Universal tub diverter spout installation

- Tips for installing a universal tub diverter spout. The last time I replaced a tub diverter spout I bought 2 spouts, one that would work on threaded nipples and one that would work on copper pipe. The one that didn't work I would take back to the home improvement store for a refund. This time a bought a universal spout that should work on any type of connection.

Thank you so much for making this video. I bought this and installed it incorrectly and couldn't figure it out through the provided instructions. Your video cleared up my issue and I got it done in no time. thanks again!
Thanks sooo much! This video was amazing! I was able to get my universal spout installed no problem after watching your easy to follow video. You're the best! :)
Thank you from Salem, Ma. I truly wish all instructional videos were this clear and concise.
Hello, from Haverhill, MA
The rubber gasket introduced at 3:16 simply disappears 5 seconds later. 😂
Yes, I noticed that too, but only after struggling with the actual one.
That’s my question and the rubber gasket disappears! I’m trying to instal without it.
Had to rewind that too..
So do you need it???
Thank you. Your video was a great help as I had a hard time getting the inner rubber gasket on the adapter on the copper pipe. I was afraid I would tear the gasket but I gently twisted the adapter and it did finally go over the copper pipe. I did not see you put the big rubber gasket between the adapter and the long piece that runs up the nozzle, but I installed it. Last, I had bought a new Delta faucet which had a different slip on unit inside the faucet. It required a copper stub of at least 1.5 inches which I did not have. I bought the 10 dollar Peerless unit and used the delta faucet with the inner from the Peerless unit. Worked perfect, easier and allowed me to use a 1 inch copper stub coming out of the wall. THANKS!
Thank you very much for posting this video and explaining everything step by step. You are an excellent mentor and I couldn't ask for a more simple and easy example of replacing the spout for my bathtub.
Thumbs up for sure and God Bless bro.
Thank you! For all the naysayers, watching your video helped me figure out how to install a tub diverter spout. That's the point & again, thank you very much!!!
Thanks, I'm glad the video helped.
Love the video and it helped tremendously. Just a quick note to self; Always put the plumber tape in the same direction that you will be threading.
Good tip, thanks.
Ha, I saw this video and laughed. I was going to write the same response. The motion of unwinding the Teflon tape is sometimes a disaster with stainless steel on s.s. Fortunately plastic tends to be self sealing at low domestic pressures.
Nice catch : )
Thanks-this is just the type of spout I'm looking for-I ordered it from HD. I had a cheap Danco that I couldn't get to stop leaking.
So far this is the best video I've found to learn about replacing my 37 year old (still working fine) Moen tub spout. I'm just replacing it cause I can't stand to look at it any more - LOL - Thanks so much for the helpful video Home Depot!! I'm heading your way to but that Universal spout ASAP. :-)
Martha Mercury - holy moly! Mine didn't last 10 years without freezing up.
love how you explain and demonstrate every step...thanks you...
Thanka so much for this video! I got the old one off and the new one on no problem. Had my first normal shower in months now that all the water is going to the shower head! Thank you!
just what i needed, very clear
I need to change the Spout at my house but I don't' know how .now I know .Thank you. for all those helpful Videos,
Thank you SO MUCH!!! feeling accomplished with your video as a guide. The packaging doesn't have very good directions for someone who didn't have a clue to what parts go to what. 😊
Glad I could help!
I had the same problem in my apartment, I called the maintenance guy and the fool said that's a big job the back tiles need to be removed and so on, I looked at him and laughed. Thanks for the video demo I took care of the problem myself!!!
Congrats Ralph.
Thank you so much. I am a woman and have to take care of myself so I got out my phone and looked you up and I was blessed thank you so much.
Wow, thanks!!
This is a much better design then the one I bought, I even asked the guy at home depot if they had a adapter like the one you put on. . .He said nope. Danco Universal tub spout replacement sucks haha, once again my cheapness caused frustration. Right tools, makes job SO much easier.
Super easy to follow directions. Thank you. You made this super simple for me.
Great to hear!
Thanks for sharing need to repair my tub spout and I’m a 33 year old stay at home mom so this video really helped
Thanks Stephanie for watching.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching.
Thanks for these instruction; they were most helpful!
Thanks Lisa for the feedback.
thank you for the video. I just replaced my tub spout using your video.
Thanks, I'm glad the video was helpful.
great video, very helpful. Thank you for posting
+Areil Anderson Bacher
Thanks Areil.
Thank you very much I'll report back with the results tomorrow....to be continued.
Good video, just be sure to wrap the teflon tape in the same direction as the device (nut, faucet...) is turned as it is installed. It will probably be ok if the tape is on tight enough.
I like to fill possible water escape routes with silicone. The large hole around the cooler tubs is a great way for water possibly make its way down to my neighbours.
I would also use some against the replacement part and the wall. Just in case.. No harm done, but peace of mind.
Great Video. Thank you!
You could try some sand cloth and lightly sand the end of the pipe so there are no burrs that will grab the o-ring, then lightly sand the exterior of the pipe to remove any imperfections, solder, etc. After that apply some dish soap on the o-ring and exterior of the pipe and rotate the adapter back and forth as you push it onto the pipe.
To David Knecht: The spout I bought at Home Depot looks a lot like the universal spout in this link: www.homedepot.com/p/PartsmasterPro-Universal-Tub-Spout-with-Diverter-in-Chrome-58485/203052453
I always get my plumbing advice from someone who doesn't know how to put on teflon tape...but I think I can trust him
LOL, I saw that too!
😂🤣
You are wrapping the teflon tape the wrong way at the end. It should be wrapped
clockwise, because the faucet is being turned clockwise to tighten it.
:'( how simple mistakes can cause problems.
The following worked (8/2018): I sprayed some WD-40 on the rod of the diverted knob, then sprayed inside the end of the spout on the rod and also on the rails of the diverter. Now the diverter works great, with I'd say 95% of the water being diverted to the shower head. No need to buy Allen wrenches, buy a new spout, or hire a plumber.
Now you have toxic WD-40 residue in the water if you use the tub. Would be better to use a food grade dry-film lubricant or food grade silicone/Syncolon grease instead. Super Lube brand.
Wow! I really like how neat and clean your demonstration was. Thanks for sharing ❤️
I asked 4 people at lowes and Home Depot and neither knew how to do this 0-0... Unbelievable! Thanks for video
Maybe a few training sessions for the employees would help.
iScaper1 check your video 3.:23 where it is the black part it was disappear.

When testing how the spout would slide over the copper pipe the the black gasket seated in the back of the extension nipple. I left it there and didn't show that step in the video. My mistake.
Ok thanks. I got the same part you have in your video but I did wrong. Thank you for your help.
*****
Good luck.
Thanks again, Han.
The white Teflon tape is best applied clock-wise direction. You have a situation that might bunch to tape up otherwise.
Did you caulk around the diverter after installation?
Thanks! Help me a lot!
If it's connected to copper pipe there should be a set screw on the underneath side of the spout. Loosen the set screw and then try to rotate off. If the spout is connected to a male adapter try twisting counter clockwise to remove from the male adapter. If this doesn't work by hand you might need to try a big pair of channel locks.
You are wise beyond your years.
i put the black ring screwed in the white tube. worked easier, than the 2 together on the wall, see black ring goes deeper in the tube and then easy to screw on to the metal one on the pole. :)
Good video but agree on Teflon tape wrapped wrong direction
Thank you for this video
Sorry Scaper, is a good clear vid and quite valuable but Toly you are quite right. Teflon tape should be wrapped in the same direction as the threads would be turned in. This will pressure the the tape to draw into the threads and tighten around them as opposed to pushing out and loosening as the spout is turned on. As long as spout is leak tested at the finish either way will most likely perform the function of sealing however the better and most effective way is with the turn of the threads.
How about finishing with caulking around the faucet where it meets the wall???
Thanks that was helpful
Super helpful, thanks!
+zonker77
Thanks for watching.
Thank you, this video really help me.
My pipe coming out the wall is plastic
Do you have separate valves to control the water? One valve for the shower and one for the tub?
Good video!
Thank you , it worked!!
Great!
the tape was installed backwards. Thanks for the video
Seen some of this videos and they should emphasize how important it is to remove the caulking around the tub spout before attempting to turn it ... I almost broke my pipe... happily copper is so maleable it twisted and there was no break nor leak... please pay attention to that first (life or death-of the pipe) step
Thank you!
Good job!
Thanks James for watching.
Thank you Sr..
I think he put the teflon tape on wrong to generate more comments, GENIUS!
I drove myself crazy for 3 hours today trying to replace this. I went to 2 big stores and couldn't find the spout insides that looked like my old one. I bought 1 type anyway, tried it at home, and returned to store.
Chris O'Dowd
The universal spout should work on a male adapter type connection or copper pipe.
I got it done but sloppy. I had to get a pvc pipe cutter and cut off 1/4" of the plastic threaded pipe that screws into the spout. I never could get the spout to screw in far enugh to meet the wall so I bought a chrome ring and put it on the wall first with some sealant, then screwed the spout on. In retrospect, I think I needed to cut the copper pipe, but I bet I still would have had that guessing how to meet the wall.
Big beef I have with all installers. Clean the old wall well before putting the new one on. Don't leave old grubby caulk behind to caulk over. Some people need to stop rushing through these things...usually ones being paid. When I do a kitchen faucet for instance..all the pipes under the sink are taken apart and cleaned well before putting back. Lots of goo and gunk gets built up in them. Germy!
Thanks real helpful 👍
Thanks Alex for watching.
The correct way is wrapping the teflon tape first, then place the gasket on the pipe.
Excellent
Thanks.
Awesome video...I don't need my lazy husband .
He told me, he can't change ours because it required a special tools....now I know his just lazy.
Thanks Marielsa for watching.
What about the plumbers putty or silicone? I put around the hole area before setting the faucet on. It's a must don't you think?
Great vid but I was getting nervous that you didn't scrape the old caulk off the wall.
Teflon tape was used correctly the first time and wrong the second. Always put tape in direction that the threads tighten in or the tape has a tendency to bunch and rip.
If you're sure the copper pipe is 3/4" (7/8" OD) coming out of the wall, the easiest solution would be to find a diverter spout that slides over the 3/4" copper pipe.
Excellent ! Thank you so much.
Better than the instructions that came with it. Thanks
Thanks for watching.
Could you give me some tips on sliding the adapter on to the pipe? I bought a diverter and it has brass adapter and I can't seem to get it slide on to the pipe. I sanded the pipe clean and even tried putting some lube on it. Should I just return the diverter or should I change the pipe?
You are right,he wrapped it the wrong way on the adapter. He did wrap it the right way on the nipple in the adapter.
What kind of screw is there? I need to install one and I found a spare faucet yet it has the screw missing. Just wondering if it's a standard one that I can buy at a hardware store?
Thank you
Welcome!
Other utube videos talk about calking the hole, before attaching the diverter spout, to prevent any dripping water from dripping behind the wall. Any comments regarding this procedure?
thanks
this is the third try by the way if this don't work I will be selling the house
if it doesn't work, call a plumber. you don't have to sell the house.
I understand your frustration completely!
Lol
This comment made me actually laugh out loud.
hey my bathtub faucet is leaking out the end, does that mean it just needs to be replaced? or is the problem caused by the single hot and cold leaver ?
It takes 1 minute to remove or use a flashlight and look up to see that type of spout connection there is before you buy a replacement.
I would avoid using an universal type. They tend to leak easier and more often.
what if i need an extension that is just a BIT longer than what I have? spout used to sit fine against shower wall, but after remodeling (was old plywood walls and "waterproof" laminate overlay), the cement board + tiling has made the spout further away from main pipe in wall into which extension gets screwed.
Turn the water on, I want to see it work.
@ 1:04 He would actually have been TIGHTENING the set screw! You have to be careful, when working upside down or backwards with tools, to imagine yourself facing the fastener so that you don't get the wrong direction for tightening or loosening. He must have already successfully loosened the set screw and was going through the motions with the hex key for the video. Once he turns the diverter screw-side up he turns the screw the proper direction to loosen. Anyway, be careful: this is a mistake I often make when working on cars and the bolt or screw is facing away from me.
I noticed that too... I also sometimes have to stop and mentally reposition my viewpoint to make sure that I'm turning a screw, nut, or bolt in the correct direction..
Lefty loosey, righty tighty. Remember this and it won't matter which way the fastener is situated.
@@wessunde2801 Glad I’m not the only one!
Great video, do not use Danco replacements-horrible.
EXCELLENT!!
Teflon Tape Was Installed Wrong , Always Wrap Tape Clockwize With Pipe Facing You With Right Hand Thread
I noticed that right away to
stephen zies b😜
BMS- he wraps one direction the first time, and then the other the second time. which is right and which is left ;-)
BMS= Be More Specific
I don't know plumbing but it makes sense to tape in the same direction that your screwing in the object, that way the tape is pressed tighter as the object threads pass over it.
The Universal diverter tap I purchased at Home Depot is the same as this one shown in the first part of your video. Problem is, my non-threaded copper pipe isn't 2" max from wall. I'm afraid to cut it down. Does the pipe need to be cut down to 2" max for this "universal" tap to work?
+Lys Forte (Wildgift) did you find a way to work around this? I have the same problem.
I think I'll need to cut the pipe. :(
Question: after you replace the sprout, don’t you need to put silicone around the sprout and wall to prevent water getting into the wall?
Hello JT Marcel. 😁
If I wanted to leave the shower head in the holder and place it higher, could it be used as a normal shower?
I have 3/4" copper pipe with no thread and the same universal tub spout. My old spout corroded the pipe and broke off. i still have about 3.5" sticking out. can I put this spout on the pipe without threads? If not, what do I have to do to get it on?
I need to replace a spout, but I can't find one like this. What brand is it?
the silver adapter is harder than heck to get on. sand the pipe a lot and use soap or plumbers grease to slide on. also you have to champhor the pipe with a file to put a bevel on it so the adapter fits.
Paul Fraser ya! im wondering How the heck he slipped it on so easy!
Yep. I had to do that. 180 grit
Como detalle el té flor siempre se renrosca alado contrario para que ala hora de poner la llave no lo quite y así al otro lado corre con la misma rosca
if you replace the diverter gate and still leaks by do I need a new piece of pipe
Why u didn't open the water at the end, or u were afraid it could leak?
LOL
You should put the Teflon tape on in a clockwise direction next time. That is the proper way. You went counterclockwise on this video.
Great video, but I can't see the screw!!! something got twisted. Any idea? Thanks
If you're talking about the adapter with the set screw you should be able to feel its location. If the set screw isn't tight see if you can rotate the adapter.
I have the reverse of the most common diverter issue (spigot not diverting to shower) - my diverter seems to only work for the shower. That is, the spout doesn't flow water, it's on constant shower flow, although the diverter releases and lifts like a properly functioning one. Would replacing the spout/diverter possibly resolve this issue? My gut says no, and I would hate to replace the spout if there's no hope.
Reema Dhillon I don't think it would do you have a 3 handle or single handle shower
straight forward....
Thanks for commenting.
You want to wrap the thread tape the opposite direction of what you're tightening, which is counter clockwise. If you wrap the same direction often times the tape will undo itself as you thread the nipple into the fitting.
what happened to the rubber gasket?
I believe he replaced the whole unit.
