I don't want any grass growing. I don't want to have to cut the grass. So any tips for keeping it from growing would be appreciated other than using poison
Love your videos. I really need some help with my yard. I have a lot of weeds. Everything is green. but more weeds than grass. I have about two acres with no watering system. I know you like the anderson productions. I used tenacity but I can't seem to get control of the weeds.
With corded power equipment like this, I usually just do a quick overhand knot between the male and female ends before connecting them up. Any tension on the cord then pulls the joint closer together. No cable ties or other strain relief needed.
While doing construction we would only use the overhand loop knot, as the standard overhead wears out the wire at the connection ends. The loop allows you to pull other cords/tools without kinking the wire.
I watched your first video on this device when you first posted it some time ago. Your advise about the corded being better than the cordless was spot on. I did buy a corded one then and have used it a lot since. Works real good just like you said it would. Thanks for your videos!
I have the SunJoe dethatcher. Works great as well. I use a bungie cord to pull up the back cover by 2'' or so. Allows the thatch to dispense more evenly instead of clumps every 10-15 feet.
Agreed, even heavy dust can have you coughing for days. My tough guy days are over, take the mask off and a shower and its like it never happened. Much easier on you
First time I dethatched I raked up all the debris by hand, I was exhausted lol. Nest time I got a lawn sweeper that attached to the back of my ZTR mower, what a difference.
I've done this every Spring for the past few years. In the past, I bagged the clippings with my mower, but this year, I just mulched them back into the ground. My lawn was green over a month before everybody else in the neighborhood! It's food for the lawn critters. Mulch it in.
I have the dethatcher. Works great! If you rake by hand you're garunteed to get blisters on hands and sore back. One thing to note, if you have brown spots from pets, skip the fertilizer in that area.
Thanks for the video. I bought the Greenworks de-thatcher a couple years ago after watching your video about it in spring 2021. It worked out as good as you described. Held up great for two seasons now and helped my lawn greatly
Cool grass care is significantly different than warm season grass care! I use to live in cool season grass areas and this was good advice. Now I have warm season grass and it’s a different world!
Thank you I watched your dethatch video from 2 years ago before I watched this one and I just ordered a Greenworks Dethatcher. I’ve used a hand one for years but it was just to much work. This video was also very helpful and looking forward to trying it. My lawn has lots of dead stuff in it. I’m going to watch some more of your videos. Hopefully I will have a greener lawn by the end of the season.
Been using that same machine for the the last 4 years , yard was in really bad shape when I bought the house, now my lawn is in great condition! I live near Phoenix,so it’s super hard to keep a nice yard.
Wonderful content. 100% accurate. I have the same machine & it works brilliantly. I’d also share that it has 3 settings for tine height/depth adjustments on the wheels (great scarifier if you want to throw down seed). Those dust clouds are the real deal! My neighbours not pleased with their complementary vehicle dust blanket I put down. Face coverings advised. Continued success! 👍🇨🇦
We have a SunJoe, but essentially the same machine, and it is wonderful. You can almost HEAR the lawn sigh of relief after a dethatching. But god... the amount of stuff it pulls up is mind boggling, to be sure. Well worth it though.
Love my Greenworks dethatcher. Pulled out a lot of debris and dead grass this weekend. I blow the debris onto the driveway or road and sweep it up. Easier than trying to mow it. But I only have a 21" mower.
I use a lawn sweeper to scoop up all the clippings after using the Greenworks Dethatcher. Holds a lot more than a lawn mower and is easy to grab and bad.
It is fun to watch this and realize that Warm Season grass IE Bahia or St Augustine grasses cannot be dethatched like this at ALL! It would literally kill our grasses as they're all spread out with stallons. Great video. Neat to see what you all do with cold season grasses even though I have lived in Florida my entire life. 😆 😜 Jeff - Sunny Central Florida
Great video. I just did this yesterday. Mine is the GreenWorks with a bag and you're absolutely right it fills up to quickly that I stopped using the bag. I also should of worn a mask. Got a cold the dust didn't help. I only thought about that after I was done. I did lower my mower but didn't lower it to 1in. I think I'm ok since a couple spots the blade cut the ground up. Will need to put some seed on those spots.
I use a tow behind system that does not have spinning tines, but tines that dig and spring around. The worst part, is picking up the debris afterwards. I only have my push mower for this. I really need to get a bagger for my lawn tractor.
After watching a few videos last year about the benefits of dethatching, I bought a SunJoe dethatcher last spring. Darn thing didnt even make it through one use in my Bermuda lawn. Bermuda lawns have long runners that get wrapped around the axel of a dethatcher and actually started to cause the plastic gears in mine to melt. I live on about 1/4 acre in Oklahoma - and on parts of my lawn that are Zoysia or Fescue, it worked well. Would not recommend if you have a Bermuda lawn.
I know the market is always changing for the electric power stations, but I was wondering what you've found to be the best all around power station to date? Something that would be a good single power station to have for single family home, in case of an emergency, to power things like a heater or two in winter for maybe 24 hours, or some fans in the summer, and especially some phones. Costco has the EcoFlow for sale, but you haven't mentioned that in over a year so I'm not sure if that technology is considered old by today's standards.
I do too, NH has a lot of them and these look like meteorites. I wish I could carve one out and make a little room in one, it would be like the Flintstones.
Nice man! Not sure if you deal with it, but a video about dealing with Bermuda Grass would be awesome. That stuff has caused such a pain in the ass for me.
@@dang3402 theoretically it wouldn't matter. Was it a fert mix or solo pre emergent? You can always do a reapplication if you're worried. Keep in mind pre-emergent is really only for crabgrass. Question So I’m doing this a little backwards. I already weed and feeded 2 weeks back. Got my sun joe this past weekend, planning on mowing then dethatching this weekend, any issues you see by doing that? In about 4 weeks I may weed and feed again before a rainstorm.
I’ve never used a dethatcher but your advice seemed sound, my yard only looks bad in the front so if and when I get a dethatcher that’s where I’m starting first
Hi! Quick question, I’m from mass when should l apply pre-emergent and fertilizer, I been following you lately thank you for keeping that great work 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I dethatched my lawn in the fall using this machine and it really beat the crap out of it. The machine worked well and pulled up a lot of stuff, but it took out some good grass as well. Do you usually just recommend doing this in the spring? Not sure what I did wrong but the areas that I didn’t dethatch as a test look much better than the areas I did dethatch😢
If your lawn is the least bit uneven, it'll dig in the high spots just like a wood handplane knocks down the high spots. That's probably good to even it out though. There SHOULD be a setting on it (there is on the SunJoe, at least), to determine how aggressive it gets; from a few mm above the lawn level to a few mm below.
I literally just finished doing this with my Sun Joe 30 Minutes ago. I chuckle seeing all the weird looks I get from passersby. “What the heck is that thing??”

Enjoy your channel. Yep, low mowing and early spring dethatching is definitely the way to go. But - whether you have a rider or pushmower - I have found a FAR easier method of doing this in a large lawn. Previously, I've rented a gas-powered, walk-behind dethatcher (similar but much more powerful to what you are using here) - but this is also VERY time consuming. Later I had a pull-behind dethatcher with tines that I put concrete blocks on and pulled with my riding mower - also very time consuming, cumbersome, hard to turn, and the weight makes it wearing on the mower engine / transmission if you have significant hills. So, a FAR easier / much better method: Google and buy Arnold universal dethatching blades for riding mower. My rider uses two of them - you just swap them out with the mower blades. This allows you to simply ride your mower as if you were cutting the lawn and it does an absolutely incredible dethatching job! Once mounted, test the height so you don't get more than the thatch layer. Also, there will be a few inches in between the dethatching blades, so you'll just have to make sure you shift your dethatching pattern to cover that gap (easy to do!). Again, you can put one of these bladed on a push mower and it works just a good. These blades save a TON of time and aggravation, vs. the other methods. After completing the dethatch job, just remount your mowing blades and vacuum up all the thatch. One key to keeping thatch under control is don't let it build to the point that it becomes a much harder job - stay on top of it Note: When you remove your mowing blades, it's a great time to sharpen them - I do it quickly with an angle grinder while wearing heavy gloves and eye protection. If you have Zoysia turf, like many in the Southeast or mid-Atlantic states do, then you need to dethatch every year, as Zoysia is particularly prone to thatch build-up. Sometimes, if your spring and summer is exceptionally wet (as it feeds the thatch), you might consider dethatching a second time in late summer.
What's the difference between mask and respirator as far as yard dust...? Is it doable when it's 90 outside? Thanks, never tried wearing one for that, only for military service.
ive given up......... ive got too many dogs and cats for a good lawn lol (maybe if they had 3x the size lawn to pee and crap on lol) . also, we still have snow on the ground here in NE montana
Always love your content, and when spring hits, I am always looking out for new videos from you. Something I noticed, the power station you linked is no longer available. Did they already discontinue it or do you know of a comparable option?
Be careful though. I LOVE cordless stuff. Just 30 min ago I was using a chainsaw (battery) to do huge jobs. BUT for some reason cordless dethatchers have very sad perofrmance and often you need to use them for 2 hours and the batterys don't make it and have super low power. I wish they were better but they dont seem there yet.
I normally mow at 2.5 or 3" I know many consider that a little short but I find that is the best height for very nice looks, and tolerates foot traffic well but doesn't require crazy maintenance and excessive chemicals like reel mowing heights below 2" would
Im in the process of renovating my lawn following the advice of one of your other videos. I have a lot a dead spots. Should I dethatch right now, or continue following the other video( which reccomends aeration for seedlings)
Thank you very much, the lawn is definitely a mix. I have ben here just the one year, but currently I am overseeding with amzn.to/43A8q6e - If you haven't seen my renovation here too: ua-cam.com/video/193zGwu_5rM/v-deo.html
Definitely after. The level material will be soft and will get torn up some. So its best to wait until dethatching is over. I have a lot of leveling to do here and will be showing some updated videos on that also.
I noticed in this video you used Andersons 24-0-11, but their new lawn starter is 20-27-5...should the latter only be used if seeding in the spring? Not sure which one to use after de-thatching my lawn.
Generally yes, in the old days phosphorous was in every bag but now thats not the case. So if you had some you could use it but if buying new and for good practice you skip the phosphorous (27) you mentioned unless you are seeding.
They do work some, and for a giant area its better than not doing. But if you have 1.5 acres or less I would use a finer unit like this style They just pull out so much more stuff. I used to do my old house in sections and it made it easier on me.
I did nothing here in Ohio and I've already had to mow it twice. It's green and thick. My treatment company fertilized ten days ago, but it was already green with no help. My lawn must be healthier than I realized. We also had minimal snow this past winter. I've had the parts for the homemade sprinkler sitting in my garage all winter but I forgot to buy the 3/4 pipe locally as Amazon was out every time I looked. Guess I have time since we don't dry out for a few months.
That's a good question. *when* it's working it's nice. But honestly every time I got to use it, something is wrong. First the throttle level kept going loose. Tons of issue with bagger clogging that I finally worked out and belts coming off for no reason. Its such a solid machine but feels like owning an italian sportscar. You race it all day and fix it all night but like you I do like it but I wish it would settle down a bit
I noticed about 3:07 while you are showing the tines, that the shaft which the tines are mounted on is at an angle. The side with the motor places it closer to the ground. I have a Sunjoe that is like that also. Is there some reason for that? I thought it was a defect of some kind but it looks like yours.
For this job I definitely do. BUT I would have died on the Walker with the edge of the lot here, I used it on many slopes but these are crazy on the edges
That is correct, I no longer use pre-emergents. I need to do a video explaining why, but yes disturbing the soil after applying those will reduce their effect
I would love to see a video of why no pre- emergent. After 3 seasons, I believe my lawn has “stunted” root growth as a result. I haven’t had a lot of weeds but grass is thin. Going to try next season w/o Prodiamine.
Did this process but I put down milorganite don’t think that was the right product for spring green up. Can I still do a quick release nitrogen or should I hold off?
I use milorganite every year at this time and it will green up your lawn. I dethatch, throw down a weed n feed fertilizer, then follow up with Milo about a week later. It's good stuff and won't burn out your lawn.
@@DJ-ih8tzslegostickers didn’t time the weed and feed right last time I used it and disaster ensued. I fed the weeds and they had a great spring. I avoid it now. I put Andersons barricade down in March and milorganite beginning of April. Still got some poa so I might have to go earlier with the barricade

Always love your content, and when spring hits, I am always looking out for new videos from you. Something I noticed, the power station you linked is no longer available. Did they already discontinue it or do you know of a comparable option?
My goal is to convert 3 out of 5 acres to wildflowers, garden, flower beds, ground cover, and corn this year.
I am in the northeast, Trugreen already put down pre-emergent about two weeks ago, can I still dethatch or is it too late?
Are you tired of using corded equipment? I was and find out that Ryobi made a batery power detatcher, what a relief !
How short do you go on your mower during the spring? When is a good time to change the height? And what do you normally do?
I normally mow at 2.5 or 3" I know many consider that a little short but I find that is the best height for very nice looks, and tolerates foot traffic well but doesn't require crazy maintenance and excessive chemicals like reel mowing heights below 2" would
Good !
What was the greenworks dethatcher wattage draw on the Zendure?
Im in the process of renovating my lawn following the advice of one of your other videos. I have a lot a dead spots. Should I dethatch right now, or continue following the other video( which reccomends aeration for seedlings)
If you have multiple areas, I would skip the dethatching and follow what I did here: ua-cam.com/video/193zGwu_5rM/v-deo.html Dethatch next year
@@SilverCymbal right on. Thank you.
Awesome video. May I ask what type of cool season do you have ? Thanks I love your channel.
Thank you very much, the lawn is definitely a mix. I have ben here just the one year, but currently I am overseeding with amzn.to/43A8q6e - If you haven't seen my renovation here too: ua-cam.com/video/193zGwu_5rM/v-deo.html
Very good info thanks
Do you only wear the respirator when cleaning up the thatch or for every now?
Should I level my lawn before or after dethatching?
Definitely after. The level material will be soft and will get torn up some. So its best to wait until dethatching is over. I have a lot of leveling to do here and will be showing some updated videos on that also.
@@SilverCymbal Thank you for your response. I bought a new home and this is all new to me but your content is making it easy.
How do you feel about a pull behind Thatcher.. I’m trying to weigh between this or the pull behind.. thanks
They do work some, and for a giant area its better than not doing. But if you have 1.5 acres or less I would use a finer unit like this style They just pull out so much more stuff. I used to do my old house in sections and it made it easier on me.
Thanks for the input! Looks like I’ll be going with this, I have right at 1 acre
Watching this from Minnesota, where we still had some ice lying around last week. What is this "early spring"?
👍👍👍Thank you
No problem 👍 Thanks for watching
I did nothing here in Ohio and I've already had to mow it twice. It's green and thick. My treatment company fertilized ten days ago, but it was already green with no help. My lawn must be healthier than I realized. We also had minimal snow this past winter.
I've had the parts for the homemade sprinkler sitting in my garage all winter but I forgot to buy the 3/4 pipe locally as Amazon was out every time I looked. Guess I have time since we don't dry out for a few months.
This is awesome information. What are your thoughts on a pull behind dethatcher vs this electric one?
What will be the next Andersons product for your lawn?, and when will you apply it?
How’s your gr2120 holding up? I love mine but I have to rebuild my front axle this spring.
With so much space, have you given thought to a tow behind unit for your tractor? Curious on your opinion if you have. Thanks
In Maryland. I put down weed & feed two weeks ago. Just cut my lawn for the first time yesterday. Is it too late to thatch?
If you have already mowed, its totally fine to dethatch now. The only exception is if we were in July August heat or you had new grass seedlings.
Admit you miss the walker! ADMIT it! 😂
For this job I definitely do. BUT I would have died on the Walker with the edge of the lot here, I used it on many slopes but these are crazy on the edges
@@SilverCymbal I know I know. Found ya for the walkers vids and now I watch every video now great job!
So dethatching after pre-emergent not a good idea??
Milorganite is nitrogen and iron and is a slow release product. You should notice a difference a day or so after you water or rain storm
