Barbara I don't know how to thank you for the "English" hold it mean a lot to me. I've tried to grasp the continental hold but it won!!! Thank you for the great tutorial.
Thanks Barbara. I am going to ty this with 2 colors. I think one of the Walker books has it in it. I tried Linen stitch years ago, but couldn't keep track of what I was doing. You gave a good explanation, and working with a single color with the Linen stitch didn't help because I didn't understand what was happening in the pattern. Kudos!
That is a really neat and textured looking stitch, great for a blanket and a different stitch type that just has a great uniformed look with the variegated colors and keeps interest and a nice project that anyone can appreciate. I have not tried this stitch myself, thank you for showing us how to. I like the "woven" look.
If you’re in the FB group I’d love it if you share a pic of your swatch! Or if Instagram is your thing you could totally post there and tag me. However you do it, I’d love to see how it works up!
What a wonderful idea. I have knitted for many many years and you can always learn something new. I knit slip stitch on my machine but have never thought to do it in my hand knitting. Thank you. I shall be looking to learn more. 👍👍👍
I adore slip stitches and they are super fun in hand-knitting. That said, I know there are things you can do on a knitting machine that are super difficult if not impossible to reproduce by hand. I'm sure you'll have fun experimenting.
You are great!! I am so glad I found you. I have been looking for a varigated pattern and this is it. Thank you so much I have learned a lot already. Will be checking you all the time. I have learned a lot already, you are an ecelllant teacher, slow so we can understand.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit Turned out great! I’m making a small clutch for my aunt with the rainbow yarn. I’ve done the body of it so far and it’s looking good. 😊
Continental for the win! I’ve been trying to figure out a way to use a plaid pooling yarn without having a wider piece than I can wear as a scarf. I’m going to see how this works with it. Thank you for the demo!
Oh, like it. I avoided variegated yarn because of the dots of colour, until I learned of Stephanie Lotven's "knit happy with self-striping yarn". You gave me a second option! Would be lovely to knit a bottom with self-striping yarn in this stitch and continue with the main colour to the top. Thanks, Barbara.
I made a small shawl about 15 years ago in a cashmere variegated yarn. It was a triangle done with linen stitch. I wish I had known about the woven stitch back then, and my finished shawl would have been lighter and less compact. Do you have a pattern of yours that uses the woven stitch? There are lots of variegated yarns in my stash that are crying out to be used. Great video, Barbara! 💜🙏🏼
This is EXACTLY what I needed! I have a piece i've redone already because it just looked splotchy with the variegated yarn. I'm going to try this for my 3rd try :)
I learned to use 2 sources of yarn. I love variegated yarn. Using two sources of your variegated yarn will break up the color more. I think this slip stitch pattern is fun, and I will experiment with it.
I would say no. I believe those types of yarns are designed to only work with stockinette worked at a specific gauge. I mean, if what you are looking to do is eliminate the self patterning then it might work, but if you want it to still self pattern this would mess that up.
That information is in the description notes below the video but here are the written instructions: To work over an even number of stitches in the round: Round 1: knit Round 2: *k1, s1-wyif; rep from * to end of round Round 3: knit Round 4: *s1-wyif, k1; rep from * to end of round
@@WatchBarbaraKnit thankyou very very much for teaching this! I have brat kind of varigated yarn that couldn't be tamed so far, so I am hoping this will help!
You can totally do that if it’s easier for you. I like doing it on the wrong side because it cuts the number of purls I have to do in half lol. Easy is different for different people.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit Thank you I am sorry I did not listen far enough, I am doing this now in a varigated greens and different blues. Just sarted will it show up or should I get another color. Thanks

Thanks for this video! I am building a stitch library of UA-cam videos. I love my books but sometimes it’s just easier to watch a quick demo.
You are so welcome!
Love this stitch! I have some variegated yarn I needed a pattern for so I’m going to try this. It’s really pretty and really shows off the yarn well.

So nice to see you knitting again!! Always learn something new from your videos. Thanks Barbara.
Thank you! I am so glad you liked the video. I am taking baby steps to see how my hand handles things.
I love varigated yarn especially on the woven stitch and the bee stitch looks great and no changing color's
When you find the right stitches it's the best!
You're such a good teacher, thanks so much for this video; going to try this out today!!
Have fun! And thank you.
Excited to try this with some beautiful rainbow variegated yarn my aunt gave me! Thank you!
Oooh, that sounds awesome.

Very cool. I'd love to hear how it comes out.
What fun! I will try it with some crazy variegated that I have in my stash.
Please do! And if you can share pics all the better.
That was an excellent demo. Thanks!
I hope you find something to do with it.
Thanks! I have used this stitch before, but haven't thought about it being great for variegated yarn. I'm going to try it out.

Great idea! I have a skein of verigated that I’ll use that on!
I'd love to see how it turns out!
Good presentation! Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
I learned to use 2 sources of yarn. I love variegated yarn. Using two sources of your variegated yarn will break up the color more. I think this slip stitch pattern is fun, and I will experiment with it.
Alternating skeins is a great way to tame a variegated, as is holding two strands together to make a heavier yarn.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit true what you say. And using a solid and. Variegated together tames a variegated.
Very cool… Thank you💜
Glad you enjoyed it
what size needle did you use? many THANK YOUS for the awesome website.
It's fingering weight yarn so I probably used something in the 5 - 6 range. You should just swatch and find which tension you like best.
I have some self patterning yard that makes a jacquard or faux fairsle look as you knit will this stitch work with it
I would say no. I believe those types of yarns are designed to only work with stockinette worked at a specific gauge. I mean, if what you are looking to do is eliminate the self patterning then it might work, but if you want it to still self pattern this would mess that up.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit thanks
Great video thank you 😊
Thanks for watching!
It's a little like an eye of partridge heel, but . . . not. I love it! Editing to add a question; does this keep the yarn from pooling?
I am unfamiliar with that stitch but now I gotta go find it LOL. It won't completely prevent pooling, but it can help break it up visually.
Oh btw....can I use this stitch in the round? I'm trying to figure it out....It would be very nice for a cowl.
Yes you can!
Thank You! ❤ How to work it in the round?
That information is in the description notes below the video but here are the written instructions:
To work over an even number of stitches in the round:
Round 1: knit
Round 2: *k1, s1-wyif; rep from * to end of round
Round 3: knit

This is pretty awesome, but wouldn't it be easier to just do the slipped stitches on the right side with the yarn in front?
You can totally do that if it’s easier for you. I like doing it on the wrong side because it cuts the number of purls I have to do in half lol. Easy is different for different people.
Thanks for the video
Thank you for watching!
How do the slipped stitches affect the row gauge? Since you have a swatch with both...
Ok, I just checked. In this swatch (DK weight I think) the woven st it takes 8.5 - 9 rows to make an inch and in the stockinette it takes 6.5.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit Thanks!
oue demostration shows slip one with yarn in back and the directions say wyif? Thanks Sorry I just listened to your explanation further.
I only demonstrated knitting the stitch flat. The wyif instructions are if you want to knit it in the round.

So now that you got us interested in this stitch, do you have a pattern?
In a fit of total lack of planning, no I don't LOL. I need to get on that. What type of accessory would you like to see?
👌
Thanks!
I love garter stitch, for this, but it gets boring. Thank you so much!
Garter bores me too LOL!
