This is so helpful, especially since you show not only the various techniques, but also highlight the differences between the results. Your videos are always so clear and useful. Thank you so much!
When a lovely German lady taught me the long tail cast on she didn’t use a slip knot, so, I never have. What I have not done before is to twist that first stitch or to make that first stitch the last in the round. That’s neat and I’m certainly going to have a go. One trick I do for almost all cast on when using the cable method is to cast on two extra stitches, then drop the first two stitches that were cast on. That eliminates the knot and makes for a neater beginning. Dropping two stitches is easier than dropping one. Thank you for this.
Thank you so much for this. I was taught to knit by my mother, my aunts and my grandmother. It did not stick! Eventually an Austrian lady taught me when I was 18 to knit in the continental manner and that worked. But then I learnt to crochet, and gave up knitting. Recently my youngest niece had a daughter and I wanted to knit some things for her. The knitting was fine and there was rapturous clapping from 7 month old baby on receiving the gifts. But the cold wind doth blow ~ and she'd really like some beanie hats. I've spent the last two days trying to knit in the round for the hat. I've undone it four times. Then I found your UA-cam video, and your written explanation. Happiness is a successful rib knit for this 71year old!
I’m so sorry, I still cannot get the very last trick. I replayed it 3 times. It only looked like you knitted the first stitch but didn’t actually join because on my needles I don’t have a join???
I loved your multiple solutions to the jog. I especially like your 3 tricks solution at the end. It's not too fussy. You are very clear and easy to understand. You're demonstrations are easy to follow. You You are a great and patient teacher thank you
UA-cam taught me how to knit during pandemic. The more I knit, the more I really don’t know how to knit. (Walking on knots in my socks). Weaving in ends didn’t seem like they’d stay after so many washings. This is very helpful for having nice edge & no knots❣️Thanks!
You have the best knitting tutorials ever, super well explained, and in a clear and thoughtful way. I'll be trying your 3-step method in just a few minutes.
I LOVE this “fix” so much!!! I’m a definite knitting knerd techy, and you’ve provided a genius way of mitigating that beginning jog that has long since bothered me. Thanks for the great, informative content! I’m a big fan!
Such great video. I like that Roxanne walks through each of the options to demonstrate the differences in outcome. I just used her three step trick with a chunky yarn; it worked beautifully.
From someone who doesn't have a lot of tricks up her sleeve, I thank you for this great video. I've knitted for years but never really knew what I was doing, just got the job done. Now I really care. Thanks again, I'm saving this.
Hi Roxanne, thank you so much for your teaching of this method to us. One could be tempted to want to keep all their secret tricks for self but not you. Again, I have learned something new with you. If I could of put two thumbs up I would of.👌
I just KNEW there had to be a better way of casting on rather than the slipknot when knitting in the round. I've been teaching myself to knit and am so glad I found your videos. Thank You!
I find this fascinating as I learned the cable cast on, and never have any issues with tidy joins or guessing where to start so as not to run out of yarn. but love watching your problem solving.
My goodness! Thank you so much for your very clear step by step video. I've been knitting socks for about a year, and I have not been happy with my caston edge. I love your 3-step method so much more than the method I have been using. You have a new subscriber.
Yours is the best and most clear explanation I've seen, and believe me, I've seen quite a few! Sure wish I had found yours years ago! Thanks ever so much!
I usually start with a twist instead of a slipknot (same as you! I feel vindicated XD) and cast on one extra. Then I slip the first stitch onto the right needle, pass the last CO stitch over the first as if I were starting to cast off, tighten it up (which gives the first stitch a similar loop at the bottom to the other ones) and then knit on.
I have done the pass-over-like-a-BO trick with the cable CO, and it works really well to create one of the two horizontal offset blips you get along the edge with that CO. So many tricks! :-)
I really love this type of video. Full of things for me to try out. I am pretty sure I will prefer the three step one at the end - the one you like. Thank you for giving us soooo much information - I feel fortunate to have found you.
I have used all of the techniques you show before your three trick technique (sans slip knot, I just dip and twist like you do). I have not been satisfied with any of them. Yours looks beautiful! I'm about to cast on a new pair of socks - so glad I saw this first! Thank you for taking the time to share this.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why they call her Rox. She rocks! (I watched without the sound on--no headset/hubby sleeping) and understood perfectly. Amazing tricks...wait for it.
I don't honestly remember the last time I used a slip knot for a long tail cast on. I usually just knit the first few stitches with both tail and working yarn and am hard pressed to find where I've joined after the project is finished. Nice tip, however. I may need to give it a try. Thanks!
Thank you Roxanne, I tried more things that people put on the UA-cam, this is the best I found. Actually, I cannot imagine better Cast On. It is so nice that I can learn things from here and in couple of weeks knit just like any nice knitters
It's so rewarding to see another knitter - especially one with your level of experience and expertise! - to validate what I found to be true through experimentation: lose the slipknot for a more 'seamless' join in the round! When I started knitting in the round about 8 years ago (after a decade of knitting squares and rectangles!), I didn't like the results of any of the techniques I found for the join. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I kept looking for better options... Then one day, I was watching a knitting video that had nothing to do with knitting in the round wherein the knitter started a long-tail cast-on without a slipknot. Wait! What was that? I watched it again - because I'd never realized the slipknot wasn't actually necessary!! And it dawned on me almost immediately: that knot was part of the problem with achieving a seamless join! I did a lot of experimenting with the different techniques with the slip knot... and eventually came up with my go-to join that involves casting on that extra stitch to knit the first and last together And knitting the first two stitches with both the tail and working yarn. And it was almost perfect... I can't wait to try your 3 steps for comparison!! Thank you sooo much!
I have recently discovered your excellent videos . They are so good that my goal now is to view every single one just to catch all your helpful tips. Your voice is so calming!
Thank you so much for this video. I did your 3 trick technique for a jogless cast on in the round for a hat I just finished and it worked like a charm! This is now my go-to method for knitting in the round!
Thank you for this explanation! I recently got back into knitting after learning 9 years ago after doing my first few projects. And now I'm back! I remember those jogged edges well.... lol. Now I know how to prevent those as I love on to more projects!
Yep, I'm convinced. I used method #2 and have never been happy with it. Thanks so much for sharing this. I will be passing it on to my friends and giving the credit to you.
Hello Roxanne, I really lucky to have come across your amazing video before I kick start my very knitted cowl using circular needle. I haven't had idea there are some ways making the round seamlessly. Your explanation is precise and clear. Your videos are great treasures for the knitting lovers with beginner or the intermediate skill level. Please keep it up. Hats off to you!
So glad I found this channel! I had literally just cast on stitches for a hat which I am making on circulars and was looking for a different way to join in the round because I was not happy with the join I had been using. This is phenomenal!! Thank you!!!!
I've tried just about every trick online and none ever quite work. I can't wait to make something in the round and do this, plus showing your finishing was so helpful! Thank you!
Thanks so much for Method #4. I am casting on for Heidi Kirrmaier's Big Wave in a linen tape yarn and I very much wanted to find a solution that would provide continuity for the long-tail cast-on. I never use a slipknot that needs to be hidden, but my join was still not as jogless as I want and the linen yarn only accentuates this. Your solution #4 is now my go to for joining in the round.
Except for cable provisional cast ons, I never have a slip knot. However my joins in the round are somewhat wonky. Your method seems to be the answer. Thank you.
Yeah, this is how I’m doing my mitten edges from now on, thank you! (Also, I appreciated you showing your weaving in. I’ve woven in many tails but I am always kinda unsure because nobody ever showed me, I just taught myself through lots of trial and error. It was nice to see how you did it, I’ll try the column method for smoother finishing.)
I like the method where you cast on an extra stitch. Then you slip the first stitch from the left needle as if to Purl onto the right hand needle and then slip the first stitch on the right hand needle over that slipped stitch right off and then tighten. This method works great for me. But thank you for sharing your tips! I may try them and see how they work. I am able to weave in the yarn tail and it looks fine. I know others just start knitting without doing anything and they fix the jog with their tail. To each his own I guess! Thanks again!
Or what about not using a slip knot when using the long tail cast on? Then at least it wouldn’t be an issue. Granted, I have always used a slip not but others don’t. Just a thought. 😃
Ok. I guess I’m tired. It’s after 1:30 am. I just finished watching the tutorial for the second time and am reminded that this no slip knot method is how you do it. Sorry about that. But alas! I have another question. What is the difference between the two ways to cast on without using a slip not? I can see how they are done differently but I guess the question is why do you prefer the second way where you twist it? Just curious. Thanks!
Thank you for the tutorial. Like you, I don't use slip knots either. I will definitely try your '3' step technique, as I am always happy to run into new techniques.
thank you for this video! A lot of videos or patterns say weave in the ends and I have just tried my best to hide the ends and make it look nice but sometimes not. Love your last method.
Another great learning video and I at least saw that I was doing similar to you just from instinct Nice to see that my instincts were a good thing after watching you in this great teaching technique! ~~~Jo
Thank you so much! About 90% of my knitting is hats for charity, and I've always disliked how the cast-on edge had that gap/jog in it. It actually never occurred to me to look for a solution -- I've always just tried to even it out when sewing in my ends.
Thank you so much for this demonstration. Trick #3 is definitely for me! I never liked that little jog on the edge of the sleeve and now there’s a solution to fix it! Yay!! ❤
Brilliant for me too for my new project - men's shooting socks - where the CO edge needs to be perfect as it's part of the look with a turn down 5-inch cuff
In previous video you taught me to Norwegian purl to achieve a reversible cast on for ribbing and accidentally taught me to not use a slip knot. I got to the end of my cast on for my hat and looked this up for a jogless join. I took my cast on out and now I'm not going to count my first "stitch" so that it can become my last purl cast on. I hope that this is a correct way to approach the join.
This is so helpful, especially since you show not only the various techniques, but also highlight the differences between the results. Your videos are always so clear and useful. Thank you so much!

Yep, I have a video on that technique for the cable cast on! :-)
Your technique is GOLD and you teach it so clearly!!
Thank you so much for this. I was taught to knit by my mother, my aunts and my grandmother. It did not stick! Not at all fussy!! I love it! Thank you so much. I also love the extent of detail you provide.
Finally! A clear and concise explanation of creating a smooth edge. Thanks. Your videos are excellent
Your 3-step method is the simplest one I’ve found! Thanks for a very clear tutorial.
You're welcome!
I’m so sorry, I still cannot get the very last trick. I replayed it 3 times. It only looked like you knitted the first stitch but didn’t actually join because on my needles I don’t have a join???
This is simply the best technique for jogless join in the round. So logical, and so easy! Thanks!!
You're very welcome!
I've been knitting for over 16 years and this is a game changer for me. Thank you!
I loved your multiple solutions to the jog. I especially like your 3 tricks solution at the end. It's not too fussy. You are very clear and easy to understand. You're demonstrations are easy to follow. You You are a great and patient teacher thank you
Thank you so much.
Just learning to knit in the round, at 72 years old
UA-cam taught me how to knit during pandemic. The more I knit, the more I really don’t know how to knit. (Walking on knots in my socks). Weaving in ends didn’t seem like they’d stay after so many washings. This is very helpful for having nice edge & no knots❣️Thanks!
WOW...that last method, your preferred method is PERFECT! Thank you!
Glad you like it!
I find your videos so informative and EASY to understand. I can't wait to try this technique .
Thank you for putting the times AND titles in the description box, that helps me a lot!
You have the best knitting tutorials ever, super well explained, and in a clear and thoughtful way. I'll be trying your 3-step method in just a few minutes.

I was in the same boat, for 19 years. I was a slave to the pattern instructions. It makes such a difference to take control of your own knitting!
I'm trying to do that and I like it. With help like yours, I'll get there. :-)
Thank You!
They're really simple steps, but the way it fixes the issue is so impressive. Love this video.
Glad I found this video before my 1st circular needle project. Thank you!
If you want to get right to her three trick method, go to 5 minutes into the video. Love it!
Your videos are always so-o-o-o helpful. You are a great blessing to every knitter.
Excellent! You are such a superb knitter and teacher!
I find this fascinating as I learned the cable cast on, and never have any issues with tidy joins or guessing where to start so as not to run out of yarn. but love watching your problem solving.

The best jobless cast on in the round so far😊 Thank you
I love this its the best description of joining in the round and what happens thanks so much!
Thank you for this new method of casting on and joining in the round.the finished product looks so much nicer. Will definitely give this a try.
I usually start with a twist instead of a slipknot (same as you! I feel vindicated XD) and cast on one extra. love your method instead of the first 3 shown. thanks so much for doing this video.
Fabulous solution to an irritating problem! Thanks!

The best jogless join I've seen, thank you!
SAVED! You went over one that I knew and three new ones that I can try. Your method is beautiful though.
Excellent tutorial with such clear photography.
I'm glad you liked it!
Thank you so much for this video.
I did your 3 trick technique for a jogless cast on in the round for a hat I just finished and it worked like a charm!
This is now my go-to method for knitting in the round!
This is a great video. I am a long time knitter and your 3 tip finish is the cats meow!
Thanks Rox - really useful. I will be using your version for my cast ons from now on ! great result 🥰
Thank you for this explanation! I recently got back into knitting after learning 9 years ago after doing my first few projects. And now I'm back! I remember those jogged edges well.... lol. Now I know how to prevent those as I love on to more projects!

Thank you so much for this video. I used your 3 step method on a pair of socks but it will be my go-to cast on for my knitting in the round projects.
Thank you for giving me many options for cleaning up my in the round work. Looking forward to trying them all.

I can't wait to try these three tricks!
Wow your technique looks great!
I've always used the tail on a big needle to join it prettier, before weaving in the tail, but this is so much easier ☺️
Thank you, Roxanne! ❤️🙏🏼❤️
I like the method where you cast on an extra stitch. Thank you for the tutorial. Like you, I don't use slip knots either. I will definitely try your '3' step technique, as I am always happy to run into new techniques.
Fantastic! Thank you very much for this ! This is the best method ever!
thank you for this video! A lot of videos or patterns say weave in the ends and I have just tried my best to hide the ends and make it look nice but sometimes not. Love your last method.
Being a bit of a perfectionist (toned down with age...lol) i will be usinv your 3-step method everh chance i get. Thank you so so much.
That’s really useful. I am going to use your technique
Thank God I found your video.👏🏾😃
Im so grateful for this detailed video ! 💚
Another great learning video and I at least saw that I was doing similar to you just from instinct Nice to see that my instincts were a good thing after watching you in this great teaching technique! ~~~Jo
I love that! Nice and clean!
Very informative. I'm saving this video.
Excellently done; explained and demonstrated.
Thank you so much! About 90% of my knitting is hats for charity, and I've always disliked how the cast-on edge had that gap/jog in it. It actually never occurred to me to look for a solution -- I've always just tried to even it out when sewing in my ends.
Thank you for this video! I’m starting my first sweater and will use your fix to join my work.
Wonderful!
the last one was worth waiting for, wonderful ... I wing this similarly but now I will know what I am doing. Thanx
Thank you for the explanation it's so simple to do.
Thank you sooo much, im cast on in your way "twisted" and the hat has aperfect join😍😍
Thanks for the tips! I really like your 3 tip finish!
Thank you. This looks very good.
Thank you so much for this demonstration. Trick #3 is definitely for me! I never liked that little jog on the edge of the sleeve and now there’s a solution to fix it! Yay!! ❤
Thank you! I will use this technique.
Thanks, I’m a perfectionist and this is great
Brilliant for me too for my new project - men's shooting socks - where the CO edge needs to be perfect as it's part of the look with a turn down 5-inch cuff
Brilliant. I've been waiting for someone to teach me this!
Your Tutorials are great .... thank you very much !!!
This is so helpful. Also, I really like your hairstyle.
Well looks like I’m going to unravel the ribbing I started last night lol really like the finished look thank you sooo much.
Ha ha-I can so relate!
@@4zengrl My husband doesn’t understand why we unravel. He says “Who’s going to know?” He’s just a man lol
Ha!
Thank you Roxanne. Your lessons are always so helpful ❤️
This is completely brilliant!!
Nice to have different options. Thank you!
Yeh it is fussy looks nice though. I will practice useing your method , cant hurt to practice. Thank you.
Love your sweater!
Ta da!! I love your technique!
Oooh! I usually just pass on the extra stitch and i dont like it, thanks for showing other ways to do this jogless join 😍
Brilliant video - thank you so much for all of these super clear options!
