      @@karenvanderbeck Understandable. Of course I don't know every detail of his abusive behavior back then (or maybe even still), but not knowing of sexual abuse settlements does not equal the absence of sexual abuse or abuse of power. I may be too pessimistic, but I think humans are selfish by nature and success enforses ruthless behavior. I'm not defending perpetrators, they should be called out and punished, but I believe this is rather the exception to the rule that most media personalities are like O'Reilly but never get caught.

      This is an oddly heartwarming friendship, and they do honestly come across as friends outside debate.
      As Jon has said, O'Reilly and him have made a lot of money off selling the foundation of the current politicized, tribal system of charicaturizing the other side and hiding their fans in echo chambers and it's hypocritical for both of them to call it out now. I do think Jon and Colbert tend to be closer to the truth than their equivalents on the right, but the rhetoric has been very similar and its allowed 20% of the most extreme elements on both sides of the population to take turns making the laws rather than focus on the actual majority, and they achieve this hijacking by convincing everyone on their side that the other side wants to destroy the country so the things they want may be unpalatable but at least it's acceptable.

    As much as every fibre of my being rebels to listen to Bill O'Reilly, this may be the only way I can - with Jon doing what he does well. It is important to sit with the uncomfortable, it is one of the best ways to figure out what I actually believe in. It is worth challenging myself by listening to the ideas, thinking and opinions of a person I am fundamentally sure I am going to disagree with on almost everything.

      Being uncomfortable spurs change. We get into our echo chambers and cozy opinions that everyone around us shares, we're content in our smug righteousness that we're better than "them". If we're at unease, we don't want to remain that way.
      It's a fine line to seek comfort and still peek your head out where it doesn't feel good. Either becoming numb or angry if taken to the extreme.

We don't need to blame him for a worldwide issue, let's blame him for things he actually did wrong. Studies show the majority of inflation is corporate price gouging, and then another big chunk was supply chain issues. No single leader is to blame anywhere unless you blame them for not cracking down on the corporate price gouging. But that's a left wing argument so the right would rather just blame and not look into what the real cause is.

The whole world went through rapid inflation rise. Countries are not built to handle inflation rise at this pace. It was the same here in the UK, the same in the rest of Europe, and it was caused by shocks to the system due to the Ukraine war. And Biden actually handled it pretty well. Their banter is legendary and the somewhat mutual respect they have for each other despite their opposite values is so rare. Jon is doing the right thing here. Or the ruling that recently granted the President immunity so that a lot of this can't even be looked at.

    • @KingBobXVI
      @KingBobXVI 4 місяці тому

      @@therebellion6911 - "Inflation would naturally cause record profits unless sales slump."
      No? You're thinking of revenue, or the total amount earned from sales. _Profit_ is the gross revenue, or the amount earned _after expenses._ If prices are rising with inflation solely to cover product costs, the company's margin will either stay the same or drop. For them to be making record profits, they either have to be massively increasing quantity of sales, or if they're making roughly the same amount of sales, their margins have to increase, which means the increase in cost is _beyond_ any increase from material or labor costs.
      And that's exactly what we've been seeing - the cost of goods has been increasing much faster than the material or labor costs to the company, and in many cases the material cost has _decreased_ (see: shrinkflation). Feel free to look up the multiple studies that have been done on this in the last few years, because they all pretty much show this same thing.

      I don't hear much good rebuttal to inflation by the Democrats. For one thing presidents have nothing to do with inflation. The only people who control the prices are the owners and executives of the companies. But people still blame the president.
      And yes, it was shown that a big percentage of this inflation was price gauging. Some of it was supply chain increases, COVID recovery and the war in Ukraine.
      And maybe they should point out that there has been inflation for a while but just not in common goods like groceries. Trump gave a huge tax cut to the rich which they didn't need. Of course this money wasn't put into investment or production but was used by them to buy assets like real estate and stocks/stock buybacks. So the price of housing got inflated and the stock market kept going up even though the economy was bad for the poor and middle class. There was inflation in the prices of things rich people buy but that's not talked about. Companies got a 40% tax decrease!!! That's effectively a tax break for the rich people who own the companies. Did average people get that?
