I copied the lyrics (all credit given) onto a paper, put the paper under the windshield wiper of "her" car and asked her to marry me that night. 25 years and two kids later she told me, "It just didn't work out" (I looked at her with an look of incredulity and said, "WHAT? Were we on a 25 year DATE?!") Regardless, should I ever meet a new "her", I'll do the same ... I LOVE this song as the words are the greatest expression of love I can imagine.

I get the art of the video. Youth wonders about the meaning of life as independence is gained (symbolized by the girl leaving home). Leaving the playground behind she ponders death in the cemetery and celebrates (not fears) its inevitable rapture. Then the inexplicable chemistry erupts as she encounters love. This is true to George Harrison's spirituality.
That is a great take on the video. The song could have been a Beatles song (instead of a solo effort), as GH wrote it while still in the Beatles! Shame it was ignored by McCartney and Lennon

Since George was always kept in the background while a Beatle, once they went on their own I believe that George was the best song writer of the bunch. His songs are spiritual and magic; I can listen to them over and over and love them more each time.
By his own admission, he never had a writing partner and got a late start but in my view, he was responsible for such high quality music and lyrics he eclipsed Lennon/McCartney. What a loss to lose him.
Everyone should watch The Beatles: Get Back. It's probably a masterpiece. It details how talented the individual members of the Beatles were - George included, even as the youngest. Yoko Ono didn't break up the Beatles. They broke up because they all had too much creative energy to be contained in one band. Especially after 10 years of ridiculous success.
For those of you who question the message and symbolism of this song, this song is a CELEBRATION of the "gift" of life! When she continues her dance alongside the Cemetary it is NOT meant to be disrespectful of those who have sacrificed their lives, but rather, her Dance is symbolic of FAITH in the reality of LIFE after DEATH! That LIFE TRIUMPHS over Death!!
We know what the song is about. I'd suggest that no one actually cares about the video. I'd rather see George himself perform it. The dance is nothing to do with anything. It just is what it is.
@@Beth-ve7ob "It is what it is" ??? how original you are. That's the catch phrase for when you haven't a clue. Video is another facet of the song, just like performers present to you during a live show. Go ahead and prefer a 2 dimensional piece of art. I prefer 3 myself, as do most people.

This really is a great album. Beatles fans keep bitching about Yoko breaking up the band. .Sure, it may have been a factor. Actually, the band was doomed, anyway: George found it tiring--merely playing rhythm guitar for John and Paul. Unfortunately, George closed up--after John's murder Just imagine the tours he may have had:: Those with Dave Mason, Eric Clapton, Dylan, Lynne, Petty, Orbison, Frampton--many other legends likely would have shown up, too! Who knows?!: It would have blown everything else out of the water!

@@bigbadbith8422 the changes he has made in my life in the past year is a lot. I only discovered George Harrison's solo work after Covid lockdown. It really helped me a lot through those tough days. I am 66 (as we're on the subject!) and well remember what George's music meant to me when I was a youngster. Beatles' numbers always recall the top deck of the school bus and the girls from the girls' grammar. Ah, the memories! At the time, here in the UK, this track -- and also George's _If Not For You_ -- seemed to be interpreted more often by Olivia Newton John than by the writer himself. She did a good job with them, I think.
I am 59, and seeing these young people dance to George Harrison's music warms my heart. I saw Mr. Harrison sing this song in 1974. A very fond memory. Can you beat George Harrison, Billy Preston and Ravi Shankar for a first concert?

I hear Ya, my friend. Music used to mean something, telling a Whole Story in about 3 minutes. I grew up with this music and was fortunate enough to have been given talent by Our Dear Lord, and was an Radio Announcer for years. A DJ
Paul & John recognized George's guitar talent IMMEDIATELY, hiring him as the LEAD guitarist when he was only 15. It took a while for them to see he had WRITING talent as well, but they DID.
George joined the Quarrymen on 6 February 1958 - he was not quite 15 (his birthday is at the end of the month). Paul recognised George's talent as a guitarist immediately and introduced him to John. George did become a superb songwriter but much later than John and Paul. John was 17 and Paul was still 15 when George joined the group
martha george was an extraordinary talent but they main reason he was hired was because he knew all the chords to a popular song of the time that john and paul hoped to play at gigs
Actually, George had a tough time getting his songs on records. He was a friend of Paul's from school and John thought he was too young to be in the band. Paul had George play some song that was considered difficult at the time and that sold Lennon. By the time the Beatles broke up, George had enough material for his first solo album. Most of what was on it were songs John and Paul weren't interested in recording
George was always the best Beatle but held back by the other two. His solo career and Travelling Willburys showed his unique talent. Always get emotional listening to him. Thanks George
Lots of symbolism in this video - Leaving home for the first time (shrouded by fog), being off balance and wondering which direction to go (middle of the street on the double yellow lines), forming an open box on her heart, letting go of our childish ways (playground), growing in the sunshine (the garden), dancing even though we are surrounded by death (running pirouette through cemetery), first love then lit by sunlight (forbidden forest), both are wearing yellow and white tops (Yellow is the symbolic meaning of optimism, idealism and hope. White is purity), etc. etc. etc. - WOW!
Mark Brontsema thanks for the analysis. I would not have picked those out. My only quibble is some of the direction. I would’ve liked more full body shots. If I see dancers I need to see legs. Now if you’re into filmmaking perhaps you can enlighten me on the choices the director made in isolating some shots of the torso and above.
James, that is just a super cool thing for you to say!! Whoever set this up did a GREAT job all the way around. Choreography, casting, costumes, perfect demonstrtion of the message of the lyrics. It was nearly 50 years ago that I saw my first ballet, but only now do I understand it. Thank you, Emma and Esteban.
I love this entire video, but my favorite part is when they meet and dance together. I love their energy.
How old is this video?
This song is fifty years old and timeless.
And Simon Cowell had nothing to do with it which is why it's so fabulous.

About the video . . . George Harrison's widow and son, Olivia and Dhani Harrison, held an online competition in which filmmakers were invited to create a video clip for "What Is Life". Emma Rubinowitz, formerly of the San Francisco ballet and now a UX designer.
Spot on.

I listen this song over and over. Cant help it.
By his own admission, he never had a writing partner and got a late start but in my view, he was responsible for such high quality music and lyrics he eclipsed Lennon/McCartney. What a loss to lose him.
@buzz magister Extremely well put! :)
Esher Demos are the proof. He's my favorite.
If someone thinks its disrespectful then they are a nimrod and to dimwitted to comprehend an explanation.

@@bigbadbith8422 the changes he has made in my life in the past year is a lot. I only discovered George Harrison's solo work after Covid lockdown. It really helped me a lot through those tough days. I am a Hindu myself. I was an atheist for the longest time. But George Harrison made me believe in it again. Certain things he says means a lot to me. I have got a lot of answers I was loking for from George. I just wished I knew him better earlier. But I guess nothing is never too late.
I'm a sixty year old man and I cry every time I watch this
I know how you feel. I'm a sixty-one-year-old man and experience the same thing watching this. Take care, my brother.
Very emotional song, beautiful words of love
Im a 58 year old lady. it makes me cry too. just to be able to run and jump and be young and healthy would mean so much.
I am 59, and seeing these young people dance to George Harrison's music warms my heart. I saw Mr. Harrison sing this song in 1974. A very fond memory. Can you beat George Harrison, Billy Preston and Ravi Shankar for a first concert?
After The Beatles split up i think it was George who made the best music. Paul, John and Ringo made some great stuff too though.
So true.
Yeah, George really showed his talent. Paul and John wrote most of the Beatles songs so George wasn't able to show what he could do.
Agreed.
Agreed, I've always found George's music to be a bit more emotionally and mentally accessible. In the Beatles pantheon, he was truly a dark horse.
Totally agree 👍🏾👍🏾
Loved george first song learned to play mysweet lord met his sister and pete best attended George's memorial service in Griffith Park and when they played my sweet lord everyone cried
I love how she purposely combined youthful clumsiness along with moments of professional grace…just wonderful to watch. And the boy chase girl ending absolutely punctuated the realism, yet initial innocence of “What is Life”
♥️
Yes. She and He are both Prima Ballerinas.
Wow. Your critique was as wonderful to read as video was to watch. Well done,!
@@haroldrichards1932 Thank you for the kind words:-)
I felt the same way! Perfectly done and I love the intended awkwardness. Made it so real and beautifully rhythmic.
To anyone who reads this: have a great day 🤟
Peace and love
Peace and love my friend.
Peace and love 🤟
Thanks!
And Namaste!
Back at ya
Definitely one of Georges best songs. He was so talented and so missed.
Mega Talent. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🇩🇪
I love how the chorus propels this song to the next gear, just makes you feel so good...
No doubt
His best IMO. And the best song by a Beatle after they broke up.
One of his greatest songs.
Grew up with this music in the 70s. No internet, streaming, social media, cable or cell phones.
Damn I was lucky
Ya lo creo😊
Me too.
I hear Ya, my friend. Music used to mean something, telling a Whole Story in about 3 minutes. I grew up with this music and was fortunate enough to have been given talent by Our Dear Lord, and was an Radio Announcer for years. A DJ
We were truly blessed. Didn't know how good we had it
Paul & John recognized George's guitar talent IMMEDIATELY, hiring him as the LEAD guitarist when he was only 15. It took a while for them to see he had WRITING talent as well, but they DID.
You do know that Paul knew George before he met John?
George joined the Quarrymen on 6 February 1958 - he was not quite 15 (his birthday is at the end of the month). Paul recognised George's talent as a guitarist immediately and introduced him to John. George did become a superb songwriter but much later than John and Paul. John was 17 and Paul was still 15 when George joined the group
martha
george was an extraordinary talent but they main reason he was hired was because he knew all the chords to a popular song of the time that john and paul hoped to play at gigs
He only became as good a writer as they were in 1969.
George - the most lovable Beatle, and the most under-rated.
he wasn't underrated - the other 2 bastards shut him out cos THEY wanted the royalties for their songs...
He's NOT underrated.
@@TheVeek192 But he is the most lovable,
George was always the best Beatle but held back by the other two. His solo career and Travelling Willburys showed his unique talent. Always get emotional listening to him. Thanks George
While John and Paul had more success as solo artists, George was the BEST of the four Beatles as a solo artist.
White is purity), etc. etc. etc. - WOW!
Good to know I'm not the only one who sees it.
Dang I don't pay attention to that stuff you sound like my English teacher
Great commentary, Mark - thanks!
Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. - Ferris Bueller
My wife and I have been married for 25 years, and this has always been the song that catches up all of how I feel about her.
Awww that's lovely ☺
James, that is just a super cool thing for you to say!! Whoever set this up did a GREAT job all the way around. Choreography, casting, costumes, perfect demonstrtion of the message of the lyrics. The Beatles and this young ballet lady from San Francisco are a gift from God. ua-cam.com/video/cK5G8fPmWeA/v-deo.html
