When this song came out,, we had NO idea, that we would never be able to go back to the 80's again. So many fantastic memories fill my mind when i hear this song. The 80's were wonderful for me. I always get tears in my eyes whenever i hear this song. I would give anything to go back. Sit on the porch with my grandparents, have lunch with mom and just talk. Run and play with my dog. It was such a care free time for me filled with love. I am 62 and missing the world of the 80's.

I agree that the 80s was a great time to be alive, but I try to look at it without roast covered glasses. As a child in my 80s, every time I had a chance, I prayed to God that Russia would not start a nuclear war. Every single day,. We’re probably closer to nuclear war now than we were then with Russia but the Cold War was a scary time in the 80s

@@jessicadugan9184 The media made it more scary than it actually was. There has never been a threat without some sort of American involvement or American provocation. But regardless of the politics, news media didn't have a hold of people back then in the same way that it does today and that's partly why fewer people back then cared about that nonsense. Certainly as kids, we never had any of that propaganda thrown at us and I don't remember my parents or my friends parents ever being overly concerned about it

I was just going to have this play in the background, but a couple notes in and I reached over and cranked it up. It brought an instant smile to my face. Amazing how this was written for Whitney Houston, but Clive Davis rejected it saying it wasn't right for her. He was right. Then offered to Belinda Carlisle. Her producers liked it but she didn't. Hallelujah. Boy Meets Girl decided to record it and release it themselves. In my opinion, it would always be a better song when sung by a man with the woman as backing vocals. Plus, having the man and woman singing it together brings a lightness to it when the lyrics could easily suggest desperation. They were the perfect duo for this song.
The video harkens to the late 80's with the fashion choices hinting at the 90's being just around the corner.

I'd be honored if some 80s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of 80s classic songs on my YT channel. Covers include Sting, Prince, George Michael, Phil Collins, Tom Petty, Kenny Loggins, Billy Joel, Earth Wind & Fire, plus a couple of '010s classics from Bruno Mars and Coldplay. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and peace.

So many memories of the 80s whenever I hear this song: high school, cutting classes with besties, bubblegum, heartbreak of a crush, winning and losing at sports, the clunky Sony Walkman & a shelf full of casette tapes, and above all, the feelings of being immortal and pleasantly stuck in an endless summer party.
The subsequent decades just don't quite match up.

@Momentum Rules You bet!! In fact, since I had the misfortune of being a teenager in the 2010s--when mainstream music is almost nothing but autotune and machine noises and not using real instruments--I listen heavily to 1980s music as most of it has a unique "magical" and "stereotypical Disney" (this song is especially very Disney-esque) especially feel to it, with its potent synthesizers (like Van Halen's "Jump" and Laura Branigan's "Gloria", the latter of which I especially like the "explosive" synthesizer jabs), blazing distorted electric guitar (like in every 1980s hair metal song), and driving beats! (You can say that I am one of those youth in a generation that tends to indulge in and favor the decade 2-3 decades before the current one, as how there were youths who were a fan of the 1950s-1960s, back in the 1980s; just like there are youths who like 1980s today)
Though I am glad that there are many artists today that are channeling the 1980s in their own music...In fact, a singer named Eddie Vantez released an album this week, of songs that sound like they came straight from Bon Jovi, RATT, Whitesnake, Journey, etc., only difference is that they were released this week! You should listen to Eddie Vantez!!

George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, fine songwriters who wrote a bunch of hits for others, primarily Whitney Houston, finally got a chance to record themselves in 1988 for RCA. Got this on on a cassette single (stores were phasing out 45's then), and later on CD. I was doing Country on WHPO back then, but saved this for later use on KBOA. While capturing a moment in time that no longer exists, the song is timeless.

I have come back to this song again, because the two writers/singers perform with such natural joy. There is a chemistry between them that cannot be faked. The whole song is infused with joy. I was 31. It was 1999. Traveling 120 miles to sit state nursing boards. I had this on cassette with a repeat button. Listened over and over and over again. The nursing test took two days. This song kept me calm throughout the test. If it wasn't for this song, I would have probably had panic attacks and overwhelming anxiety. I would have failed the test. And subsequently, throwing away 4 years of my life. This is why it's in my TOP 3 greatest songs of all time! I am forever grateful.

I had classmates who were of African descent, most of the people on my school bus were of African descent, and about half of my high school band was caucasion, and the other half was of African descent. We all got along, for the most part. Nobody seemed to care. We were in school to learn, and we were in the band to kick the shit out of the other schools band. That is what we worried about.

I believe it was intended for Belinda Carlisle. You can find her version on UA-cam. She wasn’t a fan of the song so she half assed it. It’s apparent in her version. The writers recorded it themselves & made magic.

Back in the day when we were all younger and things were simpler. Most of us wished we were older and now we wish we were younger. Even though none of us can go back in time the music can transport our mood by bringing a smile to our faces as we either sing or sway along.
