Thank you so much! I just adopted a dog, and he was never house trained. I have been able to teach him to go outside. When I first brought him home, he was just going EVERYWHERE! I would take him outside and nothing. I started taking him outside every hour. Nothing was working. Then, my husband and I also started going outside, I know, it is gross, but it worked. He goes outside most times, but at night (I even take him outside before bed) he gets up and goes in one of two places in the house. If I happen to hear him up, I take him out, and that usually works. One more thing, he refuses to get up in the morning with my husband! He will only get up with me. So, I need to work on that. Thank you for all your help!
How about when your puppy is not allowed to go outside because he didnt finalised his vaccine scheme ? We are about to welcome our puppy who will be 7-8 weeks old at that time. The vet told us that only 2 weeks after his last vaccine meaning only on 14 weeks old we can start taking him outside, until than we will need to teach him on a pad. How can you switch from a pad to outside ?
My blaw gave us a dog..said she was trained but she is not. She is a 5yr old shitzu when i fees her i leave her outside for a couple of hrs but she looks like she is waiting till she comes back in and uses it in the garage. Thats where i keep her at for now(its air conditioned,i have a crate but when she is in the garage is wide open so she can move around whereever..soooo i should put her in the crate when shes in the garage?? I dont even want to bring her inside with her do8ng rhat..i have a play pen.i could put her at the botton of the stairs but im not good with the urine and poop in the house..my wife is ready to give up on cookie and giver back to her brother...cookike is also kinda of atubborn..what adjustments do you suggest?
I’ve had dogs all of my life and this seems like a bunch of crap. I’m very sorry if that sounds crude. The only thing I have ever done is take them outside. Maybe a little walk. As soon as they smell another dog, they go.
I foster dogs dogs and am responsible for potty training the majority of them. Typically, this process takes about a week to complete. I follow similar techniques to those demonstrated in the video you shared. Your explanation was clear and concise, and I greatly appreciate your guidance on this matter.
Hm it's been a month and now she started peeing in my bedroom... And today I had to give her a wash (she got into mud outside) and she wants too enthused about it, and after that she peed in our bed the first time. Ive followed all the rules.... Oh well I'll just keep going.
@@MoneyStrategiesSOULutions If she's peeing in your bedroom or on your bed, you aren't watching her. Keep her crated or on a leash so she doesn't have the opportunity to pee in the house. Some dogs are more stubborn than others. I had one that took six months to train. Once she learned to go outside, she never had another accident.
@@MoneyStrategiesSOULutions If it were me I wouldn't let her in the bedroom unless in a crate until she's house trained now. Their scent is so much better than ours, she can still smell it, however well you think you cleaned it. We have 50 million smelly buds, she has 220 million! Don't let her do it twice, either keep her closely confined in there or outside the bedroom altogether with a babygate, or you'll end up needing a new bed...
I use a cheap leash for puppies with a loop. I see it as umbilical cord and constantly have the leash in my hand or near me. This way I have total control and can notice every sign my puppy shows. I don't let my puppy run around freely. I started doing this in the 1980's, when I had a Rottweiler puppy and several small children. Potty training went so perfectly well, that I did this with all my other puppies and also worth my current puppy. With 17 weeks I start letting my puppy run free a little, but I keep him supervised when he goes about freely. Also leash training is so much easier if you have your puppy on the leash at home also. Staying together 24/7 for the first months, helps the bonding experience. Recall works perfectly outside as well, when my puppy is allowed to explore a field or grass areas when going on adventure walks together. When potty training, I go outside so often that my puppy will only have accidents outdoors. I set him up for success by keeping him that close. The number of potty repetitions is so high that the puppy understands it even before being able to control his bladder, which happens around week 12. When my puppy is 13 to 14 weeks old, the puppy can go potty on command. My current puppy was able to do this with 12 weeks straight. Of course I took him outside for potty time before and after sleeping, eating, an regularly in the rest of the time, starting with potty time every single hour. Meanwhile we go outside every 3 hours, and before and after sleeping and feeding. Until my puppy was 16 weeks old, I carried him outside when waking up, to prevent accidents from happening inside while walking to the house door. My current puppy is the first winter puppy, which is both positive and negative: puppies go faster potty when their feet are cold and wet, so success happens fast, but every time we go outside, I have to dress up for the cold weather. So I sleep in jogging pants and put on a sweatshirt in the morning after waking up. All the other times I dress up more, as winter in Germany is cold. I also go on extended adventure walks with my puppy and we make many breaks on some random benches, where my puppy can observe the changing environment with people, dogs, cars, etc. This way he gets acquainted to daily happenings, which helps with socialization.
Hi Lisa! We have a short video where Susan shared her thoughts on umbilical cord training, here's the link for you: ua-cam.com/video/HU9Ro89co1E/v-deo.html
I used a crate, a puppy play-pen and a leash. But the most successful part was taking her ball outside. She’d see it and I’d say potty as soon as she finished her biz I threw the ball. She learned that when she pottied she got to play. It was fast!
That’s an awesome move on your part. I like to let them know there’s a reward coming when they listen also but never thought of it for that reason. I’m gonna try it with our new 10 week lab
That’s great that probably means she’s more moved by play time I feel like every dog has something that motivates them if it’s play or food lol yours sounds like it’s motivated by playtime ❤
Eh, but I’ve watched many videos and one of them said not to distract the puppies with anything exciting so they could focus to potty-what should I do?!
Trained my dog- no crate. Took a week or two. You have to diligently take them out. They’re going to mess up. They’ll eventually get it. Mostly you need some treats. Give your dog a yummy treat after they potty outside.
@@tooblessed573 I have an 11-week-old and she had a tough time at first. I resorted to hourly alarms on my watch and a little bag of training treats attached to the leash. I always take her to the same spot and we don't play when it's potty time. if she has an accident then I will still take her out afterwards even if she doesn't have to go. She is finally getting it so don't get discouraged in the beginning. it can take a few weeks but these dogs you see who are not effectively housebroken by a few months of age probably have misinformed owners.
@@eleonorakihlberg5937 Lazy until you need to travel with your dog and because you never placed them in a crate, kennel, or cage they don't know how to respond to it.
Susan, THANK YOU so much for this lesson. We've only had our 8 week old puppy for three days and she's already catching on that her leash means it's time to pee. When she's in her pen, our timer is set and through this, we've been lucky to avoid most accidents. I wish we had known this with our previous dogs and I'm so glad we binged your podcast before Isla came home. Many thanks (and HUGS! a nod to your other episode!) The Snow Fam
I needed to take a minute out of my day to thank you so very much. You changed my life. I spent two days attached to my puppy keeping her in my room and not just free rain of my house. Those two days were rough I was using to treats reward her after she went potty and now I point say go potty and she knows exactly what I’m saying plus I learned her bladder times length before I just kept taking her out over and over not know when she needed to go and then she would have accidents on my floor when we got inside. Well being attached to her when I take her out I now know she needs to pee about every 20 mins and ever since it’s been smooth sailing. Thank you thank you thank you!
One quick follow up question... How long does Susan keep the crate right next to her bed? When do you know it’s time to move it a little further away yet still in the bedroom? (For nighttime)
I am currently fostering an American Bulldog American Pitbull mix. He is around 4 years old. Never side and always heat outside in a kennel. I needed a refreshment course. I ve always had puppies and housebreaking was a breeze. This guy is being a challenge. This was very helpful. A big thank you.
I'm working on this with my puppy to wean him off the puppy pads that the family used in the litter's playroom. I never really liked the idea of using pee pads because that's an extra step to housebreaking that seems to delay the process and it's always better to give dogs the idea that going to the bathroom outside is what's expected of them. He's had a few pee accidents because he really doesn't squat (and not old enough to start lifting his leg) so sometimes it is hard to tell if he's about to pee, but taking him out after he takes a nap, eats or drinks, plays vigorously, and in the morning after he's been in his crate has been working very well. Usually he pees as soon as he gets outside. He doesn't always poop, but I think he just has to pee alot more often than he needs to poop. So far he has had 0 poop accidents in the house. I think for being just weaned he's doing amazingly well!
Great video on how to Potty train a puppy that you have just brought home!!! The most important thing that you have to learn is to have lots of patience and be very consistent with the whole process of potty training your new dog!!! 👍👍👍
Susan, I can't thank you enough for this video, which I had watched numerous times before getting our 7 1/2 week old pup last weekend :). Today is day 5 and the only accident we've had is when I let my husband watch the pup for 2 seconds (he did NOT watch your video!)! I think you are the only trainer that has advised to NOT reward your pup after pee or poop (unless I misunderstood) and my little pup has been perfect (because I've made him successful!). He has a gated area outside that he goes to, on his own now, and relieves himself within seconds (poop takes a little longer). He is actually now heading and looking towards the back door to signal us (still inside ex pen of course). Working on the earliest of stages in Crate Games and Puppy Games, but the one thing that has been a challenge is that he HATES the leash. Any time I pick it up he pulls like a crazy man. If you could do a podcast about starting to condition a puppy to be at least compliant on a leash, especially since you recommend that they wear one for training in the beginning. Or maybe I can figure it out, now that I think about it, maybe it has something to do with the collar grab game....but it sure would be helpful to have your guidance with an energy crazed puppy :) Thank you for all that you and your team do ;)
My last do had issues with house-training for a while. Then, I went out of town and left him with his breeder who had make 5-8 dogs. Mine came back trained. It was as if he learned: "Those dogs go outside in the yard! WTH?" I have a new pup here (got him 1 week ago), and am trying to do the standard puppy training. He was doing it initially, now he is regressing. 😞
Very helpful, thank you. Especially the zen attitude, because I was not doing that. My boy is 9.5 weeks old and thankfully I get to be home with him and I do take him out ALL THE TIME lol. But sometimes I miss the tell, and I was not handling it correctly. 😭 I will do better for my sweet boy.
This is very timely - thank you. I am having a harder time potty training this puppy than I have ever had. Have had her for a month now and she is not at all reliable. I’m doing most everything except I clip her to her crate with the door open because she just screams in the crate if she can’t see me. I took her x-pen down because she wouldn’t stay in there either without screaming. This is the first time I have had a puppy without having an older dog to help the pup along and boy can I see a difference. Thanks for the tools to get the job done!

@@lisasternenkind6467hm sounds like a lot of work to have them on a leash all the time. My puppy is SO active, and don't see that would be possible! For a while she was so good telling me she needed to go out - she cried by the door, but the last two days she doesn't.... And peed in my bedroom 3 times already too etc ...
@@MoneyStrategiesSOULutions Unless you want it to get worse, she either needs to be in the crate in the bedroom, or shut out of the bedroom altogether (babygate or shut door). Until fully housetrained she shouldn't be anywhere where there's carpet or bedding or she'll use them as they're nice and absorbent. You need to up your number of outside visits too I'm guessing?

Thank you so very much. I have learned so much. I got Misha after my Westy died and he was wonderful. He wouldn’t pee in the house for love or money but this little guy he’s a Maltese and he was very mistreated. He still is very shy of me he’s getting better, but I have noticed a lot of changes in him. The worst thing is he will pee around the trashcan in the kitchen and I can’t always see him. He’s so he poops in his little cage, which is a 4 x 4 and I pick it up right away but you have helped me so much with your advice thank you God bless you and keep up telling us what we need to do.
Hi Misha, thank you for sharing! You can totally do this, here's another episode with more help for you and your dog: ua-cam.com/video/pf6_E1TRYxU/v-deo.html
Thank you for this video. I think my big mistake is not putting a leash on my puppy before getting them outside to poop/pee. It's an important cue that I've neglected since I have a fenced yard. I will start today, using a leash. Accidents inside are infrequent but they are still happening so as you say, "It's on me" to do the proper training. Another thing that helps after cleaning up inside is to use "Nature's Miracle" in a spray bottle. It is an enzyme spray that breaks down the odor to discourage the puppy from using the same area again.
We just got 3 16months old puppies, I know, crazy, but they’re brothers. We’re following your rules, they sleep in the same pen, and no problems so far. We take them out every 3 to 4 hours in our yard and they’re doing well. Could use more advise on training 3 of them.
Wow! You sound like a superhero! You may find some extra tips and tricks here since your pups are a little older: ua-cam.com/video/pf6_E1TRYxU/v-deo.html consistency is key and of course lots of love.
Great advice: we have a baby Boerboel and at 4 months he’s doing great but not a fan of the crate: he’s a vocal boy and sings us a chorus of ‘get me outta here’!

I just got a puppy and i take her outside i go outside with her to let her do her business we stay out there for 10 to 15 mins to see if she goes to the bathroom but she doesnt go to the bathroom so when we bring her back in the house she goes to the bathroom on the floor and everything what can i do to fix this
My Mom left me her senior dogs when she passed. My house has always had potty trained dogs so I was scared when I got them. They were both 15 when they came to our home so I knew it would be tough! It only took about 2 weeks to get them trained.
Fantastic advice! I encourage all of my new puppy owners to watch your podcasts and this one, as with all of them really, but this one really is perfect and very well done. Thank you.
Couple things I've had real success with is pair the successful trip out to pee with a word. 'Hurry up' comes pretty naturally to me as 'm stood out there at 6 a.m. freezing my butt off so that's what I use. First week I say it after she goes and I tell her 'good hurry up' or I simply say hurry up as soon as she starts to go. Like you said there's no messing about, no talk no play just get it over with so we can both get back in where it's warm (or cool or not raining or whatever.) By start of the second week the word seems to start meaning something to her so I say it as I ck my spot and stop walking. Not rrepeatedly, like you said I don't want to distract her. I also don't clean up after her first week or 2 so she's in no doubt what this spot is for. Why I thin this is so good is later in life if I need her to do it in a weird place like at a noisy truck stop on concrete on a trip or on a little patch f astroturf in a hotel hallway or bathroom or something she's got a word queue as wel as al the other clues to help her get it. I had a Dobie who was so good about obeying this verbal queue she'd squat and really try, really strain anywhere if I just said the word. We called her our 'push-button pee-er.' Thnx so much for sharing these podcasts, you've really helped me work through and refine some things I was having trouble understanding how to straighten out. Very glad I found you.
Hey Susan! I really love and appreciate your videos, but I had a question. Why do we quietly praise instead of enthusiastically praise? I keep seeing conflicting information about this and just wanted a little clarification. Thank you!
What about praise, I understand not in the middle of the night but what about daytime potty successes? What kind of praise, verbal, cookies, what and how much?
It is very clear, thank you but I was wondering how to potty train a litter? How can you clip the leash on 4, 5 ...9 puppies to get them out after a nap, a play session or a meal ? If you take them out two by two, it is maybe too late for the ones remaining inside. Do you only start potty training once the puppy has gone to his new home ?
I found two stray dogs I took the men because they were abandoned on my street. For example a few months ago, a monster through five puppies away in a field across the street from my house. So when I found these two dogs and there was no owners around. The female was actually pregnant and weeks away from giving birth. I helped her give birth to the puppies and even gave one of them CPR. These were shepskies what's their half German shepherd and half husky some of them look like huskies and some of them look like a mix between the two with beautiful blue or blue and brown eyes! They are adorable. It took me forever to find homes for the puppies because I was very picky on who I chose this year in particular has been hard because my wife and I were in a car accident on our way to a wedding and both of our cars were totaled and the insurance company refused to pay out anything. So it left us with a whole lot of debt. And a very bad situation. So taking on 12 extra dogs was not something that we anticipated. Plus neither one of us are rich and I'm partially disabled due to a 30 ft fall 10 years ago where I broke my spine . But, we did the best we could and not only took care of the dogs we made sure that they had proper vitamins and everything that they needed to be as healthy as possible. We found owners for seven of the dogs and we still have three. Our daughter who is 18 and went in the Army recently had one of the dogs but because she can't keep her dog on base she brought it back home. So now we have three of the puppies that are 4 months old. Two of them are pretty good at using training pads. Are daughters puppy is doing the best he can and his learning because he came from using a yard already that was fenced in. We don't have a fenced in yard because we have two acres of land that we live on and it's just not in our budget right now to put up a fence. So we have to physically walk them on leashes so they don't run away. Now with all that said, my main issue is when I first wake up I have to pee and I'm on the second floor and being partially disabled it takes me about 5 minutes to get it together to get downstairs to get the dogs on the leash to get them outside. They pee as soon as I pee and when we wake up. And with them doing that it doesn't allow me to get them out of the door and get them outside I don't know what else to do at this point.
Eps sniffs in a small circle. Her tells are helpful. I trained potty on cue on lead with an old stable trick for cueing horses to pee. She has a specific whistle and she knows she has 1min to take any needed ablution before time is up. Epsilon has this cue worked out and I am grateful it works on horses and dogs. This clip is very helpful.
Hi Susan! Love your training videos! We have been binge watching prior to getting our 8 week old mini Aussie (-: We watched this video and have been trying to teach our pupper, but was trained to pee in a box which he does well, but doesn’t want to pee outside. What can we do? We have trained him that when the leash goes on it’s time to potty, but instead will play around with leaves on the ground. We do limit him to three minutes as you’ve suggested, should we give him more time?
Hello! I need some advice on how to approach a shelter 5 month old puppy who has never gone potty outside before. I have tried every method you listed in this video but she will not relieve herself outside. She have tried waiting it out outside for hours. We’ve tried the back and forth, but the second we bring her inside she will find a place in the house to potty. If we put her in the crate and walk away she will just potty in there. I can’t praise her for going potty outside and teach her that it’s a good behavior because she has never, not once used the potty outside. Your help would be SO appreciated!
Don't know if you've solved it by now, but I use puppy pads at night because she'd had them at the breeder's. I also started by putting a puppy pad outside where I want her to go, and initially she went on it, then she went near or on it, and sometimes I don't put it down (after two weeks home) and she'll now just go on the ground in the little pen I set up in the area I want her to use. Hope this helps if you're still struggling, I wish you luck
How exciting that you're getting a puppy! Congratulations! We have a wonderful Puppy Essentials playlist with more tips for you: ua-cam.com/video/rUIX5qW85tU/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
My puppy will not use it outside. I’ve ran her and walked her after eating over an hour. She won’t go. We come back and she goes on her crate. I watch for the signs and her crate is always near me. But she likes to go in the crate or just inside idky. This is so hard. Ppl make it seem so easy and it’s just not.
Hi Susan! You mention that the puppy ideally will start going towards the door when they have to potty. I'm just curious about that, because most of my pups free time is in one of various "gated community" expens, so they would not be able to walk themselves to the door to outside. Do you think they will start sitting at the door to the expen? Or do you give your pups much more freedom in the house much sooner than I realized?
I have a 7 month rescue boston terrier/ frenchie . She does not have any potty training. She is very ferial, so I know we have a lot of work ahead of us. I have noticed She poops in her sleep not a lot just like a pebble. I have also noticed that right after she eats she has to poop with in 3 mins. She also eats her poop and our other frenchie poop
I believe male dogs marking territory is more difficult, used to live outside, but now he lives/sleep inside the house with me. Ps. He is a adult dog now. And now I'm busy training my 4 week old female pup
@chantalvanstaden5322 So excited for you to be training your new puppy, and that you had success training your adult dog as well!😊 (Julie - DogsThat Team)
We lost our almost 15 year old Chocolate Lab Hunter about 1.5 months ago. Hunter was THE BEST boy, and we miss him so much. We just adopted Sully, our 14 week old Champagne/Cinnamon lab a few days ago. He is having mostly pee accidents in the house though I try as I might take him out often. I noticed he has been peeing in spots Hunter always loved to lie down. Could this possibly be a residual response, marking on Hunter's spaces? Hunter never had any inside accidents in our new house.
Hi @wiscogirl81, we're so sorry for your loss of Hunter, and thrilled that Sully is now your new best boy. It's important to remember that Sully is quite young and new to your home, and he's also still learning! Since you just adopted Sully a few days ago, we would recommend working through the protocol and building up the steps outlined here. Also Susan has a fantastic puppy playlist that will help you with many other puppy questions! ua-cam.com/play/PLphRRSxcMHy2hywpv3Md3HbWWPPbVF8W5.html We have no doubt that Sully will fit right into your new home. 💗 (Sarah - DogsThat)
@DogsThat Thank you! I am absolutely in love with Sully! He's mastered sit, (lie) down, and establishing a routine including crating him at night (till he's potty trained) which he is doing spectacular with! We are working on stay, and curbing nipping with positive reinforcement.. I'm working on helping Sully be as much a gentleman as Hunter was, and giving him his best life!!
I'm unsure if this will be read but if anyone knows the answer I would be grateful for the direction. How long do you leave your puppy in the kennel if he/she has not pottied? We had an episode yesterday where our puppy would not go potty in a new designated area and dug her paws in the 3 hours. She carried on in her kennel as if she was being killed. We took her out ever few minutes knowing she had to peee but she wouldn't budge. Finally it was getting to be bed time and we just threw up our arms and let her pee outside where ever she wanted to.
I've used an outdoor pen, (just a cheap and quite flimsy rabbit/pet pen), so she can be loose in the pen to choose her spot but is in a limited area just a couple of sqare metres.
Very good video. Thanks. I got a fake grass pee patch, but looking for real grass near exit door for indoor. While he is still a puppy (3 to 4 months) and slowly move that one outside too but once he knows how to signal someone to go out. I got lot of space inside the house where I can put a fake or real grass patch and one outside etc (big backyard) - question is: Should I have both indoor and outdoor option for him to do this at anytime he want? if I work in office away from home for 8 hours, and if I only choose outside then he don't know what to do and do pee indoor on tiles. Should I ? or provide both option. He is a small dog - Mini Cavoodle so he will be mostly living indoor - my first dog so I am not sure if it is OK to leave him outdoor under shed, in secure area with long leash on for 8 hours? like a large play area that is safe and on leash so he don't run away by mistake. Plus I have secure fencing so nothing to worry but still I will do a wall hook and a small patch for him to do business and chill out bed during day. With Auto kibble feeder with right portion - all of this is only when I am away from home 3 days a week. Would this work? And what about when I am home, still keep him outside as regular habit and bring him indoor when I want to play with him as a quality time? Or put a door on the security fence and let him in and out whenever he want? I see there are doors which can sense and open only for registered microchip number so it could be a good long term idea. do you think this is way to go? This is to avoid us waking up at 6:30 am on Saturday and Sunday morning when we had a big night - movie, outing on concert etc. Please advise. My puppy is already fast trained on fake grass area indoor, just in 2 days - very smart obedient dog and I am spending good time training him too. as I do WFH it helps. Oh btw, sorry for too long question.
Great video, Susan. I have the way I have watched it twice already. Issue: I get up between 2 and 3 a.m. and have always done so in my adult years. When I was potty training my dearly departed 11-year-old Boxer, I would take her out and tell her to go piddle. She would squat, go, and be done. Then, we would go back to bed. Should I start that with the new puppy? I'm unsure how much potty training the breeder will have done with the new puppy. My girl, Camo, came pretty much potty trained, and her last accident was at😅 6 months old, and it was because I didn't hear her bark. SO, my question is: Should I wake up my new puppy (Charlie) to go potty when I get up in the middle of the night?
I got a new puppy on Sunday and have been watching the puppy videos repeatedly. I have a question… My floors are hardwood and I’ve got her puppy pen setup in my living room. I’m wondering if I should put some washable rugs down for traction for her or wait until she’s more reliable with potty training? We’ve had one accident in 24 hours and it was obviously my fault cause I was blowing my nose.
i live in a 3 story condo and most of the time, the activity in the house is a family room at the basement level. There is no quick way to get outside without negotiating a flight of stairs. The quickest route is up the basement stairs and then through the garage to the yard. My concern with using the garage is the time it takes and noise to open the garage door snd its noisy. Would pee pads ever be an option for them in the play pen in the basement?
In Podcast 160: 10 Common Puppy Mistakes: What To Do Instead, Susan talks about why she does not encourage the use of pee pads while potty training our dogs. Here is where you can watch this episode --> ua-cam.com/video/Z1w1N54Px0A/v-deo.html (Julie - DogsThat Team)
Susan mentions that she would add links to some of the favorite products for ex-pen, gates and crates. I didn’t see them listed. Could you please post the links? An episode of her “favorite things” like Oprah does would be fun and helpful. With out the free giveaways of course!
Midwest homes for pets is a very reliable brand that has great xpens and crates with tons of options. Gates I often use high quality baby gates that you can find most places on the internet or parenting sites
Hi @adriennhollo6096 , great question! And yes, you can start following Susan's step-by-step now, it's not too late. Happy training! 🐾 (Elena ~ DogsThat Team)
Watching this video I realized that I have probably given our 10 week old pup too much space to explore while out for a potty break - so that's an easy fix. I do have a question - and you mentioned weather - but I do live in an area with every-changing and not always so pleasant weather (Newfoundland), especially in the winter and our so-called spring. What are your thoughts on training for outside and an indoor potty area (either a pee pad or a potty porch)? Am I inviting confusion or future challenges? Would love your insights.
How do you train rescued puppy farm dogs that are about 8 or 9. They go outside but won't ask to go out and will pee and 💩 in the house if given the chance?
Thanks so much! I might have a bigger creat for him. Also I have attached a pen with a space enough so he can pee on the potty training pad. That he is using after a put it (before he was peen inside the creat). How I go from there to no pee?
Maybe a good idea to get one of the frames that hold a puppy pad? Could you put it just outside your door, so she learns at least to go outside your flat. The frame stops them playing with it, not ideal solution but may help?
Hi Katherine, you can totally do this, congrats on your new puppy! We're leaving our Puppy Essentials playlist for you: ua-cam.com/video/rUIX5qW85tU/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
Hi, I love your videos! But pleaseeee help… I brought my 8 week of cocker spaniel home yesterday. I know it’s early days but I want to set her up for success from day one but it’s not going well with toileting so far… Ive tried taking her out on the leash but she just bites it so need to do more work with the leash. We go outside and nothing. She wees as soon as we come back inside. So I feel my timing is right but only one wee outside so far and a lot of accidents inside… but I’ve remained zen. I put her in her crate when she doesn’t go but she screams and I don’t want her to develop a bad relationship with her crate. I feel at a loss, is it just persistence and consistency? Xx
My puppy pees and poops in her crate. I've made it as small as possible. I've removed all the bedding. I'm at my wits end. I do not want to rehome her but this is a serious problem. Impossible to crate train if she does not feel a need to keep her crate clean. Ideas?
The video says if you've tried to follow the steps the best you can and your puppy is still having accidents you need to get your puppy looked at by the vet cause there could be something wrong with your puppy.
My pup does great being housebroken and making outside. The only problem we're having is pee's a little when we go and pet her or put her leash on (we also had the vet check her and she's fine). Any suggestions on that would definitely be appreciated...
I have a question about if my puppy already like go backyard do her busses, but not the same spot, what i can correct her, because if I stayed at the same spot I want her pee, she's not want, and wants to leave or crying, barking.thank you so much
My baby Shih Tzu had such a tiny neck I couldn’t find a collar to fit her… No collar = no leash..same with a harness…she is just too tiny? What to do? I finally got a large play crate for the backyard (not a closed in yard) so I just put her in there to do her business.. was this a bad idea?
What if my puppy doesn't potty outside? We could be there for couple hours and nothing happens, she just doesn't potty there but pees immediately when we come back inside. Even if I see signals that she needs to pee and we go back outside, she doesn't potty until we come back inside.
What if your puppy pulls on the leash while outside going potty? Is this ok? Having tension on the leash seems to be the only way my 14 week old puppy will go poo.
Unfortunately, my puppy does just stop and drop (urine, that is) He'll walk around with his nose to the ground so I get on alert, then he moves off as if nothing just happened and then boom, stop and drop. I've tried several ways to catch him, but now he doesn't want to stay in his potty area at all. My biggest problem is that he's so small (1.4#) and was told not to use a collar on a Yorkie. And also was told not to let him outside until he's had all his shots, because he's so tiny he could get sick so easily. I think I'm going to have to make him a light-weight harness type thing and use a light-weight rope so I can get him out on the patio at least. Anyway, I've watched this video several times before he came to us, and I thought I was doing things as well as could be done. But now that he's here and I'm experiencing his habits, I watched it again and just solidified what you're saying. Don't get me wrong, he's pretty good most times. I'm going to come up with a plan that should fix this. Thanks for the lesson.
I just received a puppy shih Tzu, she now is 31/2 months old. She goes to door and wines and we go out, but she goes potty seems like every 15 minutes or less. Never had a puppy go so often. What do I do? 14:54
Do you have an older puppy or dog still not totally house trained? You are not alone! Check out our video on that very topic which packed full of tips to help ua-cam.com/video/pf6_E1TRYxU/v-deo.html
Very helpful ❤

Thank you for all the detail, its really helpful.
You should write a book.
@@molly-fw5ho ignore the many videos and do what works for your dog
Peanut & Skye tore her play pin up in 2021. Peanut won't go in it. She never liked it. So no more play pins.
Trained my dog- no crate. Took a week or two. You have to diligently take them out. They’re going to mess up. They’ll eventually get it. Mostly you need some treats. Give your dog a yummy treat after they potty outside.
Please tell me how ? Lol .. I’m about to get a puppy and I’m terrible with potty training but not really into the crate thing..
My two year old rescue isn’t keen on the crate, I got for her, so I’m keen for her to get trained up in potty habits without one
Well done! This caging trend/nonsense is nuts! I’ve never caged any of my dogs. Lazy dog parenting!
Did you use a crate?
Thank you! Getting started with 11 week old German shepherd today
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! New puppy is 10 weeks old!! We are doing all of these things!!
Hi, here's another helpful video for you: ua-cam.com/video/pf6_E1TRYxU/v-deo.html
Happy training! 🐾
Great job!
I took my puppies pee pads outside and I'm trying to see if he gets the message. So far he is going outside and not on the pee pads so far.
Or maybe I can figure it out, now that I think about it, maybe it has something to do with the collar grab game....but it sure would be helpful to have your guidance with an energy crazed puppy :) Thank you for all that you and your team do ;)
We got an extendable lead. If he pulls to hard you pull him in again.
Everyone, Training starts at 2:44
Thank you 😂
My goodness, thank you.

Thanks
Awesome! Thank you! We have an 11 week old border collie and are trying to get him trained. I appreciate your perspective and sharing of your methods!
This is fantastic! We are training an adult adopted dog who was not housebroken and these tips are so helpful. Thank you!
I don't use a crate for potty training. I also don't use treats for my eliminations. This is what I do since decades and it works with every puppy.

Great tips, Susan! The H-O-T method makes so much sense for training. Can't wait to start applying these!

He wouldn’t pee in the house for love or money but this little guy he’s a Maltese and he was very mistreated. Another thing that helps
after cleaning up inside is to use "Nature's Miracle" in a spray bottle. It is an enzyme spray that breaks down the odor to discourage the puppy from using the same area again.
Where did you get Natures Miracle?
Most anywhere: Vets, walmart, etc
Absolutely the best and most practical instruction, thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for commenting

just drag it,... i love this lady! lol
We called her our 'push-button pee-er.'
Thnx so much for sharing these podcasts, you've really helped me work through and refine some things I was having trouble understanding how to straighten out.
Thank you I’m learning for my future Doberman if you have any videos of them
Great advice!!
Very practical and to the point! Thank you
Hi Susan!
Love your training videos! We have been binge watching prior to getting our 8 week old mini Aussie (-:
We watched this video and have been trying to teach our pupper, but was trained to pee in a box which he does well, but doesn’t want to pee outside. What can we do? We have trained him that when the leash goes on it’s time to potty, but instead will play around with leaves on the ground. We do limit him to three minutes as you’ve suggested, should we give him more time?
I have 3 7 mold pups that keep. Peeing on rugs, blankets and the floor. They wont stop
I just got my puppy German shepherd on yesterday. This will take longer if I have to work
Me too. And he still not trained so be patient 😅
I am getting a new puppy next week for the first time in years so I need the refresher. Seems like not much has changed lol.
How exciting that you're getting a puppy! Congratulations! We have a wonderful Puppy Essentials playlist with more tips for you: ua-cam.com/video/rUIX5qW85tU/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
What tips do you have for male pups who continue to sniff corners of furniture, even after going outside?
very good advise. Expertly delivered. Thank you.
Good advice, thank you.
This was very helpful, thank you.
What do you do for a dog who eats their poop?
Loved the video, I learned a lot. Thanks
Great tips
Also Susan has a fantastic puppy playlist that will help you with many other puppy questions! ua-cam.com/play/PLphRRSxcMHy2hywpv3Md3HbWWPPbVF8W5.html
We have no doubt that Sully will fit right into your new home.
How would I train my dog to go outside as well as inside on a pad if needed?
Very helpful and will apply.
Issue:
I get up between 2 and 3 a.m. and have always done so in my adult years.
SO, my question is:
Should I wake up my new puppy (Charlie) to go potty when I get up in the middle of the night?
Hi! Here's what Susan does with puppies during the night: ua-cam.com/video/Fd8wkmmZnvs/v-deo.html
Great tips but what if you already have dogs?
Hi! Here's a video with help for older dogs: ua-cam.com/video/pf6_E1TRYxU/v-deo.html
How do you train a puppy to use puppy pads inside? The same way with a leash even though it is in the house?
Mine has trained really well- EXCept- marking or marking for my presence when I leave…. Ug.
i live in a 3 story condo and most of the time, the activity in the house is a family room at the basement level.
Here is where you can watch this episode --> ua-cam.com/video/Z1w1N54Px0A/v-deo.html

Helpful advice
What ways can a modify this for an apartment with a balcony?
Our 11 weeks is with us since 2 weeks now ,we going out but never on leash should i change and put his leash on from now?
Hi @adriennhollo6096 , great question! And yes, you can start following Susan's step-by-step now, it's not too late. Happy training! 🐾 (Elena ~ DogsThat Team)
What if you want them to use the pads
Thank you!!
Is it safe to take an 8 week old puppy to the backyard to potty?
We have a 5 month old puppy and live on the 7th floor. Any suggestions when you can't just get her outside in a moment?
Maybe a good idea to get one of the frames that hold a puppy pad? Could you put it just outside your door, so she learns at least to go outside your flat. The frame stops them playing with it, not ideal solution but may help?
I get a puppy tomorrow and I'm scared shitless ..
Hi Katherine, you can totally do this, congrats on your new puppy! We're leaving our Puppy Essentials playlist for you: ua-cam.com/video/rUIX5qW85tU/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
I get mine on Oct. 9
My puppy is pad trained. She has been since I got her and it is so hard to get her to go outside instead of on the pad!
I put a pad outside too just to show her this is your loo spot, it worked well
I love this 😮
What about treat rewards for potty in the correct spot?
Hi, I love your videos! But pleaseeee help…
I brought my 8 week of cocker spaniel home yesterday. I know it’s early days but I want to set her up for success from day one but it’s not going well with toileting so far…
Ive tried taking her out on the leash but she just bites it so need to do more work with the leash.
Xx
Thank you good advice.
Hi! Here's another episode with help fo you and your pup: ua-cam.com/video/9iIYL64byV8/v-deo.html
5:35 is the best starting point for me...
I have a question about if my puppy already like go backyard do her busses, but not the same spot, what i can correct her, because if I stayed at the same spot I want her pee, she's not want, and wants to leave or crying, barking.thank you so much
My baby Shih Tzu had such a tiny neck I couldn’t find a collar to fit her…
No collar = no leash..same with a harness…she is just too tiny? What to do? I finally got a large play crate for the backyard (not a closed in yard) so I just put her in there to do her business.. was this a bad idea?
Get a collar out of the cat section
What if my puppy doesn't potty outside? We could be there for couple hours and nothing happens, she just doesn't potty there but pees immediately when we come back inside. Even if I see signals that she needs to pee and we go back outside, she doesn't potty until we come back inside.
It is all about shaping behaviour.
Do I wake up every hr to take to per for 1 week🤔
Hi Nicky! Here's help for sleeping through the night with a puppy: ua-cam.com/video/Fd8wkmmZnvs/v-deo.html
My puppy takes #2 after 5min of her peeing. Sometimes it could take 20min.
Tysm for this video. ❤
Love that you're being so observant with your puppy! Here's some extra help from a newer podcast: ua-cam.com/video/pf6_E1TRYxU/v-deo.html
My puppy came with bad constipation. We are on day 2. I am more concerned with curing that, than toilet training at the moment.
We are sorry to hear that. We always recommend talking to your vet if you are noticing symptoms that may be causing issues.
If you get nothing in 3 and put them in crate, how long before you try to go out again?
I just received a puppy shih Tzu, she now is 31/2 months old. She goes to door and wines and we go out, but she goes potty seems like every 15 minutes or less. Never had a puppy go so often. What do I do?
14:54
Hi Christine, if your puppy needs to go potty every 15 minutes, make sure to check with your veterinarian to confirm she's in good health ❤️
