as I turned right. As soon as I saw this I thought that lol. Another great video
You know he’s good and know what he’s doing when you fix a car in a jacket and shades on. I don’t even k ow what he did for looking to see was he going to get any oil or dirt on himself. (NEVER DID)👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you scotty for you fun and simple videos...i really enjoy them and they have giving me alot of confidence in myself and saved me alot of money. As a female and a single mom never being able afford expensive cars...your videos have made my life so much easyier...so thank you
After busting my knuckles and saying every curse word in the book I took a break to make sure I was doing things right, came across your videos and not only do you make them fun, I'm not upset anymore, oh and now I'm missing home which is Michigan..wait, no I'm not, it's cold there, lol. Much love and aloha brother, thanks for the videos.
good day sir. any videos of what could possibly be wrong in my cars differential. i hear "clunk" sound when changing gears. and continues clunking sound when running slow at 3rd gear. Thank you for making such videos. We've learned a lot.

LOVE your videos, Scotty.
yup!

most car repairs are pretty easy if you know how to do them, and have the tools. it also helps if you actually enjoy doing it.

“With enough wiggling you can get the balls in” 3:16
Bolts, not balls
Glad I'm not the only one who uses a huge pipe on his breaking bar to take off wheel nuts - great video!
Make sure yall get an alignment after any suspension work. Especially the CV joints.
Most cars I've driven don't require an alignment after a CV axle change. Tie rods, ball joints, etc...yes.
He disconnected the strut to knuckle bolts which have a camber adjustment. Scotty should've at least showed to mark the relationship of the strut to knuckle so you could realign it close enough. But yes this car does need an alignment now
Agree. Mark or spray bolts before remove.

I think you already know the answer to that.
I’m off to do mine now. Only tools I’ve got is a screwdriver and a spirit level, but after watching this I’m confident I can do it.
Scotty do you take students, I would like to learn from you sir?

Hail Scotty greetings from trinidad... Please note we don't call it pipe in trinidad.... It is called torque multiplier...... To aid in breaking out stubborn nuts!

I had to learn that the hard way on my old car.
Still got the humor in you. Great videos Scotty!
Hi Scotty, This video was very useful. I am a very choosy person. But I like the way you explain everything. Well wishes for you.
how about the rear wheel drive?
+bobby z that's a good question ! I have a 99 Blazer rear wheel drive !
I have the same noise in rear wheel drive :(
some RWD vehicles have cv joints back there. If not, often worn axle bearings do that
I have found a brake pad looseness with the caliper (almost nothing, but touch it make a horrible clank noise like the explain in your video), change it solve the problem with the noise, but I'll change the bearings for sure, thanks Scotty for take time to answer me, I have seen your videos for long time.

no, it smelled like mold cause it was sitting outside unused for years
Scotty Kilmer got to love that too... in Florida its a given even if its a couple months.
I'm really glad I just watched this one, because I drive the same car he used in the video and it could use some new CV axles but I didn't realize it was this simple, so I've been putting it off. Will be doing that and probably new struts very soon.
Only if my mechanic could do that in 4 mins...!
I have this problem still after replacing both cv axles on my fwd Mazda cx9. the second mechanic told me its not the axles but the differential. does that sound right? I dont want to waste money replacing the differential if its not that

You know he’s good and know what he’s doing when you fix a car in a jacket and shades on. I don’t even k ow what he did for looking to see was he going to get any oil or dirt on himself. (NEVER DID)👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
This dude is a legend, first place I go to when I have something new to fix.

Much love and aloha brother, thanks for the videos.
I’ve learned many great things from you Mr.Kilmer.
good day sir. any videos of what could possibly be wrong in my cars differential. i hear "clunk" sound when changing gears. and continues clunking sound when running slow at 3rd gear. Thank you for making such videos. We've learned a lot.
Do you need to lube up the ends of the shaft? I also noticed you had a pan to catch the oil, does that mean I have to top up the oil as well?
