      Yeah my chihuahua puppies don’t like that, plus they will want to sleep with me if I wake them up in the middle of the night... the night time barking is a pain. I have had them for 2weeks now. They are currently 10weeks old and do really well with sleeping and not making mistakes throughout the night. I put them down at 12am (walk before bed) and wake them up at 6am (walk in the morning). It’s been really hard trying to work and potty train them throughout the day. My major problem is with the fact that they are not leash trained yet, because every leash that I buy is waaay too big even the smallest of them all. So I’m current looking to custom make one for each of them. They are going to give me hell I know it 😂

    Play pens are so important and something I see a lot of my friends NOT use when they get a new pup (although I keep my advice to myself unless they ask). I kept my Lab in a play pen his first few months and let him earn his run of the house slowly. Whenever he was out of the play pen during those first few months, he was 100% supervised. Doing this helped keep him from getting into things and being destructive. For his entire life, he never destroyed a single thing in the house (he passed away a couple of years ago). Most people I know get a dog and just let them loose in the house to explore and do whatever they want....and that's what the dog does. Whatever he wants -- which YOU don't want. I'm picking up a mini Bernedoodle in a week and plan on raising him the same way.

    Rachel is freakin awesome and amazing!!! I bought a 10 week old puppy last week. Today was my first day off with it, meaning a full day to work with it. I’ve done exactly as you mentioned, take it out every 1-2 hours. After a week of frustration, with it doing it’s business anywhere and everywhere around the apartment, yet the moment I take it outside….nothing. Today with me keeping on top of it all day, it’s gone on it’s own….outside all three times. The third time was a bit of a struggle. I figured we’d go inside and try it again in 15 minutes. It started sniffing the carpet, going around in circles, and I immediately remembered you mentioning that when looking for signals. I took her outside, and we are now three for three for the day, no inside accidents so far today.

    This is absolutely brilliant. Our first dog (who is now a grandpa dog!) was trained by being locked in a bathroom with puppy pads by his original owner. He would look for any rug in the house (because it looked like a puppy pad to him, poor guy) to potty on. When we adopted him, our only goal was “potty outside.” Puppy pads were not an option, so we did this very method you’re showing in this video and it worked! Now, years later, we’ve introduced a new puppy and I’m like, ehhh, maybe we should just do the hard-core week of taking this new doggo outside every two hours like we did with our older dog. People have been calling me nuts, and telling me to be lazier and use puppy pads, so I’m SO GLAD I found your video! I’m doing it this way. It’s a week of my life and the rest of my dogs life, so totally worth it. Thank you!

  • @MrLanzac
    @MrLanzac Рік тому +26

    This is the most honest and best guide. Simply put is put the work in early, don’t be lazy and potty training is easy …there still may be accidents but they’ll be far far far less (in some cases less than two hands worth.)

    Just wanted to say that I know this video is older but this past Sunday I rescued a puppy after watching her run across a five lane highway. I could tell by the way she was walking that she was terrified after crossing the highway so I had to turn my car around and go back to check on her. She was starving and so dehydrated that she was struggling to even stand up. We really weren't planning on keeping her but she quickly stole our hearts. I was SO scared that I wouldn't be capable enough to train her BUT we followed all of your tips and she is doing SO WELL!!! She's been home from the vet for 5 days and is already going to the door to be let outside! Just wanted to say I really, REALLY appreciate the helpful advice/tips. You've definitely earned a life long sub from us. Hope you're doing well! 💜💟

    This is the perfect video for me. My pup is 9 weeks and looks exactly like yours. Crate training is going great. I set alarms to take him out at 11 pm, 1:30 am, 4 am, and 6 am. However, during the day I take him out at least every hour, but he'll still have an occasional accident during playtime. He's easily distracted, even when I have treats, and tries to eat everything on the ground. No way I can have him off leash when outside. In the house he'll leave everything. Outside he'll eat everything.

    This video helped me a lot with my new puppy.. they only thing I didn’t like was “it’s your fault if your puppy has an accident in the house”... not only are puppies adjusting to a new environment but new puppy owners are adjusting as well. Puppies are ALOT of work. I have 3 children & I think my new puppy is way more stressful. I can take him out to potty & he will still come inside & have an accident. & don’t forget the “puppy blues” a lot of owners go thru. Good luck to the new puppy owners I heard it gets easier😅😅

    • @nicolekrajniak9727

      well it’s your fault if the puppy has an accident, but it’s normal to make faults and to not be perfect. There was literally no judgment within the comment. Maybe you’re a perfectionist but it’s really not bad to make a mistake or something not being perfect :)

    • @mamadeborah1999
      @mamadeborah1999 Рік тому +2

      Nique I agree with you. Saying it's owners fault is not productive. That's why we call them accidents. Unexpected situations we cannot always control.
      No one can follow a puppy around 24/7 and watch perfectly their every move. It's a learning process for both owner and puppy. Just do your best and hopefully puppy will catch on!

    I watched this right before we got our puppy a few weeks ago and I can comfortably say that he is house trained at 8 almost 9 weeks now in just under a week. We incorporated a hanging bell and he knows to run over and hit it with his nose anytime he needs to go out. And he has only had 1 or 2 crate pee accidents (both my fault) since we got him. He whines when he needs to go out during the night and we’ve got it down to only 1 time a night he needs to be let out. Great video…. I just got a rescue puppy yesterday and managed to potty train him within about 7hrs… he’s 8-weeks old and 8.5 pounds (Golden CavPom Mix)… after 3 mishaps in my home office, now he cries whenever he needs something … no issues ever since and he held his bladder all through the night in his crate…. He’s a very smart boy

    • @justinrice1171
      @justinrice1171 6 місяців тому

      @tim.m2I work from home which helped so all I did was shut the door with him in my office and just monitored him…. The moment his nose went down I grabbed him and would grab his paw and use it to paw the door quick before letting him out of my office and into the yard…. If he attempted to pee a bit or was mid pee I’d pick him up and again repeat the process…. The key is to not let any accidents happen which will expedite everything….. eventually I transitioned him onto the bell

    • @justinrice1171
      @justinrice1171 5 місяців тому

      @tim.m2 you just have to be on top of it with no mistakes.... You just watch the dog like a hawk and the moment their head goes down to sniff you bring them outside... If they start to pee inside you just grab them and bring them outside to finish.... Just need to be very aware and on the ball... I work from home so I just locked him in the office with me and had him trained in no time. If a mistake happens, clean it very thoroughly so the smell of pee is gone so they dont think it's okay. Thats the best advice I can give.... Eventually I transitioned to using his paw to scratch the door before I bring him outside and eventually he just started scratching the door whenever he wanted to go out.

    This is an amazing video. Got a 10 week old puppy just over a week ago and he is not having accidents in the house anymore. Followed these tips very closely, when my pup has his nose down and circling it's time to go out! One helpful tip I'd like to add is take notes of the times the puppy was last out/watered/ate. This will help you know approximate times the pup will need to go so if you see the nose down and circling then you better grab that pup and run! Lol

After just 3 days he is fully house broken! He whines to go out, and knows it is no "nature scavenger hunt", does his business and then runs back to the door to be let in. Because he was potty trained so fast, we now almost have him fully crate trained too, as he does not go pee or potty inside his crate!! We have been very fortunate with our 12 week old rat terrier. We've had her for 2 weeks and she came from an Amish family who apparently was already working on housebreaking. Bella only pottied in the house the first day, TWICE right at the back door. We just opened the door and said outside and she has not gone inside since. She goes out before bedtime around 10 pm and once around 3-4 in the morning. She starts to whine in the kennel to let us know she needs to go! We're realistic and know she may still have accidents etc so we're prepared and just use positive reinforcements. She has also learned sit, stay, drop (to drop something she isn't supposed to have) and stay! "Come" has been a bit more difficult. She has SO MUCH energy! But she hit's it more than she misses! We really are blessed. We love your channel and will continue to use your advice and techniques.

She was peeing literally every 5 min not emptying her bladder fully each time. She would go pee outside, but once inside she would pee again minutes later. We added a bell lanyard (we also have a doorbell that our other dog uses). Between letting the pup out every 10 minutes and looking to see if she was sniffing around, we stopped her from going potty in the house, she's pretty much potty trained in under 6 days! she also she uses the doorbell andor bell jingle!! thank you rachel!!!

    So, sooo true. The initial hard work and a few disturbed nights makes the world of difference. I try to stay away from training pads because it takes much longer and I feel confuses your pet. But for some I totally understand this is an necessity. I take my 6 week old out three to four times during the night and continuously throughout the day, although impossible if you're not working from home. Hardly any sleep for a couple of weeks but in the long run it will pay off. Total dedication and continuity required which for some ould prove to be impossible, but if you can do it, definitely worth the effort. Very patient with him, too, as they are only babies, so accidents will happen. He sleeps in my bed, (bad practise perhaps but it works for us) and yet to have a wet bed! ❤

    We've had our 9 week old puppy for 6 days now (almost 1 week), following all your instructions. My husband and I set alarms through the night for 2.5 hours and we take it in turns taking him out. He has no accidents through the night, but within the first hour of being awake, he does at least 1 - 2 wees outside then tries to wee at least 2-4 more times inside. How can he hold it for 2.5 hours through the night, then need to go multiple times within an hour in the morning? I've lost so much work time this week trying to work from home, I've spent no time alone with my kids, and one person in the family is always on dog duty watching him and missing out. So far, we’re 6 days in and it's exactly like day 1 when we brought him home. What are we doing wrong that we haven't been able to train him like you said in one week?

      If he can smell where he has gone before he'll mark it again. Clean the spots each time with vinegar and water or something from pet store so he can't smell there. That is why I think puppy pads help the process if you can't time their peeing each time. It has that smell they want and Willmar there and not your floor or carpet.

    • @loriwoo8408
      @loriwoo8408 2 роки тому

      The training process is for them to learn to hold it and go outside so you can praise them when they do. It doesn't hurt to get them to run around outside to further stimulate their need to go....usually soon. Many people walk their dogs several times a day and that is when they go because it stimulates the need to go.

    Can confirm. With my puppy, I had to take her outside every hour on the hour throughout the day and night for two weeks, then worked up to two hours for a week, then three hours for a week, then 4 hours for three weeks....and so on with the slow work up. It was a challenge and she had a few lapses for the first 6 months.
    One thing of note for anyone that may be struggling with their dog: my puppy probably took longer than usual because she had chronic UTIs. You may not notice until it gets bad and the puppy is just dribbling and peeing like a leaky faucet. We found out it was related to her food by buying doggie UTI test strips (has to be for dogs) and her urine when eating her old food was very alkaline. What helped my dog: a combination of new kibble and adding raw food to her diet. I just added raw food as a kibble topper and in a daily Kong for my puppy. Her urine got to normal levels and now she's a happy dog that can hold her pee.

    I just got my new 8 week old pup 4 days ago. Ive been trying to educate myself to training pup. My pup doesn't give any signs of having to go potty. I feel like Im not going to get anywhere if I keep missing the opportunity to teach her. The other thing is Ill take her out after all the key times. After naps, after eating and drinking, after playtime ect. Of course we can sit outside to go potty for an hour, but comes inside and goes potty. Its frustrating because I seem to be following all the steps and no progress. Granted she's only been here 4 days and if she'd just give me a sign that she needs to go. She also will just roll in the grass and roam around instead of getting her business done when we're outside. She's super smart, Ive already trained her a few basic commands, so what am I not getting?

She's learned that if we see her sniffing around in the hallway, we get excited, clap our hands and rush her outside. But she'll do this also to go outside just to play with bugs, at 2 am! I try to ignore her if I know she doesn't have to go to the bathroom because I want her to get over that. Lol. She's a very smart English Shepherd and Ive realized just how smart she is already. 1. **Allow Complete Bladder Emptying:** After a puppy goes potty outside, don't immediately bring them back inside. Young puppies may need to go multiple times to fully empty their bladder.
    2. **Prevent Crate Accidents:** Take your puppy outside every 1-4 hours, depending on their age and size. Even wake them up at night every 2-4 hours to avoid accidents in the crate.
    3. **Limit Exposure and Freedom:** Use baby gates or playpens to restrict your puppy's movement within the house until they are fully potty trained. This helps you keep a closer watch on them.
    4. **Distinguish Potty Break Time:** Separate potty breaks from playtime outside. Don't make the outdoors overly exciting during potty time to avoid confusion for the puppy.
    5. **No Punishments:** Don't punish your puppy for indoor accidents. Puppies don't have full bladder control, so punishments won't be effective and may cause fear or stress.

    This is the way I recently potty trained my Chihuahua. I litter trained it, as opposed to letting it go outside, and it was by far the easiest and the best method I have ever used.
    So what I did was purchase a 24 X 18 wire doggy crate and put a doggy bed, a doggy blanket, and some doggy toys inside it.
    At the same time, I also purchased a 24 X 18 solid plastic container with high sides that I customized into my new doggy litter box by using a hack saw to cut out an opening on one side of the container large enough so a Chihuahua can enter and exit it easily. Then I added an inch layer of pine pellets to the floor as the litter material.
    Next, with the Chihuahua puppy inside the doggy crate I butted the doggy crate opening to the doggy litter box opening. As the idea was that the Chihuahua puppy would sleep and play in the doggy crate but when it needed to eliminate, it would eliminate in the doggy litter box. Guess what, it worked like a charm.
    So for the first three weeks, I kept this up only letting the Chihuahua puppy out to bond and play after I saw that it had very recently eliminated.
    Then after three weeks, I slid the doggy litter box out about a foot and a half away from the doggy crate. Then I monitored my new puppy closely throughout the day to see if she was using the doggy litter box like she was supposed to, and she did flawlessly.
    Then subsequently, I slid the doggy litter box on each successive day a little closer and closer to the final designated location for the doggy litter box I had previously picked out. When the litter box was in its final designated location, I then considered my new puppy fully potty trained.
    In any event, this was not only by far the easiest time I ever had potty training a Chihuahua puppy, but it was the first time I ever trained a Chihuahua puppy without having any puppy mistakes.
    Moreover, a litter box, as far as I'm concerned, is not only the easiest way to train your pet because your pet essentially trains itself, but overall it's the best solution as well. As I don't have to worry about maintaining a set schedule to let my puppy out. I don't have to worry about whether it is snowing or raining outside or if it is freezing or too hot. I also don't have to worry about leaving the puppy alone for an extended time period. I also don't have to worry about fleas, ticks, mosquitos, or my dog getting a disease another dog left behind. I also don't have to worry about other dogs attacking tiny Chihuahua since she always remains inside the home.
    As far as the litter material goes, I highly recommend pine pellets because it virtually eliminates all odors and it is quite easy to work with. It's also far cheaper than other kinds of litter materials and does a far better job at eliminating odors. As you can buy a 40 pound bag of the stuff at Tractor Supply Company for $6.79 plus tax and you will use only about two to maybe three bags a year. Meanwhile, when a dog or cat urinates on the pellets, the pellets disintegrate into odorless saw dust.
    To make cleaning my doggy litter box easy, I purchased a sifting cat litter box as a cleaning aid only. So what I do to clean the litter box since I always flush down the toilet any solids as soon as I see them, is empty the doggy litter box in the sifter of the cat litter box. Then I sift the sawdust in the sifter into the cat litter box below. When all that remains in the sifter is pine pellets, I then empty the sifter back into my doggy litter box and then add about a scoop to a scoop and a half of pine pellets to make up for what was used. Then I empty the sawdust in the cat litter box from below the sifter into the trash since it is odorless. Lastly, I wipe everything down and put everything up until the next time. As I clean my doggy litter box out about once a week.

    When I say no and try to redirect him with a chew toy, he is either uninterested and continues to chew / pull or he takes the toy for a few seconds before losing interest and either goes back to previous chewing or does something else.
    Also when I take him outside, he takes a long time before he actually does a wee's or poo. like 20 mins or so. Just bouncy energy all the time.
