DON’T Use Sand to Level your Lawn!! *INSTEAD USE THIS*

  • Plan on Leveling your Lawn? Watch This.
In this video, I go straight to the pro’s to ask them what is the best lawn leveling material. My personal recommendation is to level with a mix of sand and dirt using a lawn leveling rake. As you will see in the video, the pros also recommend a mix of 50% sand and 50% soil to level a bumpy lawn. Leveling with straight sand is ok if you only have minor bumps and ruts that are less than 1/2 inch but anymore than that, you should use a mix of sand and soil.
A few issues topdressing with only sand are is increased irrigation due to the poor water holding properties of sand. If you do decide to level with only sand be sure to have a proper irrigation system installed because it will require increased watering. Also, if you use too much sand it can retain heat during the dog days of summer resulting in your grass frying out.
The benefit to using a mix of sand and soil to topdress is that you get the leveling properties of sand while retaining the clay composition of your soil. Another benefit to adding sand to your soil is that it improves drainage. Sand is known for its excellent drainage properties, allowing excess water to penetrate through the soil and prevent water retention, which can lead to turf diseases such as lawn fungus.
Basic equipment needed to level your bumpy lawn are lawn leveling rake or lawn leveler , lawn lute , or a lawn level drag . Also you will need a gorilla cart or wheel barrel to haul around the thousands of pounds of material for your DIY project. If you are looking to get more specific tools for the job such a rake designed just for leveling your lawn I will leave some links below.

Thank you, Mr. George. I was planning an even more ambitious project for my backyard that didn't survive last summer's blistering heat. I killed off the remaining grass (less than 10%) last Autumn and want to cover ~3000 square ft with about 2 to 3 inches of topsoil (I also have a lot of protruding red maple tree roots that need to be covered. Keeping it to 3 inches won't require a local permit). Then when Autumn rolls around, do the planting (I recall your "I FAILED" video for Spring planting so I'm waiting). I doubt if there are any establishments as conscientious as Mr. Collins in my neck of the woods - New Joisey - but I'll shop around. Wish me luck.

I like to use all purpose sand mixed with Black Kow. After I get the leveling done, I top dress with Black Kow using my roller spreader. I use the all purpose sand because it has a darker color. Play sand is bleached white sand. I think its ok, but all purpose sand looks better when its applied. A lawn leveling rake and roller spreader is a great investment if you want the best lawn around.

This was a great video and very informative . In N FL. we don't have a place like this . Nothing covered only know of one placed that screens it not sure if they do all their soil . They mix this special blend its $ 55 a yard . Regular yellow sand down here is like 350-400 a load 18 yards . Used to work in site prep and drove dump trucks . A 10 wheel dump truck can only haul legally 20 tons most aggregate facility will only load 18 ton so they don't over load you. Most folks sell by the yard on everything if they don't get a full bucket you get ripped off. The place I goto has a bucket that 3x3x3 it's 1 yard so you pretty much get what you pay for but not always. Yes you are right about the bag soil being full of sticks and other clearing debris , also they are full of insects that will eat your plants upThanks for your videos.

Our neighbor bought some from our local area dirt supplier and got it delivered and spread only to realize it had broken bottle glass shards in it.

@@PrincessCutLawnCare Thankfully the dirt seller had their guys come out and scrape off all of the soil and re-deliver and spread the entire thing, but what a giant pain for the neighbor. Not like his dogs or kids could go in the yard for the several days it took to organize all that.

I used to use a lot of Wisconsin-made Purple Cow brand compost in organic veggie garden beds 12yrs ago when it was a relatively new brand. It is very good stuff. I have not read anything about it in a decade, but I believe I remember reading that their compost was inoculated with a microbial culture based on the work of Dr Elain Ingham. I used to also make aerated compost tea with it and had great success. Highly recommend.

I wonder if Dr Elain would fine any living microbes in this product? Topsoil without anything living in it is just dirt.

Another excellent video! I moved from near you - (Bartlett) to South Carolina, built a house and had a sod Pacific Palisades Ziosia lawn put in. ( I wanted Bluegrass but that would not do well in the south of course). I told the landscaper it HAD to be level but he messed it up. I have 18K sq feet of lawn so to get the proper soil to level will be $2K +. When I do finally break down and buy the soil, I will watch your videos again to do it properly. Thank you so much!

@@PrincessCutLawnCare I think Chicago will always be considered home. We still have family there and my wife and I spent our entire lives up there until a few years ago. With that said, the weather in South Carolina is hard to beat. I don't want to spend 4 or 5 months inside the house anymore.

Bro, I recently overseeded my lawn for the first time and way underestimated how much topsoil I was going to need...it was actually closer to a full re-seed lol. After I dethatched and aerated there wasn't much left hah hah!
