Ggggg
I needed this video because as embarrassing as it is to admit I cannot flat iron my own hair at my big age of 41. Don't judge me 🤣🤣
Not embarrassing at all! You are a part of the majority there! That's why I make these videos 😊❤

*NO JUDGEMENT!* 🩷 If you, like lots of women, grew up with Mom, Grandma, or Auntie doing your hair at home or being taken to the salon, and continued relying on beauticians as an adult, it makes sense that you wouldn’t really know your hair or how to maintain, cut, and style it.
Out of frustration, my mom chopped off my and my sister’s hair when I was in first grade and my sister in Kindergarten. She left us with short Afros that we were responsible for taking care of. Every year or so, she trimmed our ‘Fros with clippers. Aside from that, washing and combing was up to us.
My sister, to this day, never really connected with her hair. I, on the other hand, did, and helped her care for hers.
The summer before starting 5th grade, I’d gotten my hands on a hot comb and taught myself to press my hair. My friend’s mom had pressed it once when I was in 4th grade and I paid close attention to what she was doing.
As an adult, I’ve had stints here and there when I went to the salon somewhat regularly, but health-wise, it did more harm than good. For the most part, I did my own hair and even taught myself to cut it. I’ve worn pixies, bobs, and layered cuts, all done and maintained by yours truly. I taught myself to use marcel irons and everything.
But I didn’t really learn what my hair needed for optimal health and length retention until I started a hair journey in 2016. I learned everything I know from UA-cam, Google, and logic. Now, my hair is denser than it has been in years and 4-5 times longer than it has ever been in my life. ❤
Lol this girl in high school way back when, brought her flat iron to gym and tried to flat iron her hair between changing out of gym clothes and before the next bell. I swear she passed over her one section of hair 20 times. Had the locker room smoking!!!!! I was like damn! I didn't know you could set a flat iron to "depths of hell"!
😂😂 sounds like me watching some of my students flat ironing their own hair!
Thank you so much for this much needed video. I do go to a professional, but I’m always interested in the proper techniques, and hair care. ❤
Glad you are doing a video after a while! I hope you are well.
Thanks! I have been filming more recently so I should be able to post more regularly. Thanks for watching!
@GetGlamFam you're appreciated!!! Been with u since the early days. Keep up the good work you're doing😊
Yes yes, more tutorials like this lol. Also, I will bring down my heat to 360, you know I have been convinced my hair wouldn't go flat at a lower level I think it's just from trying to do it all in a hurry, but, I'll section with fewer pieces. you just gave me something to do for an hour lol I just washed and blow-dried my hair this mo'nin
as always THANKS A BUNCH! GREAT TUTORIAL!
Such a pleasure! Thanks so much for watching this video, and I truly hope that the tips in this video prove helpful to you!
Linwood‼️‼️‼️You sir are the ABSOLUTE BEST 💯🙏🏾❤️ This tutorial was so informative and NOW I know what I was doing wrong for years. *Your style of teaching is stellar and straight forward.* You've just saved ALOT of people from heat damage and overuse of product.
His flat iron technique is SPOT ON. I do a few things differently:
1) Instead of “tapping” my roots with the flat iron, I press my roots, nape, and edges with a traditional (non-electric) hot comb one small section at a time. A mini hot comb is great for snatching short, tiny perimeter hairs. I think using a hot comb in this way creates a more finished look. If you don’t know how to gauge the temperature on an old-school pressing comb, an electric one will do fine. Many of them have temperature gauges now.
2) I then divide those sections into TINY sub-sections, even smaller than those in this video, and flat iron them. The smaller the sections the greater the chance of direct heat getting to each strand of hair. This allows for silky-straight results at a lower temperature.
3) Since the chase method requires so much dexterity, I attach a self-adhesive heat-resistant comb to my flat iron which leaves me with a free hand.
4) I wear heat-resistant forefinger and thumb covers (or heat-resistant glove) on my free hand and lightly pinch the tip of the flat iron during each pass. This helps me get a tighter squeeze with the iron and a smoother result.
5) Like demonstrated in this video, I make very slow passes in a downward motion. One pass is all that’s necessary. But I don’t go so slow as to leave the iron in one place too long and potentially burn my hair.
Personally, I never add more heat by creating curls with a curling iron once I’ve flat ironed my hair. I will either wrap my hair or pin curl it. ❤
Hey friend, where do you get the comb? That's what I need because my mind and hands don't work together with the chase method.
I would be grateful to know where you can get such a comb? It sounds like just what I need. Please tell us.
Hard to use the comb when flat ironing your own hair, but it makes such a difference!
I give a tip for that as well toward the end of the video 😊
@GetGlamFam thank you!!
@@myhusbandmylead520 Such a pleasure! 😊
@GetGlamFam new subscriber! I am thankful to have found your channel!
You can buy a comb that attachs to your flat iron
Also use some type of heat protector and a white cloth to test the flat iron heat
Yes indeed! Thanks!
What?!?! HOW does that work!!! Teach us!!! 🙂↕️
Nice! The flick of the wrist. 360 is hot enough.
That light tilt makes such a big difference! Thanks for watching fam!
Would you ever consider a video on hygiene with hair tools and things to look out for in salons? I've been wondering what's the best ways to clean brushes, combs and hot tools like blow dryer brushes when dealing with scalp yeast infections/dandruff. I currently just clean them with an anti dandruff shampoo but idk if thats enough. I haven't figured out what to do with revair though
Linwood, can you please explain the difference between using titanium, and ceramic flatirons.
Absolutely! I have a full video that does just that to help you determine what is best for your hair. Here is the link:

Thank you! Happy to see you back over here! 💛🤗

Hey Linwood
It's been a while! How are the girls? Hope all is well. Trying to play catch up with your videos.
Anywhoo
Thank you for teaching this technique.
Traveling mercies to ya!
Smooches!❤
Thanks so much! The girls are great! I’m glad the videos have been helpful, thanks so much for watching!
I've missed your videos. I've loc'd my hair however I luv your videos. You've educated is for free, for years.
THANK YOU
Definitely using these techniques for my next silk press. Thank you!
You are so on time. I recently had knee replacement surgery. I have been doing my impression of Ciely with these braids. I have taken this time to do some deep conditioning while my hair is resting and waiting for meds to exit my system. By the end of July, I'm going to flat iron my hair and return to normal ( thanks for the flat iron suggestion, I've been searching for a good one). This technique will be followed to the minute. Thank you Linwood, you always come through when needed.
Love you, Linwood!! Thank you for always teaching us! You are amazing and appreciated!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Hey fam! Love you back! Thanks so much for the feedback!
This video was a big help for me. With getting the knowledge about the right temp and technique hopefully hair won't smell burnt. Thanks!
What do you use as heat protection? Also, are you able to do a tutorial on 4c, thanks?
The Doux has a new line called Press play, every product in that line has heat protection built in. I am working on a video of me talking about the line now, it should be out soon. I can definitely do a silk press video, I'll add it to my list! Thanks for watching!
@@GetGlamFam thank you for the fast response
This was AWESOME...I NEVER FLAT IRON MY HAIR BUT AFTER MORE TUTORIALS AND TWEAKING MY TECHNIQUE...I WILL BE THERE SOON
I’ve been on a journey of learning to properly take care of my natural hair. So the couple of times in a year that I might need to blow dry and flat iron it, it helps to know the proper techniques. I’d hate to have come this far to turn around and re-damage it with heat. I truly appreciate your hair care tips. I’ve learned so much from you. Thank you 😊
Thank you sso much I have been doing it wrong for a long time and I stopped using a flat iron totally. Now I am going to start again thanks to you .
Love it! Can you do blow drying and a review of what a person should look for in purchasing a blow dryer?
OMG, you BEAUTIFUL being!! Thank you so much for the self flat ironing brush tip!! I struggle with coordination to get the desired sleekness when doing my own hair. I drop the comb and burn my fingers countless times. 😂😂😂
Absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
You are the absolute best! Thank you for your time and talent and all you do!
You are an excellent teacher! Thanks for sharing.
I am so glad to see you are back🎉❤😊
It’s great to be back! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much, I’ll definitely use it next time I’ll iron my hair ❤ just so you know the tip or technique you shared about steaming the wig was amazing, I love trying something that turns out exactly what it’s claimed to be I subscribed right away 🙏
We appreciate you love....I've been watching you for years! Great video👏🏾🙌🏾
😮 I went to beauty school and never knew that. Sharing by knowledge is everything. Sending you some love ❤. Thanks
Thank you. I learned my method wasn’t as bad as I assumed and I learned how to improve.
Thanks for showing the brush. That will better for me when flat ironing my own hair. 🙏🏽
This was definitely very helpful. I love these types of videos. 💜
Love this very helpful! I would love a video with flat iron and heat protectant suggestions. ❤
Thank you for this lesson.
Hi Linwood, I too am guilty of using my flat iron the wrong way. After, watching your video, I now will do better. They say, “when we know better, we do better.” Luv yo❤u
So I need to get me a nylon brush! Thank you kindly!
Absolutely! I love using that technique when flat ironing my own hair ( when it's longer because I am not about to flat iron this baby fro lol) Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing, great tutorial, could never understand what i was doing wrong.
This is definitely needed!!
I’m glad you think so! Thanks for watching!
Unrelated but I saw your video and I had to comment 😁 You're looking so healthy and I hope you're happier these days. Blessings to you and yours ♥️.
Excellent video on technique!!!😊
Thank you so much for the educational tips and your super funny humor! Much Love from Florida ❤️
Wow, i needed this tutorial back before I cut my hair and tried getting it as nice at home as it was when I left the salon.😕👍🏾❤️
Very helpful! I’d ❤ to see this tutorial on type 4 hair. TY
yaaayyy a new how-to! thank you
Excellent video! Thank you!!
Thank you for sharing. I’m sure this will help me.
You are a great teacher.
Extremely helpful. Who knew.
I appreciate the feedback, thanks!
Thank you! What products do you suggest to use on 4c natural hair when flat ironing?
great technique
Thanks for the video, very helpful! I would love to see you make a video where you do it on wet to dry flat irons? And you give us your take on them. I hope that you have a blessed one 🤗.
Awesome. Great tip😊
Thank you so much! I needed this
Very nice and I was always telling people to take smaller sections and they always say they know what they're doing
Yes! Small sections makes such a huge difference! Thanks for watching!
Thank u soooo much imma try this expeditiously ❤😂
Thank you for this video. I needed this I have struggled with flat ironing my hair for years. I don't know if you have already done this video but could you please show how to wrap hair properly to maintain a silk press.
Loved this informative video!❤
I swear you read my mind. I was going to ask you to do a flat iron video but I didn't get around to it. I always end up doing a hundred passes. But I'm trying to get rid of the indentation I cause in the process of trying to bend the hair. I'm going to try taking the flat iron straight down just as you did. Thanks Linwood for posting this! Sorry if I spelled it wrong.
Excited to try this method.. I have yet to straighten my hair without any product. BTW love your braiding videos !
You can use product, I just chose not to so I could emphasize the impact of proper technique. Thanks for watching!
Doing another amazing and correct video and Im the 1st one❤. The flat iron turned up to Hells Kitchen not necessary...lol
Thanks fam! I hope the tips prove helpful! Thanks for watching!
I struggle with the chase method. Your techniques will be very helpful to me. ❤
If you have a hard time with the chase method, the nylon brush tip would be a great help for sure! Thanks for watching!
So helpful! Thank you😊
My joy! Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you for this post. I don’t feel intimidated about flat ironing my hair now.
Helpful, thank you😊
My joy! I appreciate you so much!
thk u I needed this tip
Thanks now I know to use smaller sections floating ironing my hair. The chase method takes practice. Can you do a update on curling your hair with a flat iron? Thanks
I really appreciate this video. ❤
I need so many tutorials at 43. I've always stuck to figure it out. And THAT'S why I have broken off the crown area of my hair. It's slowly growing back. ☺😅
Very helpful thank you❤
Love it that’s correct
Thank you great video
Thank you!
This was great! Thank you.
Can you give a lesson on how to silk press 4B/4C (African American hair)?
Also, I have difficulty using a comb with the flat iron when sulking /flat ironing my own hair. There is an awkwardness that does not happen when pressing someone else’s hair.
Finally, how do we find the right heat protection products for my hair type? I have low porosity hair. I find I MUST perform hydration treatments biweekly for products to work properly.
Thank you in advance for taking my question.
Love you!!
Great tutorial, learned a lot. Would LOVE to see more . I would like to see how to make beach waves. Just a bend. I’ve been practicing, I just can’t get it. Any one out there that could give me a few tips 🌷😊
Thank you very helpful.
Thank you so much for your advices.i want to know how to manage frizzy hair in humid environment?
The dreamcoat spray from color wow is great for that! Here is a link if you’d like to check it out: amzn.to/3RQ3CW7
Even though my hair is short, I always appreciate a good flat iron technique video. Question though, how do you feel about the little comb attachment that is out that fits on the side of some flat irons? It appears to work well in the videos i have seen.
Well I will echo what quite a few people said:
-Thank you. My technique has been getting better. But this will bring it up a notch, esp. the part where you “flip your iron and pull down; and
-yes, please do a demo with type 4 hair, 4C even better.
Great tips as always ❤, I always wonder why my hair gets straighter and lasts longer when using a flat iron versus a straightening comb?
Blessings 💚💜
I needed this thank ❤you
very helpfu.
Thank you so very much ❤
Thank You!!!
Thank you
My joy! Thank you so much for watching!
Hello Mr Linwood please give some thought on making a class for men on proper care on how often we should cut our hair. How to wash and condition. We need help too.
Thank you for all you do.
Thank you this video.
Thank you ♥♥♥
HELPFUL!
Def needed ❤ It was the 460 devil for me😂
Thank you , I requested ❤❤❤❤
Hi Linwood!!!
Hey fam! How are you?
Thank you Professor for the tips. Is it OK on natural hair for girls of color to put on heat protectant first before flat ironing? Please advise 🙏🏾 ❤
Can you do it on a texture hair manikin please and thank you! Wasn't sure if you keep the same technique on someone with say a 4c hair texture or not.
Thanks 🙏💖
I've need this video my whole life. I promise you I can't flat iron my hair worth nothing 😂😩 Did you know they make a comb attachment for flat irons?
Thank you! My straightener goes up to 220 degrees max. Can this be achieved if I apply this technique correctly?
