    Quick tip for setting the temp on the unit: you can go backwards to get to the desired temp faster.

    Nice video. should help people realize that an electric smoker can do a really good job on a pork butt.
    I've been using Masterbuilt electric smokers for a long time. They put out some bad ass smoked meat. Last pork butt i did was smoked in the smoker for 2.5 hours with pecan. My element died during the smoke so it got finished in the oven at 250 deg double wrapped. Came out great. My Masterbuilt is about 14 years old, I couldn't even begin to count the pork butts, briskets and chicken it's smoked. When you get tired of dealing with the controller issues look into adding a PID controller to it. It's a game changer

      Thanks for the comment and extra advice. I’ll have to look into that unit.
      The best thing I’ve made is prime rib. So much better smoked that oven baked.

    I had mine for 10 years until the gasket started to deteriorate and no longer kept a seal. As a result there would be mold buildup. It was good while it lasted. I recently purchased a Member’s Mark pellet smoker and it’s way better than the Masterbuilt because it’s larger and it also has a small compartment for wood chips and chunks.

      Wow! 10 years is pretty good. I’ll have to look into the Members Mark when we replace ours.
      I like the electric because I don’t have to babysit it as much. I’m always doing multiple things when I’m smoking.
      Thank you for watching and your insight. I’ll have to watch for the seal deterioration.

      If you haven't already made a purchase, and if there is one near you (not sure about free shipping), but Academy Sports has the Master Built 40 on sale right now for $199. 2 weeks ago I bought mine from them on sale for $249. I'm about to have a talk with Academy Sports. 😂

      @@LifeofaBoringOldGuy They told me that I was just out of the time period to get a price adjustment (14 days). After telling them that I'd just bring the one already purchased back for a refund. Then they wanted a copy of the ad with price. The Cust. Svc. rep. sent me an email and I replied with a screen shot. The ad was on FB. She then said that they don't match "3rd party ads" and I told her it was an A.S. ad that they paid to run on FB. I also told her that in that order alone I had spend over $800. and had made two other online purchases since and didn't want the hassle but I wouldn't have any problem bringing it all back. She got with a "Supervisor" and they agreed to give me half the difference. Well, $25. + tax is better than nothing so I said ok and they sent me an email gift card. These companies and their pricing gimmicks are something else! About like the original ad stating "3 Day Only", and then after that 3 days was up they did the very same ad with "3 Days Only" 2 more times! 😂. They've all got gimmicks it seems !

    For anyone who is buying a master built beware because I received one in a box that was totally destroyed and re-taped and yet I did not get any type of open box or damage discount.
    Then to top it off there is no telephone number to call and they force you to contact them online. This mean they can take up to a week or more to get back to you or even if you need a replacement part.
    If I could do it again I would buy a different brand or one that I can get at a store that is easily returnable

    • @LifeofaBoringOldGuy
      @LifeofaBoringOldGuy  Рік тому +2

      WOW!! Very sorry that happened to you. Did you buy it directly from Masterbuilt or a 3rd party? I know there is almost always a way to get a refund when products are delivered that way.
      How long ago was that? I'd love to help you find a way to get your money back.

    I used to keep the meat in the smoker the whole time to let it get up to temp even after finishing smoking but I started finishing in the oven, I figure it’s less wear and tear on the smoker.

    • @LifeofaBoringOldGuy

      I’ve heard people do the same thing. Once you get to the point of wrapping it in foil, then you don’t need the smoker. Yes, less wear.

    I have 30-inch Masterbuilt digital electric smoker with the digital electric controller on top in the rear. It's less than 2 months old. How do you get it to stay on? I My smoker began turning itself off on the second smoke. I filed a warranty claim, and MB at first (Shannon S) said they would send me a new one if I gave them my shipping address. I did, Shannon acknowledged that, and then they sent me an email 6 days later saying I have never supplied the shipping address they had already acknowledged, so MB was canceling the warranty service.

    • @LifeofaBoringOldGuy
      @LifeofaBoringOldGuy  Рік тому +2

      OK, that sucks. Mine did something similar. I should probably do a video on the fix. It's actually a very simple. All you have to do is unscrew the two screws on the back to remove the controller. You will see there is moisture build up in it. Take it off, unconnect the wire harness and let it dry out.
      It's only done it to me once and that was early on. I bought it Dec 21 and it happening in Feb 22. Hasn't happened since. Probably the 3rd smoke? If you leave the vent open, it lets a lot of the moisture out and does not go into the controller.
      Hope that helps, BlueRidgeBikeMan!

    • @LifeofaBoringOldGuy

      If you are talking about storing it, I move it inside to keep out of the elements. They do sell an outdoor cover for it. You could place on wood.

    How do people do an overnight smoke if the chips only last 45mins?

    • @LifeofaBoringOldGuy
      @LifeofaBoringOldGuy  9 місяців тому +1

      That is a fantastic question. First, I would never recommend doing an overnight smoke. Unless you are staying up with it. I am sure there are lots of videos here where people do overnight smokes, I've never looked into it.
      Unless you are up all night with your smoke, that just does not seem safe to me. Fire or electric.

      I've owned mine for the past 7 years. I've had multiple issues, but it has great BBQ smoke results. I would recommend purchasing a cold smoke attachment on it. Then you don't have to keep reloading wood in it. The cold smoke attachment only adds smoke and no heat.
      My version is older with the screen towards the front, which the display totally doesn't work. However, I was using the Bluetooth function to set time and temperature. Luckily, my old cellphone has the original application and still works. The new Masterbuilt application doesn't support my old smoker. It's okay, I will be upgrading to a Grilla Mammoth smoker shortly. In my opinion, Masterbuilt upright electric smokers are awesome. Just set it and almost forget it. I highly recommend the cold smoke attachment. It will run 10 hours on wood chips or 12 hours on Treger pellets.

    • @LifeofaBoringOldGuy
      @LifeofaBoringOldGuy  6 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for adding to the converation,@@JohnARobinsonJr . I am going to have to look into the cold smoke attachement. Sounds like a great idea.

    • @JohnARobinsonJr
      @JohnARobinsonJr 6 місяців тому

      @LifeofaBoringOldGuy you'll love it. No more having to dump chips. As a bonus, you can smoke cheese with it. It doesn't apply any heat to the smoker. As long as you keep the ash tray totally closed.
      However, if the ash tray isn't totally closed, the cold smoker will produce more smoke and heat to the main smoker because there's an air draft present. 6 hours of smoke will turn into 4 hours with chips. With the ash tray closed, I can get 12 hours with wood pellets. I hope this helps you.

    I seen a video the first day i bought my smoker and learned that you never keep that digital power controller on, I take it off and store it in the house when I’m done, it will get full of smoke & water from the vapor of cooking, I actually have it off to the side while I’m cooking,do not leave it on the hole that they suggest you snap it in, that is a design flaw,

      Hi, Reaper. Thanks for watching. The smoker has a low temp of 100F. This allows you to smoke cheese. Which I really want to do.
      Also, it maxes at 275F. In case you were curious.

    • @USA__2023
      @USA__2023 Рік тому +1

      you can set them pretty low, about 100 deg I think. But, at a low temp it will not burn the chips and produce smoke. The best way to get smoke from these smokers without adding a smoke adapter is to open the vents all the way so the heating element will cycle on / off.
