Extremely Rare Cars and Bikes Hidden in the Mountains

- EDIT* I've had a lot of questions about why we were there in the first place. We drove our, previously abandoned 35 years in the woods, 1967 Volvo 122s 600 miles to a meet in the mountains.
The video is here:

Recently I had the opportunity to visit a man in North Carolina with a collection of cars spread across multiple properties. Some in barns some outside. Many Jaguar E types, many MG, MGA, Triumph, Fiat, Datsun, Volvos and THOUSANDS of bikes.
Thousands of bikes...

Do you see anything you recognize?
Jep! A lovely Amazon 🤩
( 18:21 ) Triumph Herald 1200 @dean of Machines (I had one a while back )
Yep! I think we spotted a Saab 94 ( actually 😉 )
I'm talking rubbish.... 96 of course
@@karlbenz4925 Don't tell anyone but it might be my favorite car there. Looking through pictures I actually found a second SAAB 95/96 but can only see the nose in the background. I must return...
Rare, crazy, cool and it seems that the guy somehow knows where everything is. Lots of stories. Thanks for sharing Dean.
Absolutely impressive isnt it? Guy has one or two of everything.
The difference between hoarders and collectors is the way they store their material, some great cars here , bikes too.
That's a good point. Having piles of things might not be great for collectables.
I figure having more than one can use or display is hoarding but gathering projects for the future is use, I always have projects lined up but I do complete them. That owner did us a service preserving artifacts inside but the machinery left to rot outside was not reasonable. I will never forget the xk120 a pal of my dads parked outside because it needed new tires. He constantly refused to sell despite being quite poor, 25 years later it went to the crusher.
@@danontherun5685 eventually, he got to that 120 like he said. Unfortunately, its too late.
30 yrs ago on a small farm just outside Regina Sask Canada, I was introduced to an owner/collector/HOARDER with a collection even more extensive.
Old boy farmer that had outlived all his family, kids too.
I worked as a small engine mechanic and it was my mechanic coworker that knew the old gent.
Coworker was doing a vintage bike resto and had exhausted his search attempts for a certain part. Told me he knew where he’d almost certainly find the part but that the old gent rarely parted with anything.
When we arrived I was blown away. Old cars, old trucks, old tractors, even old canvas planes! But that didn’t compare to my wonder when we went into a huge old barn - vintage and extremely rare bikes packed in. Old gent sent me (I was ‘the kid’) to crawl in and grab a box he pointed out. As I’m crawling over old canvas tarps I fall thru and come face to face with a Vincent Black Shadow! The damn thing was still shiny. Even the seat wasn’t ripped and had cushion still.
Lots of old Fords (model As and such), a ton of British bikes, the 25-30 planes I was clueless about, and a huge area of every brand tractor I could think of.
Sad part was, the old boy wouldn’t sell! His health was failing, he had no one to inherit, and it was likely going to all be grabbed up by the government after his death.
Thats a sad story :( interesting just the same! Thanks for sharing
Plenty of restorable classics there, lots of cars and bikes that people would give good money for. Unfortunately none of it is going to happen, it's all just going to sit there and return to the soil. I found the whole thing pretty sad.
He does sell once in a while. Theres hope!
Yes cannot understand the mentality of hoarders 30:12
Those xk120’s worth heaps
@@davdharrington5073 They sure are! Would you like one?
@@davdharrington5073 I think it's just a collection of happenstance cars and he never had the time he though he would to work on anything.
Hoarders paradise! 🤩So much to see lovely cars bikes and when you rerun it you see al kinds of other stuf!A shame of the P1800’s beautyful cars 😍 ! Jeepster is also cool 😎! The datsun’s are also rare and cool 😎 cars! To much to see in one time , overwhelming like the young and beautyful lady said! @DennisCollinsCarWorld
This is right up your alley Dennis. Austin Healy’s, Jeeps, Datsuns, ect
All sorts of classic goodies!
All these poor cars that need a lot of love! The least the guy could do is rebuild them and clean up the place!
Believe it or not he does sell stuff from this location!
I saw a triumph gt6 near that old camero, too bad he doesn't drive any of them
He had a couple gt6. Id love to get my hands on one
Great tour!
Thank you kindly! Did you see anything you recognized?
Hey Deano great video and a great way ro spend a day. Also enjoyed the gentlemans story, what r his plans for this horde? Btw i never got yhat sticker. Liked the photo montage at the end!😉
Hey Chuck! Welcome back! The horde is a show piece right now. He doesn’t really sell anything. Send me your address again to info@deanofmachines.com and I’ll send another one
Good morning sir, where did I go? Il email u later, have a great day!🙂

Possibly. Atleast he’s showing it off some.
@@DeanofMachines (possibly)?lol.yup for sure,so have to wait until he dies to get anything from him.never got these people, they know they cant take it with them,so you would think they would want to see them go to some one who would love them as much as they did.
Great show, I can't believe you walked past that 40' Ford coupe and didn't know what it was...
I know! The absolute nerve of me!!
wow id be digging that Suzuki Rotary out ,bloody rare machine here in NZ that's a museum piece here worth some serious bucks .
Oh trust me I want it big time. Has very few miles
You called it a Plymouth - It's a very desirable and expensive 40 Ford delux coupe - look at my thumbnail
You’re absolutely right! You have a nice car!
Lkpgh in l
How do you collect so much cool stuff. This would make a great TV show building every car and bike.
I agree! Would take a few years!

The translation for this is “A beautiful madness!”
I can’t agree more!!
It’s paradise! Don’t let lovely miss Dean read it! 🤣🤣😂
She usually sees comments before I do haha
I was afraid of that!😂😂😂
Working for a contractor in Plantation Acres in S.Florida about 20 years ago. I would always pass this fellas 3 Acre property. He had a barn... I never went in, but on the outside under the roof was a mid 60s Impala in really nice shape FILLED with boxes and whatever...and on top of it. And he had a what use to be nice mid 20s Willys Knight 4 door cabriolet with wooden spoke wheels..same filled with crap and on top...and this was in his driveway under a roof. Talked to one of the city inspectors. He said the guys back yard was full of cars. Last I heard was the city advised him to clear the property or incure penalties. The guy was a couple of sandwiches short of a picnic I'll tell ya...lol
😆😆😆 Its nice to see someone try to save the old stuff. Sadly they end up getting crushed either way, typically.
@@DeanofMachines yeah man..lol
I did manage to rescue a 63 GP from a fellas property up in Indiantown W.P. a few months ago. Sitting on a old wooden plank trailer. Complete matching running 389. She's crusty, but all there plus extras in the trunk.
@@thebrain7065 That's excellent! The 67 Volvo that I'm standing in front of at the very beginning is my 122s that we dragged off a farm last year. It was in the woods for 35 years and we were on a 600mile road trip when I filmed this tour video.
Wow that place is mental! I want that p1800 so bad!
You and me both man! I think both cars need a lot of work.
Even the MG has been kissed by the Swede.
What a salad of interesting stuff. How does one amass enough capital to collect so much things 😮 (I literally cannot comprehend)
Have money and be ready I guess. Just buy that thing you dont need!
That's what paradise look like !!!
i'd want to fix everything.
Everyone watch to the end, we've got some photo magic going on. 😀
I appreciate that man!
The one you thought was a Sunbeam is a Triumph Herald, early `60s- ish, later became the Spitfire.
Ah that makes perfect sense! The spitfire is one of my favorites
The Triumph Herald was available as a saloon/sedan, convertible, estate/wagon and as a van. The same body was called a Vitesse when fitted with a 6 cylinder motor. The Triumph Spitfire was a sports car produced at the same time using many of the same parts eg modified motor. Hope this helps.
@@flatheadV8 That's incredibly helpful! Thank you! Now I'm tempted to drag that Herald out of there! I'd name it Harold.
Pretty sure thats the rear view of a Triumph GTV6 I seen there🤔
@@Youchoob1The one shown at 18:15? Nope. Look at the area where the taillights mount and then do a search on UA-cam for a Triumph Herald, there`s a bunch of them. Growing up, my friend next door had a `63 convertible, his older brother had a `61 sedan and a kid up the street had a `62 convertible, so pretty sure I can spot a Herald when it`s a Herald.
SAAB 96 95 is a station wagon .The car to the right of the jaguar e type body is a triump herald old 4 speed volvo m40 transmission .Caddillac 1965 or 1966 .T bird 1957 BMW isetta On the flatbed another Tbird 1955 or 1956 camaro 1972 or 1973

wow there is some interesting stuff there.
A life time of collecting id say
I remember this collection on Barn fine Hunter with Tom cotter
I had to go look it up. Funny that the thumbnail is nearly the same as mine

There was a lot of reaaalllly cool stuff here

Darn close to it Id say
Dean thank you for sharing this video , gotta say the man did have the stuff and I thought my Father was Bad he doesn't throw anything away , I really enjoyed the video I was more interested in the Bike's and the American made car's but Yeah the collection is part amazing and part Sad because it's just wasting away like that , I could spend days there and enjoy myself just looking and wonder what I'm going to uncover next 😯😲😳🥺.
Again Thank you myfriend 👍🤟✌️
Hey George! Thanks for leaving a comment! The American stuff is cool. Its possible to buy things from collection so maybe some of it will get saved!
Both sad and joyfull to see.
Sad reality here in the USA. These cars are not worth much here.
I will never understand why people keep and collect all these things. Tons of metal and lots of junk. But it seems that enthusiasts love the place. 😊
There's a lot of different circumstances that can happen, I think. Plenty of great cars to see and save if he allows it!
4:57 Saab 95 is a wagon, that's a 96. 10:37 is a 40 Ford Deluxe.
Absolutely nailed it my friend!
1747 = Not an MG, but a Triumph GT6
I think you are absolutely right my friend!
I've seen this guy before on Barn Find Hunter. It's Maggie valley ? Lord help me I'd love to go and see this place. " Little Guy" at about 18 minutes 20 is a Triumph Herald. Little family saloon/sedan with same engine as the Spitfire but with "cooking" running gear , bodywork carbs etc, The "Interesting" Triumph mistaken initially for a MGB is a Triumph GT6.... A fastback type Spitfire with a 6 cylinder engine.
Thats pretty good! Theres a lot of old school odd ball cars in there.
@@DeanofMachines . Thanks for the vid. I really enjoyed it. I'm sure people try to buy this stuff all the time but maybe he doesn't want sell? 3000 bikes. Wow.! I import 70s bikes from the US into the UK and I'm come out of there broke if he'd let me. Thanks again. Rod
That little guy is a Triumph Herald. my first car.
What was your favorite memory with that little car?
Looking for CB750 Four engine forever and they are laying around wasting away. Heartbreaking. I'm retired now and keep running to brick walls building a bike to ride.
There's a chance he might sell some stuff if you are local. Otherwise, it's they are just show pieces now. CB750 is a good choice. One of my favorite bikes.
Steve and my dad was good friends the Cushman on his wall in his office was my dad's and the metropolitan's Steve's great thanks for the video
Thanks Harold! Steve seems like a great guy!
such a watse. sad really. so many great cars. I love the datsuns and all convertibles. they need to be restored

You are 100% correct on all accounts! This channel is actually 90% Volvo content. We love our old swedes! When I was looking at the p1800 and said “Well… there that is.” I was lamenting that it was sat there rotting away and knew the majority of my viewers would feel the same.

Any Harley-Davidsons in there?
Yeah! There were a couple stashed here and there
@@DeanofMachines I was playing close attention and I didn't see any.
Collections like theese come together by collecting, not by selling. It will be sold after the owner died....and a lot of items allready died before him....
You might be right. What would be your first pick?
@@DeanofMachines first i would love to walk around when the sun goes down, take good photos to keep the order it is in now, because if all the people come around and pick up stuff, all the magic will be gone. It starts with all the people walk through, wipe over dusty windows to see through, take things in theire hands, clean parts to find numbers and put everything back just 1inch off the place where it was. Make a documentation before all that can happen.
If you make it a museum, it's not to make money with it. I'm really moody about places like that.
The most people see only old stuff, crap, it all has to be shredded and recycled. They see oil drip into the earth and scream "save the planet", but the oil has been in there since milions of years, only deeper down in. Just because you can't see it, it's not gone. Or not there....
For myself, i would pick the chance to be there alone for some hours, dive into it, hear all the stories told by the owner. That will be enough. But i won't even have the chance to get there.
If i would get forced to pick some stuff....mmmh.....a ford coupé from the late 30s, a 55 2 door post chevy, a motorbike from the 80s....i don t know....but i think i won't take or change anything. I could better use the whole place as one part, as i could destroy it by taking away just one part of the whole....
All JUNK!!!!
You don’t think any of it is savable?
Maybe if some of those cars have been out of the elements all these years and they are rare but for the most part I keep thinking of that 65 mustang I bought that looked good but was FULL of rot!!…. they are made of iron man !!!…susceptible to decomposition and rot!!…after all these decades unless you’ve got buckets of money and time and know how and tools and a place to do it then your project will get sidelined and sit in your garage for another 10 years
How did someone have the money to collect all this stuff???
Right time and place everytime Id assume. A lifetime of being the guy known for collecting old weird cars
It needs to be washed .....MG obviously has a Volvo motor....Hearld....
Overall, everything there could use a spa day…
What a shame. So much going to waste.
It's sad to see it all this way.
Thats not a collection thats a hoard
But its a nice hoard!
I bet you start checking numbers on that stuff from way back when and I guarantee half of it stolen
Theres gotta be a couple in there.
I hate classic car hoarders that destroy so many good classics.
Its nice that he’s saved them from being crushed and allows people to see them. They can be had eventually
Where British cars and bikes go to die…
They might be obtainable at some point...
You need to brush up on your makes and models
I prefer the weatherman approach. 95% wrong 100% of the time!
*PromoSM*
Oh yeah?
This is really cool and there's a lot of nice vehicles in there probably motorcycles as well but the police is full jam-packed with stuff if there was ever a fire you would never get none of the cars at least out of the building no organization whatsoever sorry but it's a fact 😊👍
You are absolutely right Gerry. This place is mostly just a show and tell stop.
If it was me I would respond the unclear to be able to book cars and vehicles in that one area for the time being to take all bikes and put them in another area Batman stuff that is just crap I would have an empty been sitting there to get rid of it just make money off the scrap and whoever's going to so be it but there is a lot of nice cars that are kind of my style in a sense but I'm more into the older models like the t-buckets in Pontiac 67 Camaros you do have sports cars are there a couple maybe that I like but it's cool to watch and look at because you never know there's always a diamond in the rough
@@gerryricker7812 The possibilities are really endless. Do you have any project car's of your own?
